00:00:02SISKO: Commander's Log, Stardate 48481.2.
00:00:06My senior staff and I have been asked
00:00:08to address the annual Starfleet symposium
00:00:10on the current situation in the Gamma Quadrant.
00:00:12I'm looking forward to the opportunity
00:00:14and to visiting my sister in Portland.
00:00:18Entering Earth orbit.
00:00:20Now there's something I never get tired of looking at.
00:00:23If you ask me, the seas could be a little more purple.
00:00:26That's funny, I was just thinking they weren't green enough.
00:00:28I guess it's true what they say.
00:00:30"There is no place like home."
00:00:32No matter what color the water is.
00:00:34We'd better get ready, Benjamin.
00:00:35Dinner tonight with Admiral Drazman.
00:00:37Oh.
00:00:38Not "Droner" Drazman?
00:00:39The Commander of the Proxima Maintenance Yards?
00:00:41BASHIR: You're more than welcome to come along.
00:00:43The entire senior staff was invited.
00:00:45Full dress uniform? Fine table linens?
00:00:47A different fork for every course?
00:00:49Thanks, but no thanks.
00:00:50That's why I stayed an enlisted man.
00:00:52They don't expect me to show up for these formal dinners.
00:00:55Major, Constable, would you care to join us?
00:00:57No, thank you.
00:00:59I'd say this is strictly a Starfleet occasion.
00:01:02Commander, I'm receiving an incoming emergency message.
00:01:05- It's from DS9. - On screen.
00:01:07Commander, am I glad to see you.
00:01:10KIRA: This better be good, Quark.
00:01:12You're on an emergency channel.
00:01:14I just received a message from the Grand Nagus.
00:01:16He wants me to remind you of the critical role he played in establishing contact with the Dominion.
00:01:22SISKO: You can assure the Nagus I will mention his assistance prominently in my report to Starfleet.
00:01:27There is one more thing, Commander.
00:01:29It seems the Nagus' nephew,
00:01:31Belongo is currently being held by Starfleet authorities on Aldebaran III.
00:01:37A slight misunderstanding, I'm sure.
00:01:39A misunderstanding the Nagus no doubt wants to be cleared up.
00:01:43I do owe him a favor.
00:01:45He thinks so, too.
00:01:47And to quote the 111th Rule of Acquisition...
00:01:50"Treat people in your debt like family-- exploit them."
00:01:54I have been reading up.
00:01:56You can tell the Nagus I will do everything I can but also remind him of the 217th Rule of Acquisition...
00:02:03"You can't free a fish from water."
00:02:07I'll be sure the Nagus gets the message.
00:02:17She's all yours, Major.
00:02:19Energize, Mr. O'Brien.
00:02:20Aye, sir.
00:02:24( console beeping )
00:02:25That's strange.
00:02:27What's wrong?
00:02:28Well, nothing serious.
00:02:30Just a power fluctuation in the annular confinement beam.
00:02:36Oh, well, that's impossible.
00:02:38What happened?
00:02:39Well, I stabilized the beam but according to our sensors they never materialized at their destination.
00:02:45They're just... gone.
00:02:50MAN: Okay, buddy, come on. Rise and shine.
00:02:53Come on!
00:02:55Well, look what we have here.
00:02:57Who are you?
00:02:58Who am I? You believe this?
00:03:00Sleeping Beauty asking me questions. Up!
00:03:08Hey, Vin, we've been working all night.
00:03:10Why don't we forget about these guys?
00:03:12I just want to go home and see Sonya and the kids and get some sleep.
00:03:16What are you, an anarchist?
00:03:17There's a law against sleeping in the streets.
00:03:20Though I do like the matching pajamas.
00:03:23All right. Let's see some logo.
00:03:24- Logo? - VIN: I.D.
00:03:26Identification.
00:03:28UHC card.
00:03:30Transit pass.
00:03:31Where are we?
00:03:32What happened to Starfleet Headquarters?
00:03:34Perfect. Just what we need, two more dims.
00:03:37Those shotguns, uniforms... there's something very familiar about this.
00:03:42Yeah, probably from the last time you were in a Sanctuary District.
00:03:44Sanctuary District? What year is this?
00:03:46Same year as it was yesterday-- 2024.
00:03:49Let's go.
00:03:54VIN: How do they find us?
00:06:12Are you okay?
00:06:13Oh, my head.
00:06:14What happened?
00:06:16Did you get jacked or something?
00:06:17Jacked?
00:06:19You know, robbed.
00:06:20Oh...
00:06:23Did they get your credit chips, your I.D.?
00:06:25(sighs)
00:06:27Oh... it looks like they got everything except my brooch.
00:06:32What...? Do you live near here, uh?
00:06:34Can you get home?
00:06:36I was traveling with some friends and uh, I guess we got separated.
00:06:40Well, you shouldn't be walking around without I.D.
00:06:44You better order some replacements.
00:06:46You can use my Interface terminal if you wish.
00:06:49My office is just around the corner.
00:06:52That's very kind of you... um?
00:06:54Chris, Chris Brynner.
00:06:55Jadzia.
00:06:56That's a pretty name.
00:06:57What is that, Dutch?
00:06:59Ah, something like that.
00:07:01It's very kind of you to help me.
00:07:03Oh, don't mention it.
00:07:05It's not every day that I get to rescue a damsel in distress.
00:07:08Let me help you.
00:07:16It's just this way.
00:07:29Check the Heisenberg compensators.
00:07:31I'll run a level-1 diagnostic of the pattern buffers.
00:07:35See if there was any kind of field imbalance.
00:07:37Chief?
00:07:38- Any news from Starfleet? - Nothing good.
00:07:40As far as they can tell, Commander Sisko and the others never materialized in San Francisco.
00:07:44According to their sensors our transporter signal disintegrated immediately after we began the beam-out sequence.
00:07:50That doesn't agree with our records.
00:07:53The system log shows that the transport was successfully completed.
00:07:56They definitely materialized somewhere.
00:07:57Well, that's good news, anyway
00:07:59- but the question is, where? - Oh, I wish I knew.
00:08:01Whatever the answer is, it's not in the log.
00:08:04The only unusual thing it recorded was the variance in the annular confinement beam.
00:08:09But you corrected for that.
00:08:10It was a simple adjustment.
00:08:12The beam was just reacting to the accumulation of chroniton particles on the ship's hull.
00:08:16Chroniton particles?
00:08:17They're emitted by the cloaking device.
00:08:19They sometimes become lodged in the ship's ablative armor matrix.
00:08:22But we've used the transporter many times since the cloaking device was installed.
00:08:26There's never been a problem before.
00:08:28I don't know why there should be one now.
00:08:30Wait a minute.
00:08:32It looks like there was a surge in temporal energy seconds before the initiation of the transporter sequence.
00:08:38Tell me that's a clue.
00:08:39Oh, it's a clue, all right.
00:08:41I just don't know what it means yet.
00:08:58BASHIR: How do you feel?
00:08:59Better.
00:09:00Me, too.
00:09:01Probably transporter shock.
00:09:03Disorienting, but it wears off quickly.
00:09:04I know one thing. We're definitely in San Francisco.
00:09:07I caught a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge a few blocks back.
00:09:09I saw it, too.
00:09:11Do you know what happened to our combadges?
00:09:13They were probably stolen while we were unconscious.
00:09:15This is not the Earth we're used to, Doctor.
00:09:18That's still at least a century away.
00:09:20I wonder what happened to Dax.
00:09:23She was caught in the transporter beam with us.
00:09:24Whatever affected us, must have affected her, too.
00:09:27That means she's probably somewhere nearby.
00:09:29The first chance we get, we've got to find her.
00:09:33And then what?
00:09:36And then, we find a way home.
00:09:38VIN: All right, let's go. Bring 'em.
00:09:40Okay, let's go. Hurry it up.
00:09:44- Sonya's going to kill me. - Eh.
00:09:51What is this place?
00:09:53A Sanctuary District.
00:09:55BASHIR: 21st century history is not one of my strong points.
00:09:58Too depressing.
00:10:00It's been a hobby of mine.
00:10:02They made some ugly mistakes.
00:10:05But they also paved the way for a lot of things we now take for granted.
00:10:08- And I assume this is one of those mistakes. - A bad one.
00:10:12By the early 2020s, there was a place like this in every major city in the United States.
00:10:17Why are these people in here?
00:10:19Are they criminals?
00:10:20No, people with criminal records weren't allowed in the Sanctuary Districts.
00:10:25Then what did they do to deserve this?
00:10:26Nothing.
00:10:28Just people... without jobs or places to live.
00:10:32So, they get put in here?
00:10:35Welcome to the 21st century, Doctor.
00:10:37VIN: Hold it right there.
00:10:40You wanna go home, go home. What do I care?
00:10:42Thanks, Vin.
00:10:47Shall we?
00:11:08(knocking)
00:11:11Hi.
00:11:13Sorry to keep you waiting.
00:11:15Were you able to order a new I.D.?
00:11:17Just finished.
00:11:20It took me a while to convince them
00:11:21I was who I said I was.
00:11:23They'll be expressing a transit pass and a couple of credit chips in a few hours.
00:11:27I asked them to send it here.
00:11:28- I hope you don't mind. - No problem.
00:11:30Thanks for letting me use your terminal and your account.
00:11:37You know, those are... very unusual.
00:11:42Oh, you mean my tattoos?
00:11:44It is amazing work.
00:11:45Where did you have them done? Japan?
00:11:47How did you guess?
00:11:49Well, I used to have one myself.
00:11:51A Maori tribal pattern.
00:11:52It used to go all the way down my arm.
00:11:55I got it in high school, back in the '90s just like everybody else.
00:11:59Of course, I had to have it removed.
00:12:01Well, you know how it is.
00:12:03To get the government contracts you have to look like all the rest of the drones.
00:12:08So I guess that makes me a sellout.
00:12:10Not necessarily.
00:12:13What kind of business do you do?
00:12:14You don't know?
00:12:15Mm-mm.
00:12:19Well, I guess I'll have to have a talk with my public relations people.
00:12:25I'm Chris Brynner...
00:12:27Brynner Information Systems.
00:12:30You know, Interface operations
00:12:32Net access, Channel 90.
00:12:34That Chris Brynner.
00:12:38(chuckles)
00:12:40So, what do you think?
00:12:41Does that make me a sellout or not?
00:12:43Probably, but I won't hold it against you.
00:12:50These friends of yours that you told me about... is there any way for you to get ahold of them?
00:12:56I wish I could.
00:13:06VIN: Left hand.
00:13:11Other hand.
00:13:18Look straight ahead.
00:13:21Now stand over here.
00:13:28COMPUTER: Welcome to SafeTech's fingerprint database.
00:13:32Your government discount has been accepted.
00:13:35Remember, our new retinal scan service
00:13:38is now accessible on Channel 178.
00:13:40Yeah, yeah, save the commercial.
00:13:45COMPUTER: We are sorry
00:13:47but the fingerprints you have provided are not on record.
00:13:49No I.D.
00:13:51No fingerprint record, no Interface account.
00:13:54It's like you two don't exist.
00:13:57Well, since we don't exist, why not let us go?
00:14:00Yeah, well, let's see.
00:14:02You don't have any I.D., you don't have any money and you're both dressed like clowns.
00:14:07You figure it out.
00:14:09Please fill out these forms.
00:14:11Answer all questions to the best of your ability.
00:14:13If you cannot speak English, an interpreter will be provided.
00:14:15If you cannot read, questions will be given to you verbally.
00:14:17If there's any part of this form you do not understand ask one of our staff for assistance.
00:14:21Now, sit down, shut up and fill out the forms.
00:14:25And if you've got any problems, don't come to me with them.
00:14:28Thank you... very much.
00:14:38Tell Admiral Ngomo I appreciate her offer but I don't want anyone beaming onto this ship until we know what's going on.
00:14:43If they want to come up by shuttle, that's fine.
00:14:48Major, I think I know what happened to Commander Sisko and the others.
00:14:52The temporal surge we detected was caused by an explosion of a microscopic singularity passing through this solar system.
00:14:59Somehow, the energy emitted by this singularity shifted the chroniton particles in our hull into a high state
00:15:05- of temporal polarization. - Which means what?
00:15:08Which means the transporter beam was redirected as it passed through the polarized particles.
00:15:12- Redirected where? - Not where...
00:15:14...when.
00:15:16The beam was redirected through time, not space.
00:15:20They arrived in San Francisco, just like they were supposed to.
00:15:22But not when they were supposed to.
00:15:24How much time are we talking about-- days, weeks?
00:15:28More like centuries.
00:15:49This is ridiculous.
00:15:51I mean, we've been here three hours and the line has barely moved at all.
00:15:54I got one word for you, pal-- plenty of overtime.
00:15:58That's three words.
00:16:00Hey, for a dim, you're pretty smart.
00:16:02Now, go back and take a seat.
00:16:07Oh, boy.
00:16:31- (sighs) - (woman shouting, indistinct)
00:16:36Some of these people are mentally ill.
00:16:39They need proper medical treatment.
00:16:41I know, but they're not going to get it.
00:16:43Not now anyway.
00:16:46What? What is it?
00:16:48SISKO: That calendar over there-- it says August 30, 2024.
00:16:52I'm not sure I understand.
00:16:53You ever hear of the Bell Riots?
00:16:54Vaguely.
00:16:56It is one of the most violent civil disturbances in American history and it happened right here, San Francisco
00:17:02Sanctuary District "A" the first week of September, 2024.
00:17:06But that's only a few days from now.
00:17:08Which means if we don't get out of here soon we'll be caught right in the middle of it.
00:17:23Just how bad are these riots going to be, Commander?
00:17:27Bad.
00:17:29The Sanctuary residents will take over the district.
00:17:32Some of the guards will be taken hostage.
00:17:34The government will send in troops to restore order.
00:17:36Hundreds of Sanctuary residents will be killed.
00:17:39Hundreds?
00:17:43And there's nothing we can do to prevent it.
00:17:45Starfleet temporal displacement policy may sound good in the classroom but to know that hundreds of people are going to die and to not be able to do a thing to save them.
00:17:56I sympathize, Doctor, but if it will make you feel any better the riots will be one of the watershed events of the 21st century.
00:18:05Gabriel Bell will see to that.
00:18:07- Bell? - The man they named the riots after.
00:18:10He is one of the Sanctuary residents who will be guarding the hostages.
00:18:14The government troops will storm this place based on rumors that the hostages have been killed.
00:18:18It turns out the hostages were never harmed because of Gabriel Bell.
00:18:24In the end, Bell sacrifices his own life to save them.
00:18:27He'll become a national hero.
00:18:30Outrage over his death and the death of the other residents will change public opinion about the Sanctuaries.
00:18:37They'll be torn down.
00:18:39And the United States will finally begin correcting the social problems it had struggled with for over 100 years.
00:18:45And all of this is going to happen in the next few days.
00:18:47Which means... if we warn these people about what's coming if we try to help them in any way we risk altering a pivotal moment in history and we can't let that happen.
00:18:59Hey, I hate to break up your intimate conversation, but you're next.
00:19:03(phone ringing)
00:19:20Is there something wrong?
00:19:22Well, according to these forms you're supposed to be dims but you're not, are you?
00:19:26I hope you're not disappointed.
00:19:28Pleasantly surprised is more like it.
00:19:30I guess I owe you an apology.
00:19:32If I had known you were gimmes I could've processed your application much sooner.
00:19:36Gimmes?
00:19:38They're American slang terms.
00:19:39I try not to use them but it's a bad habit.
00:19:42Gimmes are people like you, people who are looking for help.
00:19:45A job, a place to live.
00:19:46And what about the dims?
00:19:48Don't they need help?
00:19:50The dims should be in hospitals but the government can't afford to keep them there, so we get them instead.
00:19:55I hate it, but that's the way it is.
00:19:58I see here that you both have just arrived in San Francisco.
00:20:02Do you have any jobs lined up?
00:20:03No. Um, actually, we weren't planning on staying here very long.
00:20:08Have you got a place to stay, or anyone who can vouch for you?
00:20:10No, we were traveling with a friend, but we were separated right after we arrived.
00:20:16You have any way of contacting this friend of yours?
00:20:18Not at the moment.
00:20:19Well, in that case
00:20:22I'm afraid you're going to have to stay here in the Sanctuary for the time being.
00:20:26You mean we can't leave?
00:20:27It's for your own safety.
00:20:28Really?
00:20:30And it's the law.
00:20:31SISKO: What about jobs?
00:20:33How are we supposed to find a place to work and somewhere to live if we're stuck in here?
00:20:38Well, one of the services we provide is job placement.
00:20:41And how long does that usually take?
00:20:43I wish I could give you a definite answer but jobs are hard to come by right now what with the economy and all.
00:20:50My advice is to be patient.
00:20:53In the meantime, take these.
00:20:55They're your ration cards.
00:20:58You can use them to get food and water at any of the distribution points in the district.
00:21:01Hang onto them.
00:21:03Where are we supposed to stay while we're here?
00:21:06Anywhere you like.
00:21:08The buildings in the district are there for everyone to use.
00:21:12Thanks for your help.
00:21:14One more thing.
00:21:16A little advice.
00:21:17Stay away from district security.
00:21:19They've had their budget cut again.
00:21:22They're overworked and underpaid.
00:21:24Just give them a lot of space, and watch out for ghosts.
00:21:27- Ghosts? - That's what we call people who haven't integrated well into the Sanctuary.
00:21:33They can be dangerous and they tend to prey on other residents.
00:21:37Thanks for the warning.
00:21:38We'll stay away from them.
00:21:44Dax to Sisko.
00:21:47Dax to Bashir.
00:21:49If you can hear me, please respond.
00:21:55Okay.
00:21:57My assistant was able to get you a room at the Clift for the next five nights.
00:22:02You didn't have to do that.
00:22:04I know that, but I wanted to.
00:22:06So, uh, what are your plans?
00:22:09I still have to find my friends.
00:22:11Well, I hope you don't mind but I had Britt do some checking.
00:22:14No one matching their descriptions has been admitted to any of the city hospitals
00:22:18- or trauma wards. - That's good news.
00:22:20Look, uh, I would like to know how this turns out.
00:22:24I'm having a little get-together here tomorrow in the office, and I'd like you to come-- if you want-- you and your friends.
00:22:31I'd like that.
00:22:40Well, good luck.
00:22:41Thanks. I could use it.
00:22:49Whoa. You guys can't come in here.
00:22:52BASHIR: We're just looking for somewhere to sleep.
00:22:54Well, you're going to have to look someplace else.
00:22:56Oh, let me guess-- this building is full.
00:22:58Sorry.
00:23:02Every building we go to, it's the same story.
00:23:04They can't all be full.
00:23:06Don't be so sure.
00:23:07One of the main complaints against the Sanctuary Districts was overcrowding.
00:23:11It got to the point where they didn't care how many people were in here.
00:23:15They just wanted to keep them out of sight.
00:23:16And once they were out of sight, what then?
00:23:21I mean, look at this man.
00:23:24There's no need for him to live like that.
00:23:28With the right medication he could lead a full and normal life.
00:23:31Maybe in our time.
00:23:33Not just in our time.
00:23:34There are any number of effective treatments for schizophrenia, even in this day and age.
00:23:40They could cure that man now, today if they gave a damn.
00:23:43It's not that they don't give a damn, they've just given up.
00:23:48The social problems they face seem too enormous to deal with.
00:23:53Well, that only makes things worse.
00:23:56Causing people to suffer because you hate them is terrible but causing people to suffer because you have forgotten how to care--
00:24:05(sighs) that's really hard to understand.
00:24:09They'll remember.
00:24:11It will take some time, and it won't be easy but eventually, people in this century
00:24:16will remember how to care.
00:24:18Right, only it makes you wonder, doesn't it?
00:24:23Are humans really any different than Cardassians or Romulans?
00:24:30If push comes to shove, if something disastrous happens to the Federation, if we are frightened enough, or desperate enough, how would we react?
00:24:42Would we stay true to our ideals or would we just stay here right back where we started?
00:24:51I don't know.
00:24:53But as a Starfleet officer it's my job to make sure we never have to find out.
00:25:05(groaning)
00:25:08MAN: Get his food card.
00:25:10Remember, Doctor, we can't interfere.
00:25:14You got a problem?
00:25:16No problem.
00:25:17MAN: You look upset.
00:25:19If we've done anything to offend you please let us know, so that we can be sure not to do it again.
00:25:25Don't worry about us.
00:25:26- We're new here. - Really?
00:25:28- I never would have guessed. - (gang chuckles)
00:25:30But let me be the first to welcome you.
00:25:33Would you like a piece of this?
00:25:36No, thanks.
00:25:39Gimmes... no sense of fun.
00:25:43We're just looking for a place to sleep.
00:25:49Well, in that case... you better look somewhere else... new boy.
00:25:58You heard what he said.
00:25:59Let's go.
00:26:04Enjoy your stay!
00:26:06And in a few days
00:26:08I know you're going to feel right at home.
00:26:12Bye!
00:26:25So, in theory, we should be able to travel into the past by focusing the transporter beam through the polarized chroniton particles.
00:26:34The problem is, we don't know
00:26:36where in time Sisko and the others are.
00:26:37I've narrowed it down to a dozen different possibilities, but we only have enough polarized chronitons to make five or six attempts.
00:26:44Then we'll have to take our chances.
00:26:47Pick the most likely time periods and send a team down with tricorders to find them.
00:26:51The hard part will be to find a couple of volunteers crazy enough to risk getting lost in time to do the job.
00:26:58I think I know a few likely candidates.
00:27:04(scattered indistinct conversations)
00:27:20Here you go, Julian.
00:27:22Oh... oh...
00:27:25(coughs)
00:27:27Oh...
00:27:30If we ever get home
00:27:31I promise never to complain about the station's Cardassian beds ever again.
00:27:37(both chuckle)
00:27:39Oh, where is everybody?
00:27:41In the food lines, waiting for breakfast.
00:27:43It's not much to look at but it's better than nothing.
00:27:47Uh, I'm sorry.
00:27:49They ran out of utensils... and napkins.
00:27:51Why am I not surprised?
00:27:54When you're finished eating,
00:27:55I think we should get up on the roof of one of these buildings.
00:27:58I want to get a better look at the place.
00:27:59Do you think there's a way out of here?
00:28:01If there is, we'll find it.
00:28:04Mm-hmm.
00:28:17Hey.
00:28:19MAN: Not you two guys again.
00:28:22Look, I told you, we don't have any room.
00:28:23We're not here to stay. All we want to do is
00:28:26- to get up on the roof and-- - It doesn't matter what you want.
00:28:28You can't come in.
00:28:30We got to protect what's ours around here.
00:28:32Look, maybe we could make a deal.
00:28:34Isn't there something we could exchange in order to get access to the roof?
00:28:38I don't know.
00:28:40What do you got to offer?
00:28:43Uh-huh, that's what I thought.
00:28:45Look, maybe you guys should try another building.
00:28:53(whispers inaudibly)
00:28:55Hey, uh... wait a minute.
00:28:59Maybe... we can make a deal after all.
00:29:09(door shuts)
00:29:14SISKO: Well, at least now we look like we belong here.
00:29:18BASHIR: Yeah, and we smell just as bad as everyone else, too.
00:29:26(moans)
00:29:34Stay away from him!
00:29:35Whatever you say.
00:29:37Just put the knife down.
00:29:39Step into the light, so I can see you.
00:29:43We're new here.
00:29:45We're just trying to get to the roof.
00:29:47Get a better look at the place.
00:29:49Believe me, it doesn't look any better from up there.
00:29:52Dad...
00:29:53(moans)
00:29:58It's going to be okay, Danny.
00:30:01What happened?
00:30:03He was beaten up by some ghosts.
00:30:06My wife went to get help, but there's only one doctor on duty at the Processing Center.
00:30:09Well, why don't you let me take a look?
00:30:11I know a little bit about medicine.
00:30:13Julian...
00:30:14It can't hurt to just look.
00:30:23Hey.
00:30:25I'm just going to take a quick look here, okay?
00:30:36Does that hurt?
00:30:39(inhales sharply)
00:30:42BASHIR: Here?
00:30:43Well, looks like you've been lucky.
00:30:46No broken ribs, and these cuts are mostly superficial.
00:30:49You're going to be okay.
00:30:51You're going to need some clean rags and something to disinfect these wounds.
00:30:55Alcohol should do.
00:30:56I think I can get some.
00:30:59Okay.
00:31:01Here we go.
00:31:07Looks like we made a new friend.
00:31:13FATHER: Hey!
00:31:15You know, the district could use another doctor.
00:31:17I don't really practice anymore.
00:31:19But there are people here who need you.
00:31:21I'm sorry, but they'll have to get along without me.
00:31:26You two are new here so let me explain something to you.
00:31:30You can forget about getting out of here anytime soon.
00:31:33This is your home now.
00:31:35The only help we're going to get is from each other and if we don't start pulling together we're finished.
00:31:39All we want is to be left alone.
00:31:41My mistake.
00:31:43I thought you wanted to get out of here.
00:31:45We do.
00:31:46Well, the only way that's going to happen is if we get organized, and let people on the outside know what's going on in here.
00:31:52Do whatever you want.
00:31:53Just leave us out of it.
00:31:56If you want to be left alone... that's fine with me.
00:32:02But if you want to help us and help yourselves you know where to find me.
00:32:17MAN: Our sea floor mining project is almost ready to go into operation.
00:32:22Now, the Pan-Caribbean government did have some misgivings, but I think we've won them over.
00:32:30I hear you just came back from Christchurch.
00:32:34Yes. Did a little skiing on Mount Cook.
00:32:36You're lucky. We had to cancel our trip to the Alps this year because of the student protests in France.
00:32:41I thought the Neo-Trotskyists were going to put a stop to that.
00:32:44They're not having any more luck than the Gaullists did.
00:32:47Europe is falling apart.
00:32:50Well, at least we don't have to worry about that kind of thing here.
00:32:53Don't count on it.
00:32:58You'll have to excuse Jadzia's cynicism.
00:33:00She was just mugged yesterday.
00:33:02That kind of thing's bound to give a negative impression of the future.
00:33:06So... who mugged you?
00:33:08Did you see them?
00:33:10It doesn't really matter.
00:33:12I'm just glad that I wasn't hurt.
00:33:15Well, whoever it was did a very thorough job.
00:33:17They took everything she had, even her I.D.
00:33:20Chris rescued me and let me use his computer to get my replacement I.D.
00:33:24You were lucky the police didn't find you first.
00:33:27If they'd caught you on the street without I.D. you might have ended up in a Sanctuary District.
00:33:33WOMAN: I thought they stopped doing that.
00:33:34MAN: Why would they?
00:33:36It's the only way to keep those people off the streets.
00:33:40Excuse us a minute.
00:33:47- Is that true? - Is what true?
00:33:49About taking people without I.D. to a Sanctuary District.
00:33:53Yes, it is. Why?
00:33:55I still haven't found my friends.
00:33:57And you think they might be in a Sanctuary District?
00:33:59It's possible.
00:34:00If you hadn't found me, I might have wound up in one.
00:34:03Can we check and see if they're inside?
00:34:05Well, it might take some doing.
00:34:07The Sanctuary District records are not posted on the Net.
00:34:12But I might be able to pull in some favors.
00:34:24And I thought the lines at the Replimat were bad.
00:34:26(chuckles)
00:34:28By the time we get dinner, it'll be time for breakfast.
00:34:30You'd think that before they locked thousands of people into a 20-square-block area, they'd give some thought as to how those people were going to get fed.
00:34:38I'm going to see how much longer this is going to take.
00:34:45Hey, Gimme!
00:34:47I'm talking to you.
00:34:49Let me see your food card.
00:34:51What for?
00:34:55Because I said so.
00:34:57Let him go!
00:35:01What?
00:35:02I said let him go!
00:35:05Oh.
00:35:07Well, when you put it like that...
00:35:30(clattering)
00:35:35Leave them alone!
00:35:41Are you all right?
00:35:46(groaning)
00:35:50Get his card!
00:35:51Get his food card!
00:35:56Come on, let's get out of here!
00:35:58Come on. Let's go!
00:36:01Help him!
00:36:03He never would have gotten hurt if it wasn't for us.
00:36:08Breathe, damn you, breathe!
00:36:12God, he's gone.
00:36:14(alarm blares)
00:36:15Come on. We've got to get out of here!
00:36:35Cover!
00:36:53They're gone.
00:36:55For now, but they're the least of our worries.
00:36:58That man who just got killed trying to help us-- that man was Gabriel Bell.
00:37:07Oh...
00:37:13If only I'd had my medkit, or even if I'd got him to a hospital
00:37:18I might have been able to save him.
00:37:20You did all you could, Doctor.
00:37:22But it wasn't enough, was it?
00:37:26A good man died because of us.
00:37:29And what about the hostages?
00:37:30What's going to happen to them?
00:37:31Without Bell, there's a good chance those hostages are going to die.
00:37:37And if that happens?
00:37:39How is it going to affect the future?
00:37:45We have to save them.
00:37:46Whatever it takes, we have to make sure those hostages survive.
00:37:53(sighs)
00:37:59All right, Chief.
00:38:01Let's get over to the transporter room before we change our minds.
00:38:02Too late, Major.
00:38:04Looks like Starfleet's changed our minds for us.
00:38:06Headquarters thinks our plan's too risky.
00:38:09They're afraid that while we're searching for Sisko and the others we may contaminate the timeline.
00:38:14Get me Admiral Wright.
00:38:15I had a feeling you'd say that.
00:38:19- That's odd. - What is it?
00:38:21I'm not getting any response from Starfleet.
00:38:25Is there something wrong with our communications array?
00:38:28I was just talking to Starfleet Security when my comm line went dead.
00:38:31There's nothing wrong at our end.
00:38:33Everything checks out fine.
00:38:35Could be interference on the comm channels.
00:38:37Try a wide band subspace signal.
00:38:40Still nothing.
00:38:42Maybe if I direct it toward one of the Federation communications satellites in Earth orbit...
00:38:50What is it, Chief?
00:38:52They're not there.
00:38:54The entire Earth satellite network... it's gone.
00:39:00- The spacedocks, the orbital habitats? - All of it!
00:39:04The Utopia Planitia Yards on Mars, the Terraforming Stations on Venus,
00:39:09Starfleet Headquarters.
00:39:10I'm not detecting a single sign of Starfleet activity anywhere in this sector.
00:39:15Try a non-Federation frequency.
00:39:17The only subspace signals
00:39:19I'm detecting are from the vicinity of Alpha Centauri and they're Romulan.
00:39:24Well, that's impossible.
00:39:26Do you think Sisko and the others might have somehow altered the timeline?
00:39:31They must've.
00:39:32Then why weren't we affected?
00:39:34I'm not sure.
00:39:35But maybe... maybe when it exploded the singularity that polarized the chroniton particles created some kind of subspace bubble around the ship-- isolated it from the changes in the timeline.
00:39:50I'm not sure, but I'll have to run some tests.
00:39:53One thing's for certain.
00:39:55Right now, this ship is all that's left of Starfleet.
00:40:05I thought you didn't want to get involved.
00:40:07We've changed our minds.
00:40:10Glad to hear it.
00:40:12We can use all the help we can get.
00:40:14This place is about to explode.
00:40:17Most of us agreed to live here because they promised us jobs.
00:40:21I don't know about you, but I haven't been on any job interviews lately and neither has anyone else.
00:40:27They've forgotten about us.
00:40:29So, what do we do?
00:40:30We make them remember.
00:40:32Day after tomorrow we're going to hold a rally outside the Processing Center.
00:40:37I want everyone to be there-- gimmes, ghosts, even the dims.
00:40:41I want to remind the people outside that we haven't done anything wrong that we're not criminals and that we don't deserve to live like this.
00:40:49We'll spread the word.
00:40:51Good.
00:40:53One more thing.
00:40:55Tell people when they come to the rally to bring their families, their kids, and try to look their best.
00:41:05We're not derelicts no matter what they say about us.
00:41:09I could probably use a shave.
00:41:11Not to mention a bath.
00:41:17Yes.
00:41:20Yes, thank you.
00:41:23You were right.
00:41:24Your friends are in Sanctuary District "A."
00:41:27When can we get them out?
00:41:29Well, it might not be that easy.
00:41:31The Sanctuary personnel first have to find them.
00:41:33And there's something like 10,000 people in there.
00:41:35- Did they say how long it would take? - They're not sure.
00:41:37But don't worry, your friends are fine.
00:41:39That's the whole point of the Sanctuary-- to give people in trouble food and a place to stay.
00:41:44If that's all it's for then why is there a wall around it?
00:41:51BASHIR: ...in two days, in front of the Processing Center.
00:41:53- Will you spread the word? - MEN: All Right.
00:41:54SISKO: Okay, you got it? The day after tomorrow.
00:41:56Try to be there, and tell everyone else you know.
00:42:01That's, uh, 500 people we've talked to today.
00:42:03That only leaves about 9,000 to go.
00:42:06Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down!
00:42:08What's going on?
00:42:09One of the guards got in a fight with a dim down, down at Processing.
00:42:12Now everyone's going crazy.
00:42:14I have to find my dad.
00:42:15(explosion)
00:42:16(people yelling)
00:42:20(alarm blaring)
00:42:26(crowd shouting)
00:42:39(grunting)
00:42:43Give me that! Get back!
00:42:47(gunshot)
00:42:49Get away! Get away from him!
00:42:52Come on, we have to get him off the street!
00:43:06(crowd yelling)
00:43:08Everybody put your hands on your head and face the wall!
00:43:11You can't do this.
00:43:12I can do anything I want.
00:43:16Now... up against the wall.
00:43:19That's enough!
00:43:24Well, look who we've got here.
00:43:28Way to show initiative, new boy.
00:43:32Take him, and throw him back there along with the rest of our, uh, guests.
00:43:37What the hell do you think you're doing?
00:43:39I think I am making a political statement.
00:43:43Maybe if we're lucky I might even be able to stage a nice little, uh, photo op.
00:43:49I hope that meets with your approval.
00:43:54Do as he says.
00:44:02Well, all right!
00:44:03I've waited a long time for this!
00:44:08And I know I won't be disappointed.
00:44:12Ain't that right, new boy?
00:44:16The name is Bell.
00:44:19Gabriel Bell.
