The First Duty
00:00:02Captain's Log, Stardate 45703.9.
00:00:05We are en route to Earth
00:00:07where it will be my pleasant duty to deliver
00:00:08this year's commencement address
00:00:10at Starfleet Academy.
00:00:12I'm also looking forward to seeing Wesley Crusher again.
00:00:14His flight team will perform a demonstration near Saturn
00:00:17that will be transmitted to the graduation ceremonies.
00:00:21Captain, Starfleet Academy is requesting an update on our estimated arrival.
00:00:26Mr. Data?
00:00:27We should be arriving at Earth in ten hours, 16 minutes, sir.
00:00:30Please inform the academy, Mr. Worf.
00:00:33And send my regards to Superintendent Brand.
00:00:35Aye, sir.
00:00:36TROI: Do you know Admiral Brand?
00:00:37We've met a few times.
00:00:39She's a formidable woman.
00:00:41Sounds like my superintendent.
00:00:43When I was at the academy, we had a Vulcan superintendent who had memorized the personnel files of every single cadet.
00:00:49Knew everything about them.
00:00:50It was like having your parents around all the time.
00:00:54My superintendent was a Betazoid-- a full telepath.
00:00:57When he sent for you to his office he didn't have to ask what you'd done.
00:01:01You got called to the superintendent's office?
00:01:04That's a story I'd like to hear.
00:01:05( console beeping )
00:01:06Sir? We are being hailed again by the academy.
00:01:10It is Admiral Brand.
00:01:11On screen.
00:01:13Sir, she is requesting a private channel.
00:01:17In my ready room.
00:01:26( com beeps )
00:01:28Admiral Brand, what can I do for you?
00:01:30Hello, Captain.
00:01:32I know you're a close friend of the Crusher family.
00:01:37Yes.
00:01:38I wanted to inform you personally.
00:01:41There's been an accident.
00:02:14Space, the final frontier.
00:02:18These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:02:22Its continuing mission--
00:02:24to explore strange new worlds...
00:02:28to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:02:33to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:02:38♪♪
00:03:39PICARD: He had second-degree burns on the chest and multiple fractures of his right arm but he's going to be fine.
00:03:44Have they completed the regeneration series?
00:03:46I'm not certain.
00:03:48Wesley's allergic to metorapan treatments.
00:03:51I think they'll have to use a bicaridine substitute.
00:03:55Beverly... I should send his complete records to the academy infirmary.
00:03:59Of course, they probably already have them but you can't be too sure.
00:04:01Beverly... he's fine.
00:04:05I know he's fine. I know he's fine.
00:04:09How did it happen?
00:04:12Apparently, his squadron was practicing on the academy flight range near Saturn.
00:04:19They were flying a close formation.
00:04:22There was a collision.
00:04:24All five ships were destroyed.
00:04:26Four of the cadets were able to transport out.
00:04:28One didn't make it.
00:04:30Do you know who it was?
00:04:32Yes, his name was Joshua Albert.
00:04:36Wesley spoke of him.
00:04:37They were friends.
00:04:40Wesley was so excited to make the flight team.
00:04:44Of course, I was a little nervous but I was proud.
00:04:48I always knew there was a chance that something like this might...
00:04:53Beverly?
00:04:54Wesley is alive, and he's well.
00:05:11There was very little to salvage from the wreckage.
00:05:13We did recover one of the ship's data recorders but it was badly damaged.
00:05:18We are attempting to restore the information but that will take some time.
00:05:25Standard procedure calls for an immediate investigation by two command-level officers.
00:05:31Captain Satelk and I will be taking depositions from Nova Squadron at 1500 hours today.
00:05:41Commander Albert...
00:05:44I'm sure that everyone in this room joins me in expressing my deepest sympathies to you on the tragic loss of your son.
00:05:54There will be a memorial service for Cadet Albert this evening in the west garden.
00:06:01It has been suggested that we should cancel the graduation ceremonies in the light of what's happened.
00:06:07Commander Albert and I have discussed this and we've agreed that commencement should go forward as planned.
00:06:13The cadets should know that even after a tragedy like this there are still duties to perform... and life continues.
00:06:23Thank you all for coming.
00:06:37It's good to see you again, Captain.
00:06:40I wish it were under better circumstances.
00:06:43This is an unhappy way to begin commencement.
00:06:46If you require any assistance then the Enterprise is at your disposal.
00:06:51I'm sure we'll be able to conduct the investigation, but thank you for your offer.
00:07:07( knock at door )
00:07:15Wes.
00:07:16Oh...
00:07:18( sighs )
00:07:20I was so worried about you.
00:07:22How are you feeling, Wesley?
00:07:23Not bad.
00:07:25The arm's a little sore.
00:07:32We were very sorry to hear about Joshua.
00:07:36Would you like to talk about it?
00:07:38No. I don't think so.
00:07:41No, thank you.
00:07:45I know you're just trying to be helpful, sir but it seems like that's all I've talked about for the last two days.
00:07:50And I don't want to go through it again.
00:07:52I understand. I just want you to know that I'm available if you should change your mind.
00:07:56Thank you, sir.
00:07:57( knock at door )
00:08:03Hi.
00:08:04Hi.
00:08:06Captain, sir.
00:08:07At ease, Cadet.
00:08:09This is my squadron leader, Nicholas Locarno.
00:08:11This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Enterprise.
00:08:13My mother, Dr. Beverly Crusher.
00:08:14Hello, Doctor.
00:08:15Hello.
00:08:17Captain Picard.
00:08:18Mr. Locarno.
00:08:19I came by to see if Wes had healed up all right.
00:08:23And how are you feeling, Nicholas?
00:08:26Oh, I'm okay.
00:08:28I just never lost anyone under my command before.
00:08:33I'm afraid that never gets easier.
00:08:37Captain, mom... will you excuse us, please?
00:08:43Nick and I have some things we need to talk about.
00:08:47Of course.
00:08:57Let me know if you need anything.
00:08:59I will.
00:09:00We'll see you at the inquiry.
00:09:02Good to meet you, Mr. Locarno.
00:09:04You, too, sir.
00:09:11The inquiry is scheduled for 1500 hours.
00:09:14Are you ready?
00:09:16I think so.
00:09:18Look, don't worry about it, Wes.
00:09:21Everything is going to be all right as long as we stick together.
00:09:37MAN 1: Hey, can't you see that's a flower bed?!
00:09:40MAN 2: Sorry. I'm really sorry.
00:09:41Oh, come on.
00:09:48( groans )
00:09:50( sighs )
00:09:56Boothby.
00:09:57Mm-hmm?
00:10:02Jean-Luc Picard, class of '27.
00:10:05I know that.
00:10:07What happened to your hair?
00:10:12How are you?
00:10:13I'm pretty damn cranky, thank you.
00:10:15I've already replanted this bed four times this week.
00:10:20Let me give you a hand.
00:10:23You?
00:10:24I've acquired an interest over the years.
00:10:27Well... don't plant them too deep.
00:10:30The stems will...
00:10:31Will rot.
00:10:35Captain Picard.
00:10:38Of the Enterprise, no less.
00:10:41And giving the commencement address.
00:10:43You sound surprised.
00:10:44Surprised?
00:10:45Uh-uh.
00:10:47Nothing you ever did surprised me, son.
00:10:50Except that time you caught that Ligonian with a reverse body lift and pinned him in the first
00:10:5614 seconds of the match.
00:10:58Didn't think you had it in you.
00:10:59Well, it was all in the legs.
00:11:02All that running I did.
00:11:03( chuckles )
00:11:07Boothby...
00:11:08Hmm?
00:11:11I don't think that I ever...
00:11:15I don't think I ever told you... how much I appreciate...
00:11:20Mm-mm. There's nothing to tell.
00:11:24Yes, there is.
00:11:27I... I just wanted to... while I was here...
00:11:33Look, you know as well as I do
00:11:34I would never have graduated, if you...
00:11:36You made a mistake.
00:11:38There isn't a man among us who hasn't been young enough to make one.
00:11:42Nevertheless...
00:11:43You did what you had to do.
00:11:44You did what you thought was best.
00:11:46I just made sure that you listened to yourself.
00:11:51At the time, I thought you were a mean-spirited, vicious old man.
00:11:57I was.
00:11:58And by the way
00:12:00I was about the same age you are now.
00:12:04I didn't speak to you for months.
00:12:06You needed to get your bearings.
00:12:08I knew that.
00:12:11The important thing is what you did with your life afterwards.
00:12:15It seems you did okay.
00:12:18That's thanks enough for me.
00:12:21Did you know the boy from Nova Squadron who was killed?
00:12:26Josh Albert?
00:12:27Yeah.
00:12:29Crusher, Hajar,
00:12:31Sito, Locarno--
00:12:35I know them all.
00:12:49( sighs )
00:12:51You nervous?
00:12:52No.
00:12:55Yes.
00:12:57That's okay. So am I.
00:13:00But we're going to be all right.
00:13:02We've got some tough times ahead but we've always come through for each other.
00:13:06Whatever happens, I want you all to know that leading this team has been the high point of my years at the academy.
00:13:13No one could have asked for a better team.
00:13:16Or better friends.
00:13:19Let's go.
00:13:27LOCARNO: At this point, we accelerated and executed a starboard turn of 27 degrees.
00:13:31We came out of the turn on course for Titan.
00:13:34And you were still in the lead position?
00:13:36Yes, sir.
00:13:37Continue.
00:13:39As we entered Titan's gravitational sphere
00:13:41I gave the signal to tighten up and move into a diamond slot formation.
00:13:45Remaining in the diamond formation we executed a low-apogee turn around Titan and began a z-plus 25 degree climb in preparation for a Yeager Loop.
00:13:54Approximately nine seconds later
00:13:58Cadet Albert's ship collided with Cadet Hajar's.
00:14:01We had less than two seconds to activate our emergency transporters and beam to the EVAC stations at Mimas.
00:14:06Everyone made it except Josh.
00:14:11Thank you, Mr. Locarno.
00:14:22BRAND: Cadet Hajar.
00:14:26As team navigator you filed a flight plan with the academy range officer before the exercise, correct?
00:14:33Yes, sir.
00:14:35Did Nova Squadron deviate from that flight plan after you entered the Saturn range?
00:14:42No, sir.
00:14:43And how do you explain the fact that the low-apogee turn around Titan was at least 2,000 kilometers closer to the moon than indicated in your plan?
00:14:54We were still within flight safety parameters, sir.
00:14:59That was not my question, Cadet.
00:15:02( clears throat )
00:15:04We had discussed changing our approach after I filed the flight plan.
00:15:08The final decision was made en route to Saturn.
00:15:10I didn't consider it significant enough to mention here.
00:15:14I apologize for the confusion, sir.
00:15:17I should have been more precise.
00:15:19( audience murmuring )
00:15:22Did you see Mr. Albert's ship break formation before it collided with your ship?
00:15:27No, sir.
00:15:29My first indications of trouble were when my proximity alarm went off.
00:15:33You may be seated.
00:15:35Did any of you see the collision take place?
00:15:39No, sir.
00:15:43Cadet Sito... you were in the tail position.
00:15:47Therefore you should have seen any sign of trouble from Cadet Albert.
00:15:51And you saw nothing?
00:15:52That is correct, sir.
00:15:55Did your attention falter?
00:15:57No, sir.
00:15:59I was flying solely on sensor readings at the time.
00:16:02I did not have any visual contact with Cadet Albert's ship when he broke formation.
00:16:07( quietly ): Sensor readings?
00:16:10( agitated murmuring )
00:16:13What's wrong?
00:16:14Well, it's unusual to fly on sensors alone during this type of maneuver.
00:16:19A pilot relies on visual clues from the other ships to maintain formation.
00:16:23( rings bell )
00:16:25( whispering stops )
00:16:27If you were flying on sensors alone perhaps you could tell us the orientation of his ship before the collision.
00:16:36I don't know, sir.
00:16:38You were flying a ship traveling 80,000 kph with Cadet Albert's ship less than ten meters away and you don't know what his orientation was?
00:16:50I don't remember, sir.
00:16:53Sir, may I?
00:16:54BRAND: Go ahead.
00:16:58Admiral...
00:17:01( sighs )
00:17:02Josh was a good pilot but lately he'd been having difficulties.
00:17:07He'd get nervous during close flybys and pull away in the final seconds.
00:17:12His formation flying was a little erratic.
00:17:15And you didn't report this to anyone?
00:17:18No, sir, I didn't.
00:17:20We'd flown together a long time.
00:17:22I thought he could handle it if I gave him a chance.
00:17:27I was wrong.
00:17:29BRAND: Then you are saying that the accident was Cadet Albert's fault.
00:17:37I think Josh got frightened and tried to pull out of the turn prematurely and then crashed into Cadet Hajar.
00:17:47Josh was our friend.
00:17:50We didn't want him to be remembered as someone who panicked.
00:17:56Please be seated.
00:18:03I am very disturbed by what I have heard here today.
00:18:06By your own admission you allowed your teammate to fly when you knew he was having difficulties maintaining formation.
00:18:17That demonstrates a serious lack of judgment.
00:18:20I am also disturbed by the fact that you did not come forward with this information immediately.
00:18:26We should have the first data from Mr. Crusher's flight recorder tonight.
00:18:31We will reconvene at 1300 hours tomorrow.
00:18:45Everything's fine.
00:18:46Trust me.
00:18:59LA FORGE: I don't know, Captain.
00:19:00The academy has one of the best reconstructive analysis labs in Starfleet.
00:19:04I'm not sure there's much we could contribute to the investigation.
00:19:06Yes, that may well be... but Wesley's one of our own.
00:19:13Understood, sir. We'll get right on it.
00:19:15Good. I've spoken with Admiral Brand, and she's agreed to allow us access to all of the physical evidence and testimony.
00:19:22Thank you, gentlemen.
00:19:26You shouldn't have said it, Nick.
00:19:28Josh wasn't responsible for what happened.
00:19:30I had to do something.
00:19:32You said that we weren't going to have to lie to them.
00:19:34We all agreed not to lie to them.
00:19:37I didn't lie.
00:19:39Everything I said was the truth.
00:19:40The accident was not Josh's fault.
00:19:43Look, he was my friend, too, Wes.
00:19:46I worked to get him on this team but the truth is, he panicked.
00:19:49We don't know that.
00:19:51Of course, we do.
00:19:53None of us has wanted to say it out loud but we've all had the same thought.
00:19:58Haven't we?
00:20:04He must have pulled away too soon.
00:20:07I think he got scared.
00:20:11Sito?
00:20:19Wes, I know you want to protect his memory-- we all do-- but we have to look out for ourselves now.
00:20:24What do you want us to do?
00:20:26Walk in there and tell them everything that happened?
00:20:28We might as well turn in our uniforms and start packing our bags.
00:20:31Are we ready for that?
00:20:38We'll take this one step at a time.
00:20:41This is the preliminary report from your flight recorder.
00:20:44It was damaged so badly in the crash that the lab could only retrieve a third of the total telemetry from the recorder.
00:20:50And all of it is before the collision.
00:20:54There's no problem here.
00:20:59I don't know if I can do this, Nick.
00:21:03SITO: You don't have to lie.
00:21:05Just don't volunteer any new information.
00:21:13The first night I met you, Wes
00:21:16I knew I wanted you on this squad.
00:21:18You, more than any of the rest would understand what it means to be able to count on someone
00:21:23'cause you've been out there, putting yourself on the line.
00:21:28You know you've got to be able to count on the people on your team because your life is in their hands and their lives are in yours.
00:21:37We made a promise to each other, right in the beginning that we'd stick together.
00:21:43We were Nova Squadron.
00:21:44Nobody else could say that.
00:21:46And even after we graduated we'd try to get posted on the same duty.
00:21:50We were going to be a team for a long time.
00:21:58Josh can't be a part of those plans anymore but I think he would still want us to be a team.
00:22:06What do you think?
00:22:24Mr. Crusher.
00:22:27Sir.
00:22:28At ease.
00:22:34Am I interrupting?
00:22:35No. I was just going over my deposition for tomorrow.
00:22:39They told me you'd be here.
00:22:42I found this in Josh's room.
00:22:45I think it belongs to you.
00:22:47Our ski trip.
00:22:52Josh and I went to Calgary last month.
00:22:54He forgot his sweater, so he borrowed one of mine.
00:22:59He told me you helped him with his classes.
00:23:02A little.
00:23:04He only needed help in statistical mechanics.
00:23:07If Josh had a weakness, it was mathematics.
00:23:09No, he could do it.
00:23:11He just didn't like to.
00:23:15His mother and I thought he'd never get out of calculus.
00:23:19Then he found out what the academy entrance requirements were like and... that turned him around.
00:23:27He stayed after class got a tutor.
00:23:33He really worked hard.
00:23:38He never gave up on anything.
00:23:42And he had a lot of respect for you and everybody on the team.
00:23:49I realize it was his fault... and everybody could have been killed.
00:23:59And I want to say that, uh...
00:24:04I want to say I'm sorry.
00:24:08I'm sorry that he let you down.
00:24:30BRAND: Are you ready, Mr. Crusher?
00:24:34Yes, sir.
00:24:41This is the beginning of our run toward Titan.
00:24:43I'm on the right wing.
00:24:44Where is Mr. Albert at this point?
00:24:46He was on my port quarter approximately 50 meters away.
00:24:51We've just received the signal to begin the diamond slot formation.
00:24:54That's Cadet Locarno coming into view now.
00:24:58We're in a 20-degree turn around Titan.
00:25:04We should be coming out of Titan's gravity well about now.
00:25:08LOCARNO ( over com ): Okay, people, follow me in.
00:25:12BRAND: That is the extent of the data we were able to recover from the flight recorder.
00:25:17Mr. Crusher, would you describe what happened after you left orbit of Titan?
00:25:24Once we cleared the moon
00:25:28Mr. Locarno led us into a Yeager Loop.
00:25:30Approximately nine seconds later my proximity alarm went off.
00:25:34I tried to veer away, but it was too late, and I was hit.
00:25:38I lost control of my ship.
00:25:40A power coupling exploded in my cockpit.
00:25:43I don't know how but I managed to activate my escape transporter.
00:25:49And the next thing I remember is finding myself on the emergency EVAC station on Mimas with the rest of the squadron-- except Josh.
00:26:01Do you have anything to add to your testimony?
00:26:04No, sir.
00:26:08Mr. Crusher, will you describe a Yeager Loop.
00:26:14The ships begin in a diamond slot formation and climb and loop backwards at a steep angle and at the peak of the loop turn over and accelerate in a new direction.
00:26:26Mr. Crusher, did your team remain in formation throughout the loop?
00:26:32Yes, sir.
00:26:34I want you to be absolutely clear on this point, Mr. Crusher.
00:26:38Before the collision, was Nova Squadron in a diamond slot formation?
00:26:45Yes, sir.
00:26:47Computer, display Saturn NAVCON file
00:26:516-379.
00:26:55These images were obtained from a navigational control satellite in orbit around Saturn during a standard sensor sweep.
00:27:02Computer, freeze image.
00:27:04Magnify sector Gamma Three and enhance.
00:27:16This image was recorded when your ships moved briefly into the satellite's sensor range.
00:27:20According to the time index, what you see on the monitor took place seven seconds after Nova Squadron completed the Yeager Loop.
00:27:33Mr. Crusher, are these ships in a diamond slot formation?
00:27:40No, sir.
00:27:42What is your explanation, Mr. Crusher?
00:27:51I have none, sir.
00:28:00Everything's going to be okay, Wesley.
00:28:03There must be an explanation for all of this.
00:28:05Data and Geordi are already analyzing the flight recorder and the satellite transmission.
00:28:10Why?
00:28:12Well, there must be something wrong with the satellite data.
00:28:15It might have been tampered with.
00:28:16Mom...
00:28:17Well, there must be some explanation for this.
00:28:20I know you're telling the truth but the satellite data made it look as if you were lying.
00:28:25I've spoken with the other parents.
00:28:30I am going to talk to Admiral Brand and ask her to delay the inquiry...
00:28:33Mom.
00:28:35Don't.
00:28:37You can't do that.
00:28:38I'm not going to let them ruin your career, Wesley.
00:28:41You haven't done anything wrong.
00:28:45Mom... don't try to protect me.
00:28:52Please stay out of this.
00:29:06Ah... the weeds keep popping up in the pittosporum.
00:29:11Poor plants don't have a chance to grow.
00:29:13You could use a good herbicide instead of pulling the weeds with your bare hands.
00:29:17Mm-hmm, and you could explore space on a holodeck instead of a starship.
00:29:25Boothby, tell me some more about Nova Squadron.
00:29:31Not going well, is it?
00:29:32No, it isn't.
00:29:35You remember the parrises squares tournament of '24?
00:29:41The final game against Minsk...
00:29:43It took me three weeks to repair the grounds after the celebration.
00:29:47We had a lot to celebrate.
00:29:49Our team wasn't supposed to win.
00:29:51We were very proud of them.
00:29:54Well, the cadets today are just as proud of the Nova Squadron.
00:29:58The celebration they held after Nova won the Rigel Cup made '24 look like a dinner party.
00:30:03To the other cadets the members of that team are gods and that's a hard image to live up to.
00:30:09But Nick Locarno-- he watches out for them.
00:30:12He keeps them together.
00:30:14Nick is what makes that team special.
00:30:17He's their coach, surrogate father and best friend, all in one.
00:30:21A natural leader.
00:30:24The members of that team love him.
00:30:26If he asks them to do something, they do it even if it means going right over a cliff.
00:30:51Report.
00:30:52Nothing conclusive.
00:30:54We do know that the collision occurred about four seconds after the satellite images were recorded.
00:30:58But we still don't know how the ships got into the new formation or why the crash occurred.
00:31:02We unsuccessfully tried
00:31:0453 different computational models in an effort to simulate the movements of the Nova Squadron just prior to the crash.
00:31:10There are just too many variables to take into consideration-- speed, attitude, course...
00:31:15Did Wesley's flight recorder indicate that there was anything unusual about the ship, or the way it was operating?
00:31:20Well, the starboard power flow was fluctuating.
00:31:23However, it was well within operational limits.
00:31:27LA FORGE: Fluidic pressure in the landing struts was low, but I don't know what difference that would make.
00:31:31We did find that Wesley opened his coolant interlock just before beginning the maneuver around Titan.
00:31:37That is a bit unusual.
00:31:38Normally, the interlock is closed unless you're performing a check on the engine coolant levels.
00:31:42But there's no evidence that Wesley was performing that sort of a check.
00:31:47Filling the primary coolant tanks requires an open interlock but that can only be performed at a maintenance bay.
00:31:51Is there any other reason for opening the valve?
00:31:54Well, it's the first step in purging the plasma exhaust.
00:31:57That procedure would be extremely hazardous while the ship was in flight.
00:32:01Yeah, the engine would probably ignite the plasma.
00:32:05Ignite the plasma...
00:32:08That's exactly what they were trying to do.
00:32:21( door chimes )
00:32:23Come.
00:32:28Captain.
00:32:31Can you tell me what this maneuver is?
00:32:43It's a Kolvoord Starburst, sir.
00:32:47Five ships crossing within ten meters of each other and igniting their plasma trails.
00:32:54It's one of the most spectacular and difficult demonstrations in precision flying.
00:33:01And it hasn't been performed at the academy for over 100 years.
00:33:04Do you know why?
00:33:08It was banned by the academy following a training accident, sir.
00:33:11An accident in which all five cadets lost their lives.
00:33:26I think that Nicholas Locarno wanted to end his academy career in a blaze of glory and that he convinced the four of you to learn the Kolvoord Starburst for the commencement demonstration.
00:33:39If it worked, it would thrill the assembled guests and Locarno would graduate as a living legend.
00:33:48Only it didn't work.
00:33:52And Joshua Albert paid the price.
00:33:55Am I correct?
00:34:00Cadet, I asked you a question.
00:34:01Am I correct?
00:34:05I choose not to answer, sir.
00:34:09You choose not to answer?
00:34:18But you've already given an answer to the inquiry.
00:34:21That answer was a lie.
00:34:23I said the accident occurred after the loop.
00:34:25It did.
00:34:27What you neglected to mention was that following the loop your team attempted a maneuver that was the direct cause of the crash.
00:34:36Oh, you told the truth, up to a point.
00:34:40But a lie of omission is still a lie.
00:34:50Do you remember the first day you came aboard this ship?
00:34:54Your mother brought you on the bridge.
00:34:57Yes, sir.
00:34:58You even sat in my chair.
00:35:00I was annoyed.
00:35:02A presumptuous child playing on my ship?
00:35:06But I never forgot how you already knew every control, every display.
00:35:11You behaved as though you belonged on the bridge.
00:35:14And then later, when I decided to make you an acting ensign
00:35:18I was convinced you could be an outstanding officer.
00:35:20And I never questioned that conviction... until now.
00:35:30The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth-- whether it's scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth.
00:35:37It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based.
00:35:40Now, if you can't find it within yourself to stand up and tell the truth about what happened you don't deserve to wear that uniform.
00:35:46I'm going to make this simple for you, Mr. Crusher.
00:35:49Either you come forward and tell Admiral Brand what really took place, or I will.
00:35:55( whispers ): Captain... Dismissed!
00:36:12( knock on door )
00:36:15Your message said it was urgent.
00:36:17They know, Nick.
00:36:19They know what we did.
00:36:20Calm down. Calm down.
00:36:23Now, tell me exactly what happened.
00:36:26Captain Picard called me onto the Enterprise.
00:36:28When I got there, he told me that he knows.
00:36:31The Kolvoord Maneuver, the cover-up, everything.
00:36:33He said that if I didn't come forward and tell the truth now, he would.
00:36:40You said he figured it out. Does he have any evidence?
00:36:41No, but he knew exactly how it happened.
00:36:46Captain Picard doesn't know anything.
00:36:48He has a theory.
00:36:50So, let him tell the inquiry what he thinks happened.
00:36:52They'll ask us, "Is it true?" We'll say, "No, sir."
00:36:55There's no evidence, so there's no case.
00:36:57We'll get off with a reprimand.
00:37:00I can't call Captain Picard a liar.
00:37:02Wesley...
00:37:05We have to hang on just a little bit longer.
00:37:09Then this will all be over.
00:37:12It's wrong, Nick.
00:37:14Wesley...
00:37:15No.
00:37:22I'm going to tell them what happened.
00:37:28You're going to tell them what happened?
00:37:31You...
00:37:32Alone...
00:37:34Are going to decide what happens to me to Sito, to Jean?
00:37:38You're going to decide that?
00:37:39I'm not going to lie to them again, Nick.
00:37:43I can't live with it.
00:37:46You can't lie to them.
00:37:48You can't live with this.
00:37:49You have to tell them what happened.
00:37:51Who the hell are you?
00:37:52Nick!
00:37:53You're going to turn us in!
00:37:54Now, wait a minute...
00:37:55No, you wait a minute!
00:38:05He got to you, didn't he?
00:38:07Picard told you some big story about duty and honor.
00:38:15Well, it must have been a pretty good speech to make you turn your back on your friends.
00:38:21We're Starfleet cadets.
00:38:24We have a duty to the truth.
00:38:25What about your duty to your friends?
00:38:28I got you on this team.
00:38:31I gave you a chance when there were upperclassmen waiting in line.
00:38:34I said, "He won't let us down.
00:38:37"He was on the Enterprise.
00:38:40He knows what it's like to trust somebody with his life."
00:38:44Well, I guess I was wrong.
00:38:46If we all come forward together and tell Admiral Brand...
00:38:49We don't want to come forward.
00:38:52Sito, Jean and me-- we don't have a problem with this.
00:38:55But, if you do, then resign your appointment to the academy and walk away.
00:39:01Don't make us pay for your guilty conscience.
00:39:04You'd let me do that?
00:39:06You'd let me throw away my career just to save your neck?
00:39:10To save the team.
00:39:13That's more important than you, and it's more important than me.
00:39:17And if I were in your place
00:39:18I'd do it, without hesitation.
00:39:21But that's me.
00:39:37BRAND: Captain Satelk and I have gone over your testimony and the physical evidence from the crash.
00:39:43Your statements cannot be reconciled with the data collected from the NAVCON satellite.
00:39:51Your unwillingness to offer any explanation for this contradiction is disappointing and raises suspicion.
00:40:01We cannot escape the conclusion that either the data is faulty in some way... or you have lied to us.
00:40:13However, suspicion is not proof and I have no proof that you have lied to this inquiry.
00:40:22Therefore, if no further evidence is presented,
00:40:27I have no choice but to close this investigation.
00:40:43For filing an inaccurate flight plan and for allowing Cadet Albert to fly when you knew he was having difficulties
00:40:51I'm ordering a formal reprimand placed on each of your permanent records.
00:40:58I'm also revoking your flight privileges.
00:41:03This inquiry is closed.
00:41:05( bell rings )
00:41:06Sir?
00:41:09I would like to add something to my testimony.
00:41:13Proceed, Mr. Crusher.
00:41:17Yesterday, I testified that the crash occurred following a Yeager Loop.
00:41:21That is not entirely true.
00:41:25We performed a loop, and afterwards broke formation and attempted a Kolvoord Starburst.
00:41:32( audience murmuring )
00:41:35We knew it was prohibited.
00:41:37We knew it was dangerous but we wanted to do something spectacular for the commencement demonstration.
00:41:45We pushed Josh into it, and he wasn't ready.
00:41:49We thought we could do it.
00:41:52We thought we could do anything.
00:41:55We were wrong... and Josh died.
00:42:03Josh didn't let us down, sir.
00:42:06It wasn't his fault.
00:42:09Mr. Locarno... you are the leader of Nova Squadron.
00:42:16Do you have anything to say?
00:42:24Mr. Locarno?
00:42:36No, sir.
00:42:54Mr. Locarno has been expelled.
00:42:59They should have expelled all of us.
00:43:01They very nearly did.
00:43:03Mr. Locarno made an impassioned plea for the rest of you.
00:43:07He said that he'd used his influence as squadron leader to convince you to attempt the Kolvoord Maneuver and then to cover up the truth.
00:43:15He asked to take full responsibility.
00:43:20He did exactly what he said he would.
00:43:23He protected the team.
00:43:26I feel awful.
00:43:29I've let down everyone-- my mother, my friends, you.
00:43:34You should feel bad.
00:43:37And you will pay for what you've done.
00:43:41Admiral Brand has decided that in addition to a formal reprimand your academic credits for the past year will be canceled and you will not advance with your class.
00:43:51I understand.
00:43:54It's not going to be easy staying here on campus... everyone knowing what you did.
00:44:04You have difficult times ahead.
00:44:08Yes, sir.
00:44:10Thank you, Captain.
00:44:14You knew what you had to do.
00:44:17I just made sure that you listened to yourself.
00:44:24Good-bye, Cadet.
00:44:25Good-bye, Captain.
00:44:38♪♪
