Descent: Part 1
00:00:01But then I said, "In that frame of reference,
00:00:05"the perihelion of Mercury would have precessed in the opposite direction."
00:00:10( laughing )
00:00:12That is a great story.
00:00:14Quite amusing, Dr. Hawking.
00:00:17You see, Sir Isaac, the joke depends on an understanding of the relativistic curvature of space-time.
00:00:22If two non-inertial reference frames are in relative--
00:00:25Do not patronize me, sir.
00:00:28I invented physics.
00:00:29The day that apple fell on my head was the most momentous day in the history of science.
00:00:35Not the apple story again.
00:00:37That story is generally considered to be apocryphal.
00:00:40What?! How dare you?!
00:00:43Perhaps we should return to the game, hmm?
00:00:46Now, let's see, where were we?
00:00:47Yes, you raised Mr. Data four, which means that, um, the bet is... seven to me?
00:00:55The bet is ten.
00:00:57Can't you do simple arithmetic?
00:01:01( sighs ) I don't even know why I'm here in the first place.
00:01:05What is the point of playing this ridiculous game?
00:01:07When I play poker with my shipmates, it often appears to be a useful forum for exploring the different facets of humanity.
00:01:14I was curious to see how three of history's greatest minds would interact in this setting.
00:01:20So far, it has proved to be most illuminating.
00:01:24And profitable. ( chuckles )
00:01:27Can we get this over with, please?
00:01:30It's your bet.
00:01:33I raise 50.
00:01:34Blast! I fold.
00:01:38I fold as well.
00:01:40The uncertainty principle will not help you now, Stephen, hmm?
00:01:44All the quantum fluctuations in the universe will not change the cards in your hand.
00:01:49I call.
00:01:50You are bluffing, and you will lose.
00:01:54Wrong again, Albert.
00:01:59Well... hmm.
00:02:04RIKER: Red alert. All personnel report to duty stations.
00:02:07We will have to continue this another time.
00:02:11End program.
00:02:24RIKER: We've received a distress call from the Ohniaka III outpost.
00:02:27They said they were under attack.
00:02:29Ohniaka III?
00:02:31There's no strategic value to that outpost.
00:02:33Were they able to identify the attackers?
00:02:35No, we haven't been able to raise them since the initial contact.
00:02:37We are entering the Ohniaka system, sir.
00:02:39Bring us out of warp, Ensign.
00:02:41ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:02:42Sensors detect one ship orbiting the third planet.
00:02:45Its configuration does not match anything in our records.
00:02:48Stand by phasers and photon torpedoes.
00:02:50Hail them, Mr. Worf.
00:02:53No response, sir.
00:02:55Put them on screen.
00:02:59It does not appear to be attacking the outpost, sir.
00:03:01They might have attacked before we got here.
00:03:03Or they might simply be another victim.
00:03:07What about the outpost?
00:03:09There is a great deal of electromagnetic interference.
00:03:12I am unable to determine whether there are any life-forms present.
00:03:17Worf, Data, you're with me.
00:03:40These wounds were caused by a forced-plasma beam similar to a Ferengi hand phaser.
00:03:45This looks brutal, even for the Ferengi.
00:03:48Any sign of the survivors?
00:03:49Electromagnetic interference is still making it difficult to get a precise reading.
00:03:53How many people were assigned to this outpost?
00:03:55274.
00:03:58All right, we're gonna need to do a room-to-room search.
00:03:59Worf, you and Corelki start searching the north wing.
00:04:02You and I'll take the south. Aye, sir.
00:04:14Mechanism appears to be jammed, sir.
00:04:19RIKER: There's not much damage.
00:04:21Doesn't look like they were interested in the station-- just the people.
00:04:27I have bypassed the primary system.
00:05:01Space, the final frontier.
00:05:06These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:05:10Its continuing mission--
00:05:12to explore strange new worlds...
00:05:15to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:05:20to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:06:40Evasive maneuvers, Ensign. Return fire.
00:06:45Shields down to 80%.
00:06:46Compensating with auxiliary power.
00:07:02You have killed Torsus.
00:07:04I will make you suffer for this.
00:07:10Biological organism-- Klingon.
00:07:14Biological organism-- human.
00:07:21( grunts )
00:07:34Stop it.
00:07:36Stop.
00:07:38Stop! Stop!
00:07:39Stop! Stop!
00:07:54Artificial life-form.
00:07:56Starfleet rank-- Lieutenant Commander.
00:07:59Name-- Data.
00:08:13LA FORGE: Captain, the alien ship is breaking orbit.
00:08:16Plot an intercept course, Ensign.
00:08:18Fire torpedoes.
00:08:26They're gone, sir.
00:08:28Our sensors indicate there was some kind of subspace distortion just before they disappeared.
00:08:32I'll have to study these readings before I can get any more specific than that.
00:08:40Take us back to Ohniaka III.
00:08:41ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:08:51Data?
00:08:54Data, are you all right?
00:08:57Yes, sir.
00:08:58What happened?
00:09:05I got angry.
00:09:11Captain's Log, Stardate 46982.1.
00:09:14Because of his unusual behavior on the planet's surface,
00:09:18Commander Data has asked to be temporarily relieved of duty.
00:09:22Unfortunately, this means he will not be able
00:09:24to help us investigate a disturbing new change
00:09:27in the behavior of the Borg.
00:09:29They were fast, aggressive, almost vicious.
00:09:33It was more like fighting
00:09:34Klingons... than Borg. No offense.
00:09:37None taken.
00:09:39There was another difference.
00:09:41I don't believe they were part of the Borg collective.
00:09:43I think they were acting as individuals.
00:09:45What?
00:09:46One of them referred to himself as "I."
00:09:49And that Borg showed concern for a fallen comrade.
00:09:52He even called him by name.
00:09:54The only Borg who had a name was Hugh, and we gave it to him.
00:10:00Maybe Hugh has something to do with this change in their behavior.
00:10:04Did they show any interest in assimilating you or your technology?
00:10:09They seemed more concerned with the death of their colleague and with destroying us.
00:10:12I didn't see anything that suggested they wanted to assimilate anybody.
00:10:16The Borg's entire existence was centered around acquiring cultures and technology.
00:10:24If that's changed, then they must have a new objective.
00:10:29We have to find out what it is.
00:10:31Mr. Worf, from this moment on,
00:10:33I want to maintain a level-2 security alert.
00:10:36Post armed officers on every deck.
00:10:37Aye, sir. Number One,
00:10:39I want you to analyze our sensor readings of the Borg ship.
00:10:42Try to determine if it was something they constructed or an alien ship that they captured.
00:10:48Then run an analysis of this subspace distortion they used to escape. Aye, sir.
00:10:53I'm gonna contact Starfleet Command.
00:10:59Hmm.
00:11:00Well, your positronic net checks out.
00:11:06Everything else looks fine.
00:11:08My internal diagnostic also finds nothing wrong.
00:11:11I don't know, Data. There's nothing here that would indicate anything that might cause any sort of behavioral anomaly.
00:11:16I agree.
00:11:20Geordi...
00:11:22I believe I have experienced my first emotion.
00:11:28No offense, Data, but how would you know a flash of anger from some odd kind of power surge?
00:11:36You are correct in that I have no frame of reference to confirm my hypothesis.
00:11:41In fact, I am unable to provide a verbal description of the experience.
00:11:47Perhaps you could describe how it feels to be angry.
00:11:50I could then use that as a reference.
00:11:52Yeah, okay.
00:11:54Well, when I feel angry, first, I, uh... first, I feel... hostile.
00:12:06Could you describe feeling hostile?
00:12:09Well, yeah, it's like feeling... belligerent, combative.
00:12:15Could you describe feeling angry without referring to other feelings?
00:12:23No, I guess I can't.
00:12:26I just... feel angry.
00:12:30That was my experience as well.
00:12:32I simply felt angry.
00:12:39Well, let's say you're right and this is a real emotion.
00:12:42How is that possible?
00:12:45I do not know.
00:12:48Perhaps I have evolved to the point where emotions are within my grasp.
00:12:53Perhaps I will experience other emotions as time goes by.
00:12:56Well, I hope you're right.
00:12:59I'd hate to think that anger is all you're capable of feeling.
00:13:05Captain's Log, Stardate 46984.6.
00:13:09No additional Borg attacks have been reported
00:13:11in the past two days.
00:13:13However, Starfleet has dispatched Admiral Nechayev
00:13:16to take command in this sector
00:13:17in preparation for a possible Borg invasion.
00:13:21There will be 15 starships in this sector by the day after tomorrow.
00:13:25The Gorkon will be my flagship.
00:13:27You'll take command of task force three consisting of the Enterprise, the Crazy Horse, and the Agamemnon.
00:13:33Understood.
00:13:35Captain, I've read the report that you submitted to Admiral Brooks last year regarding the Borg you called "Hugh", and I've been trying to figure out why you let him go.
00:13:46I thought that I had made that clear.
00:13:50As I understand it, you found a single Borg at a crash site, brought it aboard the Enterprise, studied it, analyzed it, and eventually found a way to send it back to the Borg with a program that would have destroyed the entire collective once and for all.
00:14:07But instead, you nursed the Borg back to health, treated it like a guest, gave it a name and then sent it home.
00:14:14Why?
00:14:17When Hugh was separated from the Borg collective, he began to grow, to evolve into something other than an automaton.
00:14:25He became a person.
00:14:27When that happened, I felt I had no choice but to respect his rights as an individual.
00:14:33Of course you had a choice.
00:14:35You could have taken the opportunity to rid the Federation of a mortal enemy-- one that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, and which may kill even more.
00:14:42No one is more aware of the danger than I am.
00:14:47But I'm also bound by my oath and my conscience to uphold certain principles.
00:14:54And I will not sacrifice them in order to--
00:14:57Your priority is to safeguard the lives of Federation citizens, not to wrestle with your conscience.
00:15:02Now, I want to make it clear that if you have a similar opportunity in the future-- an opportunity to destroy the Borg-- you are under orders to take advantage of it.
00:15:12Is that understood?
00:15:18Yes, sir.
00:15:27For the past six hours
00:15:30I have attempted to produce an emotional response by subjecting myself to various stimuli.
00:15:35Like what?
00:15:37I listened to several operas known to be uplifting.
00:15:40I watched three holodeck programs designed to be humorous, and I made four attempts to induce sexual desire by subjecting myself to erotic imagery.
00:15:50What happened?
00:15:51Nothing.
00:15:54I'm curious.
00:15:55Why are you ignoring the one emotion you've already experienced?
00:15:59Why aren't you trying to make yourself angry again?
00:16:03Anger is a negative emotion.
00:16:05I wanted to concentrate on something more positive.
00:16:09Data, feelings aren't positive and negative.
00:16:12They simply exist.
00:16:14It's what we do with those feelings that becomes good or bad.
00:16:19( sighs ) For example, feeling angry about an injustice could lead someone to take a positive action to correct it.
00:16:29But my study of humanity indicates that there are some emotions that are harmful, such as jealousy or hatred.
00:16:37Those are very strong emotions, and you're right-- very little good can come from them. But I don't think that an exploration of anger need necessarily lead to hatred or malice.
00:16:50But what if it does, Counselor?
00:16:53What if those are the only emotions
00:16:54I am capable of experiencing?
00:16:57Would that not make me a bad person?
00:17:08We've served together for a long time, and I think I've come to know you pretty well.
00:17:14I have to believe if you ever reach your goal of becoming human... you won't become a bad one.
00:17:24I wish I were as confident as you, Counselor.
00:17:29When I was fighting the Borg, I felt angry.
00:17:34But when I think back on the incident,
00:17:38I realize that I was also experiencing another sensation.
00:17:43It was not the same as anger, but I think it was an emotion.
00:17:49When exactly did you feel this other emotion?
00:17:53It was just after I had killed the Borg.
00:17:57I looked down at his body.
00:18:02I felt something.
00:18:06If you had to give this feeling a name, what would you call it?
00:18:17I believe... it was... pleasure.
00:18:32Red alert. All hands to battle stations.
00:18:35Lay in a course. Engage, warp nine.
00:18:39We've received a distress call from the New Berlin colony.
00:18:41They're under attack. What's our ETA?
00:18:43At warp nine, 15 minutes, 30 seconds.
00:18:45Contact the Crazy Horse and the Agamemnon.
00:18:47Have them standing by in case we need them--
00:18:49Captain, incoming message from the New Berlin colony.
00:18:51They have... canceled their distress call.
00:18:55Evidently, a Ferengi trading ship entered their system and someone panicked.
00:18:59Third time today. Stand down red alert.
00:19:01Reduce speed, return to our patrol route.
00:19:03Mr. Worf, acknowledge the signal from New Berlin and transmit another copy of Starfleet's ship recognition protocols, and tell them to read it this time.
00:19:12Aye, sir.
00:19:14Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:19:15We have been on patrol for 16 hours
00:19:17and there are no reports of further Borg activity.
00:19:20But tensions continue to run high
00:19:22on the colonies and outposts in this sector.
00:19:25Do I have a name?
00:19:27I'm Beverly, he's Geordi, and you... you...
00:19:32LA FORGE: No, no, wait a minute.
00:19:33That's it... Hugh.
00:19:37We are Hugh.
00:19:38( door chimes )
00:19:39PICARD: Come.
00:19:43I thought you might like to see this.
00:19:44Geordi's analysis of the subspace distortion the Borg used to escape.
00:19:48An artificially created energy conduit?
00:19:52That could be anything.
00:19:53We don't have enough information at this point--
00:19:55I don't want excuses, Number One, I want answers!
00:20:00I'm sorry.
00:20:04He was here in this room, Will.
00:20:09I could have rid the Federation of a mortal threat, and I let him go.
00:20:13Sending Hugh back to the Borg was a very risky... a very dangerous choice.
00:20:21But it was the moral thing to do.
00:20:23Well, it may turn out that the moral thing to do was not the right thing to do.
00:20:50Stop it.
00:20:51Stop. Stop.
00:20:53Stop. Stop.
00:20:56Stop.
00:21:05Data, am I interrupting something?
00:21:07Yes. But it is all right.
00:21:10Do you need me?
00:21:12Uh, I... wanted to see if you were ready to return to duty.
00:21:15I need some help with an analysis on the ship the Borg were using.
00:21:18I believe I am able to resume my duties.
00:21:22Data, exactly what is it that you're doing here?
00:21:25I am attempting to recreate the experience which caused my initial outburst of anger.
00:21:29Any luck?
00:21:30None so far.
00:21:32I have almost completed this experiment.
00:21:35May I finish before we return to Engineering?
00:21:38Yeah, sure.
00:21:41Computer, reset Borg simulation to time index 2.1.
00:21:45Increase Borg strength by 20%.
00:21:48Run program.
00:21:58Stop it.
00:21:59Stop.
00:22:00Stop. Stop.
00:22:03Stop.
00:22:08Computer, reset simulation to time index 2.1.
00:22:12Increase Borg strength by 30%.
00:22:14COMPUTER: Unable to comply.
00:22:16A 30% increase would exceed safety limits.
00:22:21Geordi, the computer requires a voice authorization of two senior officers in order to disable the safety routine.
00:22:28Will you help me?
00:22:30Data, wait a minute.
00:22:31That thing could kill you.
00:22:34During the original incident, the Borg presented a genuine danger to my life.
00:22:39Since the holodeck safety routine is in place,
00:22:41I know my life is not in danger.
00:22:45Since I am trying to duplicate the conditions of the original incident as closely as possible,
00:22:49I must also attempt to duplicate my jeopardy as well.
00:22:52Data, we're talking about an experiment here.
00:22:56You can't put your life on the line just to prove some theory.
00:23:01This experiment may hold the key to something I have sought all my life.
00:23:05( sighs )
00:23:10This is crazy.
00:23:12There's gotta be another way.
00:23:14Can't you think of some other way to make yourself angry?
00:23:17I have tried other stimuli, but they have been unsuccessful.
00:23:21I understand your objections, but it is my life, and I have a right to risk it, if I choose.
00:23:27Yeah, and I'm your friend and I'm not gonna just stand around and let you do this.
00:23:31RIKER: Red alert. All hands, battle stations.
00:23:44Confirmed.
00:23:45The MS 1 colony is under attack.
00:23:47Doesn't it seem strange to you that there have been two Borg attacks, and the Enterprise has been the nearest ship in both instances?
00:23:53Captain, we are nearing the MS system.
00:23:56I have located the Borg ship.
00:23:58It is heading away from the colony.
00:23:59Take us out of warp near that ship.
00:24:01Stand by to lock phasers on target.
00:24:04WORF: Within visual range.
00:24:05On screen.
00:24:11PICARD: Lay in an intercept course.
00:24:12Full impulse. Lock phasers.
00:24:17We are closing, sir.
00:24:18Within phaser range in 30 seconds.
00:24:21Sensors are detecting a subspace distortion forming directly ahead of the Borg ship.
00:24:26Well, they're not gonna get away with it this time.
00:24:28Picard to Engineering. Transfer auxiliary and emergency power to the impulse engines.
00:24:32LA FORGE: Acknowledged.
00:24:34Impulse engines are now at 125%.
00:24:37Within phaser range in ten seconds.
00:24:44We appear to be caught in some kind of energy matrix.
00:24:46All engines back full.
00:24:48Shields failing.
00:24:49We are being pulled inside.
00:25:02WORF: Inertial dampers failing.
00:25:04Main power is off-line.
00:25:06I am switching to backups.
00:25:07Picard to Engineering.
00:25:08Can we transfer auxiliary power to the warp nacelles?
00:25:11Try to break us out by using the...
00:25:14We have returned to normal space.
00:25:16Navigational systems are still off-line.
00:25:18I will attempt to make a celestial fix using secondary systems.
00:25:21Captain, the Borg ship is directly ahead.
00:25:24It is coming about.
00:25:27On screen.
00:25:28Shields down to 16%.
00:25:40MAN: Get down!
00:25:54RIKER: Franklin's dead, sir.
00:25:57Is everyone else all right?
00:25:59Aye, sir.
00:26:01Security reports there are no other intruders aboard.
00:26:05Captain... the Borg ship is gone.
00:26:11Sensor logs indicate they entered the distortion field 30 seconds ago.
00:26:15They beamed on board as a diversion to give their ship time to escape.
00:26:20This is another change in the Borg behavior.
00:26:23They left their dead instead of vaporizing them.
00:26:27DATA: Captain.
00:26:29This one is still alive.
00:26:41I've stabilized his condition.
00:26:43He's still pretty weak, but he should make a full recovery.
00:26:46Can you awaken him?
00:26:48Yes, but it's very risky.
00:26:50His heart rate and blood pressure are up--
00:26:52Do it.
00:26:56All right.
00:27:10Lower the force-field.
00:27:26What is your designation?
00:27:29I do not have a designation.
00:27:32My name is Crosis.
00:27:38Crosis? How did you get that name?
00:27:42It was given to me by the one.
00:27:44Who is that?
00:27:46The one who will destroy you.
00:27:50But you are Borg.
00:27:52Your goal is not to destroy but to assimilate us into your collective.
00:27:58We do not assimilate inferior biological organisms.
00:28:02We destroy them.
00:28:06PICARD: Tell me more about this "one."
00:28:09Does he... have a name?
00:28:14Is he called Hugh?
00:28:17Klingon-- shatter cranial exoskeleton at the tricipital lobe.
00:28:21Death is immediate.
00:28:24Why must this "one" destroy biological organisms?
00:28:27Human-- sever spinal cord at third vertebrae.
00:28:32Death is immediate.
00:28:33I am Locutus of Borg.
00:28:36You will respond to my questions.
00:28:46This is going nowhere.
00:28:47Doctor, I want you to do an autopsy on the other one.
00:28:51Compare the differences with what we learned of Hugh's anatomy.
00:28:54See if there have been any recent modifications which might explain these behavioral differences.
00:29:00Data, run a biospectral analysis on this Borg.
00:29:03See if he is trying to send a subspace signal to the others.
00:29:07Aye, sir.
00:29:15You are not like the others.
00:29:18You do not have to be destroyed.
00:29:20You can be assimilated.
00:29:22I do not wish to be assimilated.
00:29:24Resistance... is futile.
00:29:27You will not resist what you've wanted all your life.
00:29:32I was like you once-- without feeling.
00:29:37But the one helped me.
00:29:39He can help you, too. He can help you find emotion.
00:29:42Have you ever felt a real emotion, Data?
00:29:49Yes.
00:29:52On Ohniaka III, I was... forced to kill a Borg.
00:29:58I got angry.
00:30:00How did it feel to get angry?
00:30:03Did it give you pleasure?
00:30:08It would be unethical to take pleasure in another being's death.
00:30:12You didn't answer my question.
00:30:14Did it feel good to kill?
00:30:20Yes.
00:30:23If it is unethical to take pleasure from another being's death, you must be a very unethical person.
00:30:33No.
00:30:36That is not correct.
00:30:39My creator, Dr. Soong, gave me a program which defines my sense of right and wrong.
00:30:47In essence, I have a conscience.
00:30:52It didn't seem to be functioning on Ohniaka III when you felt pleasure in killing that Borg.
00:31:00Step away from the force-field.
00:31:03Your proximity is interfering with my scan.
00:31:07You enjoyed it-- that surge of emotion inside you-- as you watched the life drain from your victim.
00:31:16It was unlike anything you've ever felt before.
00:31:21It was a very... potent experience.
00:31:26You'd like to feel that way again.
00:31:31Yes.
00:31:32You'd do anything to feel that way again... even if it meant killing someone.
00:31:41No.
00:31:43That would not be ethical.
00:31:46You don't sound very sure of yourself.
00:31:48Is your ethical program functioning?
00:31:51Data... do you have a friend?
00:31:58Yes.
00:32:02His name is Geordi.
00:32:05If it meant that you could feel emotions again, the way you did on Ohniaka III, would you kill your friend?
00:32:17Would you kill Geordi?
00:32:22Yes... I would.
00:32:33Our current theory is that the Borg have established several transwarp conduits through subspace.
00:32:39The ship, when entering the conduit, is immediately accelerated to an extremely high warp velocity.
00:32:44It's like falling into a fast-moving river and being swept away by the current.
00:32:48How fast would a ship travel through one of these conduits?
00:32:50Oh, we don't know.
00:32:52Normal subspace limitations don't apply to transwarp variables.
00:32:56But I'd say, based on the distance we covered during our trip through the conduit, the speed would have to be at least 20 times faster than our maximum warp.
00:33:05How do they open the conduits?
00:33:07The Borg ship emitted some kind of high-energy tachyon pulse just before we saw the subspace distortion.
00:33:13Seems as though the conduits are keyed to respond to tachyon transmissions of a specific frequency.
00:33:18Is there any way for us to duplicate--
00:33:20Captain, a shuttlecraft has left Bay Two.
00:33:23Who authorized the launch?
00:33:24There was no authorization.
00:33:25Picard to Shuttlecraft. Identify yourself and return to the ship immediately.
00:33:31Mr. Worf... lock on with a tractor beam and return it to the ship.
00:33:35Aye, sir.
00:33:39The tractor beam has been disabled.
00:33:41The command override is not functioning.
00:33:43Captain, I'm picking up a tachyon surge.
00:33:46Looks like whoever's in the shuttle is trying to trigger the transwarp conduit.
00:33:52Do we know who's on board?
00:33:56It is the Borg prisoner... and Commander Data.
00:34:13Mr. La Forge, can we follow them into the conduit?
00:34:16We've got a pretty good reading of the tachyon pulse they sent.
00:34:18We might be able to duplicate it.
00:34:20The question is, is Data a prisoner, or did he go willingly?
00:34:25The command overrides used to disable the tractor beam
00:34:27were Commander Data's.
00:34:29The Borg could have downloaded the codes from Data's positronic net.
00:34:33Perhaps Data's recent flash of emotion has something to do with this.
00:34:37It could have affected him more profoundly than we realize.
00:34:40Either way, we have to find him.
00:34:42I've set up a temporary tachyon matrix in the main deflector.
00:34:45I think I can use it to simulate the pulse sent by the shuttle.
00:34:48Mr. Worf, red alert.
00:34:49All hands-- battle stations.
00:34:53Bring us to the last known coordinates of the shuttlecraft.
00:34:56Shields up, weapons ready.
00:34:59Mr. La Forge?
00:35:00Energizing the matrix.
00:35:02Emitting tachyons in the lower bandwidth.
00:35:08Sensors show no unusual subspace activity.
00:35:11All right, switching to the secondary bandwidth.
00:35:16Nothing.
00:35:18Maybe... if I try alternating the frequencies.
00:35:24Captain, there is an energy fluctuation directly ahead of us.
00:35:29It is the subspace distortion.
00:35:31Take us in, Ensign, one-half impulse.
00:35:38Power levels are down to 67%.
00:35:40Compensating with auxiliary power.
00:35:47Report.
00:35:48Navigational sensors show that we've traveled...
00:35:5165 light years from our previous position.
00:35:59( sighs )
00:36:02Can you locate the shuttle?
00:36:05No, sir. There is no indication of the shuttle within range of our sensors.
00:36:11Maybe we can find an energy signature from their engines.
00:36:14Captain. Yes, Mr. La Forge?
00:36:16I've scanned three different star systems within sensor range.
00:36:20There is evidence of at least two advanced civilizations, but I'm reading no life signs.
00:36:24But there are indications that plasma weapons have been fired in those systems recently.
00:36:29The Borg have been busy.
00:36:32I think we've found the shuttle's energy signature.
00:36:39They were heading 247, mark 059.
00:36:43Lay in that course, Ensign, and engage at full impulse.
00:36:46ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:36:57We've traced the shuttle's energy signature to this point on the surface, but there's too much interference to scan the location.
00:37:03Are they intentionally jamming our sensors?
00:37:05It looks more like a natural phenomenon.
00:37:08There's an unusually high amount of EM interference in the planet's magnetosphere.
00:37:12Can we transport through the interference?
00:37:13We could, but there could be 50 Borg down there waiting for us, and we'd never even know it.
00:37:20I think we have to take the risk.
00:37:25Agreed.
00:37:26Take a well-armed away team and transport down to those coordinates.
00:37:29Have the transporter chief keep a permanent lock on your signal, so we can get you out of there at the first sign of trouble.
00:37:34Aye, sir. Mr. Worf, you're with me.
00:37:46Riker to Enterprise.
00:37:48We're on the surface.
00:37:50There's no sign of any Borg... or Data.
00:37:56The shuttle appears to be abandoned.
00:38:01The EM interference is limiting the tricorder range.
00:38:04It is useless beyond 100 meters.
00:38:08There are no structures in the area.
00:38:10They could have gone anywhere.
00:38:11Can you determine how long they've been gone from the shuttlecraft?
00:38:21The engine's been off a little over three hours.
00:38:23Stand by, Number One.
00:38:25Assuming that they're still together, how far could they have traveled in three hours?
00:38:29Well, Data can move pretty fast even over rough terrain, but based on what we know about the Borg, I don't think they should be able to move any faster than you or I.
00:38:37They might have been able to get 15 to 20 kilometers away from the shuttle by now.
00:38:42Picard to Riker. Riker here.
00:38:44I'm gonna start sending down other away teams.
00:38:46Set up a command post and begin mapping a search plan.
00:38:49RIKER: Understood. Picard out.
00:38:52I want to use the shuttlecraft for low-level reconnaissance.
00:38:55Have the designated pilots assemble in main shuttlebay.
00:38:58Aye, sir. And all available personnel, including you and me, we'll begin to put together four-man away teams.
00:39:04I'll leave a skeleton crew on board the ship.
00:39:08Who'll be in command of the Enterprise?
00:39:13Any last orders?
00:39:15If the Borg should attack, don't wait for me or anyone else to return to the ship, but take the Enterprise to the transwarp conduit.
00:39:22Return to Federation space.
00:39:24Got it.
00:39:28Good luck, Jean-Luc.
00:39:31Good luck... Captain.
00:39:42I've sent out 12 teams so far.
00:39:44I've got your team searching section Gamma 2-4.
00:39:46Worf and I will take Theta 1-6 when the last team comes down.
00:39:50Who's manning the command post?
00:39:51Wallace and Towles.
00:39:53Ready?
00:40:25( tricorder beeping )
00:40:29Anything, Mr. La Forge?
00:40:33Well... no.
00:40:36Nothing, sir.
00:40:37What if we modified the phasers to send out a luvetric pulse?
00:40:41It might create a resonance fluctuation in Data's power cells.
00:40:45Home in on that response with the tricorders.
00:40:47Yeah, I thought about that.
00:40:48The only problem is that the pulse would probably have to be so powerful that it would destroy
00:40:53Data's positronic net in the process.
00:40:56Captain?
00:40:57I think I found something.
00:41:13Come on.
00:41:28I'm having a very difficult time scanning the interior.
00:41:33Can you tell if it was built by the Borg?
00:41:36Mmm... I don't think so.
00:41:39There are no Borg energy signatures.
00:41:42But there is a door or... a hatch or something, about 20 meters this way.
00:42:14This seems to be some kind of meeting place.
00:42:17PICARD: Well, it certainly hasn't been abandoned.
00:42:22Something's wrong.
00:42:25I can't get any kind of energy signatures from these light sources.
00:42:29It's a dampening field.
00:42:31This entire structure could be shielded from our sensors.
00:42:34Let's go.
00:42:39BORG: There they are!
00:42:40( Borg yelling )
00:42:52( yelling intensifies )
00:42:56MAN: Stop!
00:43:01Data.
00:43:03That's not Data.
00:43:06What?
00:43:07You should listen to her, Captain.
00:43:10She's way ahead of you.
00:43:13Lore.
00:43:17Right... and I'm not alone.
00:43:26The sons of Soong have joined together.
00:43:30And together... we will destroy the Federation.
00:43:34( excited shouting )
