Valiant
00:00:01MALE: How about it?
00:00:03FEMALE: Can I get some service please?
00:00:05How long's it take?
00:00:07I've been waiting forever.
00:00:08This isn't what I wanted.
00:00:15Having a bad day?
00:00:16Like you care.
00:00:19Fizz, Froth, Flip
00:00:20Finial, Foam and Flare.
00:00:21What's going on at that table anyway?
00:00:25I... take it there's a problem with your drink replicator?
00:00:28A problem?
00:00:30No... can't be.
00:00:33If there were a problem, I would have submitted an emergency maintenance request this morning.
00:00:38And if I had done that
00:00:40Chief O'Brien would have assured me that Rom would fix it right away.
00:00:44Then, of course, Rom would have promised me that Nog would fix it before the end of the day.
00:00:50And since this is the end of the day and there is no Nog in sight we can only draw one conclusion-- that I don't have a problem.
00:01:00Is your drink replicator broken?
00:01:02You're quick today.
00:01:03Do you want me to fix it or not?
00:01:05You? That's right.
00:01:08Nog had a chance to take a trip to Ferenginar, and I told him that I would cover for him while he was away.
00:01:13Why?
00:01:14Because he did a favor for me last week, so I owe him.
00:01:18But... that's work for a mechanic... a repairman, a lowly engineer.
00:01:25I'll tell Chief O'Brien you said that.
00:01:29Ugh...
00:01:32A supernova and a Silven surprise.
00:01:38She can't do this.
00:01:40Why not?
00:01:41I...
00:01:42It-it-it's not right.
00:01:44She's above that sort of thing.
00:01:47Those hands weren't meant for poking around inside some filthy drink replicator.
00:01:52They were meant for higher pursuits.
00:01:55You're in love.
00:02:00That's the most ridiculous thing you've said this year.
00:02:03Really?
00:02:04Really.
00:02:07It must kill you that she's married to Worf.
00:02:10I don't know what you're talking about.
00:02:13Hmm.
00:02:14And since you're not going to order something would you please step aside so that I can do my job?
00:02:20Of course.
00:02:21By the way, that's not a Silven surprise.
00:02:23It's a silken sunrise.
00:02:48Is that it?
00:02:49That's right.
00:02:52Hey, can I see it?
00:02:53No.
00:02:56Nog.
00:02:57No.
00:02:58It's an official diplomatic message from the Federation Council to the Grand Nagus.
00:03:02It's for his eyes only.
00:03:04Yeah, but you know what's in it. Maybe.
00:03:06It's a proposal for an alliance, isn't it?
00:03:09I mean, the Federation sends the only Ferengi in Starfleet to personally deliver a diplomatic message to the Grand Nagus?
00:03:15Something big is up.
00:03:17You told me you weren't coming on this trip as a reporter.
00:03:20I'm not.
00:03:21I-I came to see Ferenginar.
00:03:22I've heard a lot about it.
00:03:24I can't wait to see the-the rain and-and the muck...
00:03:28Good.
00:03:29Because while I'm delivering the message to the Grand Nagus you'll have plenty of time to play tourist.
00:03:34Shenandoah, this is Starbase 257.
00:03:37You've been cleared to leave our defense perimeter.
00:03:40Remain at one-half impulse until you've passed the outer marker.
00:03:43Acknowledged.
00:03:44I don't get to see the Nagus?
00:03:47Now why would you want to see the Grand Nagus?
00:03:49My father told me to say hello.
00:03:52A-a-and... to... give the Nagus his best wishes.
00:03:57You're going to have to do better than that.
00:03:59And... because I told the editor of the Federation News Service that I could get an exclusive interview with Zek.
00:04:07Jake! You promised me you weren't coming along as a reporter.
00:04:10I didn't promise, okay?
00:04:12I just sort of... you know?
00:04:16Okay, I promised, but this could be a really big story, Nog.
00:04:20The people have a right to know.
00:04:22Forget it. You're not getting anywhere near the Grand Nagus.
00:04:25I have no further comments.
00:04:27( beeping )
00:04:29What's that?
00:04:30I'm not sure.
00:04:32I'm having trouble with our long-range scanners.
00:04:35Looks like... our sensors are being jammed.
00:04:39( alarm blares )
00:04:41Uh-oh.
00:04:47Hang on.
00:04:56Where'd they come from?
00:04:57I don't know, but it looks like they're heading for the starbase.
00:05:00We're not sticking around, are we?
00:05:02Not in a runabout, we're not.
00:05:03We're no match for a wing of Jem'Hadar fighters.
00:05:10See if you can open a channel to Deep Space 9.
00:05:13Something's wrong.
00:05:14I think they're jamming our com system.
00:05:17But why would they do that?
00:05:18Because one of them's turned around and now he's coming after us.
00:07:33You do realize you're taking us deeper and deeper into Dominion-held space.
00:07:36We don't have much choice.
00:07:38Every time I try to change course, they gain on us.
00:07:40They're gaining on us anyway.
00:07:41We might as well try and head for the Federation.
00:07:44If we keep going in this direction, we'll run into Cardassia Prime and that won't be much fun at all.
00:07:47COMPUTER: Warning.
00:07:49We are within range of enemy weapons.
00:07:51( explosion )
00:07:53Thanks for the warning.
00:07:55All right, when I go to impulse, raise the forward shields and transfer auxiliary power to the phasers.
00:08:00We're dropping out of warp?
00:08:01If we have to fight, I'd rather do it at impulse.
00:08:04At least we'd have an edge in maneuverability.
00:08:06You're a Ferengi. Why don't you try making a deal or something?
00:08:09It doesn't seem they're very interested in talking.
00:08:13Stand by.
00:08:24Here they come.
00:08:34Shields down 30 percent.
00:08:36I see it.
00:08:37( explosion )
00:08:38We're losing main power!
00:08:40Keep the weapons on line.
00:08:41Everything else is expendable, including life support.
00:08:44( explosion )
00:08:46There's another ship coming in, bearing 170 mark 215.
00:08:52Jem'Hadar or Cardassian?
00:08:53It's, uh... it's the Defiant.
00:08:56What?
00:09:00That's not the Defiant.
00:09:02That ship's registry number is NCC-74...
00:09:05210.
00:09:07USS Valiant.
00:09:08Valiant?
00:09:10Great name! I hope they tear that Jem'Hadar ship apart piece by--
00:09:17Jake.
00:09:18Jake!
00:09:30FEMALE: Are you all right, sir?
00:09:33( groans )
00:09:36Yeah.
00:09:37Uh... it's nothing serious... Cadet, um...
00:09:43Chief?
00:09:45Acting Chief Petty Officer Dorian Collins.
00:09:47The Captain's asked me to escort you both to the Bridge.
00:09:49If you'll follow me.
00:09:54FEMALE: Main power holding.
00:09:56Auxiliary power on standby.
00:09:58Shields holding at 84 percent.
00:10:00Helm, bring us about to course 215 mark 310.
00:10:05215 mark 310. Aye, sir.
00:10:07Set quantum torpedo warheads to maximum yield, full spread.
00:10:10( explosion )
00:10:12Maximum yield, full spread. Aye, sir.
00:10:15( explosion )
00:10:16Helm, initiate attack pattern sierra-four.
00:10:19HELM: Sierra-four. Aye, sir.
00:10:20Shields now at 78 percent.
00:10:22Transfer auxiliary power to shields.
00:10:23This is Red Squad.
00:10:24Red Squad?
00:10:26It was a group of elite cadets at the Academy.
00:10:28They were... the best of the best.
00:10:31Red Squad received special training special quarters, special everything.
00:10:36They have their own ship? I've heard of cadets... getting command of a runabout or a shuttle but not a starship.
00:10:47Fire.
00:10:54( cheering )
00:10:56As you were.
00:10:59This is the Captain.
00:11:00Stand down from Red Alert.
00:11:02All stations submit damage and casualty report to the First Officer.
00:11:08Glad to see you made it in one piece.
00:11:10I'm Tim Watters, Commanding Officer.
00:11:12Welcome aboard.
00:11:13Thank you... sir?
00:11:15"Sir" is correct, Ensign.
00:11:16I was given a battlefield commission and command of this vessel by the late Captain Ramirez.
00:11:21Using that authority, I have commissioned and promoted other members of Red Squad as needed.
00:11:26I see.
00:11:28Well, I'm Ensign Nog and this is Jake Sisko.
00:11:30We're from Deep Space 9.
00:11:32Sisko.
00:11:33You're Benjamin Sisko's son.
00:11:35That's right.
00:11:36Ah, I've heard a lot about your father.
00:11:39I see you're not following in his footsteps.
00:11:41No. I'm a reporter.
00:11:43You should really get that looked at. Chief?
00:11:45Sir?
00:11:46Escort Mr. Sisko to Sick Bay.
00:11:48Aye, Captain.
00:11:49This way, sir.
00:11:50FEMALE: Preliminary damage report, sir.
00:11:53Oh, thank you.
00:11:54Ensign Nog, Commander Karen Farris, our First Officer.
00:11:57Commander.
00:11:59Ensign.
00:12:00Sir, the Engine Room also reports that we still have power spikes cropping up all through the deuterium injector start-up routine.
00:12:06I thought we had that under control.
00:12:08FARRIS: I did, too, sir.
00:12:10Have you recalibrated the lateral impulse control system?
00:12:13No.
00:12:14What does that have to do with the injectors?
00:12:17Well, the impulse system shares some of the same power relays used in the injector start-up routine.
00:12:23We'll try it.
00:12:25Mr. Nog, why don't you wait in my ready room.
00:12:28Yes, sir.
00:12:30The training cruise was supposed to last three months.
00:12:33We had seven regular officers and a crew of 35 cadets.
00:12:36The plan was for the cadets to run the ship while the officers observed and critiqued our performance.
00:12:41So, uh, this was a training ship?
00:12:44Like the other one, the, um... uh... the Republic.
00:12:48Not quite.
00:12:49The Republic's an old ship.
00:12:51I don't think she's left the Terran system in 50 years.
00:12:56The Valiant's a state- of-the-art warship.
00:12:58Our mission was to circumnavigate the entire Federation before returning home.
00:13:03The entire Federation?
00:13:05With a ship of cadets?
00:13:07Not just cadets, Mr. Sisko.
00:13:11Red Squad cadets.
00:13:13We were transiting the Kepla Sector when war broke out.
00:13:16As you probably know, a Dominion invasion force swept through that sector on the first day.
00:13:20So you were caught behind enemy lines.
00:13:23Correct.
00:13:24We were trying to make our way back to Federation-held space when we encountered a Cardassian battle cruiser near El Gatark.
00:13:31That was our first taste of combat.
00:13:33In the first 15 minutes four regular officers were killed.
00:13:37Three others were critically wounded including Captain Ramirez.
00:13:41Is that when you took command?
00:13:43No. When I got to the Bridge, the Captain was in pretty bad shape, but he was lucid and he refused to go to Sick Bay.
00:13:51We had lost main power and we were adrift but the Cardassian cruiser was no better off.
00:13:58So it was a race against the clock-- ship that got main power back on line first would have a decisive advantage.
00:14:08The... the Captain, he... he was amazing.
00:14:14He directed the entire damage-control effort with a punctured lung and massive internal injuries.
00:14:19He was a great man.
00:14:22And he won the race.
00:14:25We got weapons and impulse engines back on line in three hours.
00:14:29And then we destroyed that Cardie ship.
00:14:32The next day, just before he died the Captain ordered me to take command of the Valiant.
00:14:39( laughs )
00:14:40It's unbelievable!
00:14:42You've spent eight months behind enemy lines.
00:14:47I didn't do it alone.
00:14:48The crew deserves the real credit.
00:14:50We have cadets here as young as 17 who are doing the job of officers twice their age.
00:14:55But we're also seriously undermanned.
00:15:01I could use another officer.
00:15:03I'd be happy to do whatever I can, sir.
00:15:06I see you're familiar with the operations of a class-7 warp drive.
00:15:09Very familiar, sir.
00:15:10The Defiant has an identical engine.
00:15:12Excellent.
00:15:14As of this moment, you are Chief Engineer.
00:15:15Congratulations.
00:15:17Chief Engineer?
00:15:18With rank of Lieutenant Commander.
00:15:20Your first assignment is to figure out why we can't go above warp 3.2.
00:15:24Mr. Parton believes that--
00:15:25Excuse me, sir...
00:15:26I-I don't think I'm ready for this--
00:15:29None of us were ready for the responsibility thrust upon us, Commander, but each of us found a way to rise to the occasion-- do the job that had to be done.
00:15:38Ready or not... you are Chief Engineer.
00:15:44You can do this, Mr. Nog.
00:15:46Just have faith in yourself, faith in your shipmates, and everything'll be fine.
00:15:59Yes, sir. I will, sir.
00:16:01Good man.
00:16:02That's what I want to hear.
00:16:04Now, if you can just fix our warp drive problems, we can get on with our mission.
00:16:10Our mission?
00:16:12I don't understand.
00:16:13My orders are to collect technical data on a new Dominion battleship operating in this sector.
00:16:18We keep picking up their com traffic so we know they're in the area but because we can't go faster than warp 3.2 we're unable to get within sensor range.
00:16:27And Starfleet knows you're in command of the Valiant.
00:16:31No.
00:16:33We've had to maintain strict radio silence ever since the war began.
00:16:37The orders were addressed to Captain Ramirez.
00:16:40But since he's dead, the mission's now mine.
00:16:44Make no mistake, I will carry out that mission.
00:16:48Or die trying.
00:16:53( sighs )
00:16:57Dismissed.
00:17:18Coffee?
00:17:19Uh, raktajino, please.
00:17:33Here you go.
00:17:34Thanks.
00:17:40So, where are you from?
00:17:43Me?
00:17:45Tycho City.
00:17:46Oh, a Lunar Schooner.
00:17:50I haven't heard that in a long time.
00:17:52Yeah. Picked it up from my granddad.
00:17:55Of course, he still calls Luna "the moon"-- like it's the only one or something.
00:18:00Well, nobody who's ever lived on the moon calls it Luna either.
00:18:04That's just something they say on Earth.
00:18:05So, what's it like?
00:18:07You're from Earth, aren't you?
00:18:10You've never been to the moon?
00:18:12Just never got around to it.
00:18:15Tell me about it.
00:18:18Well... people say it's so barren and harsh but... it's not.
00:18:26It's... beautiful.
00:18:29I mean, Tycho City's just a city, but outside, where the gravity is still low and there's no air...
00:18:37You know, the sun only comes up once a month on the moon.
00:18:42Every lunar morning, my father and I would put on suits and... hike out across the Sea of Clouds.
00:18:50We'd stop at this collection of boulders on the western rim and... just wait for the sun to come up.
00:19:01Dawn is so... shocking on the moon.
00:19:05One minute, you're in the darkest night you can imagine and the next instant, the sun lifts up and this... glorious pure light just... explodes across the surface.
00:19:23I felt like I met God every morning.
00:19:29I'm on duty. Excuse me.
00:19:34WATTERS: What's your solution, Commander?
00:19:36I've taken the safeties off the plasma intercooler the flux moderator and the pressure-control system.
00:19:41That should solve the problem.
00:19:43You do realize you're violating about 50 safety regulations?
00:19:46Yes, sir, I do, but I also know Chief O'Brien made the same changes to the Defiant.
00:19:51She never had a problem.
00:19:52I don't know, Captain.
00:19:54This seems kind of risky to me.
00:19:56Mr. Parton?
00:19:58After spending seven months plodding along at warp 3.2,
00:20:01I'm willing to try anything, sir.
00:20:05Watters to Bridge. Prepare for warp speed.
00:20:07Aye, sir.
00:20:09All right, Mr. Nog, take us to warp 4.
00:20:39COLLINS: Can I help you, sir?
00:20:41No.
00:20:42No, I've got it.
00:20:45Any problems with Sisko's arm?
00:20:47No, sir.
00:20:56You got a problem, Chief?
00:20:58No, sir.
00:21:04Have you been crying?
00:21:05( sighs )
00:21:07A little.
00:21:09About what?
00:21:12I was... just... thinking about home.
00:21:27Come in.
00:21:28Chief, I think you can go now.
00:21:31Thank you, sir.
00:21:44FARRIS: Well, Mr. Sisko sounds like you and the Chief had quite a conversation this afternoon.
00:21:49Home and family and the glories of dawn on the moon.
00:21:55Does that just about cover it?
00:21:57Yeah, that's, uh... that's about it.
00:21:59What's going on?
00:22:00What's going on, Mr. Sisko, in case you haven't noticed is that we are in the middle of a war.
00:22:06We can't afford to have young cadets thinking about mommy and daddy when they need to be concentrating on their duties.
00:22:11All I did was ask about her home. All you did... was plunge a member of this crew into emotional turmoil.
00:22:17WATTERS: Jake...
00:22:18May I call you Jake?
00:22:22You're a reporter.
00:22:25Your job is to watch the way events unfold not participate in them.
00:22:28Right now, you need to stand back.
00:22:30Take a look at where you are-- what's going on around you.
00:22:33You're right in the middle of a great story-- maybe one of the greatest stories in the entire Dominion war.
00:22:41( sighing )
00:22:43This ship is special, Jake.
00:22:46This crew is special.
00:22:48And whatever fates guide this universe they've chosen us to achieve some purpose in this conflict.
00:22:53I know that.
00:22:55Just as surely as I know your presence on this ship is no coincidence.
00:22:59You're here to write the story-- to tell people of the Valiant and her crew.
00:23:04Don't interfere with the story, Jake.
00:23:06Don't become a part of it.
00:23:09Just let it unfold around you.
00:23:11Observe, listen and then write it down.
00:23:15May I have your word you'll stay away from Chief Collins?
00:23:22Okay.
00:23:24Thank you, Jake.
00:23:25You're dismissed.
00:23:34I'm not sure we can trust him.
00:23:36We'll keep an eye on him.
00:23:38What about Mr. Nog?
00:23:40Mr. Nog wears a uniform.
00:23:42He'll do his duty.
00:23:44All right. That'll be all, Commander.
00:23:47I'll see you at 1800 hours.
00:23:48Yes, sir.
00:23:55Captain are you all right?
00:23:58Yes. Why?
00:24:01I heard you were on the Bridge during midwatch again last night.
00:24:04You haven't been getting much sleep lately, sir.
00:24:07None of us have, Commander.
00:24:09No, sir, I suppose not.
00:24:14Thank you for your concern, Karen... but I'm... I'm fine, really.
00:24:21Yes, sir.
00:24:22I'm sorry I even brought it up.
00:24:24That's all right.
00:24:41( sighing )
00:25:01Where've you been?
00:25:02Engine Room.
00:25:03I solved their warp problem.
00:25:05What's that?
00:25:06My Red Squad insignia.
00:25:08Oh, and in case you haven't noticed, this would be my new rank--
00:25:11Lieutenant Commander Nog, Chief Engineer.
00:25:14It has a nice ring to it... don't you think? You joined the crew?
00:25:17Something wrong with that? It's a little fast.
00:25:20We just got here and Watters puts you in charge of the Engine Room?
00:25:23Captain Watters is used to making quick decisions.
00:25:25He felt I was the right man for the job, so he promoted me.
00:25:28Red Alert. All hands to battle stations.
00:25:32I repeat, all hands to battle stations.
00:25:36Range: 1.32 light-years.
00:25:39Speed: warp 4.7.
00:25:41What's going on?
00:25:43We found our battleship.
00:25:45HELMSMAN: Their course is 170 mark 135.
00:25:49Speed: warp 3.97.
00:25:50FARRIS: Bridge to phaser control.
00:25:52You've got a spike in the 3-L subsystem.
00:25:54Take care of it.
00:25:55Sensors show a drop in gamma radiation...
00:25:58...is losing power. I'll reroute at the auxiliary power interface.
00:26:01HELMSMAN: They've changed course.
00:26:02Any sign they've detected us?
00:26:04Negative. I think we're still outside their sensor range.
00:26:07Maintain your distance, Helm.
00:26:08Match their course and speed.
00:26:09Aye, sir.
00:26:10Prepare a class-3 probe for launch.
00:26:12Aye, sir.
00:26:14What happens now?
00:26:17We're going to launch a sensor probe to scan the battleship.
00:26:20That way, the Valiant won't be picked up on their scanners.
00:26:24Won't they detect a probe?
00:26:26Class-3 probes are designed to be virtually undetectable.
00:26:29There's almost no chance of it being spotted.
00:26:31JAKE: Almost?
00:26:32I don't remember anyone inviting you to the Bridge.
00:26:42WATTERS: Captain's Log, Stardate 51825.4.
00:26:46We've been shadowing the Dominion battleship for three hours.
00:26:49The data our probe has gathered so far
00:26:51has not only been interesting
00:26:53but it may have given us a golden opportunity
00:26:55to strike a blow for the Federation.
00:26:57Attention on deck!
00:27:02Stand at ease.
00:27:07It's been a long eight months-- a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice.
00:27:11And now we've accomplished our mission.
00:27:13We found the battleship and obtained a complete scan without being detected... and we're free to go home.
00:27:22But that ship out there is a direct threat to every Federation outpost and colony within 50 light-years.
00:27:31That ship must be destroyed.
00:27:34( crew murmuring )
00:27:39It can be destroyed.
00:27:42Commander?
00:27:43We found a flaw in the design of their antimatter storage system.
00:27:48The primary support braces are made of viterium.
00:27:52It's a very strong, very resilient metal alloy which just happens to become extremely unstable when exposed to delta radiation.
00:28:00A single torpedo, rigged with a radiogenic warhead could reduce those braces to the consistency of wet pasta.
00:28:06WATTERS: As a result, the entire antimatter storage system would tear itself apart.
00:28:12Commander Nog.
00:28:14You don't seem convinced.
00:28:17Well, sir, in-in order to rig a torpedo to yield a delta radiation burst,
00:28:22I'll have to remove most of the guidance systems.
00:28:25We'll have to target it manually.
00:28:27FARRIS: We've trained for that possibility.
00:28:29It shouldn't be a problem.
00:28:31We'll also have to get very close to the target.
00:28:34How close?
00:28:37Within 300 meters.
00:28:39( crew murmuring )
00:28:43It's dangerous, there's no disputing that.
00:28:45And no one would think any less of us if we just turn around and go home.
00:28:49But that means that some other ship with some other crew would be asked to finish the job that we started.
00:28:56I think we can do it.
00:28:59I think we should do it.
00:29:06Can I say something?
00:29:07You are not a member of this crew.
00:29:09Let him speak.
00:29:12You all probably know who my father is.
00:29:14Benjamin Sisko?
00:29:16So you know I'm not exaggerating when I say that he's considered to be one of the best combat officers in the fleet, and I'm telling you right now that even with the entire crew of the Defiant with him, my father would never try to pull off something like this.
00:29:33And if he can't do it, it can't be done.
00:29:36We're Red Squad and we can do anything.
00:29:40CREW: Yeah! Red Squad!
00:29:42( chanting ): Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:44Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:45Red Squad! Red Squad! Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:48Red Squad! Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:52Red Squad! Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:55Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:29:56Red Squad! Red Squad! Red Squad!
00:30:01JAKE: This is suicide.
00:30:03No. It's not.
00:30:05Nog, listen to me.
00:30:06We're in way over our heads here.
00:30:09Now, someone told me that ship out there is twice the size of a Galaxy-class ship... and three times as strong. That's accurate.
00:30:16And you really think we can go up against a ship like that?
00:30:18I think that Captain Watters knows... what he's doing. Oh, really?
00:30:22Well, uh, did you know that Watters has been taking cordafin stimulants for the past two months?
00:30:27Where did you hear that?
00:30:29Dorian told me.
00:30:30You were ordered to stay away from her.
00:30:32Watters to Shepard.
00:30:33Please report to my ready room, Lieutenant.
00:30:35That's not the way we do things in Starfleet.
00:30:38I can't believe you're buying everything that Watters is selling.
00:30:41He's not selling anything.
00:30:43He's reminding us of our duty.
00:30:46I feel like I'm having a conversation with one of the bulkheads.
00:30:49You don't understand because you've never put on one of these uniforms.
00:30:54You don't know anything about sacrifice or honor or duty or any other things that make up a soldier's life.
00:31:02I'm part of something larger than myself.
00:31:06All you care about is you.
00:31:08That's right.
00:31:10All I care about is Jake Sisko and whether or not he's going to be killed by a bunch of delusional fanatics looking for martyrdom.
00:31:16Get out.
00:31:20I don't even know who you are anymore.
00:31:22I'm the Chief Engineer of the Starship Valiant.
00:31:27I'll have them put that on your tombstone.
00:31:42Mr. Sisko!
00:31:44I'm afraid you'll have to miss all the fun.
00:31:47You're going to spend the rest of this mission in the brig.
00:32:46FARRIS: All decks report ready, sir.
00:32:49This is the Captain.
00:32:56We are about to engage the enemy.
00:32:59For the last eight months,
00:33:01I've told you to stay focused on one thing-- your duty.
00:33:07But now I want you to step back from your duty and take a look around, and I don't mean look at the walls.
00:33:13I want you to look at this moment in your life.
00:33:15Take it in.
00:33:17Appreciate the fact that you are on this ship with this group of people, at this point in history.
00:33:23But understand one thing above all else.
00:33:27This moment will never come again.
00:33:30Hold on to it.
00:33:31Savor it for as long as you can.
00:33:33You're Starfleet, you're Red Squad, and you're the best.
00:33:40Now... let's get that battleship and we can all go home.
00:33:45Captain out.
00:33:47( com beep )
00:33:48All right then.
00:33:49Good luck.
00:33:53Take us to warp 6, Mr. Nog.
00:33:55Warp six.
00:33:57Aye.
00:34:09They've spotted us.
00:34:11They're dropping out of warp.
00:34:13Helm, go to impulse.
00:34:14Aye, sir.
00:34:15We are in visual range.
00:34:17On screen.
00:34:45Lay in a strafing course along their superstructure and make it close.
00:34:48That way, they won't get a weapons lock on us.
00:34:50I want to scrape some paint off their hull, Lieutenant.
00:34:52Aye, sir.
00:34:53Raise shields, charge phasers, fire at any targets of opportunity as we pass.
00:34:57Aye, sir.
00:34:58Torpedo status? Torpedoes ready, sir.
00:35:00Defense system ready.
00:35:01Helm ready.
00:35:03All right, Mr. Shepard, take us in.
00:35:20Shields holding.
00:35:21Course stable.
00:35:23Fire at will!
00:35:29( yelling )
00:35:32WATTERS: Helm! Hard about!
00:35:34Tactical, get a target lock on those braces!
00:35:43NOG: Impulse engines at full thrust.
00:35:46They're trying to jam our sensors.
00:35:48WATTERS: Mr. Nog, initiate countermeasures.
00:35:50I'm on it!
00:35:51I've acquired the target.
00:35:54Torpedoes locked!
00:35:56Full power to forward shields.
00:35:58Helm, plot an escape course down the z-axis.
00:36:01Ready.
00:36:02Engage.
00:36:08They're turning to port.
00:36:09Match them, Helm.
00:36:10Keep us on track.
00:36:11Aye, sir.
00:36:13Hull breach on Deck Two.
00:36:15Emergency force-fields are in place.
00:36:19FARRIS: Steady our course, Helm.
00:36:20I can't maintain targeting lock.
00:36:35Karen!
00:36:37It's all yours. Fire when ready.
00:36:40Understood.
00:36:42Just a little closer.
00:36:46We're losing our port shields.
00:36:49Steady as she goes.
00:36:57Torpedoes away.
00:37:09Aft view on screen!
00:37:13( cheering )
00:37:27Did we miss the target?
00:37:30No, sir.
00:37:31It was a direct hit.
00:37:34It just...
00:37:35It didn't work.
00:37:41Orders, Captain?
00:37:42Lay in a new course. 127 mark 3--
00:38:12Hull breach on Deck Two.
00:38:14Deck Three, Deck Four...
00:38:16Evasive maneuvers.
00:38:18Bring us about to course 127 mark 320!
00:38:20I've lost helm control!
00:38:21Main power's off-line!
00:38:23I'm rerouting the...
00:38:24( yelling )
00:38:39Auxiliary power's off-line.
00:38:45But I still have phaser control.
00:38:47Shall I return fire?
00:38:58Sir?!
00:39:00No, it's over.
00:39:02The Captain wanted us--
00:39:03The Captain is dead, Chief. They're all dead.
00:39:09The ship is lost.
00:39:11There's no need for us to die here, too.
00:39:12( alarm blaring )
00:39:14COMPUTER: Abandon ship. Abandon ship.
00:39:16This is not a drill.
00:39:17All hands proceed to emergency escape pods.
00:39:20Hey! Somebody let me out of here!
00:39:24Help! Jake, Jake!
00:39:32What happened?
00:39:33We failed.
00:40:10Captain, I'm picking up a Starfleet distress signal.
00:40:13Bearing: 318 mark 005. Range: ten light-years.
00:40:19That location is inside Dominion-held space.
00:40:22Can you identify the ship sending the distress call?
00:40:26Looks like it's coming from an escape pod.
00:40:30USS... Valiant.
00:40:35The Valiant was reported missing over eight months ago.
00:40:38It could be a Dominion ruse to lure us into their territory.
00:40:41Then again, it may be genuine.
00:40:43We have to find out.
00:40:44Cloak the ship and lay in a course.
00:40:46KIRA: Aye, sir.
00:41:00We scanned the area for any other escape pods, but it doesn't look like anyone else made it.
00:41:07It was a long shot. I just thought maybe...
00:41:18( door opens )
00:41:27How is she, Doctor?
00:41:29I've managed to repair her fractured skull and with a little rest, she should be fine.
00:41:33And Nog?
00:41:34Oh, a few bumps and bruises, but he's going to be fine as well.
00:41:39Can I talk to him?
00:41:40I don't see why not.
00:41:54Are you okay?
00:41:56Yeah.
00:42:00You going to write a story about all this?
00:42:05Probably.
00:42:08What are you going to say?
00:42:12What do you think I should say?
00:42:16That it was a good ship... with a good crew... that made a mistake.
00:42:26We... let ourselves blindly follow Captain Watters... and he led us over a cliff.
00:42:38That's not true.
00:42:43Captain Watters was a great man.
00:42:48Dorian... he got everyone killed.
00:42:53If he failed, it's because we failed him.
00:42:59Put that in your story, too.
00:43:02Let people read it and decide for themselves.
00:43:20He may have been a hero... he may even have been a great man... but in the end, he was a bad Captain.
