In Theory
00:00:03Captain's Log, Stardate 44932.3:
00:00:06The Enterprise is preparing to enter the Mar Oscura,
00:00:09an unexplored dark matter nebula.
00:00:12Commander Data is modifying several of our photon torpedoes
00:00:16for an experiment designed to elicit more information
00:00:19about this unusual phenomenon.
00:00:31The initial dispersal pattern should not be more than seven kilometers in diameter.
00:00:38Jenna?
00:00:39Oh. Uh, 6.8 kilometers.
00:00:43That should suffice.
00:00:45Is there something occupying your thoughts, Jenna?
00:00:48You seem somewhat subdued today.
00:00:50I bumped into Jeff again in the turbolift this morning.
00:00:54He asked me out to dinner.
00:00:56What was your response?
00:00:58I told him I'd think about it.
00:01:02As you requested, I will now remind you of the reasons you decided to end your relationship with Jeff.
00:01:08I guess I asked for this. Go ahead.
00:01:10You objected to the fact that he seemed unwilling to set aside sufficient time for you.
00:01:15You said he was unresponsive, that he never did the little things.
00:01:18You disliked the sound he made when he ate his soup.
00:01:21Okay, okay. I remember.
00:01:32This is the third time I have refreshed your memory.
00:01:35Do you wish to rescind our agreement?
00:01:38No. No, it's for my own good.
00:01:40It's just so easy to forget.
00:01:42Hand me the sequencer.
00:01:46Throughout history, many lovers have suffered the same difficulty.
00:01:50Anne Boleyn was quite distressed that Henry the VIII preferred the company of his huntsmen over that of his wife.
00:01:54Since when did you develop an interest in romantic historical figures?
00:01:59Six weeks ago, when you and Jeff dissolved your relationship,
00:02:03I saw an excellent opportunity to study that aspect of human intimacy.
00:02:06As your friend, it is my responsibility to be supportive in times of need.
00:02:14That's, uh... that's very sweet, Data.
00:02:21Data to Bridge.
00:02:23We are ready to begin the first illumination test.
00:02:25Acknowledged.
00:02:26All science stations stand by.
00:02:28We're about to light up the nebula. Mr. Worf?
00:02:30Launch Bay One shows ready, Commander.
00:02:33Fire torpedo.
00:02:44Jenna: It's beautiful.
00:02:48Like watching fireworks when I was a little girl.
00:03:22Space... the final frontier.
00:03:26These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
00:03:30Its continuing mission--
00:03:32to explore strange new worlds,
00:03:36to seek out new life and new civilizations,
00:03:40to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:04:43( playing Reicha's "Woodwind Quintet in E-flat major" )
00:05:33That was wonderful. Really?
00:05:37Really. Wonderful.
00:05:39Thanks.
00:05:45Is something wrong?
00:05:47My tempo was way off.
00:05:50I felt like I was rushing through the whole piece.
00:05:53I do not believe that is so.
00:05:54Your rhythmic control has improved markedly.
00:05:57I heard no fluctuations during the performance.
00:06:00Well, maybe, but I ruined the coda.
00:06:02I got confused with the phrasing again.
00:06:05I kept breathing at the wrong times.
00:06:07The contrapuntal nature of the composition is most demanding.
00:06:11We will give more attention to the rhythmic patterns during our next rehearsal.
00:06:15However, I am quite certain the audience was oblivious to such nuances.
00:06:19They seemed to enjoy the performance thoroughly.
00:06:22Thank you, Data.
00:06:25You're very generous.
00:06:28KEIKO: Every night, Miles leaves his socks on the floor.
00:06:32When we got married,
00:06:33I made the mistake of picking them up a few times.
00:06:37Then I realized, if I kept it up,
00:06:39I'd be doing it for the rest of my life.
00:06:42So I stopped, figuring he'd get the point and do it himself.
00:06:47One night goes by... two... a week... ten days.
00:06:54By now there's a pile of socks half a meter high.
00:06:57Oh, come on, it wasn't half a meter.
00:06:59After two weeks, I couldn't stand it anymore.
00:07:00I bundled them up and put them in the cleaning processor.
00:07:03And I'm still doing it.
00:07:05And a very good job she does of it, too.
00:07:08Keiko, you sound just like Data.
00:07:11He came over to my quarters the other day to give me a music lesson and he said the funniest thing.
00:07:15How did you put it?
00:07:17About the mess?
00:07:20I believe I observed that you seem to have an aversion to orderliness.
00:07:26But it was not intended as a humorous remark.
00:07:29So, before we started, he gallantly offered to help me straighten up.
00:07:35And a very good job I did of it, too.
00:07:49Report, Mr. Data.
00:07:51I have nearly finished compiling readings of our most recent illuminatory burst.
00:07:55Dark matter density is nearly one order of magnitude higher than in similar nebulae.
00:08:01Life-forms may have developed in ways never before observed.
00:08:04Interesting hypothesis.
00:08:07Are there any M Class planets we can check out? Several, sir.
00:08:09The nearest is approximately three light-hours from our present position.
00:08:13It's worth a look.
00:08:15We'll continue our survey along the way.
00:08:26Let's increase the flow rate and see if that helps.
00:08:37( metallic clink )
00:08:48Sometimes in the summer, we'd go on cookouts-- just my little brother and me and my mother.
00:08:54She was hopeless without a replicator, we didn't care.
00:08:59Children often do not develop discerning palettes until well beyond adolescence.
00:09:04It wasn't that.
00:09:05It's just that we felt so good being together, you know, as a family.
00:09:09We didn't have much of that after my father died, so those times were really special.
00:09:18I wish we were back there now, you and I.
00:09:20The unidirectional nature of the time continuum makes that an unlikely possibility.
00:09:27That's what I love about you, Data, you make me laugh.
00:09:31I don't know why I keep falling for the wrong men.
00:09:34Why can't I fall for somebody like you?
00:09:36You're perfect. That is not true.
00:09:38I have no human feelings.
00:09:40But you give me so much.
00:09:45You spend time with me when I'm lonely.
00:09:48You encourage me when I'm down.
00:09:50No man has ever been kinder to me.
00:09:54Those are the things that matter.
00:10:02I better be going.
00:10:06With your permission, Commander.
00:10:08Permission granted.
00:10:21I don't know if you're aware of this, but you're very handsome.
00:10:43I'll see you tomorrow.
00:11:02Hello, Data.
00:11:05Would you like to try something new?
00:11:07It's a concoction I heard about on Prakal II.
00:11:11I think it's wonderful, but I need a second opinion.
00:11:2087% Saurian brandy.
00:11:24Targ milk and Denevian mead comprise the rest.
00:11:27There is an unusually high concentration of fructose compound and monosaccharides.
00:11:31Too sweet?
00:11:39Data, if I didn't know you better,
00:11:42I would say you were a little... preoccupied.
00:11:45Lieutenant D'Sora just gave me what could be considered a very passionate kiss in the Torpedo Bay.
00:11:53Really?
00:12:04And...
00:12:05I was intrigued.
00:12:09Jenna seemed to be displaying genuine affection for me.
00:12:12Well... what do you think of her, Data?
00:12:17I find her to be a competent officer, highly motivated, though, somewhat lacking in her understanding of the theory underlying the dilithium matrix application.
00:12:28I meant personally.
00:12:32I look forward to the time we spend together.
00:12:35Well, then it seems the next move is yours.
00:12:39What are you going to do?
00:12:41I do not know.
00:12:43I have no experience in such matters.
00:12:46I require advice.
00:12:48Don't look at me.
00:12:51No, no, Data.
00:12:53I simply mean that I can't give you any advice here.
00:12:58It's not good to advise people about their first love affairs.
00:13:01That's kind of something people have to figure out for themselves.
00:13:05But I am not capable of love.
00:13:07Then it's going to be a very unique experience.
00:13:22Data?
00:13:24Missing someone?
00:13:25I found Spot wandering through the corridor two sections away.
00:13:29Thank you.
00:13:31Forget to secure the door when you left?
00:13:33The door sensor is programmed to recognize only humanoid forms per entrance and egress.
00:13:37Spot could not have triggered the mechanism.
00:13:40Maybe somebody came in while you were away.
00:13:43Let him out by accident.
00:13:46Has anything been disturbed?
00:13:48It does not appear so.
00:13:51Computer, has anyone been in my quarters in the last 12 hours other than Commander La Forge or myself?
00:13:58COMPUTER: Negative.
00:14:00That's pretty strange.
00:14:02You know, to be on the safe side, maybe I should report a possible unauthorized entry to Security.
00:14:08Geordi, may I ask your advice... in a personal matter?
00:14:14Sure, Data.
00:14:16Should I pursue a relationship with Lieutenant D'Sora?
00:14:19I thought she and Jeff Arton...
00:14:23They have discontinued their association.
00:14:25She has made the first move in initiating a relationship with me.
00:14:29What should I do?
00:14:31( sighs )
00:14:33Boy.
00:14:34If she's just coming out of a bad situation... you know, sometimes it takes people a while, Data.
00:14:44But then, if they jump right into another relationship... you see that can be trouble.
00:14:48Unless, of course, she's really ready and then... well, I guess it depends on whether or not you're really serious.
00:14:57This can be a little complicated.
00:14:59Listen, my advice is... ask somebody else for advice.
00:15:04At least someone who's got more experience at giving advice.
00:15:13I think you should be careful.
00:15:16This isn't just some experiment you're running, Data.
00:15:20Jenna is a living, breathing person with needs and feelings that have to be considered.
00:15:25Then you do not believe I should pursue this any further.
00:15:28I didn't say that.
00:15:30I just want you to be aware that this is unlike any other more casual relationship that you've attempted.
00:15:36I have studied much human literature on the subject of love and romantic liaisons.
00:15:42There are many role models for me to emulate.
00:15:44Ultimately, Jenna will care for you for who you are, not what you imitate out of a book.
00:15:51My programming may be inadequate to the task.
00:15:54We're all more than the sum of our parts, Data.
00:15:58You'll have to be more than the sum of your programming.
00:16:05Klingons do not pursue relationships.
00:16:09They conquer that which they desire.
00:16:14However...
00:16:17Lieutenant D'Sora serves under my command.
00:16:21If she were mistreated,
00:16:23I would be very displeased... sir.
00:16:34I understand.
00:16:38I think you should pursue it.
00:16:40First of all, she's a beautiful woman.
00:16:42She seems to be crazy about you.
00:16:44Jenna has clearly demonstrated how she feels about me, but I am not capable of returning those feelings.
00:16:50Data... when you get involved with another person, there are always risks-- of disappointment, of getting hurt.
00:17:00I cannot be hurt, but she can.
00:17:03Jenna knows that and she has obviously decided to take the chance.
00:17:07Data, when it really works between two people, it's not like anything you've ever experienced.
00:17:13The rewards are far greater than simple friendship.
00:17:16How far, sir?
00:17:18That's what I'm hoping you're going to find out.
00:17:28Captain?
00:17:31I am seeking advice in how to...
00:17:33Yes, I've heard, Data.
00:17:35And I will be delighted to offer any advice I can on understanding women.
00:17:40When I have some, I'll let you know.
00:17:47Second Officer's Personal Log,
00:17:50Stardate 44935.6:
00:17:53After conferring with my colleagues
00:17:55regarding the nature of romantic love in general,
00:17:57and my own situation in particular,
00:18:00I have reached a decision.
00:18:05Oh, they're lovely.
00:18:07Come in.
00:18:11What are they? A variety of crystilia.
00:18:14Their fragrance is an evolutionary response to the acrid nature of the atmosphere on Telemarius IV.
00:18:20You silver-tongued devil.
00:18:23Um, why don't I find a place to put these... which won't be that easy.
00:18:29Ah.
00:18:32It seems your quarters have reverted to their earlier state of disorder.
00:18:36I know. I'm hopeless.
00:18:38There.
00:18:40They're beautiful, Data.
00:18:41It's really sweet of you.
00:18:43Commander Riker suggested this particular flower.
00:18:46He said it had worked for him in the past.
00:18:51You didn't talk to the entire ship about us?
00:18:54No. In actuality, less than one percent of the Enterprise crew was involved.
00:18:59Huh.
00:19:01It was necessary to balance theory with experiential referents.
00:19:06Both are required for a program of this nature.
00:19:13Computer, decrease illumination level by one-third standard lux.
00:19:22Uh, this is all part of a program?
00:19:26Yes, one which I just created for romantic relationships.
00:19:29So I'm, uh, I'm just a small variable in one of your new computational environments?
00:19:38You are much more than that, Jenna.
00:19:40I have written a subroutine specifically for you-- a program within the program.
00:19:45I have devoted a considerable share of my internal resources to its development.
00:19:51Data... that's the nicest thing anybody's ever said to me.
00:20:12Estimated time of arrival, Mr. Data.
00:20:14We will reach the Class M planet in approximately 11 hours, sir.
00:20:18You have the Bridge, Number One.
00:20:43Picard to Lieutenant Worf.
00:20:44Yes, Captain.
00:20:46PICARD: Would you step into my ready room, please?
00:20:48And bring a tricorder with you.
00:20:51Aye, Captain.
00:20:56Captain?
00:20:58What do you make of this?
00:21:06I am puzzled, sir. So am I, Mr. Worf.
00:21:09The only detectable bioelectric residuals are your own.
00:21:13You did not... No, I did not.
00:21:17Well, perhaps we have a poltergeist.
00:21:20Sir?
00:21:22A mischievous spirit.
00:21:24Sir.
00:21:26Perhaps not.
00:21:32I cannot explain how an intruder entered this room.
00:21:35But I recommend we go to red alert. Not yet.
00:21:39Then I will order one of my officers to stand watch.
00:21:41Worf to Ensign-- That's all right, Mr. Worf.
00:21:43I think, for now, circumstances warrant caution, nothing more.
00:21:49As you wish, Captain.
00:22:06( door chimes )
00:22:09Enter.
00:22:13I know it's a little unexpected.
00:22:16You are correct.
00:22:17I did not anticipate your arrival until 1900 hours.
00:22:21Well, I couldn't wait.
00:22:23Um, I wanted you to have this.
00:22:30You have often expressed dissatisfaction with the spartan nature of my quarters.
00:22:35Is this an attempt at embellishment?
00:22:37The cat's out of the bag.
00:22:40Spot?
00:22:41No, I mean you've caught me in the act.
00:22:44I'm just trying to brighten things up around here.
00:22:47It's Tyrinean.
00:22:50What do you think?
00:22:52Its line is both fluid and formal, yet retains an unpremeditated quality.
00:22:57The tactility of its surface embellishment is evocative of the neo-primitive period in Tyrinean blade carving.
00:23:04Um, I hadn't thought of it in that way.
00:23:11I'm sorry. Don't let me interrupt.
00:23:13As you wish.
00:23:23Uh, Data? Yes?
00:23:27The book of love, chapter four, paragraph 17-- when your girlfriend arrives with a gift, stop whatever it is you're doing and give her your undivided attention.
00:23:42I should not have resumed my painting.
00:23:44No.
00:23:46Despite your suggestion that I continue.
00:23:50Exactly.
00:23:54I have much to learn.
00:23:58Um, why don't we start with this?
00:24:03A critical analysis isn't necessarily the best response to a gift.
00:24:08Perhaps if I looked for a suitable place to display it.
00:24:12Much better.
00:24:24The ambient light in this location accentuates its contours.
00:24:31However... a gift should not necessarily be placed according to aesthetic criteria.
00:24:38A more central location would give added meaning.
00:24:44Data, what's important is that you're trying.
00:24:48You don't know how much that means to me.
00:24:53Why don't you go back to your painting?
00:24:58Oh, I really mean it this time.
00:25:02I'll see you tonight.
00:25:24RIKER: Riker to Captain Picard.
00:25:26I think you'd better come out here, sir.
00:25:28Acknowledged.
00:25:40We've reached the designated coordinates, but the M Class planet... it's gone.
00:26:00Are you sure there was no malfunction in the sensors?
00:26:02The lateral E-M scanners register radiation levels indicative of a Class M planet.
00:26:07Sir...
00:26:17Mr. Data, run a full systems diagnostic.
00:26:19COMPUTER: Warning-- atmospheric decompression in Bridge observation lounge.
00:26:23Environmental compensation sequence has been initiated.
00:26:25I am not registering a hull breach.
00:26:28Scan for life-forms. None, sir.
00:26:31Captain, standard air pressure has been reestablished in the observation lounge.
00:26:37Let's have a look. Mr. Data?
00:26:46Captain.
00:26:53WORF: I do not understand.
00:26:56Are you picking anything up, Data?
00:26:59I detect no unusual readings along standard parameters.
00:27:02Curious.
00:27:04The transparent aluminum alloy of this window is exhibiting a pattern of transient electrical currents.
00:27:11Explanation. I have none.
00:27:13The rate is characteristic of a subspace distortion, but I am picking up no evidence of a subspace field.
00:27:18We'll hold position while we seek an explanation of these anomalies.
00:27:22Let's divert all our resources to that end.
00:27:35Honey, I'm home.
00:27:44Hi. Hi.
00:27:48Any luck with your diagnostic?
00:27:50Negative. We found no malfunctions.
00:27:54We did a full security sweep.
00:27:56Nothing.
00:28:02May I... get you a drink, dear?
00:28:07Well, yes.
00:28:09I'll... I'll have a Calaman sherry.
00:28:12Excellent choice.
00:28:14I'll join you.
00:28:20Computer, two...
00:28:23Calaman sherries.
00:28:35Would you care for some dinner as well?
00:28:37Oh, I'm too tired to think about what I want.
00:28:40Maybe later.
00:28:41Whatever you wish, dear.
00:28:47There we are.
00:28:49Uh-uh...
00:28:52Darling, you remain as aesthetically pleasing as the first day we met.
00:29:01I believe I am the most fortunate sentient in this sector of the galaxy.
00:29:15You... relax... put your feet up... and I will take care of everything.
00:29:37( singing aria from La Boheme )
00:29:58I could organize your closets for you.
00:30:00I have found that by grouping apparel, first by function, then by color, from light to dark, one can more easily find one's desired choice.
00:30:09Uh, Data... that's all right.
00:30:13You don't have to do that.
00:30:14But I am happy to do it.
00:30:16Please, just put them down.
00:30:19( shoes dropping )
00:30:21What do you wish me to do, dear?
00:30:24Am I not paying enough attention to you?
00:30:26Oh, no, that's not it, um...
00:30:28Perhaps I am not giving you enough compliments.
00:30:33Your hair... is looking particularly silky tonight.
00:30:39Data, there's just something strange about the way you're acting.
00:30:46Am I not behaving as a solicitous mate?
00:30:48Well, yes, but...
00:30:50Tending to your every need?
00:30:52What's wrong with you tonight?
00:30:57My most recent self-diagnostic revealed no malfunctions.
00:31:05Perhaps there is something wrong with you!
00:31:08I've never seen you behave so foolishly.
00:31:11Why are you doing this?
00:31:13You don't tell me how to behave. You're not my mother!
00:31:16What?
00:31:17You are not my mother.
00:31:20That is the appropriate response for your statement that I am behaving foolishly.
00:31:24Data, I think you should just leave.
00:31:27You do not wish to continue our lovers' quarrel?
00:31:31Is that what this is?
00:31:33In my study of interpersonal dynamics,
00:31:37I have found that conflict, followed by emotional release often strengthens the connection between two people.
00:31:44But there's something so forced and artificial about the way you're doing it, Data.
00:31:52It's just not the real you.
00:31:55With regard to romantic relationships, there is no real me.
00:32:01I am drawing upon various cultural and literary sources to help define my role.
00:32:09Kiss me.
00:32:19What were you just thinking?
00:32:22In that particular moment,
00:32:24I was reconfiguring the warp field parameters, analyzing the collective works of Charles Dickens, calculating the maximum pressure
00:32:32I could safely apply to your lips, considering a food supplement for Spot...
00:32:40I'm glad I was in there somewhere.
00:32:53A complete sensor scan of the planet and three survey probes came up with no surprises.
00:32:57No signs of life. Nothing out of the ordinary.
00:32:59Seven more unusual incidents have been reported.
00:33:02No casualties or damage.
00:33:04We can only state that a subspace effect seems to exist within this nebula.
00:33:08After I have made further analysis,
00:33:10I may be able to adjust the ship's sensors to locate and identify the anomaly.
00:33:14RIKER: The ship's at risk as long as we're sitting here.
00:33:16We could continue the investigation outside the nebula.
00:33:19Agreed.
00:33:21Ensign McKnight, plot the most direct course ahead warp one.
00:33:23Aye, sir. Engage.
00:33:25DATA: Captain...
00:33:36Captain, explosive decompression on Deck 37.
00:33:39Bridge to La Forge. Damage report.
00:33:42We're showing damage between decks.
00:33:43We haven't localized it yet.
00:33:47( moaning )
00:33:50Thorne, are you all right? Yes, sir.
00:33:54La Forge to Bridge.
00:33:55A cryogenic control conduit just blew out on us.
00:33:57I almost lost a man.
00:34:00Ensign, full stop.
00:34:01Aye, sir.
00:34:03LA FORGE: La Forge to Bridge. Go ahead, Commander.
00:34:05LA FORGE: I think we have some structural damage between Decks 36 and 37.
00:34:09I'd better go check it out.
00:34:15Van Mayter, you take access tube 23 M and look at those Bridge connectors.
00:34:19Thorne, I'll cover the aft section.
00:34:21You go down...
00:34:22( woman screams )
00:34:44Captain's Log, supplemental:
00:34:45This series of unexplained events
00:34:47has now resulted in the death of a crewman.
00:34:50But it appears Mr. Data may have an explanation.
00:34:53DATA: During the last occurrence,
00:34:55I was able to confirm one of my hypotheses.
00:34:59The unusual preponderance of dark matter in this nebula is causing small gaps in the fabric of normal space.
00:35:06As the Enterprise moves through this nebula, it is colliding with these deformations.
00:35:11So every time we hit one, part of the ship momentarily phases out of normal space.
00:35:16Or when one of them hits us.
00:35:18My readings suggest that the deformations are in motion.
00:35:22It's a good thing one of those pockets didn't pass through the photon torpedo casings.
00:35:25Or one of the matter/anti-matter containment pods.
00:35:27The question is how do we get out?
00:35:29Mr. Data, could you reconfigure the sensors so as to detect these anomalies?
00:35:33Yes, sir, but only at extremely close range.
00:35:36Even at minimal speed, it would be impossible to maneuver the Enterprise quickly enough to avoid them.
00:35:41A shuttlecraft is more maneuverable.
00:35:44He's right.
00:35:46If we could position the shuttlecraft far enough in front of the Enterprise, it could detect the pockets and allow us enough time to maneuver out of the way.
00:35:54We could give the shuttle control of our navigational systems.
00:35:57That way the corresponding maneuvers would be virtually instantaneous.
00:36:01Make it so.
00:36:06RIKER: I'll do my pre-flight once I'm on board.
00:36:08Not this time, Will. I want you on the Bridge.
00:36:12Sir?
00:36:14I'm going to pilot the shuttle.
00:36:17Captain, it is my duty as First Officer to safeguard the lives on this ship, including yours.
00:36:22The Enterprise can't afford to lose you, certainly not in this situation.
00:36:25I believe our best chance of escaping this situation is for me to pilot the shuttle.
00:36:29It's my ship, Will.
00:36:31I've got to do this.
00:36:33Sir.
00:36:47Shuttle three to Enterprise.
00:36:50Telemetry link enabled.
00:36:51DATA: Ship's computer is accepting navigational inputs from the shuttle.
00:36:56Forward sensors are online.
00:36:58Ensign McKnight, plot a course for the shortest distance out of the nebula.
00:37:02McKNIGHT: Plot laid in, sir.
00:37:03Outer perimeter at 32 million kilometers.
00:37:06PICARD: Point one impulse, Number One.
00:37:08Acknowledged, Captain, We're right behind you.
00:37:11Riker to O'Brien, lock on to the Captain's communicator.
00:37:14I want to be able to pull him out of there in case we have to.
00:37:16Aye, sir.
00:37:26Changing course.
00:37:28New heading, 299.029.
00:37:33Main coupling is matching navigational inputs, Captain.
00:37:36New heading confirmed.
00:37:38I missed it by less than 1,000 meters, Enterprise.
00:37:41Advise your status.
00:37:43Sensors indicate deformation passing 500 meters off the starboard bow.
00:37:47One down, Captain.
00:37:49Resuming previous course.
00:37:52McKNIGHT: Confirmed.
00:37:53Outer perimeter now at 30.1 million kilometers.
00:37:56Changing course. Heading 073.288.
00:38:04New heading, 284.01--
00:38:12Enterprise, I'm losing maneuverability.
00:38:15Sensors indicate damage to the shuttle's starboard impulse nacelle.
00:38:19I'm re-routing the secondary deuterium supply.
00:38:23Switching to manual control.
00:38:26Transceiver signal is down 42%.
00:38:28Navigational inputs are not registering.
00:38:30We've lost our link, Captain.
00:38:32You'll have to make course changes manually until we reestablish the connection.
00:38:36Understood. Mr. Data, get us back online.
00:38:39Geordi, boosting the power to the L-U bands.
00:38:41McKnight, increase the distance between the Enterprise and the shuttle.
00:38:45We're going to need some more room to make manual adjustments.
00:38:53New heading, 299.18.
00:38:56McKNIGHT: Yes, sir, I've got it. Course corrected.
00:38:58Enterprise, hard starboard!
00:39:01McKNIGHT: Aye, sir.
00:39:04Deformation impact on Deck 15,
00:39:07Science section.
00:39:09Damage?
00:39:10WORF: Reports coming in. Minimal damage.
00:39:13Mr. La Forge,
00:39:16I'm still having difficulty controlling the shuttlecraft.
00:39:18LA FORGE: Aye, sir. Your krellide storage cells are losing their charge.
00:39:21Maintaining manual control is going to become increasingly difficult.
00:39:23Estimated distance to the nebula's perimeter?
00:39:26DATA: 4.7 million kilometers, sir.
00:39:28Is there a way to transfer the microfusion thrusters so I can get a power boost?
00:39:31DATA: Possibly.
00:39:33If you augment the thruster sequencing so that the inertial dampening fields...
00:39:36Relative bearing 27... make that 285.255.
00:39:44Commander, the shuttle is out of control.
00:39:47Mr. O'Brien, do you have the Captain's signal?
00:39:49O'Brien: I'm having trouble locking on, sir.
00:39:52Sir, the shuttle's inertial dampeners have failed.
00:39:54It is breaking up.
00:39:56Let's get him out of there.
00:40:00Now would be a good time, Mr. O'Brien.
00:40:07Did we get him back?
00:40:10O'BRIEN: Aye, sir, we got him.
00:40:12PICARD: I'm a little dizzy, Number One, but none the worse.
00:40:16I'm on my way.
00:40:18Acknowledged, sir.
00:40:20Commander, we are nearing the perimeter.
00:40:22One million kilometers away.
00:40:24All right, let's make a run for it.
00:40:26McKNIGHT: Aye, sir.
00:40:40We're clear of the nebula, sir.
00:40:43Ensign, plot a course for Starbase 260. Warp two.
00:40:46Aye, sir.
00:40:48Engage.
00:41:06( door chimes )
00:41:08Enter.
00:41:10Hi.
00:41:11Hi.
00:41:13The place looks great.
00:41:16Thank you.
00:41:18It is much less spartan, is it not?
00:41:20Much less.
00:41:22It looks great.
00:41:24It really does.
00:41:26It looks... great.
00:41:29Jenna, you are repeating yourself.
00:41:32I have often found this to be indicative of a mental distraction.
00:41:36Is that a correct assumption in this instance?
00:41:39Um, I'm afraid it is.
00:41:42Then perhaps we should begin our meal.
00:41:44Among humans, a low serum glucose level is...
00:41:47Data, I think we should talk.
00:41:53Could you sit down?
00:41:59Um...
00:42:03I'm not sure how to begin.
00:42:05What is the subject?
00:42:07You and I.
00:42:09Our relationship. Yes?
00:42:14Data, sometimes people blindly make the same mistake again and again.
00:42:21Are you currently experiencing this phenomenon?
00:42:25I didn't see it until today.
00:42:29I got out of a relationship with an unemotional man and I got right back into another one... with... with a man who's absolutely incapable of emotion.
00:42:46Hmm... there does appear to be a recurring motif.
00:42:52You were so kind and attentive.
00:42:55I thought that would be enough.
00:42:58Is it not?
00:43:00No, it's not.
00:43:04Because as close as we are, I...
00:43:08I don't really matter to you.
00:43:10Not really.
00:43:12Nothing I can say or do will ever make you happy or sad... or touch you in any way.
00:43:22That is a valid projection.
00:43:24It is apparent that my reach has exceeded my grasp in this particular area.
00:43:29I am, perhaps, not nearly so human as I aspire to become.
00:43:34If you are ready to eat, I will bring our meal.
00:43:37Uh... no.
00:43:40That's all right, Data.
00:43:43I'm going to go now.
00:43:45As you wish.
00:43:51Jenna... are we no longer... a couple?
00:44:01No, we're not.
00:44:03Then I will delete the appropriate program.
00:44:11I'll see you later.
00:44:22Hello, Spot.
