The Outcast
00:00:02Captain's Log, Stardate 45614.6.
00:00:06We have been contacted by an androgynous race
00:00:09called the J'naii to investigate
00:00:11the mysterious disappearance of one of their shuttlecraft.
00:00:14Captain, we are approaching the designated coordinates.
00:00:18On screen.
00:00:21PICARD: Long-range scan, Mr. Data.
00:00:24Sensors find no evidence of the shuttle anywhere within the star system.
00:00:29It couldn't have traveled outside the system.
00:00:32Mr. Data, reconfigure high-resolution sweep.
00:00:34Radius one million kilometers. Check for any debris.
00:00:36Scans find no debris within that radius.
00:00:39I don't understand it.
00:00:40A shuttle doesn't simply vanish.
00:00:43There has to be an explanation.
00:00:45DATA: Captain...
00:00:46I'm detecting an unusual reading.
00:00:49It appears to be a neutrino emission with no visible source.
00:00:52Explanation.
00:00:53DATA: I have none, sir.
00:00:55I recommend we launch a probe.
00:00:58Make it so.
00:01:02Probe is launched.
00:01:08Sensors show no evidence of any unusual phenomenon.
00:01:15The probe is no longer transmitting.
00:01:20J'NAII: What happened?
00:01:23Where did it go?
00:02:02PICARD: Space, the final frontier.
00:02:07These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:02:11Its continuing mission--
00:02:12to explore strange new worlds...
00:02:16to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:02:20to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:03:22Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:03:23The sudden disappearance of our probe
00:03:26suggests that we may have found
00:03:27the first instance of what is called "null space--"
00:03:30an anomaly which, until now, had been only theoretical.
00:03:34Commander Riker has been working around the clock
00:03:36with a team of J'naii specialists
00:03:39to formalize this hypothesis.
00:03:40During the creation of a star system, when clouds of interstellar dust and gas coalesce, turbulent regions of magnetic and gravitational fields may develop.
00:03:50If certain conditions occur these fields can condense into abnormal pockets of space.
00:03:56We think your system contains one of these null pockets.
00:03:59If we're right, the pocket would absorb electromagnetic energy from anything that entered it.
00:04:05J'NAII: Like a shuttlecraft.
00:04:06RIKER: Or a probe.
00:04:07Making them powerless.
00:04:08But, outside the pocket all the energy is bent around it, making it naturally cloaked.
00:04:14That's why we cannot see it and our sensors cannot read it.
00:04:19Is the shuttle still there?
00:04:20RIKER: We think so.
00:04:22The shuttle probably was not able to sustain its energy but, other than that, it wouldn't be damaged.
00:04:25Since our shuttles carry plestorene-based backup systems we think life-support would sustain for as long as ten days.
00:04:33Then perhaps our crew has survived.
00:04:35We could send in one of our own shuttles, but its energy would also be absorbed.
00:04:39Our chief engineer is working on a way to maintain the power reserves long enough to rescue your crew.
00:04:44Commander... we're grateful for your help.
00:04:48Whatever resources we can provide are yours.
00:05:04I've been thinking.
00:05:06When the time comes,
00:05:07I would like to pilot the shuttle.
00:05:09It's a Starfleet craft.
00:05:10I cannot ask you to put yourself in danger to rescue our crew.
00:05:14You can't pilot a shuttle you're not familiar with.
00:05:17I happen to be a good pilot.
00:05:19I happen to be a good pilot, too, and I know my way around the Starfleet shuttle.
00:05:24So, what if we team up?
00:05:26When can we go over the shuttle flight operations?
00:05:29Right now.
00:05:37SOREN: Is this the one?
00:05:39RIKER: This is it. Short-range craft.
00:05:42Two 1250-millicochrane warp engines.
00:05:44Looks like microfusion thrusters?
00:05:46Right. Armament?
00:05:47None, usually, but this one's been equipped with two type-4 phaser emitters.
00:05:52We'll use those to chart the null space.
00:05:54Chart it?
00:05:55Mr. La Forge wants to get an idea of the size of the pocket.
00:05:58He thinks the rate of energy absorption's linked to its size.
00:06:01I'm not sure how we'd go about mapping something we can't see.
00:06:04Well, that's where the emitters come in.
00:06:05We shoot out a series of photon pulses into the pocket and chart where each one disappears.
00:06:10From that, we should get a fairly complete outline.
00:06:13Let's have a look at the controls.
00:06:23Later, we'll try a flight simulation.
00:06:24Right now, let's do a systems review.
00:06:26I'll talk you through it.
00:06:27Let me try it.
00:06:28Propulsion system, transfer conduits... where's the schematic reactor assembly?
00:06:33Oh, there it is.
00:06:35Engine nacelles.
00:06:37There's nothing here that's unfamiliar.
00:06:40Navigational deflector, redundant.
00:06:42Graviton polarity source generators...
00:06:44You handle these controls like you grew up in a shuttle.
00:06:46I did.
00:06:48My parents were pilots.
00:06:49I was flying with them before I could walk.
00:06:51As soon as I was old enough, I entered flight school.
00:06:54Krite was my instructor.
00:06:55He had a good student.
00:06:57"He?" Commander, there are no he's or she's in a species without gender.
00:07:02Okay. For two days, I've been trying to construct sentences without personal pronouns.
00:07:07Now I give up. What should I use, "it"?
00:07:09To us, that's rude.
00:07:10We use a pronoun that is neutral.
00:07:12I do not think there is really a translation.
00:07:16Well, then I'll just have to muddle through.
00:07:18So, forgive me if the stray "he" or "she" slips by, okay?
00:07:22Well, if that's the systems review,
00:07:24I don't see any problem.
00:07:26What's next?
00:07:28Lunch.
00:07:31Thank you.
00:07:32What is it?
00:07:33Split pea soup.
00:07:34It's my father's recipe.
00:07:36I had it programmed into the replicators.
00:07:40Well?
00:07:43Unusual... but I think I like it.
00:07:47It's very healthy.
00:07:49Helps to keep you warm on cold Alaskan nights.
00:07:52We prefer to stay warm by sleeping with a friend.
00:07:55I see.
00:07:59Not to mate.
00:08:01Just to sleep together, for warmth.
00:08:05That still sounds better than pea soup.
00:08:08We are puzzling to you, aren't we?
00:08:10A little.
00:08:12It's hard to grasp the idea of no gender.
00:08:16It is just as hard for us to understand... the strange division in your species.
00:08:23Males and females.
00:08:26You are male?
00:08:28Mm-hmm.
00:08:30Tell me about males.
00:08:32What is it makes you different from females?
00:08:38( sighing )
00:08:40"Snips and snails and puppy dog tails."
00:08:44You have a dog's tail?
00:08:46It's an old nursery rhyme.
00:08:48Girls are made from sugar and spice and boys are made from snips and... snails.
00:08:53That makes it sound better to be female.
00:08:56It's an old-fashioned way of looking at the sexes-- not to say that there's no real difference between them.
00:09:03Physically, men are bigger, stronger in the upper body.
00:09:07We have different sexual organs.
00:09:09Men can't bear young.
00:09:11And what about feelings or emotional attitudes?
00:09:15Are they different?
00:09:17Most people think so, but that's the kind of question it would take a lifetime to answer.
00:09:24Let me ask you.
00:09:25What's it like on a planet where the people have no gender?
00:09:30I'm afraid I don't understand.
00:09:34Well...
00:09:39Who leads when you dance, if you dance?
00:09:42We do... and whosever taller leads.
00:09:47Without the battle of the sexes, you probably don't have as many arguments.
00:09:52Just because we don't have gender doesn't mean we don't have conflicts.
00:09:56We are very strong-minded.
00:09:57We love a good fight.
00:09:59From the sound of it, there's not that much difference between our species.
00:10:02Maybe not.
00:10:10What kind of... woman do you find attractive?
00:10:16I like one who's intelligent and sure of herself... who I can talk with and get something back.
00:10:22But the most important thing of all?
00:10:25She has to laugh at my jokes.
00:10:30Tell me... is that the kind of woman that all human males prefer?
00:10:36Not at all.
00:10:37Some like quiet, demure women.
00:10:40Others prefer a lot of energy.
00:10:42Some only respond to physical attractiveness.
00:10:47Others couldn't care less.
00:10:49There are no rules.
00:10:50You make it sound very complex.
00:10:53Believe me, it is.
00:10:55Well, perhaps it is that complexity which makes the differences in the sexes so... interesting.
00:11:04Good evening, Commander.
00:11:09Good evening.
00:11:10Please take my place, Krite.
00:11:11I have to be going.
00:11:13Thank you for going over the flight protocols, Commander.
00:11:16It was very helpful.
00:11:26Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:11:28Commander Riker and the J'naii pilot
00:11:30have set out to chart the null space pocket.
00:11:32If they are successful,
00:11:34we can then proceed with a rescue attempt.
00:11:37I've illuminated Delta-Four grid map.
00:11:39We'll start there and expand.
00:11:41Stand by forward phaser array.
00:11:49The pulse vanished at Delta 4.2 by .3.
00:11:53Firing second burst.
00:11:55J'NAII: Delta 4.4 by .5.
00:11:58RIKER: This is working.
00:12:00Initiating computer task handoff.
00:12:08Commander, tell me about your sexual organs.
00:12:15Uh...
00:12:17Is that an uncomfortable subject for humans?
00:12:20No, but it doesn't tend to be a topic of casual conversation.
00:12:24I'm interested in your mating practices.
00:12:28What is involved with two sexes?
00:12:32Correcting course-- 021, mark 0.
00:12:39Mating.
00:12:43Right.
00:12:44Well, it's pretty simple.
00:12:46The men inseminate the women, and the women carry the baby.
00:12:48Our fetuses are incubated in fibrous husks which the parents inseminate.
00:12:55From what we know of other species, our method is less risky, and less painful.
00:13:01And less enjoyable.
00:13:03Less enjoyable?
00:13:05For humans... the sexual act brings a closeness and intimacy.
00:13:12It can be a very pleasurable experience.
00:13:17Inseminating a husk...
00:13:19That's just the last step.
00:13:23Mating is a long ritual for us, full of variety and invention.
00:13:28I assure you...
00:13:30It is extremely pleasurable.
00:13:33I'm picking up neutrino emission from within the null space.
00:13:37That may be coming from our shuttle.
00:13:40I'll note these coordinates.
00:13:41I wonder.
00:13:45RIKER: What?
00:13:47If a human and J'naii would be sexually compatible.
00:13:52I don't know.
00:13:54Of course, it would never be permitted.
00:13:56Why not?
00:13:58The idea of gender-- it is offensive to my people.
00:14:03You see, long ago, we had two sexes, as you do.
00:14:07But we evolved into a higher form.
00:14:12I don't mean to sound insulting, but on my planet, we have been taught that gender is... primitive.
00:14:22Primitive?
00:14:24Less evolved.
00:14:27Maybe so.
00:14:29But sometimes, there's a lot to be said for an experience that's primitive.
00:14:36Delta-Five grid map is fully plotted.
00:14:38Adjusting course-- 029 mark 0.
00:14:52The port engine's down!
00:14:53Reducing power to the starboard nacelle.
00:14:55That's not enough.
00:14:56I have to activate the maneuvering thrusters.
00:14:58Thrusters aren't responding.
00:15:00I'll try to reroute the firing sequence.
00:15:03Inertial dampeners are failing!
00:15:05Hang on!
00:15:07LA FORGE: Enterprise to shuttle. Do you read me?
00:15:10Affirmative. We've lost an engine.
00:15:11We'll try to get a tractor beam on you.
00:15:14The sooner the better.
00:15:15Enterprise, we have an injury.
00:15:17Transport Soren directly to Sick Bay.
00:15:19Right away, Commander.
00:15:30It's just a minor concussion.
00:15:32You're going to be fine.
00:15:34This will reduce the inflammation.
00:15:39Doctor?
00:15:42You are female?
00:15:44Yes.
00:15:45Forgive me.
00:15:47I do not mean to be rude, but I'm curious.
00:15:50What is it like?
00:15:52Well, it's... it's just the way I am.
00:15:57I've never really thought about what it's like.
00:15:59I notice you tend to have longer hair.
00:16:02Hmm.
00:16:03And you arrange it more elaborately.
00:16:07And you apply color to your bodies.
00:16:09Color?
00:16:10You put color on your mouths and your eyes, your cheeks, and your fingernails.
00:16:18The men don't.
00:16:20That's true.
00:16:21Then it is up to women to attract the men?
00:16:26Oh, no.
00:16:27Men want to be attractive, too, believe me.
00:16:29They just go about it differently.
00:16:32No color.
00:16:34No color.
00:16:36They like to pretend they're not doing anything to attract a woman, even when it's the most important thing on their minds.
00:16:47This is very confusing.
00:16:50Then... are women considered more superior?
00:16:54Or the men?
00:16:56Neither.
00:16:59In the past... women were often considered weak and inferior.
00:17:08But... that hasn't been true for a long time.
00:17:12Will... your copilot is going to be fine.
00:17:17The injury was minor.
00:17:18Glad to hear it.
00:17:20I'm afraid you're not rid of me yet, Commander.
00:17:22I will be able to complete the mission.
00:17:24I'm glad you're feeling better.
00:17:26What happened?
00:17:27What made the shuttle go into a spin?
00:17:29The port nacelle must have nipped one of the protrusions from the null pocket and shut it down.
00:17:33Are we still on schedule, then?
00:17:35That depends on how you're doing.
00:17:38I'm fine. We should go check the port engine.
00:17:41Whoa.
00:17:43I think we should get the doctor's opinion first.
00:17:45Doctor?
00:17:47I don't see any problem.
00:17:48But if you feel any symptoms-- headache, dizziness-- come back.
00:17:52You have my word.
00:18:02All right.
00:18:04This hand, the game is "Federation Day."
00:18:09What is that?
00:18:11Well, the Federation was founded in 2161.
00:18:14So... twos, sixes and aces are wild.
00:18:18That is a woman's game.
00:18:21Oh? Why is that?
00:18:23All those wild cards.
00:18:25They support a weak hand.
00:18:27A man's game has no wild cards.
00:18:30Let me get this straight.
00:18:31You're saying it's a woman's game because women are weak and need more help?
00:18:35Yes.
00:18:37And just this afternoon,
00:18:38I was insisting to one of the J'naii that those attitudes were but a distant memory.
00:18:44The J'naii... they bother me.
00:18:48Why, Worf?
00:18:49Well, they just do.
00:18:51They're all alike.
00:18:52No males, no females.
00:18:54Well, I'm sure we're just as strange to them.
00:18:57Well, one of them seems to be overcoming the differences, at least in regards to one of us.
00:19:02What are you saying, Doctor?
00:19:04I could be wrong, but I get the definite impression that Soren is attracted to Commander Riker.
00:19:10A human and a J'naii?
00:19:13Impossible.
00:19:16Why?
00:19:17Good question.
00:19:18Worf?
00:19:24With all these wild cards it is difficult to know what is exactly in my hand.
00:19:30However, I will open with 50.
00:19:36The portable transporter array is in.
00:19:38When we get into the null space we'll need to initialize it before we can transport the J'naii crew onto this shuttle.
00:19:44But there should still be enough power left to beam us all back to the Enterprise.
00:19:48Is the buffer field generator installed?
00:19:50Not yet. Geordi thinks that'll be ready by 0800 hours tomorrow.
00:19:54But before that, we should see if we can balance this engine.
00:19:58Can you access the starboard manifold thrust?
00:20:09There.
00:20:11Set the arc at 6.3.
00:20:13I'll optimize the plasma flow.
00:20:19Commander...
00:20:21I'd like to tell you something.
00:20:26Something that's not easy to say.
00:20:29What's that?
00:20:35I find you attractive.
00:20:41I am taking a terrible risk telling you that.
00:20:44It means revealing something to you, something that, if it were known on my planet would be very dangerous for me.
00:20:59Occasionally, among my people... there are a few who are born different-- who are throwbacks from the era when we all had gender.
00:21:16Some have strong inclinations to maleness and some have urges to be female.
00:21:25I am one of the latter.
00:21:29I have to admit, I had a feeling you were different.
00:21:34I was hoping you would.
00:21:37But in front of Krite and the others,
00:21:40I must be careful not to reveal myself.
00:21:43Why?
00:21:44On our world, these feelings are forbidden.
00:21:47Those who are discovered are shamed and ridiculed.
00:21:51And only by undergoing psychotectic therapy and having all elements of gender eliminated can they be accepted into society again.
00:22:05Those of us who have these urges live secret and guarded lives.
00:22:10We seek each other out... always hiding... always terrified of being discovered.
00:22:19How long have you known that you were like this?
00:22:23I have known I was different all my life, but I did not know how or why until I was older.
00:22:33And when you realized-- what then?
00:22:37I remember when I was very young, before I knew what I was, there was a rumor at my school that one of the students preferred a gender-- in that case, male.
00:22:56The children started making fun of him and every day, they were more cruel.
00:23:03They could tell he was afraid, and somehow, that seemed to encourage them.
00:23:11One morning in class, he appeared, bleeding and in ripped clothes.
00:23:19He said he had fallen down.
00:23:24And, of course, the school authorities found out and took him away and gave him psychotectic treatments.
00:23:36When he came back... he stood in front of the whole school and told us how happy he was, now that he had been cured.
00:23:50After that, I realized how dangerous it was to be different.
00:23:56And once I got older and knew what I was,
00:24:02I was terrified.
00:24:06I have had to live with that fear ever since.
00:24:10Do you have... relationships with others?
00:24:15Yes... with those who have discovered they are male.
00:24:21I have had to live a life of pretense and lies but with you, I can be honest.
00:24:30Please, don't say anything.
00:24:34Just think about it.
00:24:47That's it, Commander. Everything checks out.
00:24:50The energy buffer is installed and functioning.
00:24:53I estimate it should reduce the power drain to your systems by about 40%.
00:24:56Any guess how long we'll have?
00:24:57Let's just say you don't want to waste any time once you get in there.
00:25:00You'll have to give him continuous readouts on energy consumption.
00:25:03I can't even predict if the drain will be at a constant rate.
00:25:06I understand.
00:25:07Then that's it.
00:25:08Commander, I'll monitor you as far as I can but, once you get inside that pocket, you're on your own.
00:25:12We don't have any idea what condition the shuttlecraft crew is in, so we'll all beam directly to sick bay.
00:25:16I'll notify Dr. Crusher to be standing by.
00:25:23La Forge to bridge.
00:25:25PICARD: Picard here.
00:25:26We're ready to initiate shuttle prelaunch sequence.
00:25:29Proceed, Mr. Data.
00:25:30Initiating prelaunch sequence.
00:25:33RIKER: Request flight clearance.
00:25:36Clearance is granted.
00:25:37The shuttle is underway, sir.
00:25:40Good hunting, Commander.
00:25:41RIKER: Thank you, sir. See you for dinner.
00:25:44Heading confirmed.
00:25:45Energy readings are normal with power reserves stabilized at 100%.
00:25:50Acknowledged.
00:25:52It's dead ahead.
00:25:53Approximately 50 kilometers.
00:25:55Riker to Enterprise. We're taking her in.
00:26:03Riker to Enterprise.
00:26:06Riker to Enterprise.
00:26:09Power reserves are down to 84%.
00:26:12Look.
00:26:13Try hailing them.
00:26:16Calling the Taris Murn.
00:26:19Do you read me?
00:26:20( console beeping )
00:26:23I'm getting sensor readings.
00:26:24They're unconscious, but they're alive.
00:26:25Stand by.
00:26:27I'm going to transport them over here.
00:26:28Power reserves at 68% and dropping.
00:26:38( sighs )
00:26:39The null space must be affecting the annular confinement beam.
00:26:42We used ten megajoules with that attempt.
00:26:44We're down to 34% of reserves.
00:26:46We can give it one more try.
00:26:47More than that, we won't have enough power to get ourselves out of here.
00:26:59They need medical attention quickly.
00:27:01Okay, stand by to transport to the Enterprise.
00:27:03Here we go.
00:27:07Energy consumption?
00:27:11We're down to nine percent.
00:27:12We don't have enough to get back.
00:27:14If we just sit here, we'll lose all of our systems within an hour, including life-support.
00:27:18Okay, I'm rerouting the propulsion system to the transporter.
00:27:22Rechannel the navigation systems.
00:27:24Let's transfer every microjoule of energy we've got.
00:27:27Sensors... life-support.
00:27:28This might give us one last shot.
00:27:31But if we use an energy shift of that size, it will overload the phase compensators.
00:27:34The shuttle...
00:27:35...will explode.
00:27:36But if we stay here, we're dead, anyway.
00:27:38Maximum energy levels, five seconds.
00:27:41( consoles beeping )
00:27:45See you in a minute.
00:28:03CRUSHER: They've been oxygen deprived.
00:28:06But there doesn't seem to be any significant damage.
00:28:08Prepare some dexalin.
00:28:09Yes, Doctor.
00:28:12Commander...
00:28:13Thank you.
00:28:15Your colleague, Soren, was very helpful.
00:28:17Captain, would you all join us this evening?
00:28:20We would like to express our gratitude.
00:28:22We'd be happy to.
00:28:24Noor will be eager for a firsthand report.
00:28:28We should return to the surface.
00:28:30I will see you later tonight, Commander.
00:28:42( conversation and laughter )
00:28:57There you are, Commander.
00:29:01I wondered what had happened to our guest of honor.
00:29:03I just needed some air.
00:29:05I can only take so much of those social functions, and then I need to breathe a little.
00:29:09I would think you had attended so many affairs like this that it had become second nature to you.
00:29:15I was raised outdoors.
00:29:17I've never been very... comfortable in crowded rooms.
00:29:31What do you think of our planet?
00:29:34Isn't it beautiful?
00:29:36Yes, it is.
00:29:38It's beautiful.
00:29:43We have many varieties of plant life.
00:29:47Perhaps you would like to inspect some of them?
00:29:51Yes, I would.
00:29:52I've always been interested in exobotany.
00:29:56Please, let me take you on a tour.
00:29:59Thank you.
00:30:01It's kind of you.
00:30:15One of my favorites is this menellen tree.
00:30:19The leaves first turn pure white and then blue when the weather gets cold.
00:30:26This is called a falla bush.
00:30:29It produces a fragrant flower on only one day of the year.
00:31:01Captain's Log, Stardate 45620.4.
00:31:05In the hope that a detailed map of the null space
00:31:07will prevent the loss of other ships,
00:31:09we remain in orbit of J'naii, charting the anomaly.
00:31:20( door chimes )
00:31:22Come in.
00:31:27Hello, Will.
00:31:29What's all this?
00:31:30Wonderful things.
00:31:33My mother sent me a box that belonged to one of my father's ancestors.
00:31:38It was stored on Earth and just recently turned up.
00:31:43Do you know who any of these people are?
00:31:44No.
00:31:46Some of the pictures have names on, but most of them don't.
00:31:51I look at these faces, and I wonder who they are and if they could be related to me.
00:31:56Well, this one looks like you.
00:32:00Deanna...
00:32:03I have something on my mind.
00:32:05I had to see you.
00:32:07Has something happened?
00:32:10I've met someone-- someone who's becoming important to me.
00:32:18Soren.
00:32:19Yes.
00:32:21You're my friend, and I thought...
00:32:24I don't know, I thought I should tell you.
00:32:28I'm glad you did.
00:32:30Nothing will change between us, will it?
00:32:32Of course it will.
00:32:34All relationships are constantly changing.
00:32:39But we'll still be friends, maybe better friends.
00:32:45You're a part of my life, and I'm a part of yours.
00:32:48That much will always be true.
00:33:14Hello. I'm here to see Soren.
00:33:17I know.
00:33:20We had an appointment. We were going to discuss...
00:33:21I don't think so, Commander. Excuse me?
00:33:24We know about the two of you. We know what you're doing.
00:33:26Where is Soren? And we're going to make sure it doesn't happen again. Answer me-- where is Soren?
00:33:30In custody.
00:33:32And there's nothing you can do about it.
00:33:33The hell there isn't.
00:33:38You are aware of the charges against you?
00:33:42Yes.
00:33:43Do you intend to dispute them?
00:33:49Well?
00:33:51What is your response?
00:33:56Commander Riker, these proceedings are closed to everyone...
00:33:59I think I just opened them.
00:34:00Sir, this is a private matter.
00:34:02We are grateful for your recent help but that gives you no right to interfere with our personal concerns.
00:34:06I just want you to know what really happened.
00:34:08It was all my fault.
00:34:11I was attracted to Soren.
00:34:13I pursued.
00:34:15I insisted.
00:34:16I didn't understand your ways until she explained them to me and rejected me.
00:34:21Nothing happened between us.
00:34:23I ask your forgiveness.
00:34:26I behaved... inappropriately.
00:34:33Is this true?
00:34:37No.
00:34:38Soren.
00:34:42I am tired of lies.
00:34:48I am female.
00:34:51I was born that way.
00:34:54I have had those feelings... those longings... all of my life.
00:35:02It is not unnatural.
00:35:06I am not sick because I feel this way.
00:35:10I do not need to be helped.
00:35:14I do not need to be cured.
00:35:21What I need... and what all of those who are like me need... is your understanding... and your compassion.
00:35:38We have not injured you in any way.
00:35:43And yet we are scorned and attacked.
00:35:47And all because we are different.
00:35:49What we do is no different from what you do.
00:35:57We talk... and laugh.
00:36:04We complain about work.
00:36:08And we wonder about growing old.
00:36:11We talk about our families and we worry about the future.
00:36:18And we cry with each other when things seem hopeless.
00:36:24All of the loving things that you do with each other-- that is what we do.
00:36:33And for that, we are called misfits and deviants and criminals.
00:36:40What right do you have to punish us?
00:36:47What right do you have to change us?
00:36:52What makes you think you can dictate how people love each other?
00:37:09I congratulate you, Soren.
00:37:11Your decision to admit your perversion makes it much more likely that we can help you.
00:37:19Wait, wait, wait. You don't have to do this.
00:37:21Commander... Let me take her with me.
00:37:23She could go back to the Enterprise.
00:37:25We would give her asylum.
00:37:26You would never have to see her again.
00:37:28That would solve the problem, wouldn't it?
00:37:29You'd be rid of her!
00:37:31She would never be able to influence anyone again.
00:37:33Commander... after Soren's diatribe, you must think that we are a cruel, repressive people.
00:37:39Nothing could be further from the truth.
00:37:41I'm just trying to find a solution that would satisfy everyone.
00:37:44We're concerned about our citizens.
00:37:46We take our obligations to them seriously.
00:37:47Soren is sick, and sick people want to get well.
00:37:51Did it occur to you that she might like to stay the way she is?
00:37:54No, you don't understand.
00:37:56We have a very high success rate in treating deviants like this.
00:37:59And, without exception, they become happier people after their treatment, and grateful that we care enough to cure them.
00:38:08You see, Commander, on this world everyone wants to be normal.
00:38:14She is!
00:38:18Take Soren to quarters. Treatment will begin tomorrow.
00:38:20RIKER: Don't do this.
00:38:22Soren!
00:38:28No more, Commander.
00:38:30( crowd murmuring )
00:38:32Riker to Enterprise.
00:38:34One to transport.
00:38:43I can't just leave her there.
00:38:45They'll give her these psychotectic treatments.
00:38:47I don't know what to do!
00:38:54Well, I could talk to Noor.
00:38:58Perhaps there's a way to work something out.
00:39:01Sir, their minds are set.
00:39:03They don't want to hear another alternative.
00:39:05Then I'm not sure that there's much that we can do.
00:39:08There has to be.
00:39:10My relationship with Soren is not trivial.
00:39:13She's very important to me.
00:39:15It's my fault that this happened.
00:39:17I have to help her.
00:39:18Will, if you're here for sanction to take matters into your own hands
00:39:21I can't give it to you.
00:39:23I know that, but I have to do something.
00:39:26Interfering in the internal affairs of the J'naii is prohibited by the Prime Directive.
00:39:31I'm aware of that.
00:39:32If you violate it, you may be jeopardizing your career.
00:39:35Starfleet doesn't take these matters lightly, Will, and I can't defend you if you go too far.
00:39:40Do you understand?
00:39:42You've made yourself very clear, sir.
00:39:45Don't put at risk everything you've worked for.
00:39:48Thank you.
00:39:51May I be excused now?
00:39:54( sighs )
00:40:05( door chimes )
00:40:07Who is it?
00:40:08Lieutenant Worf.
00:40:12Come in.
00:40:19Commander, I have the plan for deploying warning buoys around the null space.
00:40:24Fine, leave it. I'll take a look at it later.
00:40:25Yes, sir.
00:40:30Thank you.
00:40:33You're dismissed.
00:40:35Commander, I am aware of what transpired on the planet's surface.
00:40:40Are you, by any chance, considering an... unannounced visit?
00:40:49I will go with you.
00:40:50Lieutenant...
00:40:52Sir, you are my commanding officer.
00:40:53If you order me to stay on board, I will obey, but I ask you not to give that order.
00:41:00A warrior does not let a friend face danger alone.
00:41:11RIKER: Something's happening.
00:41:12They're leaving.
00:41:27( murmuring voices )
00:41:41Okay.
00:41:44Excuse me.
00:41:45I need to speak to her alone for a moment.
00:41:47( grunting )
00:41:56Wait!
00:41:57Don't worry.
00:41:58We'll be out of here in a minute.
00:42:01Please don't.
00:42:02All right. We're almost there.
00:42:07You cannot do this.
00:42:09I won't let them hurt you.
00:42:10You'll be safe on the Enterprise.
00:42:12I am so sorry.
00:42:15It was my fault that you got involved in all this.
00:42:18Everything's going to be all right.
00:42:20Everything's going to be fine.
00:42:22No.
00:42:24It is not.
00:42:26What are you talking about?
00:42:28It was all a mistake... and I should have realized it from the beginning.
00:42:35What?
00:42:36That I was sick.
00:42:38I had these terrible urges and that is why I reached out to you.
00:42:44But it was wrong, and I see that now.
00:42:48I do not understand how I could have done what I did.
00:42:53Maybe Dr. Crusher could treat you and bring you back to the way you were.
00:42:59Why would I want that?
00:43:06Soren...
00:43:10I love you.
00:43:13I'm sorry.
00:43:27How long to the Phelan system, Mr. Data?
00:43:30At warp six, 53 hours, sir.
00:43:35Commander.
00:43:36Captain.
00:43:38Starfleet has sent a message asking us to proceed to the Phelan system to negotiate a trade agreement.
00:43:43Yes, sir.
00:43:45I didn't know when to tell them we would be there.
00:43:49Is our business with the J'naii finished?
00:43:53Finished, sir.
00:43:57Very well.
00:43:59Ensign, take us out of orbit.
00:44:00Set a course for the Phelan system.
00:44:02Warp six.
00:44:03ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:44:05PICARD: Engage.
