Devil's Due
00:00:07You don't believe in me.
00:00:10I don't.
00:00:12What evidence would you have of my reality beyond that of your senses?
00:00:18I don't know.
00:00:19Why do you doubt your senses?
00:00:24Because... a little thing affects them.
00:00:28A slight disorder of the stomach makes them cheats.
00:00:31You may be a bit of undigested beef a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese a fragment of an underdone potato.
00:00:40Why, there's more of gravy than of grave about you whatever you are.
00:00:46Humbug, I tell you.
00:00:48Humbug.
00:00:49( screaming )
00:00:51( fearful cry )
00:00:53Freeze program.
00:00:56Very well done, Data.
00:00:59Your performance skills really are improving.
00:01:02Your courtesy is appreciated, sir but I am aware that I do not effectively convey the fear called for in the story.
00:01:09Well, you've never known fear, Data but as an acute observer of behavior you should be able to approximate it.
00:01:16Sir, that is not an appropriate basis for an effective performance.
00:01:21Not by the standards set by my mentors.
00:01:24Your mentors?
00:01:25Yes, sir.
00:01:26I have studied the philosophies of virtually every known acting master.
00:01:30I find myself attracted to Stanislavsky, Adler, Garnav-- proponents of an acting technique known as "The Method."
00:01:41Method acting, huh?
00:01:43I'm vaguely familiar with it but why would you choose such an old-fashioned approach?
00:01:49Perhaps because the technique requires an actor to seek his own emotional awareness to understand the character he plays.
00:01:55But, surely, that's an impossible task for you, Data.
00:01:59Sir, I have modified the method for my own uses.
00:02:03Since I have no emotional awareness to create a performance
00:02:06I am attempting to use performance to create emotional awareness.
00:02:10I believe if I can learn to duplicate the fear of Ebenezer Scrooge
00:02:14I will be one step closer to truly understanding humanity.
00:02:18RIKER: Captain Picard, please report to the Bridge.
00:02:22On my way, Number One.
00:02:24Data, the moment that you decided to stop imitating other actors and create your own interpretation you were already one step closer to understanding humanity.
00:02:43We've received an emergency transmission from the science station on Ventax II, sir.
00:02:47What's the nature of the emergency?
00:02:48Uncertain. The signal was interrupted...
00:02:50Contact reestablished with Ventax II, sir.
00:02:52On screen.
00:02:54I am Dr. Howard Clark, director of the science station here on Ventax II.
00:02:59Thank you for responding.
00:03:01Mr. Worf, can you improve our reception?
00:03:03The trouble is at the transmission source, sir.
00:03:06Dr. Clark, we're barely able to maintain communication with you.
00:03:10Can you boost the level of your power source?
00:03:12I'm afraid not, Captain. It's under attack.
00:03:16Under attack?
00:03:17There's a mob outside the door trying to break into the station.
00:03:20The planet is in chaos-- lootings, fires mass hysteria.
00:03:25These people are all convinced that their world is coming to an end tomorrow.
00:03:30Please, we must have your immediate...
00:04:06Space, the final frontier.
00:04:11These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:04:15Its continuing mission--
00:04:17to explore strange new worlds
00:04:21to seek out new life and new civilizations
00:04:25to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:05:28Captain's Log, Stardate 44474.5.
00:05:31We have reached Ventax II
00:05:33and are attempting to contact the Federation science station
00:05:36which at last report was under siege by an angry mob.
00:05:40They are transmitting again.
00:05:42On screen, before we lose contact.
00:05:45Enterprise.
00:05:46Enterprise, do you read me?!
00:05:47Emergency! We need help.
00:05:49Dr. Clark, this is Captain Picard.
00:05:51We are ready to beam you and your team on board...
00:05:53( explosion )
00:05:54They're in! They're in!
00:05:56Transporter Room Three lock onto the science team, beam them aboard.
00:05:59I've locked onto Dr. Clark.
00:06:00I can't pick out the others.
00:06:02It's a mess down there.
00:06:04Then beam Dr. Clark aboard by himself.
00:06:06Yes, Captain.
00:06:07Mr. Worf, will you escort him to my ready room.
00:06:09Aye, sir.
00:06:10Number One, try and make some sense out of this mess.
00:06:23The people in Ventax II live in an agrarian society.
00:06:27At least, they do now.
00:06:29What do you mean "now"?
00:06:31It's an interesting anthropological question one we were studying before the... trouble began.
00:06:40In the distant past the Ventaxian culture had achieved an extremely, um, advanced scientific level but a millennium ago they turned their backs on technology.
00:06:53They reverted to a simpler existence.
00:06:55And remained that way for centuries.
00:06:58First contact was made by a Klingon expedition
00:07:0170 years ago.
00:07:03Since then, the new technology's been available to the Ventaxians.
00:07:06They simply are not interested in it.
00:07:09Virtually no social problems can be found on this planet.
00:07:13In fact, I would have described their society as idyllic, until...
00:07:17Until what, Doctor?
00:07:19It's hard to believe.
00:07:22Several years ago, Acost Jared, the Ventaxian head of state began to grow increasingly obsessed with the legend of Ardra.
00:07:33With each passing day, he grew more anxious and he'd talk about little else.
00:07:37"Ardra is coming back.
00:07:39"Ardra will be here soon.
00:07:42"We must all leave before Ardra returns."
00:07:45And who is this Ardra?
00:07:50For all intents and purposes... the devil.
00:07:56Captain, these people actually believe they've sold their souls to the devil.
00:08:02Riker to Captain Picard.
00:08:04Have you located the science team, Number One?
00:08:06Evidently, they're being held hostage.
00:08:08Hostage?
00:08:09There's a Ventaxian leader on the viewscreen, name of Acost Jared.
00:08:14Doctor.
00:08:24Jared, you must secure the release of my people.
00:08:27I can't believe you would allow this.
00:08:29Howard, my friend, you know how I abhor all acts of violence but events are out of my control.
00:08:35I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
00:08:36Is there nothing you can do?
00:08:38As the hour of Ardra's return approaches, fear has overwhelmed my people.
00:08:43It has been a thousand years!
00:08:45The prophecies have come true.
00:08:47Prophecies?
00:08:48Ardra's arrival was supposed to be heralded with the shaking of the cities.
00:08:52Now, there has been a series of geological tremors on the planet-- minor quakes.
00:08:57Nothing extraordinary.
00:08:59But poorly timed.
00:09:00There is more.
00:09:01For several nights, there have been visions of Ardra.
00:09:04Again, just as the contract said would occur before her return.
00:09:08Visions? You mean dreams.
00:09:10No. She has appeared.
00:09:11I, myself, have seen her.
00:09:13Jared, tell your people, if the hostages are released
00:09:17I am prepared to offer Federation assistance should this... this Ardra return.
00:09:23I'm afraid it will not matter.
00:09:25They know your weapons are useless against her, Captain.
00:09:29I will make inquiries concerning the hostages.
00:09:32The innocent should not suffer for our sins but I can make no promises.
00:09:40This situation is deteriorating, Captain.
00:09:43The people are reaching levels of anxiety that could lead to suicide.
00:09:47Mr. Data, what do we know about this Ardra?
00:09:49She is a cornerstone of Ventaxian theology.
00:09:53It seems Ardra came to Ventax II and promised 1,000 years of peace and prosperity for a price-- upon her return she would enslave the entire population.
00:10:04In Ventaxian culture, it is considered bad luck to speak her name out loud.
00:10:08CLARK: There are ancient scrolls concerning Ardra that are stored in the Atheneum Vaults.
00:10:13Scholars study them.
00:10:14They've been of little public interest until recently.
00:10:18I think I should meet with this Acost Jared.
00:10:20He's still our best hope for a release of the hostages.
00:10:23I'll arrange to have him transported on board.
00:10:25No, I'm going down to the planet myself.
00:10:27Sir, you'd run the risk of being taken as an additional hostage.
00:10:31Mr. Worf, you and Mr. Data will accompany me.
00:10:34Mr. O'Brien can keep a lock on our communicators.
00:10:37He can pull us out if necessary.
00:10:39Yes, sir.
00:10:40PICARD: Counselor, I want you to come, too.
00:10:44( screams and distant explosions )
00:10:59Captain Picard, you shouldn't have come.
00:11:01Your life is in danger here.
00:11:03You must calm your people.
00:11:04There is no reason for panic.
00:11:06No reason?
00:11:07If these tremors have frightened them leading to this hysteria over Ardra let us reassure them.
00:11:12We have scanned the tectonic stress patterns of your planet's crust.
00:11:16There is no evidence that the quakes pose any kind of threat.
00:11:19No, no, no. The threat is from Ardra.
00:11:22You cannot understand.
00:11:24If you can at least help us to locate our people.
00:11:27( rumbling )
00:11:33She is here.
00:11:35Nonsense. It is only...
00:11:45Time's up.
00:11:52( people screaming )
00:11:57I'm disappointed.
00:11:59I expected my tenants to take better care of my property.
00:12:02Ardra, most powerful one
00:12:05I am Jared, leader of Ventax II.
00:12:07I take responsibility for all that displeases you.
00:12:10Please, do not punish my people.
00:12:12Punish? Who said anything about punishing?
00:12:15I merely expect your end of our contract to be upheld.
00:12:19Thank you, Ardra.
00:12:20And don't talk like some ancient prophet around me with "thees" and "thous" and "most powerful ones."
00:12:26It was appealing for a few centuries but I bore easily.
00:12:30And stop cowering.
00:12:31When I want you on your knees, I'll let you know.
00:12:36Much better.
00:12:37A fine example for the others.
00:12:40Who would you be?
00:12:41I'm Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship Enterprise.
00:12:45Keep up the good work.
00:12:49Now, the first thing we'll need is an accounting of all you've been accumulating for me.
00:12:54This form will provide guidelines for a full census of the population with emphasis on productivity and economic forecasts.
00:13:03Who are you?
00:13:05My, you are forceful, aren't you?
00:13:07Good. I like my men to be forceful at least, at the start.
00:13:11If your intention is to intimidate you're not succeeding.
00:13:14That's all right.
00:13:15I like a challenge.
00:13:16TROI: An entire planet has been terrorized because of the suggestion that you're going to enslave the population.
00:13:22Well, it's true.
00:13:24Of course, I wouldn't put it so melodramatically.
00:13:27It's just a standard contract with an unusually long term.
00:13:31So you do purport to be the mythic figure Ardra?
00:13:34I have many names, my pale friend.
00:13:37I am Mendora in the Berussian Cluster.
00:13:41Torak to the Drellians.
00:13:43The Klingons call me Fek'lhr.
00:13:47You are not Fek'lhr.
00:13:51Ah, but I am.
00:13:53I am the Guardian of Gre'thor where the dishonored go when they die.
00:14:02But here on Ventax II, I am called Ardra.
00:14:06The same Ardra who negotiated a contract with these people ten centuries ago today.
00:14:12Oh, you doubt me.
00:14:14A non-believer.
00:14:16Really, Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship Enterprise no doubt you have traveled the galaxy encountered a diverse universe of creatures.
00:14:25Is there no room for the likes of me?
00:14:28I've encountered many who are more credibly to be called the devil than you.
00:14:32The devil.
00:14:34Now there's one I haven't heard in a long time.
00:14:38You claim you visited this planet 1,000 years ago and negotiated a contract?
00:14:43That's correct.
00:14:45I would like to see that contract.
00:14:56The scrolls of Ardra, Captain.
00:14:58A long-winded description of a very simple business arrangement.
00:15:02I did away with their wars, famine and economic ruin and provided them 1,000 years of paradise.
00:15:09My terms were clearly stated.
00:15:11They went into this with their eyes open.
00:15:15I'm sure you'll find everything is in order.
00:15:18You won't mind if I don't take your word for it.
00:15:21Jared, with your permission
00:15:22I'd like Mr. Data to review these scrolls thoroughly.
00:15:26It is no longer my decision, Captain.
00:15:32I have intrigued you, haven't I, Picard?
00:15:36I am only here to secure the release of the Federation hostages.
00:15:40Hostages?
00:15:42Is this true?
00:15:43Uh... yes, Ardra.
00:15:45Panic gripped the people as the time of your return grew closer.
00:15:49Yes, I do have that effect on people.
00:15:52See that the hostages are released-- now!
00:15:55Immediately.
00:15:58Let us not cloud this with bit players, Picard.
00:16:01You will not leave because you find me irresistible.
00:16:10Enterprise, advise Dr. Clark that the hostages are being released.
00:16:13This is Clark.
00:16:14You did it, Captain.
00:16:15Thank goodness.
00:16:17Goodness had nothing to do with it.
00:16:19Three to beam up.
00:16:20Mr. Data will remain on the planet's surface.
00:16:22Data, I want a complete report on the contents of these documents.
00:16:28I refuse to abandon this planet to that woman.
00:16:32Energize.
00:16:42Could she be another refugee from the Q Continuum?
00:16:46For that matter, could she be Q?
00:16:48Q would never bother with contracts.
00:16:50Or economic forecasts.
00:16:52I noticed that, too, Counselor.
00:16:54I had the distinct impression of being in the presence of a... a flimflam artist.
00:16:59WORF: But her powers?
00:17:01Her powers are, at the best, unclear.
00:17:04Think about it, Mr. Worf.
00:17:06Transporter technology can make things appear and disappear.
00:17:09The illusion that she can transform herself into a Klingon creature could be created by holographic projection.
00:17:16CLARK: And creating a minor tremor could be the result of a low-frequency tractor beam projected against the tectonic plates.
00:17:24We are capable of recreating all of these events.
00:17:27It's just that she dresses them up and she delivers them with more dramatic flair.
00:17:32Like a magician.
00:17:35Exactly.
00:17:36TROI: She has an incredibly focused mind.
00:17:38It was virtually impossible to sense any deception.
00:17:42Or anything else, for that matter.
00:17:43The best magicians will never let you see what's up their sleeve, Counselor.
00:17:47She must be tapping into some sort of power source to produce those effects.
00:17:50She's not hiding that up her sleeve.
00:17:51Number One, I want you and Mr. Worf to run high-resolution scans of this star system.
00:17:55Look for a ship, a base of operations anything large enough to generate that power.
00:18:01Mr. La Forge, accompany Dr. Clark back to the science station.
00:18:04See if you can trace the origin of these tremors.
00:18:16Your chair offers a lovely view of my planet, Picard.
00:18:20Come, sit with me.
00:18:22Either leave my Bridge or I will remove you by force.
00:18:27By force?
00:18:28( laughing )
00:18:30You disappoint me.
00:18:32You didn't strike me as that sort, Picard.
00:18:35But, by all means, try.
00:18:39Mr. Worf?
00:18:59I was really hoping you'd try it yourself.
00:19:03Transporter Room Three, lock onto the intruder and transport her to the planet's surface.
00:19:08Aye, sir.
00:19:15Ensign, put up the shields until further notice.
00:19:18Yes, sir, Captain, whatever you say.
00:19:20We are not impressed with your magic tricks.
00:19:23I pity you.
00:19:25We live in a universe of magic which, evidently, you cannot see.
00:19:30( door opening )
00:19:32Ah, my pale friend has returned.
00:19:34Have you finished examining the contract?
00:19:36I have, sir.
00:19:37Report, Mr. Data.
00:19:39The contract agrees to deliver the people of Ventax II into the personal servitude of Ardra after 1,000 years of peace.
00:19:46I have compared the terms to the body of laws which govern the planet.
00:19:50The language of the agreement is correct in every detail, sir.
00:19:53Such speed and accuracy.
00:19:55You're much too talented to be human.
00:19:58I am an android.
00:19:59Android? Of course.
00:20:02How wonderful-- an unexpected bonus.
00:20:06Bonus?
00:20:07Yes.
00:20:08When the contract came to term
00:20:10I gained clear title to the planet-- anything on the surface, in the air, or... in orbit.
00:20:18So, you see, the Enterprise belongs to me now as well.
00:20:23( chuckles )
00:20:26I am afraid the contract could be interpreted in that way, sir.
00:20:42Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:20:43Although I consider this woman's claim upon my ship
00:20:46to be an empty threat, it has further inspired
00:20:49my determination to expose her for the fraud she is.
00:20:54( door chimes )
00:20:56Come.
00:20:59You wish to see me, sir?
00:21:02Yes, Mr. Data.
00:21:07A wise man once said
00:21:09"There is a sucker born every minute."
00:21:13Barnum, sir. P.T.
00:21:16I've been examining the dynamics of what used to be called
00:21:21"the con game."
00:21:23Quite fascinating-- worthy of your study, Data.
00:21:26Sir, do you believe Ardra is-- to use the vernacular-- a con artist?
00:21:33Yes, I do, Data.
00:21:35And I believe it is our job to out-con the con artist.
00:21:42Sir, I must point out that the Ventaxians did have 1,000 years of peace and tranquility as promised by Ardra.
00:21:50We can only speculate what happened on that planet 1,000 years ago.
00:21:54Maybe a Ventaxian leader saw the destruction of his society at hand and he conceived this "contract of Ardra" to motivate change.
00:22:03Or maybe there was an Ardra of some sort who was the basis for this mythology.
00:22:07Who knows?
00:22:08The point is... that somehow a fundamental theology was created which transformed this society but in the process of change created this latent fear which has been passed down through generations.
00:22:24Data, from your own experience of performing Ebenezer Scrooge you're aware how fear can be a very powerful motivator.
00:22:32Indeed, sir.
00:22:34In the story, the spirits used fear to motivate Scrooge to reform his character.
00:22:39And in the hands of a con artist fear can be used to motivate obedience, capitulation the exploitation of innocent people and that is what I believe has happened here and I intend to prove that.
00:22:54I need to find a loophole-- some way of challenging the validity of this contract.
00:23:00Sir, the language of the contract seems carefully chosen to avoid any loopholes.
00:23:05Check it again, Mr. Data and check every Ventaxian legal precedent for the last 1,000 years.
00:23:10We'll talk again in the morning.
00:23:11Aye, sir.
00:23:33( wind whistling )
00:23:44Picard to Bridge.
00:23:45Intruder alert.
00:23:47Picard to Bridge.
00:23:48Oh, I've arranged for a bit of privacy.
00:24:00( buzzing )
00:24:08Just the two of us.
00:24:10( seductive laughter )
00:24:12This is becoming very tiresome.
00:24:14Oh, come now, Picard.
00:24:16You know you find me tantalizing.
00:24:21Give in to your desires.
00:24:25You know, there's nothing about you I find tantalizing.
00:24:29On the contrary I find you obvious and vulgar.
00:24:34Easily fixed.
00:24:37I can be your ideal woman, Picard-- prim and proper and chaste until I succumb to your charms.
00:24:47Or would your fantasies turn more toward a professional woman?
00:24:50One, perhaps, who wears a Starfleet uniform?
00:24:53Perhaps I could even be...
00:24:55...someone close at hand, yet unattainable.
00:25:02I can do anything for you, Captain...
00:25:07Anything you could ever imagine.
00:25:11I could give you a night that would light fire in your dreams until you die and you would reject me?
00:25:18Oh, yes.
00:25:20You shall regret that.
00:25:22I think not.
00:25:23Oh, but you will.
00:25:28Captain Picard.
00:25:30Captain, I-I wasn't expecting you here.
00:25:33Neither was I.
00:25:35La Forge to Enterprise.
00:25:37Go ahead.
00:25:38Worf, Captain Picard is here.
00:25:40You'd better transport him back on board.
00:25:42The Captain? But I have no...
00:25:44PICARD: It's all right, Mr. Worf.
00:25:46Ardra somehow transported me here.
00:25:48Will you beam me directly to my quarters?
00:25:50Aye, sir.
00:25:52We're locked onto you.
00:25:55Transporter is malfunctioning, Captain.
00:25:57Some sort of interference.
00:25:59Checking.
00:26:00Just have Mr. Data fetch me in a shuttle and have him bring along a uniform.
00:26:05Did you say "uniform"?
00:26:07Yes, I did.
00:26:10Aye, sir.
00:26:17Mr. La Forge and Dr. Clark have made no headway.
00:26:20Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf have picked nothing up on their scans.
00:26:24Sir, I believe I have found an obscure precedent in Ventaxian law which may be of interest.
00:26:29Yes?
00:26:30The case involves a contract dispute over services rendered by a Klingon craftsman on the construction of a Ventaxian home.
00:26:38Because the dispute involved an alien culture the parties decided that arbitration rather than the courts, should resolve the issue.
00:26:46Both parties agreed to chose an arbitrator.
00:26:49It is the only known case involving an alien claimant.
00:26:54That's exactly what I needed.
00:26:55Well done, Data.
00:27:00Shuttlecraft One to Enterprise.
00:27:02Prepare for docking sequence.
00:27:04RIKER: Proceed, Shuttle One.
00:27:07( consoles beeping )
00:27:10Enterprise?
00:27:13Enterprise, do you read me?
00:27:16Enterprise, come in.
00:27:29I cannot locate the Enterprise anywhere within one light-year of the planet, sir.
00:27:33I don't believe Ardra is capable of transporting the Enterprise a light-year away.
00:27:37Keep hailing them, Mr. Data.
00:27:39Repeat on all frequencies.
00:27:40Hey, I think we found something here.
00:27:46There's a sudden jump in Z-particle readings just about the time the Enterprise disappeared.
00:27:50Where did it originate?
00:27:51It was too brief to pinpoint.
00:27:53But it could suggest a hidden power source.
00:27:55Gentlemen, we need to find that source if we are to defeat this woman.
00:27:59Well, if you can get her to perform a few more magic tricks like that one we just might be able to track it down.
00:28:06So, I trust you have a bit more respect for me now.
00:28:09What have you done with my ship?
00:28:10I've done nothing with your ship.
00:28:13My ship is safely in my possession.
00:28:15I do not recognize your claim on the Enterprise nor on this world for that matter and in accordance with Ventaxian legal precedent
00:28:26I call for an arbitration.
00:28:27An arbitration?
00:28:29There's nothing here to arbitrate.
00:28:30PICARD: Oh, but there is.
00:28:32You're a fraud, madam, and I intend to prove that you could not have effected the changes that took place on this planet.
00:28:37Do you not believe what you see with your own eyes?
00:28:40Your ship is gone, Captain.
00:28:42An illusion.
00:28:43Magicians have been making things of all sort disappear for ages.
00:28:46Oh, you underestimate me but then, most people do, until it's too late.
00:28:51But if you are who you say you are then you have nothing to lose.
00:28:55I also have nothing to gain.
00:28:57I already have possession of this planet and your ship.
00:29:01I am prepared to offer an added incentive.
00:29:06If you win...
00:29:09I'll take you to the ruins of Ligillium.
00:29:12The Zaterl emerald?
00:29:14You know where it is?
00:29:16Yes, I do.
00:29:19Oh...
00:29:22You are too clever, Captain but I have enough jewels.
00:29:27If you wish this foolish arbitration
00:29:31I will choose my own prize.
00:29:34And what would that be?
00:29:41You.
00:29:43By all rights, your body is already mine but I want more.
00:29:48I want your heart, your mind, your soul and I want you to give them to me without resistance of your own free will.
00:29:56So, do you still wish to pursue this most dangerous game?
00:30:05I agree to your terms.
00:30:07Oh, Picard, I will enjoy you morning, noon and night.
00:30:12But... we must agree to an arbitrator.
00:30:17Very well.
00:30:21I choose Mr. Data.
00:30:24Any objections?
00:30:26But Mr. Data is a member of my crew.
00:30:27Of my crew and he's an android.
00:30:31He is incapable of deceit or bias.
00:30:35He has no feelings to get in the way of his judgment.
00:30:39Ardra, before he responds may I have a word in private with Captain Picard?
00:30:54Sir, I request you reject me as an arbitrator.
00:30:57Why?
00:30:59Ardra is right.
00:31:00If I am chosen, I will perform my duties without bias or sentiment.
00:31:04I cannot guarantee
00:31:05I will deliver a verdict in your favor.
00:31:09Data, where else on this planet can I find someone she cannot intimidate?
00:31:14Sir, I will have to follow the rules of conduct for a Ventaxian jurist.
00:31:19I understand.
00:31:21You'll make a fine judge.
00:31:261,000 years ago, our planet was dying.
00:31:29Overcrowded and dangerous city-states warred unceasingly with each other.
00:31:33The air and water were polluted with industrial waste and there was a constant threat of starvation and epidemic.
00:31:39Then what happened?
00:31:41And then... you came.
00:31:43Objection.
00:31:44There is no conclusive evidence that this woman ever visited this planet 1,000 years ago.
00:31:49And I suppose you want a thousand-year-old witness?
00:31:52That would be acceptable.
00:31:55Jared, in the contract does it specify how you would know me when I return?
00:32:00Yes, by the date.
00:32:03Anything else?
00:32:04By the shaking of the cities and by the visions.
00:32:09And all of these occurred on schedule?
00:32:11Yes.
00:32:12Thank you.
00:32:15Your Honor, I submit that I have established my identity as stated by the contract.
00:32:22Captain Picard my interpretation of Ventaxian law suggests that, under these circumstances this is acceptable.
00:32:31Your objection is overruled.
00:32:34But, Your Honor...
00:32:35Sir
00:32:36I have ruled.
00:32:38Please sit down.
00:32:45You may proceed.
00:32:46Thank you, Your Honor.
00:32:49Now, when I first set foot on Ventax II what did I offer your people?
00:32:54According to the scrolls you offered us 1,000 years of peace and prosperity if we would promise to surrender ourselves to you at the end of the term.
00:33:02And why do you think they would strike such a bargain?
00:33:05We had nothing to lose.
00:33:06There was no hope in sight.
00:33:08Until I came along.
00:33:10Objection!
00:33:11I withdraw the observation.
00:33:14No further questions.
00:33:19Your Honor, nothing in this testament proves that Ardra had the power to affect the lives of the Ventaxians.
00:33:25My opponent has failed to prove her case and I move that her claim be summarily dismissed.
00:33:31I find no cause to invalidate the contract at this time.
00:33:35The arbitration will continue.
00:33:37Your Honor, Captain Picard, as a new visitor to my planet has been a consistent doubter of my abilities.
00:33:45I would like to ask him a few questions, if I may.
00:33:48DATA: It is highly irregular to question the opposing advocate but I see no reason to deny it.
00:33:54Proceed.
00:33:56Please do not take any offense to these questions, Captain.
00:33:58You know how fond I am of you.
00:34:00Objection.
00:34:02Sustained.
00:34:03The advocate will refrain from expressing personal affections for her opponent.
00:34:10You do not believe my powers are real, do you?
00:34:13No, I don't.
00:34:15Then, sir, may I ask you to explain this?
00:34:19( rumbling )
00:34:25You are out of order.
00:34:27Or this?
00:34:33The advocate will refrain from making her opponent disappear.
00:34:38Or this?
00:34:41( growls )
00:34:43Can you explain it, Picard?
00:34:47Any more disruptions and I will rule you in contempt of court.
00:34:51Is that understood?
00:34:54I am sorry, Your Honor but can you explain it, Picard?
00:35:00Yes or no?
00:35:04No.
00:35:07I rest my case, Your Honor.
00:35:14( chuckles )
00:35:23The decay rate of these Z-particles make it almost impossible to trace the source.
00:35:28I'm correlating the particle trajectories.
00:35:30They're beginning to align.
00:35:33Wait a minute.
00:35:35( chuckling )
00:35:37I have coordinates.
00:35:3834 degrees north, 62 degrees east, at an altitude of 210 kilometers.
00:35:46That would put it in orbit, uh, above the Western magnetic pole.
00:35:50Running visual scan.
00:35:55Nothing.
00:35:57Uh-uh. This time, I don't buy the magic.
00:36:00Something's got to be there.
00:36:04Jared, you've described quite thoroughly the history of your people before and after Ardra's first visit but I am a little unclear about the change itself.
00:36:15Did Ardra simply... snap her fingers and transform the planet into this paradise?
00:36:23No. The changes occurred gradually over a long period of time.
00:36:27Did she personally form the government that so peacefully ruled this planet for a millennium?
00:36:32No.
00:36:34Historical records indicate a council was convened to assess our options.
00:36:39They drew up a new constitution which the population later ratified.
00:36:43I see. So she advised this council?
00:36:47No.
00:36:49No?
00:36:51Then she must have destroyed all the weapons on the planet.
00:36:54No, our leaders did that and they signed a treaty of non-aggression.
00:37:03Well, then, let's move on to the environmental gains on Ventax II.
00:37:08How were they accomplished?
00:37:10We shifted our economy from an industrial to an agrarian base.
00:37:15It was more ecologically sound.
00:37:18But Ardra must have purified the polluted water and air.
00:37:22No, the record shows there were a series of initiatives covering everything from atmospheric contaminants to... waste disposal.
00:37:32Did she not even pick up one piece of trash?
00:37:36Ardra had left Ventax II before the environmental reforms began.
00:37:41Forgive me, but it sounds as if... with a lot of courage and hard work your ancestors changed this world all by themselves.
00:37:55Objection. The advocate is drawing conclusions.
00:38:00Sustained. I will draw my own conclusions if you do not mind... sir.
00:38:06No further questions.
00:38:12Rebuttal?
00:38:14Just two questions.
00:38:16Is there any doubt in your mind any doubt at all-- that if I had not intervened the terrible conditions here would have continued?
00:38:27I remind you that you're under oath.
00:38:32No doubt at all.
00:38:34Then, as former head of state for the Ventaxian people you are satisfied that I fulfilled my part of the bargain?
00:38:43Yes, Ardra.
00:38:45Thank you.
00:38:47Your Honor, what more can be said?
00:38:48Both sides agree the terms of the contract have been fulfilled.
00:38:52Captain Picard, do you have any further evidence to present before I render judgment? ( door closes )
00:39:00I believe my associate, Mr. La Forge may be bringing the answer to that question.
00:39:04I request a recess.
00:39:06Hi, Data.
00:39:07Geordi.
00:39:09One hour recess is granted.
00:39:11( bangs gavel )
00:39:19( door closes )
00:39:21Mr. La Forge, my reputation as a litigator-- not to mention my immortal soul-- is in serious jeopardy.
00:39:27Well, whatever's been going on over here gave us exactly what we needed.
00:39:31Have you identified the source of her power?
00:39:33A cloaked ship.
00:39:35She has a Romulan cloaking device?
00:39:37More likely a bad copy of one.
00:39:39We picked it up on a wavelength stretchout.
00:39:41And the Enterprise?
00:39:42Exactly where it's supposed to be.
00:39:44Ardra extended her cloaking shields around it-- set up a subspace damping field to interfere with normal operations.
00:39:49I've isolated the frequency spread and penetrated the field.
00:39:52Can you make contact?
00:39:53Already have.
00:39:56This is what I want to do but we have less than an hour...
00:40:06Jared, you are a wise and experienced leader and I assume that you trust your senses.
00:40:11Yes, I would say so.
00:40:13And all your senses tell you that this woman here is the most powerful force on this planet, don't they?
00:40:19Yes.
00:40:20And what would you say if I were to tell you that she has no powers whatsoever?
00:40:27But we have seen her powers here.
00:40:29ARDRA: That's right and you will again.
00:40:32Oh, yes-- Ardra's magic.
00:40:36Jared, would you believe me if I told you that I could steal her powers and perform the same magic acts as she does?
00:40:45I'm sorry, Captain Picard, but you are not Ardra.
00:40:49No, that's true.
00:40:52I'm not Ardra but I can create tremors just as she did.
00:40:58( rumbling )
00:41:01Objection, Your Honor.
00:41:04I think he deserves some leeway.
00:41:06Overruled.
00:41:07But that will be quite enough, Captain.
00:41:09Of course.
00:41:11Ardra, will you do the honors and stop the tremors?
00:41:14Uh... of course.
00:41:19Is something the matter?
00:41:21I like the tremors.
00:41:22Well, I don't.
00:41:25PICARD: Do you recognize the same old bag of tricks?
00:41:30What about this one?
00:41:33Come back, Ardra, if you can.
00:41:35No?
00:41:37Fine. Allow me.
00:41:42Of all the impudence.
00:41:44Impudence?
00:41:46Impudence is pretending to be Fek'lhr of Klingon.
00:41:52Your leeway has run out, Captain.
00:41:54( roaring )
00:41:57Your Honor
00:41:58I appreciate your indulgence.
00:41:59Allow me to explain.
00:42:01A team from the Enterprise has taken control of... this woman's ship now in orbit around Ventax II.
00:42:10Thank you for your help, Number One.
00:42:12RIKER: Glad to be of service, sir.
00:42:14They have been monitoring me on my communicator.
00:42:16Executing a prearranged program on her ship's computer-- a fairly ingenious combination of force field projection holography and transporter effects.
00:42:27Ardra controls her "magic" literally by the blink of an eye-- centuries-old technology.
00:42:35An implant which permits the movements of her eye to choose and activate each illusion.
00:42:42Ardra once told us that she is known by many names.
00:42:45Well, at least in that, she was being honest.
00:42:48Her crew have admitted that she is known by 23 aliases in this sector alone.
00:42:53You had no right.
00:42:55Deceiving innocent people with her petty schemes for years.
00:42:59Ventax II must have offered her the greatest opportunity of her nefarious career.
00:43:04She learned of the myth of Ardra, studied it and so expertly played on your fears that your people were ready to virtually surrender to her.
00:43:17Your Honor, under the circumstances
00:43:21I believe it is only fair that I release the Ventaxians from their obligation and I will let them keep the peace they have and I will just be on my way.
00:43:41With the advocate's withdrawal the contract is hereby dissolved.
00:43:45This arbitration is adjourned.
00:43:48( bangs gavel )
00:43:49Thank you, Captain Picard.
00:43:51You saved our lives.
00:43:52No, Jared, as I've tried to tell you you saved your own lives a long time ago.
00:44:02Congratulations, sir.
00:44:05Your Honor.
00:44:06( tsking )
00:44:09You would have had a lot more fun if you'd lost.
00:44:12Till we meet again, Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise.
00:44:20( laughing )
