00:00:01Bring the stasis units in here and have them on line. MAN: Yes, Doctor.
00:00:03Tell Dr. Selar she can use Ward Three for the ambulatory patients, and I'll stay here--
00:00:07MAN: Transporter Room Four to Sick Bay.
00:00:09They're coming in now.
00:00:10Acknowledged. Stand clear and be ready.
00:00:18MAN: All right. Let's go, let's go.
00:00:19Get him up here.
00:00:22What happened?
00:00:24The Lenarians attacked us outside of the conference room.
00:00:28CRUSHER: He's in cardiac arrest.
00:00:30Connect the pulmonary support unit.
00:00:34He's got internal hemorrhaging.
00:00:36The bioregulator of his artificial heart has been fused, he's got liver and spleen damage.
00:00:41What kind of weapon caused this?
00:00:43A compressed teryon beam.
00:00:4640 cc's inaprovaline.
00:00:54The activity in the isocortex is falling.
00:00:55Cortical stimulators.
00:01:00Now.
00:01:04Again.
00:01:10His respiratory system is shutting down.
00:01:13The levels in the isocortex are still falling.
00:01:15Damn!
00:01:16Prepare a cordrazine series...
00:01:52Welcome to the afterlife, Jean-Luc.
00:01:55You're dead.
00:02:29Space, the final frontier.
00:02:33These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:02:37Its continuing mission--
00:02:39to explore strange new worlds...
00:02:43to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:02:47to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:03:51Q, what is going on?
00:03:53I told you.
00:03:54You're dead, this is the afterlife, and I'm God.
00:04:00You are not God.
00:04:01Blasphemy! You're lucky I don't cast you out or smite you or something.
00:04:06The bottom line is your life ended about five minutes ago under the inept ministrations of Dr. Beverly Crusher.
00:04:17No.
00:04:20I am not dead... because I refuse to believe that the afterlife is run by you.
00:04:26The universe is not so badly designed.
00:04:29Very well. If you really require more evidence of your postmortem status,
00:04:34I guess I'll just have to provide you some.
00:04:36MAN: Jean-Luc, I told you not to go running off to that academy.
00:04:42Father.
00:04:43I told you that Starfleet would bring you to a bad end, but you wouldn't listen.
00:04:50Now, look at you-- dead before your time.
00:04:55Q, enough of this.
00:04:57Enough what?
00:04:58Why couldn't you have listened?
00:05:01Didn't you know that I was working for your best interests?
00:05:04Q, stop this!
00:05:06After all these years, even now, you manage to disappoint me, Jean-Luc.
00:05:16He's not the only one who would like to have a word with you.
00:05:19WOMAN 1: Why, Jean-Luc? Why did you do it?
00:05:21WOMAN 2: Captain, there are still people down there,
00:05:22we can't abandon... MAN 1: There must be
00:05:24some other way, Captain, some other choice
00:05:25than firing on them. MAN 2: I'm warning you.
00:05:27If you continue on this... MAN 3: A direct hit, sir.
00:05:29The ship is destroyed.
00:05:30These are the voices of all the people you've killed throughout the years.
00:05:35Whom I've killed? What do you mean?
00:05:37Death has made you a little dim, Jean-Luc.
00:05:40These are the voices of all the people who have died... through your actions or your inactions.
00:05:46Now, if you have any words of apology or regret,
00:05:49I believe they're all listening.
00:05:51They're a surly bunch, actually, so I wouldn't drag this out too long.
00:05:54I have no intention of performing for your amusement.
00:05:57This is not for me, this is for you, Jean-Luc.
00:05:59This is your opportunity to make peace with your sordid past.
00:06:02I find it hard to believe that you are doing this for the benefit of my soul.
00:06:05Well, now that you've shuffled off the mortal coil, we're free to spend a little time together.
00:06:10"A little time together." How much?
00:06:14Eternity.
00:06:16Now, you're sure you have no regrets or feelings of guilt about your former life?
00:06:21I mean, I can't have you whining and complaining through time.
00:06:25If I'm really dead, then my only regret is dying and finding you here.
00:06:30You wound me, Jean-Luc.
00:06:32After all, I was not the cause of your death.
00:06:35This was.
00:06:40Is that--
00:06:42Your artificial heart.
00:06:44You might have lived if you had a real one instead of this unreliable piece of technology.
00:06:51By the way, how did you lose yours, anyway?
00:06:56A mistake.
00:06:58Is that a regret I hear?
00:07:01I regret many things from those days.
00:07:03Really?
00:07:06( loud grunting )
00:07:12( grunting and groaning )
00:07:32( laughing )
00:07:39Wasn't very smart of you to take on three Nausicaans, was it?
00:07:44No, it wasn't.
00:07:47And did I hear a laugh?
00:07:50It's so unlike you, Jean-Luc, to have a sense of humor-- especially about getting stabbed through the back.
00:07:58I was a different person in those days-- arrogant, undisciplined... with far too much ego and far too little wisdom.
00:08:07I was more like you.
00:08:09Then you must have been far more interesting.
00:08:12Pity you had to change.
00:08:14The pity is that I had to be impaled through the back before I learned that lesson.
00:08:19I started that fight with those Nausicaans.
00:08:23I started it because... because I was young and cocky.
00:08:29If I'd been more responsible in those days,
00:08:31I wouldn't have needed this heart.
00:08:34And I wouldn't have died from a random energy surge 30 years later.
00:08:40So, if you had to do it all over again?
00:08:45Things would be different.
00:08:57( laughter )
00:08:59( clapping )
00:09:02Bravo, bravo.
00:09:04Nicely done.
00:09:05Cortin? Cortin Zweller?
00:09:09Yes.
00:09:11Boy, she must have hit you pretty hard.
00:09:13Of course, you deserved it.
00:09:15Slowing down there, Johnny.
00:09:17You should have seen that one coming.
00:09:21Marta Batanides.
00:09:25Are you okay?
00:09:26Yes, I'm fine.
00:09:28I'm, uh... I'm just a little disoriented, that's all.
00:09:32Oh, come on, he's just playing for sympathy now.
00:09:35Look, I'm gonna get something to eat and head over to the casino at Bonestell.
00:09:38You coming?
00:09:40Uh... I'll catch up with you there.
00:09:45You sure you're okay?
00:09:47Yes, I'm fine. Really, Marta, I'm fine.
00:09:50Come on, Marty.
00:09:51I'll bet he's got another date.
00:09:53That's it, isn't it?
00:09:55You are incorrigible.
00:10:09Attention on deck, Ensign Picard.
00:10:13Q.
00:10:15That's Captain Q to you, young man.
00:10:18What is the point of creating this fantasy?
00:10:21This is no fantasy, I assure you.
00:10:23It's all very real.
00:10:25You're 21 years old again.
00:10:27A brash young man, fresh out of the academy.
00:10:38I certainly don't look it.
00:10:41Well... to everyone else, you do.
00:10:46So, Q, I thought you told me that I was dead.
00:10:50Now, it seems that I'm alive.
00:10:51Oh, you mortals are so obtuse.
00:10:53Why do you persist in believing that life and death are such static and rigid concepts?
00:10:58Why, I can take your life and give it back to you again with the snap of a finger.
00:11:06Let's say for the moment that may be true.
00:11:09What is the purpose in bringing me here?
00:11:11You said you regretted a great many things in your life.
00:11:14Well, here's a chance to change some of them.
00:11:16Change them?
00:11:18Do you mean, change the past?
00:11:21Q, even if you have been able to bring me back in time somehow, surely, you must realize that any alteration in this timeline will have a profound impact on the future.
00:11:30Please, spare me your egotistical musings on your pivotal role in history.
00:11:35Nothing you do here will cause the Federation to collapse or galaxies to explode.
00:11:40To be blunt, you're not that important.
00:11:46I won't do it.
00:11:48I won't alter history.
00:11:50Ah! Very well!
00:11:53Since you attach so much importance to the continuity of time...
00:12:01I will give you my personal guarantee that nothing you do here will end up hurting anyone or have an adverse effect on what you know of as history.
00:12:10The only thing at stake here is your life and your peace of mind.
00:12:15Now... whether you believe me or not, you are here, and you have a second chance.
00:12:24What you choose to do with it is entirely up to you.
00:12:28Do you know where you are?
00:12:31Starbase Earhart.
00:12:34We came here right after graduation to await our first deep space assignments.
00:12:40That's right.
00:12:42It's two days before your unfortunate encounter with a Nausicaan sword.
00:12:46You have that long to make whatever changes you wish.
00:12:50If you can avoid getting stabbed through the heart this time-- which I doubt--
00:12:56I will take you back to what you think of as the present, and you will go on with your life, with a real heart.
00:13:02Then I won't die?
00:13:04Of course, you'll die.
00:13:06It will just be at a later time.
00:13:10What if I don't avoid the fight?
00:13:12What if I won't make the changes?
00:13:15Then you die on the table and we spend eternity together.
00:13:20Wonderful.
00:13:22I'm glad you think so.
00:13:23I'm curious about one thing... Johnny.
00:13:28Why did that rather attractive woman strike you just now-- was it something you said?
00:13:37Her name was Corlina, and... I'd arranged to take her out today.
00:13:43And then she discovered that...
00:13:47I had already made a second date with another woman called, um...
00:13:54...Penny.
00:13:58And Corlina was naturally upset.
00:14:02I had no idea you were such a cad.
00:14:04I'm impressed.
00:14:07Computer, what is the time right now?
00:14:09COMPUTER: 1611 hours.
00:14:14In fact, Penny is waiting for me... right now.
00:14:20Well, carry on.
00:14:24PENNY: Well, you're awfully quiet today.
00:14:28What happened to that dashing young Ensign from last night, hmm?
00:14:33The one with the winning smile and the smooth talk about my eyes?
00:14:37( both chuckle )
00:14:38I'm-- I'm just a little more contemplative.
00:14:41Hmm, and what are you contemplating?
00:14:47Penny, um... do you think we could just talk for a while?
00:14:51I hardly know anything about you.
00:14:53Where you're from, what your interests are, your last name.
00:14:57I come from Rigel, my last name is Muroc, and I like men in uniform.
00:15:05I think that's enough talking.
00:15:14What's wrong?
00:15:16I don't look as attractive to you as I did last night?
00:15:18No, no, not at all.
00:15:21I think you're a very handsome woman.
00:15:24"Handsome."
00:15:26That's something you say to old ladies.
00:15:29You're certainly not an old lady.
00:15:36I didn't want your pity.
00:15:45( blowing )
00:15:48Penny for your thoughts.
00:15:53You never told me you were such a ladies' man.
00:15:56I wasn't.
00:15:58I was a puerile adolescent who allowed himself to be led by his hormones, instead of his head.
00:16:03( applause and cheering )
00:16:05Looks like your friends know how to have fun.
00:16:08You ought to take lessons.
00:16:16Excuse me.
00:16:21( indistinct voices )
00:16:25MAN: How 'bout a bank shot?
00:16:35He's winning.
00:16:36Of course.
00:16:39I thought you had a date.
00:16:42She... decided to leave.
00:16:46You're getting old, Johnny.
00:16:51( cheering )
00:16:54Thank you.
00:16:56Thank you all. Thank you.
00:17:01Very, very nice.
00:17:02I think you should forget about Starfleet and play dom-jot for a living.
00:17:05Oh, this is nothing.
00:17:07A little trigonometry, some minor wrist action.
00:17:10Now, barokie, there's a game.
00:17:12NAUSICAAN: Human!
00:17:18Play dom-jot, human?
00:17:33I think I could be persuaded to play one more game.
00:17:36( growls )
00:17:42Corey, don't play him.
00:17:45Why? It'll cause trouble.
00:17:48He's a Nausicaan.
00:17:50They can get very ill-tempered if they lose.
00:17:53So can I.
00:17:54No, Corey, listen to me.
00:17:55This is a big mistake. Don't play him.
00:17:58What's gotten into you?
00:18:01Let's go.
00:18:09I see you found your Nausicaan friend.
00:18:16You seem un-impaled so far.
00:18:19I'm sorry to disappoint you.
00:18:21( chuckles )
00:18:22MAN: Get him, Corey. Looks good.
00:18:26Look at that, yeah!
00:18:27Ensign Zweller seems to be doing well.
00:18:30He's gonna lose.
00:18:32The Nausicaan is cheating.
00:18:34Really?
00:18:36I'm beginning to like these Nausicaans.
00:18:38If history repeats itself,
00:18:40Corey will figure it out later tonight, and then he'll want revenge.
00:18:46And will you help your best friend avenge this injustice?
00:18:51I did last time.
00:18:53( sighs ) I rigged the table so that he would win in a rematch.
00:18:59Picard, you cheated? I'm impressed.
00:19:03It was a stupid mistake.
00:19:05The Nausicaan didn't take kindly to losing, nor his friends.
00:19:10They were outraged. They wanted a fight.
00:19:16I gave them one.
00:19:18That's a beautiful story.
00:19:21It gets you right here, doesn't it?
00:19:34( speaks Nausicaan )
00:19:44( growls )
00:19:50( laughing )
00:19:59( applause and cheering )
00:20:02Dom-jot.
00:20:03Human play dom-jot.
00:20:06( Nausicaan laughing )
00:20:10I've played a lot of dom-jot in a lot of places, and I've never seen the balls roll that well for anyone.
00:20:15MARTA: So, he was cheating?
00:20:16COREY: I'll bet you that he had some sort of magnetic device in his belt.
00:20:20It was controlling the balls.
00:20:21That's terrible.
00:20:24We gotta get even.
00:20:26What'd you have in mind?
00:20:28Well, we can do to him what he did to us-- cheat.
00:20:33Only this time, we rig the table so his device will backfire on him.
00:20:37Corey, that won't solve anything.
00:20:40It'll teach him that he can't go around cheating Starfleet officers.
00:20:44All it'll do is provoke him.
00:20:47And provoking a Nausicaan is not a good idea.
00:20:50I can handle him. What if he's not alone?
00:20:53What if he brings some of his Nausicaan friends with him?
00:20:55Well, then I guess that's when I'm gonna have to depend on my friends to help me out.
00:21:01Oh, Corey, there's got to be a better way to handle this.
00:21:04When did you start backing away from a good fight?
00:21:07Look, Corey, we're-- we're not cadets anymore.
00:21:10We're officers.
00:21:12We should start to set a higher standard for ourselves.
00:21:16It was a good idea, but let's just forget it, okay?
00:21:30He'll get over it.
00:21:34I hope so.
00:21:39What?
00:21:40Nothing.
00:21:43I-it's just you'd usually be the one plotting revenge.
00:21:47Huh... yes... that would be more in character, wouldn't it?
00:21:52Much, but I always suspected you had a hidden streak of responsibility somewhere.
00:21:59Perhaps it's just that I'm getting older.
00:22:02Maybe these bars are just starting to feel a little heavy, Ensign.
00:22:06Ensign Picard and Ensign Batanides.
00:22:11Sounds weird, doesn't it?
00:22:14It's gonna take some getting used to.
00:22:18It's too bad we can't get used to it together.
00:22:21Well... the three of us, I mean.
00:22:25Oh, of course.
00:22:28( door chimes )
00:22:29Come.
00:22:33Flowers.
00:22:34Is there a "John-Luck Pick-erd" here?
00:22:42From one of your conquests, no doubt.
00:22:47I guess some things aren't gonna change.
00:22:54( door opens, closes )
00:22:57Did I interrupt anything sordid, I hope?
00:23:02No, Q, you did not.
00:23:05Pity.
00:23:06She's quite attractive.
00:23:08We were friends, nothing more.
00:23:11Is that another regret I hear?
00:23:13My, my... We're simply riddled with regrets about our youth, now, aren't we?
00:23:18My friendship with Marta is not something that I regret.
00:23:21But you wish it had been more than just a friendship, now, don't you?
00:23:25Well... maybe you can change all that.
00:23:29Q, what is it you want?
00:23:32I thought you'd like to know that Mr. Zweller's decided not to take your advice.
00:23:37He's in the Bonestell Facility right now rigging the table to beat the Nausicaan.
00:23:42I guess you weren't that persuasive.
00:24:00Corey... Ow!
00:24:03Johnny, don't sneak up on me like that.
00:24:05I thought you were the gambling foreman.
00:24:06I'm sorry.
00:24:09I'm glad you're here.
00:24:10Hand me that magna-spanner, huh?
00:24:12Corey, I'm not here to help you.
00:24:14I'm here to stop you from making a serious mistake.
00:24:18You sound like my mother.
00:24:20Cheating the Nausicaans could have serious consequences for all of us.
00:24:24It's a risk we can't afford to take.
00:24:26You are my mother.
00:24:30Well, gee, Mom.
00:24:31I guess I'll just have to go tell those Nausicaans
00:24:33I don't mind if they cheat me.
00:24:35This is not a joke, Corey.
00:24:38It better be.
00:24:39Now, I'm gonna finish my work here.
00:24:41If you wanna help me, fine.
00:24:44If not, I'll see you back at the starbase.
00:24:46I said you're not doing this.
00:24:53Are you gonna hit me, Johnny?
00:24:55No.
00:24:59But I'll tell the gambling foreman someone has been tampering with his dom-jot table.
00:25:05All right.
00:25:07Have it your way, Ensign Picard.
00:25:18I just couldn't make him understand.
00:25:21At least he did finally give it up.
00:25:23Yes, but he didn't take it very well.
00:25:26( chuckles ) Oh, you know Corey.
00:25:30He'll forget all about it by tomorrow.
00:25:32I hope you're right, because he and I were friends for years after this.
00:25:38( chuckles )
00:25:40I mean, um... I hope that we will be.
00:25:47You know... you keep smiling at me.
00:25:54Well, I've just never seen you like this before.
00:25:58You're so... serious.
00:26:04Do I really seem that different?
00:26:09Maybe I'm just not used to seeing you in your officer's uniform.
00:26:16No, it's-- it's more than that.
00:26:19You do seem different.
00:26:22Well, I'm not-- I'm not complaining or anything.
00:26:25I think it suits you.
00:26:28Really?
00:26:29Yes.
00:26:33It's very... attractive.
00:26:39Johnny... haven't you ever thought about us... getting together?
00:26:49Yes, I have, actually.
00:26:53I've thought about it for a long time.
00:26:58Why didn't you ever say so?
00:27:00I don't know.
00:27:05And at this moment, I really have no idea why not.
00:27:17You've said so now.
00:27:57Morning, darling.
00:28:01Feeling a little jumpy this morning?
00:28:04Are we... guilty, perhaps?
00:28:08I don't feel guilty about anything, Q.
00:28:11No?
00:28:13( imitating Picard ) "We're just friends, Q.
00:28:16Nothing more."
00:28:19And we're still friends.
00:28:23( sighs ) So?
00:28:27What's next?
00:28:31I don't know.
00:28:36What I do know is, things will be different.
00:28:43I'm sure.
00:28:48( quiet conversation )
00:29:02Good morning.
00:29:03Johnny...
00:29:13What's wrong?
00:29:17Well, this is the morning after, huh?
00:29:23Look...
00:29:27I don't regret anything that happened last night.
00:29:29I hope you don't regret it either.
00:29:34I don't-- I don't know.
00:29:38We've been friends for a long time, and... and now...
00:29:46I'm afraid we've ruined that friendship.
00:29:54Then perhaps we should... forget about what happened, and, uh... and try to...
00:30:02I wish I could.
00:30:05It would make it much easier to say good-bye tomorrow.
00:30:13Um...
00:30:18We're all supposed to, um, get together later for a last big night out on the town before we all ship out.
00:30:25I don't want you to do anything that would make you uncomfortable.
00:30:31We planned it.
00:30:33I'll be there.
00:30:45Q: Well, let's see.
00:30:47You've managed to get slapped by one woman, a drink thrown in your face by another, and alienate your two best friends.
00:30:55Doing pretty well so far.
00:30:56The only thing left to avoid is getting stabbed through the heart.
00:31:01( loud crunching )
00:31:04( indistinct voices )
00:31:09MAN: Good shot, good shot.
00:31:20I think you'll like serving on board the Ajax.
00:31:22I hear that Captain Narth is an excellent officer.
00:31:27So I hear.
00:31:36Well... here's to the class of '27.
00:31:57Play dom-jot, human?
00:32:01Give you a better chance.
00:32:03Give you a bigger stick, maybe.
00:32:06I don't think we're interested.
00:32:10They are undari-- cowards.
00:32:14( Nausicaans laughing )
00:32:16What did you say?
00:32:18Coward, like all Starfleet, you talk and you talk.
00:32:23But you have no guramba.
00:32:26Why don't we find out? Hey, don't be a fool, Corey.
00:32:28Look, there are plenty of other people to play dom-jot with.
00:32:30Now, just go about your business.
00:32:33Maybe I play with her.
00:32:35Give her good time.
00:32:39( grunts )
00:32:41( laughter )
00:32:44Orcho lok resnik Starfleet.
00:32:56I'm sorry, Corey.
00:32:57He was reaching for a weapon.
00:33:01I don't know who you are anymore, but you're not my friend.
00:33:13Good-bye, Johnny.
00:33:19Congratulations, mon capitaine.
00:33:21You did it.
00:33:23WORF: Can I help you?
00:33:26Can I help you, Mr. Picard?
00:33:29Mr. Worf...?
00:33:37This is not for me. You should take it to Commander La Forge in Engineering.
00:33:46What's happened?
00:33:48Is something wrong?
00:33:50I'm not sure.
00:33:51Mr. Worf, what is my rank and position?
00:33:54You are Lieutenant junior grade assistant astrophysics officer.
00:34:00Are you feeling all right?
00:34:02Who is the captain of this ship?
00:34:07Captain Thomas Halloway.
00:34:09Perhaps I should escort you to Sick Bay.
00:34:12No, I can find my own way there.
00:34:15Thank you, Commander.
00:34:20Beverly... something has happened to me. I'm not sure--
00:34:23( German accent ) Well, well, well.
00:34:25What seems to be the trouble,
00:34:28Lieutenant Picard?
00:34:29Q, what have you done?
00:34:31I've done exactly as I promised.
00:34:33I've returned you to the present.
00:34:35But this is not the present I remember.
00:34:37You said nothing would change.
00:34:40Nothing has changed, Jean-Luc... except for you.
00:34:45But then again, that's what you wanted, wasn't it?
00:34:46To change the man you were in your youth.
00:34:49Well, you did it.
00:34:50This is the man you are today.
00:34:53And you should be happy.
00:34:56You have a real heart beating in your chest and you get to live out the rest of your life in safety running tests, making analyses and carrying reports to your superiors.
00:35:22( low conversation )
00:35:32Excuse me. Am I interrupting?
00:35:35No, not at all. Have a seat.
00:35:36Thank you.
00:35:39I'd like to talk to you for a moment about my future on the Enterprise.
00:35:42Of course, Lieutenant.
00:35:44Jean-Luc, isn't it?
00:35:46Maybe I should go. No. Please, Counselor.
00:35:48I would very much like to hear your thoughts.
00:35:51First of all-- and I would like you to be absolutely straightforward with me-- how would you evaluate me as an officer?
00:36:01Well, um... your performance records have always been good.
00:36:06You're thorough, dedicated...
00:36:09Steady, reliable.
00:36:14Punctual.
00:36:16I see.
00:36:18What would you say if I told you that I believed that I was capable of being very much more?
00:36:28Perhaps we should discuss this at your next evaluation.
00:36:30I would appreciate it if we could discuss it now.
00:36:34You see, I feel that I would like to move beyond astrophysics, to Engineering or... or security.
00:36:43Something that might even lead to command.
00:36:45Frankly, Lieutenant...
00:36:49I don't think that's realistic.
00:36:51Why?
00:36:52I really don't think this is the place to be discussing this--
00:36:55Please, this is very important to me.
00:36:58I believe that I can do more.
00:37:02Hasn't that been the problem all along?
00:37:04Throughout your career you've had lofty goals, but... you've never been willing to do what's necessary to attain them.
00:37:14Would that be your evaluation as well, Commander?
00:37:16I think I have to agree with the Counselor.
00:37:19If you wanna get ahead, you have to take chances, stand out in a crowd, get noticed.
00:37:26I see.
00:37:27Now, we don't wanna lose you.
00:37:29You're a very good officer.
00:37:31Just not one who stands out.
00:37:35Why don't I talk to Commander La Forge in Engineering and see what we can do.
00:37:38But, command?
00:37:39Well... we'll see.
00:37:44DATA: Senior officers, please report to the captain's ready room.
00:37:46Acknowledged.
00:37:48We should talk about this later.
00:37:58All right, Q, that's enough.
00:38:01You've made your point.
00:38:05Q?
00:38:06La Forge to Lieutenant Picard.
00:38:08I'm still waiting for that statistical analysis.
00:38:13I'm on my way, sir.
00:38:21Main Engineering.
00:38:27You having a good laugh now, Q?
00:38:30Does it amuse you to think of me living out the rest of my life as a dreary man in a tedious job?
00:38:40I gave you something most mortals never experience-- a second chance at life.
00:38:46And now, all you can do is complain?
00:38:49I can't live out my days as that person.
00:38:52That man is bereft of passion... and imagination!
00:38:58That is not who I am!
00:38:59Au contraire.
00:39:01He's the person you wanted to be-- one who was less arrogant and undisciplined in his youth.
00:39:07One who was less like me.
00:39:10The Jean-Luc Picard you wanted to be-- the one who did not fight the Nausicaan-- had quite a different career from the one you remember.
00:39:18That Picard never had a brush with death, never came face-to-face with his own mortality, never realized how fragile life is or how important each moment must be.
00:39:29So, his life never came into focus.
00:39:31He drifted through much of his career with no plan or agenda, going from one assignment to the next, never seizing the opportunities that presented themselves.
00:39:43He never led the away team on Milika III to save the ambassador, or take charge of the Stargazer's Bridge when its captain was killed.
00:39:53And no one ever offered him a command.
00:39:56He learned to play it safe... and he never, ever got noticed by anyone.
00:40:11You're right, Q.
00:40:13You gave me the chance to change and I took the opportunity.
00:40:17But I admit now, it was a mistake.
00:40:23Are you asking me for something, Jean-Luc?
00:40:26Give me a chance to put things back the way they were before.
00:40:30Before you died in Sick Bay.
00:40:32Is that what you want?
00:40:33I would rather die as the man I was than live the life I just saw.
00:40:43Coward, like all Starfleet.
00:40:46You talk and you talk, but you have no guramba.
00:40:50( people laughing )
00:40:52What did you say?
00:40:54I said... you are a coward.
00:40:58That's what I thought you said.
00:41:01( grunting )
00:41:02( yelling )
00:41:34( groaning )
00:41:42( laughing )
00:41:52His vital signs are stable.
00:41:58Captain?
00:42:00Jean-Luc.
00:42:06You were injured... but I think you're going to be all right.
00:42:12( chuckling )
00:42:17( chuckling continues )
00:42:31I still don't know what to make of it.
00:42:34Was it a dream?
00:42:36Or was it one of Q's elaborate tricks?
00:42:40A lot of people who are near death have strange experiences, but I have never heard one so detailed.
00:42:46And, you know, there's still part of me that cannot accept that Q would give me a second chance, or that he would demonstrate so much compassion.
00:42:56And if it was Q...
00:42:59I owe him a debt of gratitude.
00:43:02In what sense?
00:43:03It sounds like he put you through hell.
00:43:05There are many parts of my youth that I'm not proud of.
00:43:10There were... loose threads... untidy parts of me that I would like to remove.
00:43:17But when I pulled on one of those threads, it unraveled the tapestry of my life.
00:43:28I was just trying to imagine a hell-bent-for-leather young officer insulting a Nausicaan twice his size.
00:43:37I wish I had a chance to know that Jean-Luc Picard.
00:43:40Oh, well, to tell the truth, that wasn't the first run-in that I had with a couple of surly Nausicaans.
00:43:45Really?
00:43:46Oh, yes.
00:43:49During my sophomore year,
00:43:50I was assigned to training on Morikin VII.
00:43:54Well, there was a Nausicaan outpost on one of the outlying asteroids.
00:43:57And one day...
