00:00:01SISKO: Station Log, Stardate 48543.2.
00:00:05A team of Cardassian scientists
00:00:06is coming to the station to assist us
00:00:09in deploying a subspace relay in the Gamma Quadrant.
00:00:11If successful, it will allow communication
00:00:14through the wormhole for the first time.
00:00:17I've assigned these quarters to the senior Cardassian scientist, her name is Ulani.
00:00:22Her colleague, Gilora, has the adjacent room.
00:00:25It's warm in here.
00:00:26I take it you reset the environmental controls.
00:00:29I also had Chief O'Brien reprogram the replicators to provide Cardassian food.
00:00:33Security measures?
00:00:34I've assigned two of my people to follow the Cardassians at all times.
00:00:37Fine, have them keep their distance.
00:00:39I want the Cardassians to feel like guests, not prisoners.
00:00:42Commander, there are still elements opposed to the peace treaty between Cardassia and Bajor on both sides.
00:00:49We have to be prepared for trouble.
00:00:51I realize that, but while the Cardassians are here
00:00:53I want the Bajorans to get used to seeing them walking on the Promenade... buying from their shops, eating from their restaurants... getting to know them as something other than brutal overseers.
00:01:03( door opens )
00:01:05I just received the final update from the Cardassians on the transceiver they designed for the communications relay.
00:01:11How does it look?
00:01:12I'm still not convinced it's going to work.
00:01:16The Cardassians seem sure that it will.
00:01:17I hope they're right.
00:01:23Whose quarters are these--
00:01:25Gilora's or Ulani's?
00:01:28Ulani's.
00:01:30And how do you know their names?
00:01:31I was just informed an hour ago.
00:01:34Odo, please...
00:01:37I have a bottle of kanar for each of them... along with a personal invitation to Quark's.
00:01:45Where did you get real kanar?
00:01:47I've had three cases in my storeroom since the occupation.
00:01:51There hasn't been much call for it the past few years... but that's about to change.
00:01:57There are only two Cardassians coming to the station.
00:01:59How much kanar do you think they can drink?
00:02:02There may only be two for now, but there'll be more thanks to the peace treaty.
00:02:06And as the 34th Rule of Acquisition states
00:02:08"Peace is good for business."
00:02:10That's the 35th Rule.
00:02:12Oh, you're right. What's the 34th?
00:02:15"War is good for business."
00:02:17It's easy to get them confused.
00:02:18The way I see it, it won't be long before there's a permanent
00:02:22Cardassian presence on the station... scientists, diplomats... spies.
00:02:28And they'll all be welcome at Quark's.
00:02:31As long as they can pay.
00:02:33Rumor has it that the shop next door to mine is going out of business.
00:02:38I'm thinking of renting it and setting up a few Cardassian gaming concessions.
00:02:44There'll be no live vole fights on the Promenade, Quark.
00:02:48I would never be party to anything so cruel and inhumane.
00:02:52But, of course, if some Cardassians happen to bring their voles along and they happened to get into a fight
00:03:01I could hardly be held responsible for...
00:03:03Oh, yes, you could.
00:03:05And you will be.
00:03:08Fine.
00:03:10Forget the vole fights.
00:03:13But I'll tell you this.
00:03:15Good kanar is hard to find.
00:03:16And I have three cases of it.
00:03:18But that's just the beginning.
00:03:21Soon, Quark's will become known as the best place for Cardassian food and drink in this sector.
00:03:26I'll probably set up daily shipments from Cardassia.
00:03:29I may even need to buy my own transport ship.
00:03:33Quark, this kanar has gone bad.
00:03:37What?!
00:03:38I suggest you take your bottles and leave, Quark before I have you arrested for attempting to poison our guests.
00:03:59Excuse me, Commander.
00:04:00There's a Vedek Yarka here to see you.
00:04:03He says it's urgent.
00:04:07Thank you for seeing me, Emissary.
00:04:09What can I do for you?
00:04:11I am here with a warning from the Prophets.
00:04:13They don't want you to let the Cardassians come aboard this station.
00:04:16If you do, you will bring destruction on us all.
00:04:21( sighs )
00:06:25Are you making some sort of threat, Vedek?
00:06:27Not at all.
00:06:29I'm simply telling you what was foretold in the ancient texts.
00:06:32Ancient texts... you mean a prophecy?
00:06:33Trakor's Third.
00:06:35When he first encountered the Orb of Change.
00:06:37I'm afraid I don't know it.
00:06:39Perhaps you should make more time to study the texts, child.
00:06:43Are you saying that the arrival of the Cardassian scientists was foretold in a Bajoran prophecy?
00:06:47Exactly.
00:06:48Trakor's words are clear.
00:06:50"When the river wakes, stirred once more to Janir's side three vipers will return to their nest in the sky."
00:06:58The river has awoken, Emissary.
00:07:00The Qui'al Dam was just put back into operation to divert water to the city.
00:07:05Just as Trakor prophesied over 3,000 years ago.
00:07:07And even now, the vipers are making their way here.
00:07:09And I take it you think the vipers are a reference to the Cardassian scientists?
00:07:14Yes, and this station is their nest in the sky.
00:07:20And how exactly is their presence here going to bring destruction on us all?
00:07:26Trakor said
00:07:28"When the vipers try to peer through the temple gates
00:07:30"a sword of stars will appear in the heavens.
00:07:33The temple will burn, and the gates will be cast open."
00:07:36You must not let the Cardassians come here.
00:07:39You must not let them violate the Celestial Temple or they will destroy it and Bajor will be cut off from the Prophets forever.
00:07:46Slow down. Now, let me get this straight.
00:07:49You're saying that the vipers-- the Cardassians-- are going to destroy the wormhole?
00:07:53Don't you see?
00:07:55This communications relay you hope to create is part of the prophecy.
00:07:59It will allow the vipers to peer through the temple gates-- the wormhole, as you call it.
00:08:05And if they do, the temple will be destroyed.
00:08:08Even if we accept that the Cardassians are the vipers there are only two of them coming, not three.
00:08:14Isn't it possible that there are other mistakes in your interpretation of the prophecy as well?
00:08:19There will be three vipers, you will see.
00:08:22SISKO: Do you understand what this communications relay could mean for Bajor?
00:08:26If it works, we'll be able to stay in contact with ships in the Gamma Quadrant.
00:08:30It'll facilitate exploration help us monitor Dominion activity give us warning in case of an attack.
00:08:37None of that matters.
00:08:40You must listen to me.
00:08:41I know it is difficult for you to accept because you are not Bajoran.
00:08:45I have studied the prophecies all my life.
00:08:48We are on the verge of a great disaster.
00:08:50Is the Bajoran Assembly aware of this prophecy?
00:08:53Yes... as is the Kai herself.
00:08:56Yet, they still want us to proceed with the establishment of a communications relay.
00:09:00They have chosen to ignore the signs.
00:09:02And that is why I came to you, Emissary because I have faith in you.
00:09:06I know that you will do what must be done.
00:09:09Vedek...
00:09:11I have the utmost respect for your beliefs but I have no intention of calling this project off.
00:09:20I hope that you will reconsider, Emissary.
00:09:24My followers and I will remain on the station and pray that you change your mind.
00:09:29You are free to do that, of course.
00:09:38Major, have Odo find out everything he can about Vedek Yarka and his followers.
00:09:43I don't want them making any trouble while the Cardassians are here.
00:09:57( sighs )
00:10:09I'm Commander Benjamin Sisko and, on behalf of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet Command
00:10:15I'd like to welcome you to Deep Space 9.
00:10:18Thank you, Commander.
00:10:20I'm Dr. Ulani Belor.
00:10:21Gilora Rejal.
00:10:22The Cardassian government wishes to express its gratitude to the Federation for agreeing to work together on this project.
00:10:30It is our hope that it is the first of many such projects between our peoples.
00:10:35That's a hope I can assure you we share.
00:10:37This is my First Officer, Major Kira.
00:10:40And on behalf of the Bajoran provisional government
00:10:42I'd like to welcome you.
00:10:44It is our belief that this project will mark the beginning of a new era of peace for Bajor and Cardassia.
00:10:49Thank you, Major.
00:10:52Well... now that we've gotten the formalities out of the way how was your trip?
00:10:58Exhausting.
00:11:01We spent most of it rehearsing what we were going to say when we got here.
00:11:05We're scientists, not diplomats.
00:11:06You did very well.
00:11:08Please feel free to let the Central Command know that.
00:11:11In the past few days
00:11:13I've been contacted by Guls I haven't even heard of all of them wanting to emphasize how important this mission is.
00:11:20I know what you mean.
00:11:22I've gotten three calls from Starfleet Command just this morning.
00:11:25( laughs )
00:11:27Major Kira
00:11:29I want to thank you personally for allowing us to come here.
00:11:32Me?
00:11:33You're the ranking
00:11:34Bajoran officer on this station.
00:11:36I'm sure we wouldn't be here if you had been opposed to working with us.
00:11:41I'll work with anyone who's interested in peace.
00:11:43I'm glad we already have so much in common.
00:11:48Well, why don't I show you to your quarters?
00:11:58The signaling platform we've designed is intended to be positioned in the Gamma Quadrant, at this point-- two kilometers from the far mouth of the wormhole.
00:12:06Our transceiver is being configured to fit inside it and use its existing power grid.
00:12:11GILORA: A similar transceiver will be put in place here on Terok Nor-- on Deep Space 9.
00:12:19Ulani, I've looked over your design specifications.
00:12:22I'm not clear on what sort of carrier wave you're planning on using to cut through the interference on the inside of the wormhole.
00:12:29We're planning to test various types of soliton pulses.
00:12:32One of them should maintain the required signal integrity.
00:12:36We tried something similar about a year ago without much success.
00:12:38Yes, the Bajoran government made your data available to us.
00:12:41I believe the problem had to do with the phase variance in your transceiver coils.
00:12:46Well, I configured those coils myself.
00:12:48The variance was less than .01 percent.
00:12:51Which, as you saw, was unacceptably high.
00:12:55Our new design has less than half that variance.
00:12:57You don't mind if I look at the specs?
00:12:59If you think it's necessary.
00:13:02Commander... we'll need to make a few adjustments to the station's signaling array so that it can accommodate the type of transmissions we're planning to use.
00:13:11Chief O'Brien's people can assist you with that.
00:13:13And when you're ready we'll take the Defiant to the Gamma Quadrant deploy the communications relay and start running tests.
00:13:20Excellent.
00:13:22Well, it's been a long day.
00:13:25We'd like to get some rest so we can start fresh tomorrow.
00:13:28I'll have someone show you to your quarters.
00:13:31Thank you, but that won't be necessary.
00:13:33Thank you.
00:13:39Now, those are about the two friendliest vipers I have ever met.
00:13:43I'll explain later.
00:13:46( door opens )
00:13:48Commander, I almost forgot to tell you.
00:13:51Another colleague of ours, Dejar will be arriving later today.
00:13:54I'll arrange quarters.
00:13:55Thank you.
00:13:59So... we need to discuss what we're going to do about...
00:14:05What is it, Major?
00:14:07There are going to be three of them.
00:14:10Yes?
00:14:11Three vipers... just like in the prophecy.
00:14:28ODO: It turns out that Vedek Yarka is no longer a Vedek at all.
00:14:31He was stripped of his title two months ago.
00:14:33Why?
00:14:34Officially, for teachings not in keeping with the Bajoran faith.
00:14:39But according to my sources, he was defrocked because he led a series of protests against the Vedek Assembly when they endorsed the peace treaty with Cardassia.
00:14:49So Yarka may be using this prophecy as a way to scuttle the peace treaty.
00:14:54That would seem to be his agenda.
00:14:56And it's probably coloring his view of the prophecy just as your agenda colors how you see it.
00:15:02I don't have an agenda, Odo.
00:15:04I want this project to succeed because I want the peace treaty to succeed.
00:15:08If I thought for a moment that there was any possibility that this communications relay could cause damage to the wormhole
00:15:16I'd put a stop to it right now.
00:15:17That's not the agenda I was referring to, Commander.
00:15:21Oh?
00:15:22I was referring to your desire to distance yourself from the title of Emissary.
00:15:27It's just an observation, of course but it's always seemed to me that you've never been comfortable with it.
00:15:39( sighs )
00:15:41I can't deny that.
00:15:46Are you suggesting that I'm dismissing this prophecy too easily because I don't want to be the Emissary?
00:15:54I'm not suggesting anything but it's been my experience that all humanoids have an agenda of some sort and that their agendas can influence them without their even realizing it.
00:16:09Morn came by the Infirmary this afternoon.
00:16:11He had an acute case of food poisoning.
00:16:13Morn? I didn't think anything could make him sick.
00:16:15Well, he said he had a bad glass of kanar at Quark's.
00:16:19He should ask for a refund.
00:16:20Apparently, it was on the house.
00:16:22Major, may I have a word with you?
00:16:24I'll see you later.
00:16:26What can I do for you, Vedek?
00:16:28Have you been able to convince the Emissary to reconsider his decision?
00:16:33I haven't tried and I'm not planning to.
00:16:35But you must.
00:16:36If not, the Celestial Temple will be destroyed.
00:16:38I'm not convinced that's going to happen.
00:16:40Don't you believe in the prophecies?
00:16:42Yes.
00:16:43And don't you believe that Commander Sisko is the Emissary?
00:16:46Vedek, you have to understand my position here.
00:16:49Commander Sisko is my superior officer.
00:16:52I have to deal with him on that basis first.
00:16:54So you do believe he is the Emissary.
00:16:56You just don't want him to know that.
00:16:58I understand.
00:17:00You want him to know that he can count on you as an officer under his command.
00:17:04You want to keep your work and your faith separate.
00:17:07Yes, and for three years now, I have.
00:17:08I'm afraid that's no longer possible.
00:17:11The Prophets have chosen you to help the Emissary make this decision.
00:17:15A decision that has profound implications for all of Bajor.
00:17:18You must convince him to make the Cardassians leave before the sword of stars appears.
00:17:23Vedek, if you're asking me to...
00:17:25It is not I who is asking, it is the Prophets.
00:17:28If you turn your back on them now you're abandoning your faith.
00:17:32And without your faith, Nerys what do you have left?
00:17:45I prefer the serialist poets from the First Republic, like Iloja of Prim.
00:17:50He's easily my favorite Cardassian writer.
00:17:53It is so rare to meet a non-Cardassian who appreciates our literature.
00:17:57I took an interest because I had the chance to meet Iloja.
00:18:01You knew him?
00:18:02One of my previous hosts
00:18:04Tobin, met him while he was in exile on Vulcan.
00:18:07As I recall, he had quite a temper. Really?
00:18:11QUARK: I believe this is the party you're looking for.
00:18:14ULANI: Dejar.
00:18:16May I introduce Jadzia Dax and Miles O'Brien.
00:18:20Our colleague, Dejar.
00:18:22We weren't expecting you so soon.
00:18:24I was able to arrange special transportation.
00:18:27I'm sure you were.
00:18:30I took the liberty of preparing a few of our special Cardassian delicacies.
00:18:40Tojal in yamok sauce.
00:18:43Regova eggs.
00:18:44All fresh, not replicated.
00:18:50Well, enjoy.
00:18:56Is something wrong?
00:18:57It's just...
00:18:59I don't really care for Cardassian cuisine.
00:19:03GILORA: We try to avoid it whenever possible.
00:19:06( chuckling )
00:19:08Fortunately, those of us in the Science Ministry are provided with a wide variety of off-world food.
00:19:13Yes, we're actually quite spoiled.
00:19:15Some of us even think of ourselves as better than the average Cardassian.
00:19:27The main switching relays are in here.
00:19:30I think we should hook your transceiver to the ODN interface through the...
00:19:34What happened to these couplings?
00:19:36What? Oh, I-I made some modifications.
00:19:39Well, these relays don't have nearly as much carrying capacity as before.
00:19:44They won't be able to handle the signal load from the transceiver.
00:19:47Well, in order to bring the system up to Starfleet code, I had to take out the couplings to make room for a secondary backup.
00:19:54Starfleet code requires a second backup?
00:19:57In case the first one fails.
00:20:01What are the chances that both a primary system
00:20:03and its backup would fail at the same time?
00:20:06Well, it's very unlikely, but, in a crunch
00:20:08I wouldn't like to be caught without a second backup.
00:20:13Well!
00:20:14( pounds fist )
00:20:15What's done is done.
00:20:17I'll try to figure out what we should do next.
00:20:20Well, I think our best bet would be to go...
00:20:22Please, please just give me a moment to think.
00:20:25Fine.
00:20:27I'll just sit here quietly.
00:20:29Huh. In that case, could you get me a cup of red leaf tea?
00:20:36Why not?
00:20:53We've loaded the communications relay into the Defiant's cargo bay.
00:20:56Good.
00:20:58How are Chief O'Brien and Gilora coming along?
00:20:59They've run into some kind of problem but the Chief says the transceiver should be on line in about four hours.
00:21:04We won't be ready much before that anyway.
00:21:06DAX: We've received clearance from Ops, Commander.
00:21:08Release docking clamps and set a course for the wormhole.
00:21:23Full scan.
00:21:25No sign of Dominion activity.
00:21:27No other ships in the area.
00:21:28SISKO: All right, take us into position.
00:21:31Stand by to deploy the relay...
00:21:33Wait a minute.
00:21:34What is it?
00:21:36I'm reading a large mass of ice and ionized gas entering sensor range bearing 215 mark 3.
00:21:42It looks like a rogue comet.
00:21:44Let's have a look.
00:21:45Put it on screen.
00:21:51It's beautiful.
00:21:52DAX: Its core contains unusually high concentrations of silithium.
00:21:56That's why its tail is so bright.
00:21:58The sword of stars.
00:22:10That's a very colorful way to describe a comet, Major.
00:22:18It's just a figure of speech.
00:22:25Well, your sword of stars is going to pass very near the wormhole but not close enough to interfere with our plans.
00:22:31We're in position, Benjamin.
00:22:33Begin a final systems check on the relay station.
00:22:35I want to deploy it within the hour.
00:22:47Major, can I have a word with you?
00:23:00The sword of stars?
00:23:02It certainly looked like that to me.
00:23:05That's open to debate but what is not debatable is that this prophecy has no place on the Bridge of the Defiant especially in front of the Cardassians.
00:23:13At the moment, they are not even aware of it and I want to keep it that way.
00:23:16You're right.
00:23:19It won't happen again.
00:23:21Well...
00:23:27I take it, Major that you believe the prophecy is coming true.
00:23:33Yes, I do.
00:23:35So you think I should call this mission off?
00:23:38Look at what's happened already.
00:23:41The river has returned to Janir, the three vipers now the sword of stars-- each of them predicted by Trakor's prophecy.
00:23:50And then there's you... the Emissary.
00:23:56You're here.
00:23:58You have a decision to make, just like in the prophecy.
00:24:02Do you really believe that I'm the Emissary?
00:24:10I guess I always have.
00:24:12I... never wanted to admit it to myself.
00:24:19It's hard to work for someone who's a religious icon.
00:24:26( sighs )
00:24:31I hope I don't offend your beliefs but I don't see myself as an icon, religious or otherwise.
00:24:39I'm a Starfleet officer, and I have a mission to accomplish.
00:24:43If I call it off, it has to be for some concrete reason something solid, something Starfleet.
00:24:52All right, how about this?
00:24:54The Prophets... the aliens who live in the wormhole as you call them exist outside of linear time.
00:25:02They know the past, present and future.
00:25:03Agreed.
00:25:05It seems perfectly reasonable that they could've communicated their knowledge of the future to a Bajoran named Trakor.
00:25:11He wrote down that knowledge in the form of a prophecy and now, 3,000 years later we are seeing those events unfold.
00:25:19To me, that reasoning sounds concrete, solid.
00:25:22I'd even call it "Starfleet."
00:25:25( chuckles )
00:25:28But that all hinges on how you interpret an ancient text that's been translated and retranslated over the centuries.
00:25:36Words that were couched in metaphor to begin with.
00:25:39I'm sorry, Major but where you see a sword of stars
00:25:44I see a comet.
00:25:46Where you see vipers, I see three scientists.
00:25:51And where you see the Emissary
00:25:54I see a Starfleet officer.
00:25:58Dax to Sisko.
00:26:00Go ahead.
00:26:01We're ready to deploy the relay.
00:26:08On my way.
00:26:16( sighs )
00:26:27All right.
00:26:29Now we just have to shunt the ODN line through the secondary field coils.
00:26:32We can't do that.
00:26:33Why not?
00:26:35Because those coils aren't configured to handle ODN output.
00:26:39Why not?
00:26:40Did you modify them, too?
00:26:42Actually, I replaced them.
00:26:43They were always shorting out on us.
00:26:46Frankly, I don't see how this station kept running during the occupation.
00:26:50Why didn't you tell me you'd replaced the secondary field coils?
00:26:54If you had told me what you were planning to do, I would have.
00:26:58I don't have time to explain everything.
00:27:01What? You think I won't be able to understand?
00:27:04It has been my experience that it...
00:27:07What?
00:27:09That humans aren't good engineers?
00:27:12No, not humans-- males.
00:27:16I beg your pardon?
00:27:18Men just don't seem to have a head for this sort of thing.
00:27:21That's why women dominate the sciences.
00:27:23Maybe on Cardassia, but on this station this man is Chief of Operations and I know more about these systems than anyone, including you.
00:27:33I think I know what the problem is so if you want to get that transceiver on line hand me the laser-torch and give me some room.
00:27:50( sighs )
00:28:03Are we ready on this end?
00:28:04Almost. I'm just about to activate the relay's transmission array.
00:28:08Dejar?
00:28:09Standing by.
00:28:12I am receiving the relay's test signal.
00:28:16Target the signaling array toward the wormhole and initiate a carrier wave in the delta band frequency.
00:28:20Initiating carrier wave.
00:28:22If they receive it on the station they'll send an acknowledging signal in the same frequency.
00:28:32I'm not receiving anything.
00:28:34Then we have to assume it didn't work.
00:28:37Let's try the theta band frequency.
00:28:39Initiating carrier wave.
00:28:45Something's wrong.
00:28:47I'm picking up a neutrino surge from the wormhole.
00:28:54Report!
00:28:56Somehow the carrier wave caused the wormhole to open.
00:28:58The wormhole's gravity well has increased by a factor of three.
00:29:01Terminate the carrier wave and maintain our position.
00:29:10Gravimetric fields have returned to normal.
00:29:13What happened?
00:29:14I'm not sure.
00:29:16The carrier wave shouldn't have affected the wormhole at all.
00:29:18Was there any damage to the relay?
00:29:19None. I'm still receiving the test signal.
00:29:21Benjamin, the gravitational surge altered the course of the comet.
00:29:25It's now heading directly toward the wormhole.
00:29:27If the comet enters the wormhole the silithium in its core will cause a cascade reaction.
00:29:32And collapse the wormhole permanently.
00:29:43Commander's Log, supplemental.
00:29:45With less than five hours
00:29:47before the comet reaches the wormhole
00:29:48I've brought the Defiant back to the station
00:29:50and convened a meeting of the entire science team.
00:29:53DAX: Apparently, the carrier wave we sent created some sort of subspace inversion inside the wormhole.
00:29:59That's what caused the gravity well to form.
00:30:00ULANI: The possibility of subspace inversion was predicted in one of our computer models.
00:30:06Well, that wasn't included in the data you sent us.
00:30:08The probability of such an occurrence was less than two percent-- well within safety limits.
00:30:13We saw no reason to include it in the data we sent you.
00:30:16It would seem that our scientific methodologies differ slightly.
00:30:20It is our practice to examine all possibilities no matter how unlikely, before we proceed with field tests.
00:30:24We would, of course prefer to operate that way, as well.
00:30:28However, since the Science Ministry falls under the jurisdiction of the military we have to follow certain rules.
00:30:35One of them is not to make any project look unnecessarily dangerous.
00:30:38We'll keep that in mind when we resume work on the communications relay.
00:30:42DEJAR: That is an extremely unlikely possibility, Commander.
00:30:44The Science Ministry will undoubtedly wish to assemble a new team before proceeding further.
00:30:51SISKO: That is, of course an internal Cardassian matter.
00:30:56Chief...
00:30:57Dax feels we can't risk using tractor beams to deflect the comet.
00:31:02It would probably break into smaller pieces and we'd have a bigger mess on our hands.
00:31:05The same thing would happen if you tried to destroy it with a phaser beam.
00:31:08Not necessarily.
00:31:10I could modify the Defiant's phaser array to generate a beam wide enough to encompass the entire comet.
00:31:15Vaporizing it evenly, so it won't break up.
00:31:18How long would the modifications take?
00:31:20Three hours.
00:31:21Get on it.
00:31:23We'll be cutting this one pretty close.
00:31:31I've accessed the Defiant's primary phaser relay.
00:31:34I'm going to try shunting it through the warp drive.
00:31:37Won't that overload the relay?
00:31:39Not if we bypass the plasma emitter.
00:31:41I hadn't thought of that.
00:31:47( stammering )
00:31:48The emitter coupling is over there.
00:32:12What are you doing now?
00:32:13I'm decoupling the servos so they don't lock up.
00:32:27You have very steady hands.
00:32:30Well they get the job done, I guess.
00:32:34And right now, the most important job is bypassing the plasma emitter.
00:32:47I assure you, I'm quite fertile.
00:32:50I could provide you with many healthy children if that's your concern, but, quite frankly
00:32:55I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself.
00:32:58Children?
00:32:59What are you talking about?
00:33:02I already have a child
00:33:04and a wife.
00:33:06You're married?
00:33:08Yes, happily!
00:33:10Then why have you been leading me to believe that you wanted me?
00:33:14I haven't.
00:33:16All we've done since we've met is argue.
00:33:20I took your overt irritability toward me as a signal that you wished to pursue some physical relationship.
00:33:28Of course.
00:33:30Well, that's how Cardassians, uh, do things?
00:33:35Oh, my.
00:33:37I'm afraid this is a case of cross-cultural misunderstanding.
00:33:44I think so.
00:33:45Oh.
00:33:46I'm not remotely interested in you.
00:33:50Well, that's not what I meant.
00:33:53Look, you are very attractive and I'm flattered, of course. but...
00:33:57Please, Mr. O'Brien there's no need to continue.
00:34:00You've made your feelings clear.
00:34:06Gilora, we-we have to finish this.
00:34:08I'm sure you can complete the job on your own.
00:34:23Chief O'Brien said the modification to the Defiant's phasers would be ready within half an hour.
00:34:28Half an hour ahead of schedule, hmm?
00:34:31The Chief's a born engineer.
00:34:33He always gives himself a comfortable margin with his repair estimates.
00:34:41Let me guess.
00:34:43You're reading up on Bajoran prophecies concerning the Emissary.
00:34:47There are hundreds of them.
00:34:50Most of them are vague, some are contradictory.
00:34:52But just enough truth in a few of them to make me wonder.
00:34:56You mean some of them have come true?
00:34:58If you interpret them in a certain way, yes.
00:35:01So now you're wondering if Trakor's prophecy is going to come true, as well.
00:35:06I have to admit, it's getting harder to ignore.
00:35:08But, Benjamin, there's every reason to believe we'll be able to destroy the comet.
00:35:12I know.
00:35:14But I'm becoming more and more concerned that if I don't send the Cardassians home something else will go wrong.
00:35:21And the "gates of heaven will burn and be cast open."
00:35:25Let me ask you something.
00:35:27If you never heard Trakor's prophecy what would you do?
00:35:31I'd continue working on the communications relay.
00:35:35Then it seems to me you have a choice.
00:35:39You can either make your own decisions or you can let these prophecies make them for you.
00:35:57As soon as the Defiant is ready have the Cardassians meet us on board.
00:36:03Yes, sir.
00:36:19The comet is directly ahead.
00:36:21Distance, 200 kilometers.
00:36:22Bring us to within ten kilometers.
00:36:24Chief, are your phaser modifications on line?
00:36:27O'BRIEN: Aye, sir.
00:36:28Phasers are locked on target.
00:36:35Holding position at ten kilometers.
00:36:37SISKO: Shields up.
00:36:39Go to Red Alert.
00:36:41Fire!
00:36:47Chief, what the hell happened?
00:36:50I don't know, sir.
00:36:51The entire weapons relay just blew.
00:36:53All defensive systems are down.
00:36:55Benjamin, the sensors show that the modified phasers never came on line.
00:36:58We fired a standard burst and it shattered the comet instead of vaporizing it.
00:37:02There's no way they should have misfired like that.
00:37:04I modified the systems myself.
00:37:06KIRA: Commander, the three fragments are still on course for the wormhole.
00:37:10How soon before they reach the entrance?
00:37:1226 minutes.
00:37:15And without weapons, we have no way of stopping them.
00:37:30The main emitter coupling has been depolarized.
00:37:32I must have accidentally inverted the power flow when I tried to modify the phaser array.
00:37:37I can't believe it.
00:37:39A first-year engineering student wouldn't make a mistake like that.
00:37:43This wasn't your fault, Mr. O'Brien.
00:37:45And it wasn't an accident.
00:37:47Gilora...
00:37:49Dejar is a member of the Obsidian Order.
00:37:51She was assigned to our team for security reasons.
00:37:53I believe she sabotaged this coupling.
00:37:57SISKO: The Order has always been opposed to the peace treaty with Bajor.
00:38:00They sent you here to sabotage the relay because if the first joint venture between Cardassia and Bajor was a failure it would probably be the last.
00:38:10This is all speculation, Commander.
00:38:12You have no proof.
00:38:14If it was sabotage, a DNA scan on the coupling should reveal who's responsible.
00:38:19Take her to quarters and detain her there.
00:38:24SISKO: Now that the comet's been fractured into smaller pieces can we use the tractor beams to deflect them?
00:38:31They'd just disintegrate further releasing more silithium.
00:38:34If we can't stop the fragments is there any way that we can prevent the silithium from interacting with the wormhole?
00:38:40Maybe if we could contain it somehow.
00:38:42ULANI: If you could generate a subspace field around the fragments that might contain the silithium.
00:38:48The warp drive... it could create a subspace bubble around the ship.
00:38:52But we'd have to maneuver the Defiant between the fragments.
00:38:55They're too close together. There's not enough room.
00:38:57A shuttlepod could maneuver between them.
00:39:00And its warp drive should be able to create a large enough subspace field.
00:39:04Maybe, but it could overload the engines.
00:39:06That's the chance I'll have to take.
00:39:08Major, you have the Bridge.
00:39:10I want you to take the Defiant back into the Alpha Quadrant as soon as I've cleared the shuttlebay.
00:39:16Commander.
00:39:19I want to go with you.
00:39:22Not just because I'm your First Officer but because I believe I'm here to help the Emissary.
00:39:30Dax, the Bridge is yours.
00:39:40We've cleared the shuttlebay.
00:39:42Signal the Defiant that they can leave.
00:39:45They're heading for the wormhole.
00:39:47I'm going to take us in behind the comet fragments.
00:39:51It'll be easier to maneuver into position.
00:40:10Hold position here.
00:40:12They could be in for a rough ride.
00:40:13Stand by transporters in case we need to beam them off the shuttlepod when they clear the wormhole.
00:40:19We're in position.
00:40:21Activate the subspace field.
00:40:24Field engaged.
00:40:30We'll reach the entrance to the wormhole in... five seconds.
00:40:51The subspace field is losing integrity.
00:40:53Some of the silithium is starting to leak through.
00:40:56Divert power from the engines to the subspace field coils.
00:41:00We'll let our own inertia carry us the rest of the way.
00:41:04That helped.
00:41:05We're still losing silithium.
00:41:08I'm picking up a neutrino surge.
00:41:10Something's coming through.
00:41:20( sighs )
00:41:23( sighs )
00:41:24Dax to Sisko.
00:41:25Sisko here.
00:41:26Are you all right, Benjamin?
00:41:28There was some silithium leakage inside the wormhole, but we're fine.
00:41:32I don't believe it.
00:41:34What is it, Chief?
00:41:36I'm picking up the test signal from the communications relay.
00:41:38SISKO: How is that possible?
00:41:40DAX: I'm not sure.
00:41:42We're reading a subspace filament leading back through the wormhole.
00:41:45It's acting like some kind of carrier wave.
00:41:47The comet fragments... they must have left a silithium trail in the wormhole.
00:41:52It's almost like the wormhole was wedged open just a crack... just enough to let subspace signals through.
00:41:59The prophecy came true... all of it.
00:42:05We just misinterpreted Trakor's words.
00:42:12The three vipers.
00:42:14He wasn't talking about the Cardassians.
00:42:17He meant the three comet fragments.
00:42:24The communications relay.
00:42:25In a sense, we've been trying to peer through the temple gates.
00:42:30The silithium ignited the wormhole burning the temple gates.
00:42:36So that they never close again.
00:42:38And it's all because the Emissary... used the sword of stars.
00:42:45And Trakor saw it all...
00:42:483,000 years ago.
00:43:01I just want to say that I appreciate what you did on the Defiant.
00:43:06I hope it doesn't cause you too much trouble when you get back to Cardassia.
00:43:10My superiors in the Science Ministry will protect me.
00:43:13Frankly, I think Dejar's in much more trouble than I.
00:43:16The Order doesn't reward failure.
00:43:19Still, it was a brave thing to do.
00:43:21I didn't want you to take the blame for something that wasn't your fault.
00:43:25I know how proud you are of your work.
00:43:29Too proud, sometimes.
00:43:30It's gotten me into trouble, now and again.
00:43:33What's your wife's name?
00:43:36Keiko.
00:43:38A lucky woman.
00:43:52Emissary, I'm sorry I doubted you.
00:43:55I realize now I let my distrust of the Cardassians blind me to the Prophets' words.
00:44:01It seems that the Prophets want peace between your two peoples, after all.
00:44:04Perhaps so.
00:44:06There are signs that Trakor's Fourth Prophecy will soon come to pass, as well.
00:44:12Don't tell me that it has something to do with me.
00:44:14You, Commander?
00:44:16Well, it is a prophecy about the Emissary.
00:44:19Tell me about it.
00:44:21Trakor's Fourth Prophecy says that the Emissary will face a fiery trial and he'll be forced to choose...
