00:00:06( door chimes )
00:00:08( door chimes )
00:00:23( beeps )
00:00:28( sighs )
00:00:30All right. Come in.
00:00:35Guinan. What's wrong?
00:00:37I need a doctor.
00:00:38Geordi beat me in straight sets today.
00:00:40I think I've developed tennis elbow.
00:00:42Well, you better go to Sick Bay.
00:00:45I think Dr. Selar is on duty.
00:00:47I don't want to see Dr. Selar.
00:00:48I always see you.
00:00:49I'm very particular about my doctors.
00:00:52Well, you better get a new one because I'm not a doctor on this ship anymore.
00:01:28Space, the final frontier.
00:01:32These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
00:01:36Its continuing mission--
00:01:38to explore strange new worlds,
00:01:42to seek out new life and new civilizations,
00:01:47to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:02:55Three days on a shuttle to Starbase 23, a transport back to Earth...
00:02:59I can hear Admiral Brooks now telling me how I've disgraced Starfleet Medical.
00:03:04Then, a leisurely day and a half before the formal inquiry begins and my career ends.
00:03:10Beverly... my elbow.
00:03:14Your elbow.
00:03:15Let me see it.
00:03:19Does this hurt?
00:03:20Ow! Yes, right there.
00:03:22That's tennis elbow, all right.
00:03:24Here. Hold your arm like this.
00:03:27You know, I've never been to a formal inquiry.
00:03:30Well, I'll see if I can arrange one for you.
00:03:32All you have to do is disobey orders, violate medical ethics and cause an interstellar incident.
00:03:39Well, I guess that would do it.
00:03:44Make a fist.
00:03:47Do I have to hit you with my fist before you tell me what happened?
00:03:53It all started when those scientists came on board.
00:03:56No. It started when I got curious.
00:03:59Well, there's nothing wrong with that.
00:04:02That's why I went to the Altine conference.
00:04:04I'd heard about a new subspace technology, developed by a Ferengi-- a Dr. Reyga.
00:04:09A Ferengi scientist. Hmm.
00:04:13His invention was based on metaphasic fields but his methodology was completely unorthodox.
00:04:18Well, I like unorthodox.
00:04:20Too bad you weren't there.
00:04:22Nobody else would listen to him.
00:04:23They all but jeered him off the stage.
00:04:26But I had read his paper and his work was extraordinary.
00:04:30So you gathered all these scientists to come hear this Ferengi.
00:04:35Yes. I hoped I could be a facilitator.
00:04:38I thought that if I invited scientists from various cultures to board the Enterprise
00:04:42I could sit them down and help them to understand the value of his ideas.
00:04:45Like a scientific diplomat.
00:04:47Exactly.
00:04:49So, after persuading the captain
00:04:50I had to round up as many scientists as I could from the field of subspace technology.
00:04:56But of all the scientists I invited,
00:04:58only four were interested
00:05:00in hearing about Dr. Reyga's invention,
00:05:02and I wasn't altogether sure
00:05:04that they were going to be compatible.
00:05:07Kurak was a warp field specialist
00:05:09on the Klingon homeworld.
00:05:11I don't think Klingons regard scientists very highly.
00:05:14She always seemed a little defensive.
00:05:17Dr. T'pan is practically a legend
00:05:20in the field of subspace morphology.
00:05:22She's been the director of the Vulcan science academy
00:05:24for 15 years.
00:05:26Her husband, Dr. Christopher, came with her.
00:05:29I didn't know much about him,
00:05:31but he was some kind of subspace theoretician.
00:05:34Jo'bril was a Takaran, the first one I'd ever met.
00:05:38I had no idea what to expect from him.
00:05:41And then there was Dr. Reyga, the Ferengi scientist.
00:05:46You've all seen my experimental data.
00:05:48The metaphasic shield has been proven.
00:05:51Forgive my skepticism, doctor, but your claims are somewhat extravagant.
00:05:55Protect a shuttle within a star's corona?
00:05:58Not even your own government believes it can be done.
00:06:00That's why I've invited you all here.
00:06:04You have the vision to see the potential of Dr. Reyga's metaphasic shield.
00:06:09I need help to develop the shield.
00:06:11I am willing to grant exclusive rights to whoever provides the necessary resources.
00:06:16I think you all realize what this shielding process could mean.
00:06:20The possibilities of exploration and research are endless.
00:06:24But only if it works.
00:06:26I'm not convinced that this metaphasic shield can withstand either the temperature or the radiation it would be exposed to.
00:06:33But it has-- not only in countless simulations but in a field test that I conducted myself.
00:06:41For which, of course, we have only your word.
00:06:43REYGA: Are you accusing me of falsifying my data?
00:06:47KURAK: You would not be the first scientist to manipulate experimental data to his own advantage.
00:06:52Dr. Reyga has offered to demonstrate his invention.
00:06:56He's outfitted one of our shuttles with his metaphasic shield.
00:06:59I will take it into the corona of the star Vaytan.
00:07:02That star has a superdense corona.
00:07:04The shuttle would be subjected to particularly intense radiation.
00:07:07Perhaps it would be wise to choose a star of lesser magnitude.
00:07:11I agree.
00:07:12My own research into solar energy transfer suggests that Vaytan's corona is extremely unstable.
00:07:18What better way to test my invention?
00:07:21I'm not concerned.
00:07:23The shield will hold.
00:07:25I, for one, would feel more comfortable if someone else flew the shuttle-- someone more objective.
00:07:31JO'BRIL: I will volunteer for that task.
00:07:34I've spent years studying solar plasma reactions.
00:07:38The thought of being able to penetrate a star's corona... it is a remarkable opportunity.
00:07:45I've studied your data, Dr. Reyga.
00:07:48I think you're on solid scientific ground.
00:07:50I do not share your optimism, Dr. Jo'bril, but if you wish to pilot the craft
00:07:56I would be more confident in your assessment of the shield than Dr. Reyga's.
00:07:59CHRISTOPHER: I agree.
00:08:01At this point, we need an impartial evaluation.
00:08:03We'll need to be sure that you're familiar with the shuttle's controls and Dr. Reyga's modifications.
00:08:08I am an accomplished pilot. It will be no problem.
00:08:12Well, what do you think?
00:08:16I am gratified, Dr. Jo'bril.
00:08:18And there will be no difficulty in operating the metaphasic controls.
00:08:22The system will activate automatically as you approach the star.
00:08:26CRUSHER: Well, then, we'll proceed with the demonstration at 1500 hours.
00:08:30We'll meet on the Bridge.
00:08:35It wasn't exactly an enthusiastic response
00:08:37to Dr. Reyga's technology, but given the circumstances
00:08:41and the scientists' quarrelsome personalities
00:08:44I was quite pleased.
00:08:47I thought that went well, didn't you?
00:08:49Thanks to you, doctor.
00:08:50I didn't do anything.
00:08:56This is an opportunity I would never have had without you and I promise you, I'll never forget it.
00:09:01Some of the scientists still seem a little doubtful but after the demonstration, I'm sure they'll come around.
00:09:06Well, if there's anything I'm used to it's skepticism.
00:09:08After all, a Ferengi scientist is almost a contradiction in terms.
00:09:13No. Don't deny it.
00:09:15I know how the Ferengi are regarded.
00:09:17I still expect the scientific community to be a little more open than they seem to be.
00:09:22The metaphasic shield is a breakthrough in technology.
00:09:25Many scientists have tried to develop it.
00:09:26It's only natural that there would be some... resistance.
00:09:31You mean jealousy. I know.
00:09:34I wondered if that might account for Dr. T'pan's attitude.
00:09:37She's been working on subspace shielding technology for years and you've beaten her to the punch.
00:09:42I'm really not interested in competition.
00:09:44All I want is to be acknowledged-- respected as a scientist.
00:09:50This invention will finally do that.
00:09:53CRUSHER: I figured the hard part was over.
00:09:55I'd stepped out on a limb, and it hadn't broken.
00:09:57Not bad for my first venture into scientific diplomacy.
00:10:02Captain, the shuttle has been launched.
00:10:05On screen. Open a channel.
00:10:10I am one million kilometers from the star's corona.
00:10:13Proceeding at 3/4 impulse.
00:10:15I should reach it in approximately three minutes.
00:10:21The metaphasic shielding has begun to form.
00:10:23DATA: External temperature is 0.9 million Kelvins and rising.
00:10:27Radiation levels are nearing 10,000 rads.
00:10:30That should have no effect on the shuttle cabin.
00:10:32That's right.
00:10:34Temperature in the cabin is 21 degrees Celsius and the radiation levels are normal.
00:10:38Wait. I'm reading elevated neutrino levels in the cabin.
00:10:42Those are from the subspace field that's encapsulating the shuttle.
00:10:46The levels are well within acceptable parameters.
00:10:49Outside temperature is rising rapidly--
00:10:511.7 million Kelvins.
00:10:53CRUSHER: Temperature is still 21 degrees and the shield is holding.
00:10:58350,000 kilometers and closing.
00:11:02This is incredible.
00:11:04I am actually flying into a star.
00:11:08Congratulations, doctor.
00:11:09This is an amazing achievement.
00:11:18Radiation levels outside the shuttle are nearing 14,000 rads.
00:11:23The temperature inside the cabin is still normal.
00:11:25I am now fully engulfed in the corona.
00:11:29It's astonishing.
00:11:32You see, doctors.
00:11:34Metaphasic shielding is a reality.
00:11:39Dr. Jo'bril, can you give us an estimate of the plasma turbulence?
00:11:43( beeping )
00:11:44( breathing heavily )
00:11:46Dr. Jo'bril.
00:11:47Something's wrong.
00:11:49What's going on, Mr. Data?
00:11:50Sensors indicate an increased level of baryon particles in the cabin.
00:11:54REYGA: No.
00:11:55That's not possible.
00:11:58Dr. Jo'bril, can you hear me?
00:12:00Please respond.
00:12:02( gasping )
00:12:05Baryon levels are continuing to rise, sir.
00:12:09( gasping )
00:12:11REYGA: I don't understand it.
00:12:12This shouldn't be happening.
00:12:14Mr. Worf, can you beam him out of there?
00:12:16The solar radiation is interfering.
00:12:18He must be at least 500,000 kilometers from the star before we can get a transporter lock.
00:12:24( gasping )
00:12:26We're losing him.
00:12:28Dr. Jo'bril, listen to me.
00:12:31It is imperative that you turn the shuttle.
00:12:33Take it out of the corona.
00:12:35Do you understand me?
00:12:38Pilot the shuttle away from the star.
00:12:49The shuttle is emerging from the corona, sir.
00:12:51Mr. Worf, get a lock on him as soon as you can.
00:12:54Beam him directly to Sick Bay.
00:12:57At that point, the doubts of the others seemed justified.
00:13:00I had no idea what had gone wrong
00:13:03or how seriously Dr. Jo'bril had been injured,
00:13:05but I knew this incident could destroy Reyga's chance
00:13:07to be accepted by the scientific community.
00:13:1420cc's Inaprovaline.
00:13:16( labored breathing )
00:13:24It's not working.
00:13:25Cortical stimulators.
00:13:34Now.
00:13:35( raspy breathing )
00:13:38Again.
00:13:40( raspy breathing )
00:13:53( hoarsely ): I saw...
00:13:56...the sun.
00:14:01( long gasp )
00:14:16So that was my first experience as a scientific diplomat.
00:14:19A complete failure.
00:14:23( sighs )
00:14:24I don't understand.
00:14:26No?
00:14:28I mean, I've lost patients before.
00:14:30But this was different.
00:14:32Mm-hmm.
00:14:34You know, when you're a doctor and you have patients you're in control, but when you send somebody out on a mission all you can do is sit and watch.
00:14:47That's what I felt... helpless.
00:14:50Anybody would.
00:14:52Don't be too hard on yourself.
00:14:57You know, what you say reminds me of something Jean-Luc said to me when I was doing the autopsy on Jo'bril.
00:15:04It was probably the most puzzling autopsy
00:15:06I've ever performed, and the most frustrating
00:15:09because Jo'bril's anatomy
00:15:11was unlike any I'd encountered,
00:15:13and I've run into some unusual specimens.
00:15:17How's it going?
00:15:19I've never run into a humanoid species like this before.
00:15:22His internal physiology is baffling.
00:15:25He doesn't seem to have any discrete organs-- at least not in the traditional sense.
00:15:30Practically every system is equally distributed throughout the body.
00:15:34Now, that kind of physiology should make him incredibly resistant to any injury, so whatever killed him must have occurred at the cellular level.
00:15:42Do you have any idea what it was?
00:15:43No. Something caused a massive, system-wide failure but I don't know what.
00:15:50Were the solar radiation levels high enough to kill him?
00:15:53His exposure to the star's radiation was minimal.
00:15:56It's all very strange.
00:15:58There's no apparent cause of death.
00:16:01Doctor, here's the result of the tissue scan you asked for.
00:16:05That's odd.
00:16:06The rate of cellular decay is extremely low.
00:16:13Beverly, the answers will come.
00:16:15Maybe even minimal exposure to the radiation altered the cellular physiology.
00:16:22You know, you've been at this for hours.
00:16:24You might think more clearly if you got a good night's sleep.
00:16:26I can't sleep.
00:16:28I want to find out what killed him.
00:16:29I owe that to Dr. Reyga.
00:16:32Are you doing it for Dr. Reyga or yourself?
00:16:36What do you mean?
00:16:37You're the loneliest person in the world right now.
00:16:40No one can say anything, no one can do anything that will help, and you think that it will never go away and you're right-- it won't, but you can get used to it.
00:16:52I know it doesn't feel like that now, but you can.
00:17:00At the time, I was too preoccupied with my problems
00:17:03to understand what he was saying.
00:17:05I wasn't thinking about the rest of my life.
00:17:07I was trying to make sense of what had happened
00:17:09and I wasn't alone.
00:17:12Jo'bril's death had raised a lot of questions.
00:17:15Geordi and Data were determined to find out what had gone wrong
00:17:19and they were busy going over every millimeter
00:17:21of the shuttle-- with Dr. Reyga's help.
00:17:28Run a diagnostic on the EPS flow regulator.
00:17:31The flow regulator is functioning normally.
00:17:34What about the field emitter coil?
00:17:35Has it maintained polarity?
00:17:37Yes, doctor.
00:17:38The radial force compensator?
00:17:40I am unable to locate any malfunctions.
00:17:42All systems are operating according to your design specifications.
00:17:50Did you find anything wrong?
00:17:51No. I don't understand it.
00:17:53There must be something we've overlooked.
00:17:54I found micro-crystalline damage to the hull, which confirms that your shield
00:17:58was breached by a burst of baryonic radiation.
00:18:01Were the levels high enough to cause damage to organic tissue?
00:18:03I don't know.
00:18:05Perhaps there was an unexpected interaction between the solar radiation and the metaphasic shield.
00:18:09No! That's not possible.
00:18:12I anticipated every contingency.
00:18:15Then, maybe Jo'bril ran into something in the corona which you didn't anticipate, and your shield just wasn't able to protect him from it.
00:18:22My shield was not at fault.
00:18:24CRUSHER: Reyga seemed angry,
00:18:25but I knew it was because he was so disappointed.
00:18:28Everything he'd worked for, hoped for, was slipping away
00:18:32and that made what I had to do next even harder.
00:18:37I'm sure you all understand that, in light of what happened,
00:18:40I think it would be inappropriate to continue further testing.
00:18:43Perhaps if Dr. Reyga has perfected his metaphasic technology we can try again.
00:18:48Dr. Crusher, please, if I could have a little more time to investigate,
00:18:53I know I could find what went wrong.
00:18:56But that won't bring back Jo'bril, will it?
00:18:58I do not believe the shield will ever work.
00:19:01Its very concept is flawed.
00:19:06Just one more test.
00:19:08Whom do you propose we sacrifice next?
00:19:11I will pilot the shuttle myself.
00:19:16I'm sorry.
00:19:17As chief medical officer, I'm responsible for the health and safety of all the people aboard.
00:19:21I will not authorize any further tests.
00:19:26Very well.
00:19:28But I will prove myself.
00:19:32I couldn't help but admire his tenacity.
00:19:34He just wasn't going to accept defeat
00:19:37and I hoped he would prove himself,
00:19:40but that was the last time I saw him alive.
00:19:47We'd gone to science lab four when the ship's sensors
00:19:50registered a sizable plasma surge there.
00:19:54Look at this-- a plasma infuser.
00:19:57It's completely discharged.
00:19:59The blast must have killed him instantly.
00:20:01Well, perhaps he could not live with the failure of his invention and took his own life.
00:20:06Or perhaps someone just wanted it to look that way.
00:20:10Isn't it odd that he could hold on so tightly to the infuser when it was discharged?
00:20:15The normal reflex would have been to drop it.
00:20:18The plasma shock could have affected his nervous system.
00:20:20He may have reacted by gripping tighter.
00:20:23I'll know for certain when I do the autopsy.
00:20:26Is your examination complete, doctor?
00:20:28For now.
00:20:29Please have his body taken to the morgue.
00:20:31Very well.
00:20:35I remembered his passion and commitment
00:20:38and his determination to prove himself,
00:20:40and I was sure that this man had not taken his own life,
00:20:45and if anyone could understand that
00:20:47I knew it would be Captain Picard.
00:20:51I was with him right before he died.
00:20:54He was not suicidal.
00:20:56But by your own admission
00:20:58Reyga was a difficult man to understand.
00:21:02Isn't it possible that he was simply masking his feelings?
00:21:05I don't think so.
00:21:07He was disappointed at the failure of his device and certainly he was upset at Jo'bril's death, but I never got the sense that he was ready to end his own life, and if that's true, then someone else killed him.
00:21:19Do you have any evidence of that?
00:21:21Not yet.
00:21:23But when I finish the autopsy I hope I'll have it.
00:21:27Beverly...
00:21:30I'm afraid there will be no autopsy.
00:21:33The family have already been contacted.
00:21:35They insist that the body must not be touched until they perform the Ferengi death ritual.
00:21:39But there's a question as to the circumstances of his death.
00:21:42To the family, that's irrelevant.
00:21:43Let me speak with them.
00:21:44Please, believe me... they're adamant.
00:21:47We are scheduled to rendezvous with a Ferengi vessel in 17 hours.
00:21:51They will pick up Reyga's body then.
00:21:53I'm sorry, there will be no autopsy.
00:21:55Jean-Luc, I cannot just drop this.
00:21:58Don't you see?
00:21:59There may have been a murder.
00:22:01Then you will have to find evidence some way other than an autopsy.
00:22:15I don't understand, doctor.
00:22:16Isn't it pretty clear that Reyga died from a plasma discharge?
00:22:19It won't be clear until after an autopsy.
00:22:22As far as I know, he could have been poisoned and someone put the plasma infuser in his hand after he died.
00:22:26You think he was murdered?
00:22:27I'm not discounting that possibility.
00:22:30The point is, without a complete autopsy there's no way of knowing for certain.
00:22:34Why won't the Ferengi allow it?
00:22:36It has to do with their death rituals.
00:22:38A body can't be violated before it's buried.
00:22:40And apparently, the family is more concerned about ritual than finding out the truth about how he died.
00:22:45I just can't get the information I need from a tricorder scan.
00:22:51Suspects.
00:22:53If Reyga didn't kill himself, someone else did.
00:22:55So who are the possible suspects?
00:22:58Whoever had something to gain from his death.
00:23:00And the only ones to fit that category are the other scientists.
00:23:15I'm afraid I don't understand, doctor.
00:23:17Do you have evidence that Reyga was murdered?
00:23:20No, but I can't believe he took his own life and I would like to explore any possibilities a bit further.
00:23:26What reason would anyone have to kill him?
00:23:28I was wondering if you might have some thoughts along that line.
00:23:32I see.
00:23:34You are suggesting that I had such a motive.
00:23:37If Reyga's technology had been successful, you might have been displaced as the preeminent scientist in subspace technology.
00:23:44But since it wasn't successful it isn't logical to conclude that I had such a motive, is it?
00:23:51I must say I resent this, doctor.
00:23:54We have all been shocked by recent events.
00:23:56I don't see there's anything to gain by dragging us through these insinuations.
00:24:01I'm just trying to uncover the truth and I need your help to do it.
00:24:06Have you seen or heard anything that might suggest that someone else had a motive?
00:24:11We are trying to forget the unpleasantness of these past several days-- not have them stirred up again.
00:24:17I find it disturbing that you would try to foster suspicions among us.
00:24:21Forgive me.
00:24:23I don't mean to upset you, but have you noticed anything unusual?
00:24:28I find your question distasteful.
00:24:39Is there something you're not telling me?
00:24:46I'm sure it's nothing.
00:24:51I was in the storage room of the science laboratory yesterday.
00:24:54Kurak was working in the lab.
00:24:56Reyga came in, and... they got into an... an argument.
00:25:03About what?
00:25:05I don't know.
00:25:06I couldn't hear anything clearly, and... until they started to shout at one another.
00:25:12Then I heard Kurak say that Reyga had insulted her honor and no Klingon would stand for that.
00:25:20I do not believe she killed him.
00:25:23These were words spoken in the heat of anger.
00:25:26Kurak is volatile... passionate... but not a killer.
00:25:35And, doctor, neither are we.
00:25:39Thank you.
00:25:42I knew he might be right about Kurak.
00:25:44Klingons make threats as a matter of course.
00:25:47On the other hand, sometimes they follow through.
00:26:01That looks like one of Dr. Reyga's shield configurations.
00:26:04Yes.
00:26:06Personal research.
00:26:14Even though this technology failed?
00:26:17No one has denied there is potential in the idea.
00:26:21Which you're now free to develop.
00:26:26Are you accusing me of something?
00:26:28No.
00:26:30But I want to know why you threatened Dr. Reyga.
00:26:34I warned Dr. Reyga that if he persisted in his slander he would pay the price.
00:26:41What was his accusation?
00:26:44I will not repeat his lies.
00:26:46Were they lies?
00:26:51Be careful, doctor.
00:26:55Insulting the honor of a Klingon can be extremely dangerous.
00:27:00Did Reyga make that mistake?
00:27:04( grunts )
00:27:07I have heard enough of your accusations!
00:27:09Now I will have your silence!
00:27:13( panting )
00:27:16Well, you're going to have to throw me a lot harder than that if you want to get it.
00:27:21Now... what did he accuse you of?
00:27:28Sabotage.
00:27:30Sabotage of the metaphasic shield?
00:27:32Was that why it failed?
00:27:33How would I know?!
00:27:35Did you sabotage the project?
00:27:41No.
00:27:43I did not.
00:27:52Good-bye, doctor.
00:27:56Kurak refused to say anything more.
00:27:59I wasn't sure if her silence was motivated by guilt
00:28:03or just Klingon pride.
00:28:05I was beginning to find out that investigating a murder
00:28:08was a little more perilous than I'd thought.
00:28:12And for everything I'd been through,
00:28:15I didn't have any more insight than I did before I started.
00:28:20Which brought me back to Reyga's body,
00:28:22because the more I thought about it
00:28:24the more it seemed that the answers had to be there.
00:28:28DNA traces... tissue anomalies...
00:28:30a wealth of forensic clues
00:28:32that could shed some light on the mystery.
00:28:35So, I made the decision.
00:29:11( sighs )
00:29:14Come.
00:29:17Beverly.
00:29:22Jean-Luc, I want to tell you something that you need to know but you're not going to like it.
00:29:28I did an autopsy on Dr. Reyga.
00:29:36What did you find?
00:29:39Nothing.
00:29:43I'm sorry.
00:29:44I know I shouldn't have done it.
00:29:46You most certainly should not.
00:29:49I made it clear to you that the family would not allow it.
00:29:52Not only have you disobeyed my orders but you've interfered in the burial rituals of another culture.
00:30:03You've put both of us in a very difficult position.
00:30:05The family will have to be notified.
00:30:08I don't doubt that they will react strongly.
00:30:10( sighs )
00:30:12And if the Ferengi government becomes involved-- as I'm certain they will-- this could have very significant repercussions.
00:30:19I'm not sure how much I can protect you.
00:30:24You don't have to, Jean-Luc.
00:30:28I knew what I was doing and I'm prepared to accept the consequences.
00:30:38I could tell that he was terribly disappointed in me
00:30:41and that was almost the hardest part of all.
00:30:44So that's the story.
00:30:46That's how I ended my career.
00:30:51Backhand volley.
00:30:52What?
00:30:53That's how I did it.
00:30:55Geordi kept hitting to my backhand at the net.
00:30:57Guinan, two people have died on this ship-- two lives that ended horribly-- and you're worried about your tennis game?
00:31:04Are you upset?
00:31:06I don't know-- you tell me.
00:31:08You're supposed to be wise.
00:31:09Well, if you are upset, why are you moping around here?
00:31:14Why don't you do something about it?
00:31:15I've done everything I could think of.
00:31:17It got me fired.
00:31:18Do you think Dr. Reyga killed himself?
00:31:21No.
00:31:22Do you think there's a murderer on board?
00:31:24Yes.
00:31:25Then why are you still sitting here?
00:31:27Don't you get it?
00:31:29If I start digging around again...
00:31:31You could be relieved of duty.
00:31:41Chief Medical Officer's Log, personal, Stardate 46830.1.
00:31:46I'll be leaving the ship tomorrow
00:31:48to attend the board of inquiry.
00:31:50That means I have less than 24 hours
00:31:52to get to the bottom of this mystery.
00:32:01What are you doing, Data?
00:32:03I am running additional diagnostics to make certain there was no permanent radiation damage to the shuttlecraft hull.
00:32:11You've studied Dr. Reyga's shield system.
00:32:14Do you think it could have been sabotaged?
00:32:16There was no evidence to support sabotage.
00:32:19Just consider the possibility.
00:32:23The system interlocks prevent access to the circuitry unless the shield emitter is active.
00:32:27Any attempt to sabotage the device would have to be made while the shield is in operation.
00:32:31The only time the shield was active was during Jo'bril's test flight.
00:32:36That is correct.
00:32:37It seems unlikely that Jo'bril would perform sabotage which would result in his own death.
00:32:42I agree.
00:32:44Would it be possible to sabotage the shuttle by remote during the flight?
00:32:49A phased ionic pulse beamed directly into the metaphasic projection matrix would result in a temporary system malfunction.
00:32:57Where on the Enterprise could you generate a phased ionic pulse?
00:33:00Such a pulse could be initiated from the lateral sensor array,
00:33:03Science Labs One, Four and 16, or any of the Bridge science stations.
00:33:08Let's assume for the moment that someone did send out a phased ionic pulse.
00:33:12What would have happened inside the shuttle?
00:33:14A tetryon field would be formed briefly in the cabin, temporarily disrupting the metaphasic shield.
00:33:21A tetryon field.
00:33:24If Jo'bril was exposed to a tetryon field it might have left residual traces in his tissue.
00:33:33Thanks, Data.
00:33:48Beverly?
00:33:49Yes?
00:33:50We've arranged for the shuttle to take you to Starbase 23.
00:33:53You can leave the ship at 0700 hours tomorrow.
00:33:55Thank you.
00:33:56About everything that's going on, I'm sorry.
00:33:59I'm sure it will all work out.
00:34:01Yes, of course.
00:34:02You know the inquiry is just a formality, and Captain Picard will do everything he can for you.
00:34:07I'm sure that'll help.
00:34:08But if you do anything foolish before that inquiry it's not going to look good for you.
00:34:12I don't know what you mean.
00:34:14I think you do know what I mean.
00:34:16The best thing for you to do right now is to go to your quarters and read a good book.
00:34:19If you do anything to make the situation worse it's going to be that much harder on you.
00:34:23Thank you, Commander. Your concern is noted.
00:34:25Beverly, I'm saying this to you as a friend.
00:34:30Yes, Will, I know, but, as a friend, please try to understand.
00:34:35I can't quit now and I don't want you to become involved in this.
00:34:47Computer, access ship's medical logs and download current autopsy files.
00:34:52COMPUTER: Autopsy files are restricted to active medical personnel only.
00:34:56Access denied.
00:34:57Damn.
00:34:58Dr. Crusher?
00:34:59What do you need the autopsy files for?
00:35:04Don't worry, I know I'm not supposed to be here.
00:35:07I'll go.
00:35:14Computer... access autopsy files.
00:35:20I assume you'll need the files on Dr. Reyga and Jo'bril.
00:35:23Alyssa...
00:35:24I can see how important this is to you.
00:35:26I don't want you to get involved in this.
00:35:28Is that an order, doctor?
00:35:30Yes.
00:35:31Too bad you're not my boss anymore.
00:35:34Thank you.
00:35:37So what do we do now?
00:35:39First, I want to review Jo'bril's physiology records.
00:35:41Then, I want to take another look at the body and I want to see if there's any tetryon traces.
00:35:44Let's do it.
00:36:03We need to run a tissue scan at the molecular level.
00:36:07Calibrate the scanner to pick up tetryon particles.
00:36:10Yes, doctor.
00:36:12Recalibration complete.
00:36:14Activate the scan.
00:36:20Nothing.
00:36:23Let's do it again.
00:36:24Use the enhanced- resolution mode to boost the sensitivity.
00:36:30There's something in the subdermal tissue.
00:36:31Narrow the scan field.
00:36:35Tetryon traces.
00:36:38Someone did sabotage the shield.
00:36:41That's a possibility, but this is very circumstantial evidence.
00:36:46There's only one way to know for certain.
00:36:57Captain.
00:36:59I'm concerned about Beverly.
00:37:01I've tried several times to talk to her but she's been avoiding me.
00:37:04I'm not surprised.
00:37:06This entire experience has been...
00:37:09DATA: Captain.
00:37:10An unscheduled launch is taking place in shuttle bay two.
00:37:17No idea.
00:37:18No one's filed a flight plan.
00:37:20On screen.
00:37:26RIKER: That's the Justman-- the shuttle Reyga modified.
00:37:29Open a hailing frequency.
00:37:37Dr. Crusher, what do you think you're doing?
00:37:40Testing a theory, Captain.
00:37:48A theory?
00:37:49I think Dr. Reyga's shield does work.
00:37:53Return to the ship immediately.
00:37:56I'm sorry.
00:37:59Mr. Worf, override the shuttle's computer.
00:38:01Return it to the shuttle bay.
00:38:02Aye, sir.
00:38:05Sir, she has isolated her navigational control.
00:38:08It will not be possible to establish remote operation.
00:38:11Get a tractor beam on her.
00:38:12WORF: I cannot establish a lock.
00:38:14She is too close to the star.
00:38:16Solar interference is too high.
00:38:18Mr. Data, what is her heading?
00:38:19Bearing 271 mark 4, sir.
00:38:21She is headed into the sun's corona.
00:38:28Computer, begin monitoring external temperature.
00:38:32COMPUTER: External temperature,
00:38:330.8 million Kelvins and rising.
00:38:37Beverly, what do you hope to accomplish?
00:38:39I think Dr. Reyga was right about his shield.
00:38:42The only reason it failed is because it was sabotaged and I'm going to prove it.
00:38:46But you can't be certain of that.
00:38:48You're betting your life on a hypothesis.
00:38:50I'm not wrong.
00:38:52COMPUTER: External temperature 1.9 million Kelvins.
00:39:03Sir, the shuttle is entering the corona.
00:39:07Beverly, what's happening?
00:39:10I'm all right.
00:39:11Computer, shield status.
00:39:14COMPUTER: Metaphasic shield holding.
00:39:16All systems within normal operating parameters.
00:39:20Congratulations, Dr. Reyga.
00:39:23You did it.
00:39:25Captain, I want you to post security guards around the three visiting scientists.
00:39:29One of them has to be responsible for sabotaging the first test.
00:39:33I think if we...
00:39:34( console beeping )
00:39:37Sir, we have lost contact.
00:39:47Crusher to Enterprise.
00:39:49I've lost you. Come in.
00:39:51CRUSHER: Justman to Enterprise. Come in.
00:39:55Enterprise, do you hear me? Come in.
00:39:58They cannot hear you.
00:40:01I have severed communications.
00:40:04How can you be alive?
00:40:05I'd think after your autopsy on me you'd know the answer to that.
00:40:09The slow rate of cellular decay.
00:40:12It is a natural result of physiostasis.
00:40:15Takarans can control their physiology at a cellular level.
00:40:19We can create the appearance of death.
00:40:22In the morgue, you were conscious the whole time.
00:40:25You heard everything we said.
00:40:27You knew everything we were going to do.
00:40:28Move away.
00:40:31Move away.
00:40:40What are you doing?
00:40:42I'm sending out a transient subspace signal.
00:40:45It will obscure the shuttle from the Enterprise sensors and they will interpret it as a warp engine breach.
00:40:52They will believe that you have been destroyed.
00:40:55I'd like to thank you, doctor.
00:40:57For what?
00:40:59All I wanted to do was discredit Reyga so that no one would pursue his technology except me, but you have given me more than I could have hoped.
00:41:10Now I can take the prototype itself back to Takara, where I will develop it into a weapon.
00:41:17All I have to do is wait here until the Enterprise is convinced you are dead and leaves.
00:41:28( groaning )
00:41:34( groaning )
00:42:11Captain, there is no indication of debris.
00:42:14However, the subspace signal indicates a warp engine breach.
00:42:18All right. Begin a phase-one search, starting with the shuttlecraft's last known coordinates.
00:42:23Plot a proximity course toward the star...
00:42:24Sir, we are picking up an object emerging from the corona.
00:42:33Crusher to Enterprise.
00:42:35I'm all right.
00:42:37Returning to the ship, and I finally have the answers I've been looking for.
00:42:45Chief Medical Officer's Log, Stardate 46831.2.
00:42:49I have been reinstated
00:42:51and I will be resuming my duties shortly.
00:42:53In the meantime, I have a personal matter to attend to.
00:42:58Hi, Guinan.
00:42:59Hello. Ooh... somebody's birthday?
00:43:03Not unless it's yours-- it's for you.
00:43:04For me? What's the occasion?
00:43:06It's a thank-you for giving me a good kick in the butt.
00:43:09Oh, now, I didn't...
00:43:12Now, I did some research.
00:43:13This is the latest design, state-of-the-art.
00:43:15It is specifically designed to cushion all vibrations, so you will never have tennis elbow again.
00:43:25Thank you, doctor.
00:43:26This looks like a great racket but, uh... I don't play tennis.
00:43:32Never have.
