Imaginary Friend
00:00:09I like to cook all kinds of stuff-- like yogurt and raisin salad, chocolate chip pancakes, and purple omelets.
00:00:18Purple omelets?
00:00:20You put grape juice in the eggs.
00:00:22Isabella doesn't like it very much.
00:00:24She says it tastes funny.
00:00:25I can see her point.
00:00:28Would you like some sugar with your tea?
00:00:30Yes, please.
00:00:33Isabella, would you like some?
00:00:37Yes, but she takes two cubes.
00:00:39Mm-hmm.
00:00:44I'll bet Isabella is very pretty.
00:00:46She's very, very pretty.
00:00:48She has blonde hair and a blue dress with white buttons.
00:00:52Her ears are pierced and she's tall.
00:00:57Maybe you could draw me a picture.
00:00:58I'd love to see what she looks like.
00:01:01You don't think she's real.
00:01:03I think she's real for you, and that is real enough for me.
00:01:09Honey, I think it's time for you to go now.
00:01:11You don't wanna keep Keiko waiting.
00:01:14I have to go plant the nasturtiums now.
00:01:16I'm Keiko's helper in the arboretum today.
00:01:18Is that so?
00:01:20You go ahead, sweetie, and be home in time for dinner.
00:01:24I hope I see you soon.
00:01:27Maybe we can be friends.
00:01:28Okay.
00:01:33Counselor Troi?
00:01:35Yes?
00:01:36Isabella says she likes you.
00:01:38Why, thank you, Isabella.
00:01:48I can understand your concern, Ensign Sutter, but really, you have nothing to worry about.
00:01:53It's a normal, healthy activity for children to engage in imaginary play.
00:01:57I'm-- I'm just afraid she's not making any real friends.
00:02:01She spends all of her time with Isabella.
00:02:04You've been moving from starship to starship since Clara was two years old.
00:02:09Maybe Isabella provides a constant companion.
00:02:12She knows this is one friend she won't have to leave behind.
00:02:16You're probably right.
00:02:18Give Clara a chance.
00:02:20Once she learns to make new friends on the Enterprise, you'll probably find that she'll leave her imaginary world behind.
00:02:30Captain's Log, Stardate 45852.1.
00:02:33The Enterprise has arrived at FGC-47--
00:02:37a nebula which has formed around a neutron star.
00:02:40We are eager to investigate this unique formation.
00:02:44We've got elevated quantities of hydrogen, helium and trionium, but nothing the shields can't handle.
00:02:48Shields up. Take us in, Ensign.
00:02:50One-quarter impulse.
00:02:52Aye, sir.
00:03:03In order for the lateral sensors to complete their scheduled observations, additional processing time will be required.
00:03:08We could steal a couple of hours from the engineering team while they're recalibrating the thermal interferometry scanner.
00:03:13Will two hours be enough time to complete the high-resolution series on the neutron star? No problem.
00:03:17We'll just double up the main sensor bandwidth while they're freeing up the lateral units.
00:03:21Hmm.
00:03:26And then after dinner, then what?
00:03:28We went to the holodeck and took a walk on the Champs Elysees.
00:03:34The neural scanner still seems to be a bit off.
00:03:36Let's check the sensor calibrations.
00:03:38I'll run a diagnostic.
00:03:48And...?
00:03:49And?
00:03:50After Paris?
00:03:53He has shore leave next month.
00:03:54He asked me to go to Risa with him.
00:03:57No problem, Nurse McClukidge can cover for you.
00:03:59I don't think I'm going, Doctor.
00:04:01I hear it's a very uninhibited atmosphere.
00:04:03Personally, I don't think I'm ready for that kind of "fun."
00:04:08Try to talk him into Tavela Minor.
00:04:10They have a cruise down the Jokri River.
00:04:11The iridescent currents are beautiful.
00:04:18( giggles )
00:04:37See, Isabella?
00:04:39You have to stick your finger into the soil as far as it can go.
00:04:44We're making a hole for the seeds.
00:04:49Now, they need to be watered.
00:04:52But the baby seeds are very small, so we mustn't give them too much to drink.
00:04:58( Clara humming Old MacDonald Had A Farm)
00:05:15( continues humming )
00:05:21( another girl humming along )
00:05:24Hello?
00:05:26Is anybody there?
00:05:33GIRL: Hello.
00:05:35Isabella?
00:05:37Hello, Clara.
00:06:08Space, the final frontier.
00:06:13These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:06:17Its continuing mission--
00:06:19to explore strange new worlds,
00:06:22to seek out new life and new civilizations,
00:06:27to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:07:29Isabella, how come I can see you?
00:07:32Is something wrong with the way I look?
00:07:35No. It's just I've never seen you before.
00:07:39Not for real.
00:07:40Well, now, you can see me for real.
00:07:43Doesn't that make you happy?
00:07:45Yes. It's wonderful.
00:07:48Can we go now?
00:07:50We better finish planting the seeds first.
00:07:53I'm tired of planting.
00:07:54Let's do something else.
00:07:56Like what?
00:07:58Like... I would really like to explore the ship.
00:08:02We better finish planting first.
00:08:05I promised Keiko.
00:08:06We can finish later. Let's go look around.
00:08:10I better ask my daddy.
00:08:11Your daddy won't mind.
00:08:13We can tell him later. Come on.
00:08:20So, what are we gonna call this nebula?
00:08:23"FGC-47" just doesn't have the proper ring to it.
00:08:25Why don't we call it "Sutter's Cloud"?
00:08:27( chuckles )
00:08:29The rotational period of the neutron star is 1.35 seconds.
00:08:32That's a bit on the long side. Sutter, see if you can get a reading on the particle flux.
00:08:36Aye, sir.
00:08:37No, I was thinking about something more along the lines of the "La Forge Nebula."
00:08:42It's got sort of a majestic sound, don't you think?
00:08:44Given the selections, I prefer FGC-47.
00:08:52What was that?
00:08:53It felt like we hit something.
00:08:55Shields have registered an impact.
00:08:56However, sensors show nothing in the vicinity.
00:09:00Forward velocity is down by .2% and dropping.
00:09:04Engineering, report.
00:09:06There could be something wrong with the shields, Captain.
00:09:08We're checking it out now.
00:09:11Systems are normal, sir.
00:09:12So, did we hit something or not?
00:09:14Shields say yes.
00:09:16Sensors say no.
00:09:20This is very strange.
00:09:23Ensign, give me a breakdown on the shield energy conversion and then run a spectral-- whoa!
00:09:28Where did you come from?
00:09:30I'm Clara Sutter. That's my daddy.
00:09:34( sighs )
00:09:36Clara, you can't be here right now.
00:09:39But Isabella wanted to see Engineering.
00:09:41I-- I don't care what Isabella wanted to see.
00:09:43You go back to our quarters right now.
00:09:45But, Daddy--
00:09:46PICARD: Bridge to La Forge.
00:09:47Our speed is still dropping.
00:09:48LA FORGE: I hear you, Captain.
00:09:49I'm increasing the power to the impulse engines but forward velocity just isn't consistent with engine output.
00:09:54PICARD: Explanation.
00:09:55It seems like there's something increasing the drag coefficient on the ship, but we can't find the source.
00:10:00If we can't correct it, we may have to reverse course and leave the nebula.
00:10:03Give me a couple of minutes here, Captain.
00:10:06Clara, now.
00:10:10I'm sorry, Commander.
00:10:17Why do you keep disappearing like that?
00:10:19The grown-ups don't believe I'm real.
00:10:22When they're around, I have to be invisible.
00:10:28Wait here.
00:10:35The drag coefficient continues to increase.
00:10:38Our velocity has fallen by 12%.
00:10:40( console beeping )
00:10:43Velocity is increasing.
00:10:48The ship's speed has stabilized at one-quarter impulse.
00:10:50That's great, Data. What did you do?
00:10:52I did nothing.
00:10:54The problem seems to have corrected itself.
00:11:01Where did you go?
00:11:02There was something I had to do.
00:11:12I don't have an explanation, Captain.
00:11:14We seemed to hit something, then we started losing speed.
00:11:16But, so far as we can tell, there's nothing out there to hit.
00:11:19Could some sort of damping field have caused us to lose velocity?
00:11:22No. We have simulated several such fields, but were unable to reproduce the same drag coefficient.
00:11:27And we still don't know why the problem suddenly corrected itself.
00:11:30Seems we're looking at a unique phenomenon.
00:11:32One that hasn't been recorded before.
00:11:34The question is-- do we stay here and check it out?
00:11:37Might be dangerous.
00:11:38DATA: Since we have only experienced the phenomenon once, it is impossible to estimate the risks.
00:11:43Captain, I'd like to stay here for a little bit, collect some samples of the gaseous matter, see what it tells us.
00:11:50Agreed. Collect your samples, Mr. La Forge.
00:11:53We'll proceed with caution.
00:11:55Dismissed.
00:12:02What's in here?
00:12:04That's the door to the cargo bay.
00:12:06We can't go in there.
00:12:11Let's go someplace with a lot of people.
00:12:14Okay.
00:12:15Isabella, why are you so serious lately?
00:12:21What do you mean?
00:12:22You haven't even smiled once today.
00:12:32You're my best friend, Isabella.
00:12:34Why? I don't know.
00:12:37Because we do things together and we trade secrets.
00:12:40Does everybody have a best friend?
00:12:43If they're lucky.
00:12:44Before I had you, I didn't have one.
00:12:46Why not?
00:12:49Every time I made friends with someone, my daddy's job would change.
00:12:53We moved to a new ship.
00:12:55It takes time to make a best friend.
00:12:57How long?
00:12:59It depends.
00:13:01With you, not very long.
00:13:04You always listened to me, even when I was sad.
00:13:08Clara, I'm glad we're best friends.
00:13:12Race you.
00:13:13Okay.
00:13:15Ready... set... go!
00:13:18( both laughing )
00:13:20( gasps )
00:13:22This area is not designated for children.
00:13:25Are you lost?
00:13:28Where are you supposed to be?
00:13:30We were only playing. We're sorry.
00:13:34Return to your quarters.
00:13:38And we will forget this incident.
00:13:41Thank you.
00:13:44Come on.
00:13:46Hmm.
00:14:01Okay, I've configured the magnetic coil to collect samples of gaseous matter from the nebula.
00:14:07Go ahead and activate the beam emitter.
00:14:09I'm setting the fractionater to continuous cycle.
00:14:11Good. We'll collect samples from eight random sections.
00:14:14That ought to give us a reliable measure.
00:14:20Commander, I... I understand you had a parent who was in Starfleet.
00:14:24Mm, two of them, as a matter of fact.
00:14:26My father was an exozoologist, my mother, a command officer.
00:14:30They must have been posted to a lot of different assignments.
00:14:33( chuckles )
00:14:34Yeah, that's putting it mildly.
00:14:36They were always on the move.
00:14:38Some of the times together, sometimes separately.
00:14:42I never knew whether or not I was gonna be stationed with my father while he studied invertebrates in the Modean system, or on some outpost near the neutral zone with my mom.
00:14:50Was that hard on you?
00:14:51I don't remember it that way.
00:14:52It must have been disruptive if you didn't stay in one place long enough to make friends.
00:14:57Well... yeah, I suppose there were some aspects of my childhood that were less than ideal, but, to me, it was just one long adventure.
00:15:05Children are a lot stronger than you think.
00:15:08As long as they know you love them, they can handle just about anything life throws at 'em, you know?
00:15:14Thanks, Commander. Mm-hmm.
00:15:21No, it's a Samarian coral fish with its fin unfolded.
00:15:26I believe what you are seeing is the effect of the fluid dynamic processes inherent in the large-scale motion of rarefied gas.
00:15:33No, no, first, it was a fish, and now, it's a Mintonian sailing ship.
00:15:40Where? Right there.
00:15:41Don't you see the two swirls coming together to form the mast?
00:15:45I do not see it.
00:15:49It is interesting that people try to find meaningful patterns in things that are essentially random.
00:15:54I have noticed that the images they perceive sometimes suggest what they are thinking about at that particular moment.
00:16:01Besides, it is clearly a bunny rabbit.
00:16:10Looks as though someone's lost their way.
00:16:13Excuse me.
00:16:20Hello. Are you looking for someone?
00:16:22No, I brought Isabella to see Ten Forward.
00:16:26Oh, I see.
00:16:28Well, ordinarily, we only would let you in with a grown-up.
00:16:31But since you brought Isabella, you can be my guest.
00:16:34Won't you join me?
00:16:36Thank you.
00:16:43Now, how about two papalla juices with extra bubbles?
00:16:50Just one please. Isabella isn't thirsty.
00:16:54Oh.
00:16:58One juice.
00:17:00You aren't like the other grown-ups.
00:17:02Oh, no?
00:17:03They don't think Isabella's real.
00:17:05Well, most grown-ups have a hard time with things they can't see.
00:17:09Why?
00:17:11Well, because they get preoccupied by other things.
00:17:16Like what?
00:17:19Like... how much fuel it takes to power a ship, or whether we should go to one star system or another, or whether little girls should go to bed at 7:00, or be allowed to stay up till 8:00.
00:17:31So, their heads get so full that they forget about the things that are important to you and me, like imaginary friends.
00:17:39If the other grown-ups don't understand, how come you do?
00:17:44Well, maybe because when I was your age,
00:17:47I had one.
00:17:48You did? Mmm.
00:17:50What was she like?
00:17:51It... wasn't a she.
00:17:54What was he like?
00:17:56Wasn't a he.
00:17:59It?
00:18:00It was a Tarkassian razorbeast.
00:18:03It had dark brown fur and gold eyes and huge spiny wings, and it would fly past so fast, nobody could see it but me.
00:18:13Sounds scary.
00:18:15Oh, it was... especially when he smiled.
00:18:20But the best thing about him was I could curl up on his furry belly, and he had the softest purr you ever heard.
00:18:28Put me right to sleep every night.
00:18:32I tell you, that razorbeast was a good friend.
00:18:38So is Isabella.
00:18:39( door opens )
00:18:44Hello, Clara.
00:18:45Hello. Clara and Isabella and I were just having a conversation.
00:18:49Would you and Isabella like to come for a walk with me?
00:18:53I guess so.
00:18:54Bye. Bye, Clara.
00:18:59Bye, Isabella.
00:19:06Clara, you haven't been on the ship very long, so maybe you don't know.
00:19:10But Ten Forward is usually for grown-ups.
00:19:14I know that.
00:19:15I didn't wanna go, but Isabella wanted to see it.
00:19:19If Isabella is making you do things you know are wrong, then you must tell her it's not acceptable.
00:19:25I try to, but she doesn't listen.
00:19:31Deck 32.
00:19:34Clara, do you want me to talk to Isabella?
00:19:41Isabella, it's not very nice to get Clara to do things that she isn't supposed to.
00:19:48She's over there.
00:19:53From now on, I want you to ask a grown-up before you go to any place that's off-limits.
00:20:05What does she say?
00:20:08She said...
00:20:10Clara, please tell me what Isabella said.
00:20:15She said... you better leave us alone.
00:20:24I'm a little concerned at the turn this is taking.
00:20:27It seems Clara is beginning to do inappropriate things and blaming them on Isabella.
00:20:32She came into Engineering today.
00:20:33She said it was Isabella's idea.
00:20:36I don't think it's too serious yet, but we should make more of an effort to get her involved with real friends her own age.
00:20:42The children's center's having a ceramics class this afternoon.
00:20:45Why don't I take Clara?
00:20:47I think she'd like that.
00:20:48I'll see if there's any room left in the class.
00:20:51In the meantime, I think you should make yourself more available to Clara.
00:20:55Let her know she doesn't have to rely on Isabella when she needs someone to talk to.
00:21:00Counselor, thank you.
00:21:14Are you mad at me?
00:21:18I'm sorry I got you into trouble.
00:21:20That's okay.
00:21:22Are we still best friends?
00:21:27Here, you can help me put this together, if you want.
00:21:31Clara, why are grown-ups so mean?
00:21:34They're not mean.
00:21:36They're just more serious than we are.
00:21:38Sometimes I wish they would just go away.
00:21:41You do?
00:21:43Yes. I don't like them.
00:21:48I'm bored.
00:21:49Let's go back to Engineering.
00:21:52We're not allowed to go there.
00:21:55I thought we were best friends.
00:21:58We are.
00:21:59Then why won't you play with me?
00:22:01I told you.
00:22:02You always listen to the grown-ups.
00:22:05You don't care about me.
00:22:07That's not true.
00:22:08I thought we'd have fun together once you could really see me.
00:22:12I thought you'd like me.
00:22:16Let's go to Engineering, Clara.
00:22:18Just for a little while. No one will know.
00:22:22It'll be our secret.
00:22:24And if they find us, we'll tell them we got lost.
00:22:28( door chiming )
00:22:29Who is it?
00:22:30Counselor Troi.
00:22:37Hello, Clara. Hi.
00:22:40I came to ask if you'd like to go to a ceramics class.
00:22:43Can Isabella come, too?
00:22:46No. Let's do something with Isabella another day.
00:22:55Well... okay.
00:23:20Sir, as we move deeper into the nebula, sensors indicate that the levels of helium and trionium are continuing to rise.
00:23:28Is it something that the shields can't handle?
00:23:30No, sir, we are well within tolerance levels.
00:23:36Mr. Data?
00:23:37Shields have registered an impact.
00:23:40But the sensors showed nothing out there, right?
00:23:42There is no indication of anything near the ship.
00:23:45Forward velocity is dropping, Captain.
00:23:47Down by .4%.
00:23:49Can we go to warp speed?
00:23:51Until we determine the cause of the drag coefficient,
00:23:53I would not recommend it, sir.
00:23:55Forward velocity down by 1.1%.
00:23:58Ensign, increase power to the impulse engines.
00:24:00Aye, sir.
00:24:02Impulse engines now at full power.
00:24:05We are no longer losing speed.
00:24:06Forward velocity is holding steady.
00:24:09The drag coefficient is still present, but it has stabilized.
00:24:12Bridge to Commander Riker.
00:24:14Check with Mr. La Forge, see if he found anything in the matter sample from the nebula.
00:24:18RIKER: On my way, sir.
00:24:23Any luck?
00:24:24Yeah, take a look at this.
00:24:26We tried radiating the subject matter with just about everything we could think of.
00:24:29We didn't find anything until we subjected it to a high-frequency warp field.
00:24:35We think this is what we've been running into.
00:24:37RIKER: Do you know what it is?
00:24:39We think so, now that the sensors can read it.
00:24:41It seems to be a highly cohesive form of plasma, like a strand of energy.
00:24:45We figure it's a segment of just part of a network of much larger strands.
00:24:49When these things come in contact with our shields, it produces a resonant effect, and that creates the drag coefficient we've been experiencing.
00:24:55Is there anything like this on record?
00:24:57No, sir.
00:24:58Do you know how many of them there might be?
00:25:00No, but if we run the warp field generators through the deflector grid, we could radiate a field outside the ship.
00:25:06We'd be able to see for ourselves.
00:25:07Mm-hmm. Let's do it.
00:25:12( children conversing )
00:25:19Alexander, I thought you might like a partner.
00:25:23This is Clara Sutter.
00:25:24She's new on the Enterprise.
00:25:26Clara, meet Alexander Rozhenko.
00:25:30I'm making a cup for my father. Want to help?
00:25:34Go ahead.
00:25:40Well, you're supposed to put 'em in a row... like this.
00:25:47Clara, would you like some clay of your own?
00:25:50WOMAN: Here, honey.
00:25:55I've never made a cup before.
00:25:57How do you make the round part?
00:25:59Well, it's easy.
00:26:00You take a big piece of clay like this, you push your hand into it.
00:26:11Warp field generators are standing by.
00:26:13Captain, we should be able to illuminate any strands within 2,000 kilometers of the ship.
00:26:17PICARD: Proceed.
00:26:19Initiating field generation.
00:26:34Remarkable.
00:26:36DATA: It is an irregular lattice composed of approximately 47 million strands of energy.
00:26:42Captain, with this many of them, the resonant effect on our shields could cause a problem.
00:26:46Agreed.
00:26:48Ensign, bring us about. Take us out of the nebula.
00:26:51That may be difficult, sir. I am detecting a significant number of strands behind us.
00:26:55Do your best, Ensign.
00:26:56Aye, sir.
00:27:04Hot chocolate.
00:27:14Mmm.
00:27:18Computer, I need my appointment schedule for next week.
00:28:06Kryonian tigers aren't so scary.
00:28:09I saw one once.
00:28:11You did?
00:28:12My father took me to the zoo on Brentalia.
00:28:16All the tiger did was lick my hand, and he smelled funny.
00:28:20( chuckles )
00:28:25I think we need more water.
00:28:28I'll get some.
00:28:35Isabella?
00:28:36Clara!
00:28:38I didn't do it.
00:28:40Who did?
00:28:42It was Isabella.
00:28:45I don't see anybody.
00:28:47She's invisible.
00:28:51I spent two weeks on that.
00:28:53That was really mean.
00:28:55I didn't do it. I didn't.
00:28:58Clara... there's no such thing as invisible people.
00:29:03You're lying.
00:29:05Hey!
00:29:06Isabella, stop!
00:29:31Clara?
00:29:36Why were you being so mean to me?
00:29:39Why'd you do that to my friend?
00:29:41Because you ran away from me.
00:29:44You left me alone.
00:29:46I had to do everything by myself.
00:29:49You're scaring me.
00:29:51I was going to protect you, Clara.
00:29:54I liked you.
00:29:55But now, I don't care.
00:29:58Now, when the others come, you can die along with everyone else.
00:30:16Status, Mr. Data?
00:30:17At our current speed, we will clear the nebula in 12 minutes, four seconds.
00:30:21( sighs ) Continue a full sensor sweep.
00:30:24I want all the information we can gather.
00:30:31Captain, forward velocity is down by .6%.
00:30:38Velocity down by 2.4%
00:30:42Mr. Data?
00:30:44We are moving through a dense concentration of energy strands.
00:30:52Can we go to warp?
00:30:53Stress on the hull would be too great.
00:30:57Captain, the density appears to be lower off the starboard bow.
00:31:01Ensign, bring us to a bearing 030-mark-5.
00:31:04Aye, sir.
00:31:09Forward velocity holding.
00:31:12Steady as she goes.
00:31:23Is something wrong with the cake?
00:31:25Excuse me?
00:31:27Well, I see you sitting here with a piece of untouched chocolate cake in front of you.
00:31:30I assume something's wrong with the cake, or something's bothering you.
00:31:34I'm sure the cake's fine. I've just been thinking.
00:31:37Let me guess.
00:31:39About the little girl with the imaginary friend?
00:31:43I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing.
00:31:45How so?
00:31:47Well, I know the best thing to do is to gradually wean her away from her fantasy.
00:31:52And she did make some new friends today and had a good time.
00:31:56But?
00:31:58But I can't help feeling that I'm taking something from her-- something precious-- a part of her childhood she'll never have again.
00:32:06Hmm.
00:32:08Well... I'm not sure about that.
00:32:11I was, uh, just telling Clara about my imaginary friend.
00:32:17You have an imaginary friend?
00:32:18Mmm.
00:32:19A Tarkassian razorbeast.
00:32:22It protected me.
00:32:24I knew as long as that razorbeast was around, nothing could hurt me.
00:32:27You know, over the years his body kind of faded away, but the idea stayed.
00:32:33And I just don't seem to talk to him as often as I used to.
00:32:37You still talk to it?
00:32:38Oh, yeah.
00:32:39When I'm afraid, or I get confused or a little scared.
00:32:45I just don't think you should have to give up an imaginary friend.
00:32:49Ensign Sutter to Counselor Troi.
00:32:52Go ahead, Ensign.
00:32:53Would you come to my quarters?
00:32:54I'm having a problem with Clara.
00:32:57I'm on my way.
00:33:04She won't even go into her room.
00:33:06She's terrified that Isabella's going to hurt her.
00:33:12Clara?
00:33:15Your father tells me that Isabella has been saying some very bad things to you.
00:33:21What did she say?
00:33:23She said they're going to come and kill everyone.
00:33:26Who's going to come and kill everyone?
00:33:28The others, like her.
00:33:31Did she say why?
00:33:37I know you're very frightened.
00:33:40Sometimes what we imagine can be just as scary as something real.
00:33:45But I promise you, there is no way Isabella can harm you or anyone on this ship.
00:33:51But she's not imaginary anymore.
00:33:54She's real now. I can see her.
00:33:58You can see her?
00:34:00Yes.
00:34:02If I go with you and hold your hand, will you go into your room?
00:34:08I think so.
00:34:09We'll make sure Isabella isn't anywhere around.
00:34:13Okay?
00:34:16Come on.
00:34:24Do you see anybody?
00:34:30Let's look under the bed.
00:34:36Is she there?
00:34:39Okay. Where else?
00:34:43Is she behind here?
00:34:48Maybe Isabella has gone home.
00:34:53Let's see.
00:34:55Anything here?
00:35:04Maybe Isabella knows that you've got new friends now.
00:35:08In fact, I'll bet she doesn't come around as much anymore.
00:35:12Maybe.
00:35:14What about in the closet?
00:35:17Okay.
00:35:22Anybody in here?
00:35:24Looks pretty empty to me.
00:35:26( gasps )
00:35:28( groans )
00:35:29( screams )
00:35:39She was 11, maybe 12, blonde hair.
00:35:44Clara. Clara's sleeping.
00:35:46She's going to be fine.
00:35:49Her bioelectrical processes were severely disrupted.
00:35:52It's as if the energy was pulled right out of her body.
00:35:55Captain.
00:36:00Clara has told me that her imaginary friend has been making threats.
00:36:03She claimed that others are on the way and that they had plans to kill everyone on the ship.
00:36:11Picard to Lieutenant Worf.
00:36:13Worf here, sir.
00:36:14Lieutenant, we've established the presence of what appears to be an alien entity on board.
00:36:19It seems the entity has manifested itself in the form of a 12-year-old human girl who's been seen with Clara Sutter.
00:36:25She has blonde hair and blue eyes.
00:36:27WORF: And a blue dress.
00:36:28Yes, sir, I have seen her.
00:36:31PICARD: When?
00:36:33Two days ago near Engineering.
00:36:35She was with Miss Sutter.
00:36:36Security alert, Mr. Worf. Keep a good lookout.
00:36:39WORF: Aye, sir.
00:36:44She insisted on talking to you.
00:36:47It's about Isabella.
00:36:53What about her, Clara?
00:36:55I think her feelings were hurt.
00:36:57She said she liked me, and she liked being with me.
00:37:01She was my friend.
00:37:04She only got mean when I stopped paying attention to her.
00:37:07Did she say when the others were coming?
00:37:11All right, thanks, sweetie. You go back to bed now.
00:37:13We'll handle this.
00:37:14But Daddy-- PICARD: Clara... if we need your help again,
00:37:18I hope we can count on you.
00:37:20Yes, Captain.
00:37:23RIKER: Captain Picard, report to the Bridge.
00:37:25On my way.
00:37:33Report.
00:37:34Our speed is down by 22%.
00:37:38Strand density is ten times what it was, Captain.
00:37:41We can't take many more of these hits.
00:37:43All stop.
00:37:50Sir, something is moving toward us.
00:37:53Bearing 103, mark 024.
00:37:56On screen.
00:37:59DATA: It appears to be an energy vortex of highly complex patterns, possibly a life form.
00:38:05Red alert!
00:38:08It is in direct physical contact with our shields.
00:38:11Shield strength dropping to 75%.
00:38:1472%.
00:38:16The damn thing's feeding off our shields.
00:38:18Mr. Data, remodulate our shield frequencies.
00:38:21Aye, sir.
00:38:22No effect.
00:38:32Shield strength has dropped to 64%.
00:38:35We've got about eight minutes before this thing drains our shields.
00:38:39Any ideas?
00:38:57Isabella?
00:39:03Isabella?
00:39:05Don't you wanna talk to me?
00:39:08I'm not mad at you.
00:39:20Isabella?
00:39:28We know you've been on this ship for some time now, and that you're posing as Clara's friend and that you've been threatening her.
00:39:39We can only assume that there is some connection between yourself and the life-forms attacking this ship.
00:39:51You're obviously an intelligent being.
00:39:54There's no reason to hide from us.
00:40:03Talk to us?
00:40:08Or can you only communicate by threatening a small child?
00:40:16I'm scared, Isabella.
00:40:29Who are you?
00:40:31I came here to determine whether you were a threat to us, and to examine the purity of your energy sources.
00:40:39Energy?
00:40:40Is that why you're draining our shields?
00:40:42Yes.
00:40:44The emissions for your graviton field generators are far richer than our normal sources of energy.
00:40:53Picard to Bridge. Report.
00:40:55RIKER: Shields are down to 3%.
00:40:56We're diverting all available power.
00:40:59Acknowledged.
00:41:01If it's energy that you want, we have other ways of providing it.
00:41:05You needn't destroy us.
00:41:06You should be destroyed.
00:41:08You're cruel, uncaring creatures.
00:41:11What makes you say that?
00:41:13The way you treat Clara.
00:41:15In what way have we mistreated her?
00:41:17You wouldn't let her do what she wanted to, or go where she wanted to.
00:41:22You mean where you wanted her to.
00:41:24What difference does it make?
00:41:26You were taking her to places that were inappropriate, even dangerous.
00:41:30I wouldn't have let anything happen to her.
00:41:33We didn't know that.
00:41:35We didn't even know if you were real.
00:41:37All we knew was that a little girl's imaginary friend was frightening her, threatening her.
00:41:44That was only after you told Clara not to be my friend.
00:41:53I understand.
00:41:56You are seeing this ship, all of us from a unique perspective, from a child's point of view.
00:42:05It must seem terribly unfair and restrictive to you.
00:42:09As adults, we don't always stop to consider how everything we say and do shapes the impressions of young people.
00:42:18But if you're judging us as a people by the way we treat our children-- and I think there can be no better criterion-- then you must understand how deeply we care for them.
00:42:30When our children are young, they don't understand what might be dangerous.
00:42:35Our rules are to keep them from harm, real or imagined, and that's part of the continuity of our human species.
00:42:43When Clara grows up, she will make rules for her children to protect them, as we protect her.
00:42:55Please, don't hurt us.
00:42:57If you still wanna be my best friend,
00:43:00I'd like that very much.
00:43:26Status, Number One.
00:43:27We're clear of the strands.
00:43:28We'll have full warp capability in 20 minutes.
00:43:30Inform all sections we'll be leaving this area in one hour.
00:43:35Sir? Mr. La Forge,
00:43:37I want you to drive the warp engines to full power and direct an energy beam out into the nebula.
00:43:44Aye, sir.
00:43:58I came to say I'm sorry I frightened you.
00:44:01That's okay.
00:44:02And I misled you.
00:44:04I wasn't really your Isabella.
00:44:07For a while, you were.
00:44:09I never had a friend before.
00:44:12I'm sorry I have to go away.
00:44:15Do you think you'll ever come back?
00:44:18I hope so.
00:44:20So do I.
