Descent: Part 2
00:00:01ANNOUNCER: Last time on Star Trek: The Next Generation...
00:00:05Stop.
00:00:06Stop!
00:00:07Stop!
00:00:10It was just after I had killed the Borg.
00:00:13I felt something.
00:00:14I believe... it was... pleasure.
00:00:19I don't believe they were part of the Borg collective.
00:00:22One of them referred to himself as "I."
00:00:23The only Borg who had a name was Hugh.
00:00:26We are Hugh.
00:00:28PICARD: He was here in this room.
00:00:29I could have rid the Federation of a mortal threat and I let him go.
00:00:33The Borg have established several transwarp conduits through subspace.
00:00:44DATA: Get down!
00:00:47I was like you once-- without feeling but the one helped me.
00:00:54He can help you, too.
00:00:55He can help you find emotion.
00:00:58You will not resist what you've wanted all your life.
00:01:01If the Borg should attack don't wait for me or anyone else to return to the ship but take the Enterprise to the transwarp conduit.
00:01:08Return to Federation space.
00:01:10( Borg chattering )
00:01:12MAN: Stop!
00:01:17Lore.
00:01:19The sons of Soong have joined together.
00:01:23And together we will destroy the Federation.
00:01:27ANNOUNCER: And now, the conclusion.
00:01:36What do you think of my followers, Picard?
00:01:42Impressive, aren't they?
00:01:44I'm not particularly impressed.
00:01:47All you've done is teach them to enjoy killing.
00:01:50DATA: You are wrong, Captain.
00:01:52My brother and I serve a much higher purpose.
00:01:56Data, I can sense feelings in you.
00:01:59Yes. My brother has made that possible.
00:02:04He gave you the chip-- the one Dr. Soong made for you.
00:02:08( scoffs )
00:02:09No, no, no, no, no.
00:02:12I still have the emotional program my father designed.
00:02:15I wouldn't want to give it up.
00:02:17It's what has given me such a strong sense of family-- an intense desire to reunite with my dear brother.
00:02:24How did he do it, Data?
00:02:26What made you decide to come here?
00:02:28I am talking to you, Picard.
00:02:31I will tell you all you need to know.
00:02:33You're controlling him and you've corrupted the Borg.
00:02:35( sighing )
00:02:39You simply don't understand, do you?
00:02:42You have no idea of what has happened here-- how I found my true calling how the Borg found something to believe in.
00:02:51I would like to learn about that but I want Data to tell us.
00:02:55I told you,
00:02:57I will tell you what you need to know.
00:02:59How about that, Data?
00:03:01He won't even let you talk.
00:03:04Do not try to drive a wedge between us, Captain.
00:03:07I am loyal to my brother.
00:03:10LORE: You see, Picard?
00:03:12He's not your pawn anymore.
00:03:15I've helped him to break free just as I've helped them.
00:03:20Look at them.
00:03:23Look at what I've helped them become.
00:03:26They're no longer simply mindless automatons.
00:03:28They're passionate.
00:03:30Alive.
00:03:31Are you saying that you caused them to become individuals?
00:03:35No. You did that-- you and your friends.
00:03:38All I did was clean up the mess you made when that Borg you befriended returned to his ship.
00:03:44Hugh interfaced with the others and transferred his sense of individuality to them.
00:03:48It nearly destroyed them.
00:03:49Data, do you remember when Hugh was on board the Enterprise?
00:03:53Do you remember what you were like then?
00:03:55That doesn't matter.
00:03:57It matters to me.
00:03:58I want to know what has happened to Data.
00:04:00What's important is what I've done here-- how I found my calling.
00:04:06I know now why I was created.
00:04:08No one can ever take that away from me.
00:04:13Without me, they would have perished.
00:04:16When I stumbled on their ship, they were lost, disoriented.
00:04:20They had no idea how to function as individuals.
00:04:24They couldn't even navigate their own vessel.
00:04:26They had lost their sense of purpose.
00:04:30Well, I gave them their purpose and they gave me mine.
00:04:35The Borg aspire to the perfection my brother and I represent-- fully artificial life-forms.
00:04:43We are their future.
00:04:45The reign of biological life-forms is coming to an end.
00:04:51You, Picard... and those like you...
00:04:57... are obsolete.
00:05:00Take them, brother.
00:05:03( buzz of Borg conversation )
00:05:44Space, the final frontier.
00:05:48These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:05:53Its continuing mission--
00:05:54to explore strange new worlds...
00:05:58to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:06:02to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:06:08♪♪
00:07:03CRUSHER: Acting Captain's log, supplemental.
00:07:06The skeleton crew left on board the Enterprise
00:07:08is unable to help in the search for Commander Data.
00:07:11The planet's unusual EM field
00:07:13is interfering with the ship's sensors
00:07:15severely limiting their effectiveness.
00:07:17Ensign, we need to modify the sensor array to filter out these EM pulses.
00:07:21Can you do that?
00:07:23Yes, sir.
00:07:24I-I think so.
00:07:28What's your name?
00:07:30Taitt, sir.
00:07:31I don't think I've seen you before.
00:07:33I was just posted here six weeks ago.
00:07:35Well, Taitt, bet you never thought you'd be serving as tactical officer after only six weeks.
00:07:40No, sir, I sure didn't.
00:07:43I think I've filtered out some of the sensor noise.
00:07:45I'll bring the modifications on line.
00:07:46Good work.
00:07:47Riker to Enterprise.
00:07:48Go ahead, Will.
00:07:49I can't contact the captain.
00:07:51It could just be interference, but I'd like to be sure.
00:07:53Understood.
00:07:55Enterprise to Captain Picard.
00:07:58Crusher to Picard.
00:08:00I'm not getting a com signal from anyone on the captain's team.
00:08:03The last time they checked in they were investigating a structure in section Gamma 2-5.
00:08:07Sir, I'm picking up a vessel closing in on our location.
00:08:12Is it a Borg ship?
00:08:13It seems to match the configuration of the ship the Enterprise encountered at Ohniaka III.
00:08:17Red alert.
00:08:19How long before they're in weapons range?
00:08:22Uh, about 90 seconds.
00:08:23No, no, make that 70 seconds.
00:08:25Crusher to transporter room three.
00:08:26Salazar here, sir.
00:08:27Start transporting the away teams off of the surface.
00:08:30Aye, sir.
00:08:31Use the transporters in the cargo bay if you have to.
00:08:34I want those teams up here as fast as possible.
00:08:36Armstrong, you and the others prepare to beam up. Aye, sir.
00:08:39Beverly, Worf and I will stay down here and look for the captain's team.
00:08:42I'm not going to leave you down there.
00:08:43You pull as many people off the surface as you can and get back to the transwarp conduit.
00:08:47The captain's orders were to get the Enterprise back to Federation space.
00:08:51Acknowledged.
00:08:52Riker out.
00:08:53Prepare to leave orbit.
00:08:55Sir, the Borg ship is powering up its forward weapons array.
00:08:58They'll be in firing range in... in 20 seconds.
00:09:01Salazar, how many people do we still have down there?
00:09:0573, sir.
00:09:07Put the Borg ship on screen.
00:09:09Should I raise shields, sir?
00:09:10Not yet.
00:09:11I want to keep bringing people up until the last possible second.
00:09:16TAITT: Ten seconds.
00:09:17Stand by to raise shields and break orbit on my mark.
00:09:20Five seconds.
00:09:23Mark.
00:09:29Shields down to 70%.
00:09:30Establish a frequency shift firing pattern and return fire.
00:09:34Uh... right.
00:09:41Direct hit. No damage.
00:09:43Helm, set a course for the conduit, maximum warp.
00:09:46ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:09:53Sir, the Borg aren't following us.
00:09:56Salazar, how many people did we leave behind?
00:09:5947, sir.
00:10:03Another minute and we would have had them.
00:10:08Riker to any team leader.
00:10:09Lieutenant Powell here, sir.
00:10:12Round up everybody who was left behind take cover and try to avoid any contact with the Borg.
00:10:17Aye, sir.
00:10:18Riker out.
00:10:21Even if Beverly can get back to Federation space it will be a few days until Starfleet can get any ships here.
00:10:29Until then, we're on our own.
00:10:37Data, you must realize that something has happened to you.
00:10:41The Data I know would never have agreed to be a willing party to Lore's plan.
00:10:46I now realize that my life aboard the Enterprise was a waste.
00:10:52My quest to become human misguided-- an evolutionary step in the wrong direction.
00:11:01Data, all I'm sensing from you is anger and hatred.
00:11:04Have you felt any other emotions?
00:11:07There are no other emotions.
00:11:08Data, just because you haven't experienced certain emotions doesn't mean they don't exist.
00:11:13Lore is only feeding you the negative ones.
00:11:15Counselor Troi herself told me that feelings are not negative or positive.
00:11:19It is how we act on them that makes them good or bad.
00:11:22Fine but what about the things that Lore is proposing?
00:11:27What about the lives that have already been lost?
00:11:29You simply do not understand.
00:11:32In a quest such as ours, sacrifices have to be made.
00:11:36It is regrettable but the greater good must be served.
00:11:41Give me your VISOR.
00:11:44Why?
00:11:49Give it to me or I will take it by force.
00:11:53( sighing )
00:12:06I am not your puppet anymore.
00:12:29Sir, we've reached the coordinates of the conduit.
00:12:32The tachyon matrix is energized and ready to go and Lieutenant Barnaby has returned from the surface.
00:12:37He'll be relieving me.
00:12:38Right. Stand by to trigger the conduit.
00:12:40Taitt, I want you to stay on the bridge.
00:12:43I'll need a science officer at the aft station.
00:12:46Yes, sir.
00:12:48Helm, set a course to return to the planet.
00:12:51ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:12:53I'm not leaving those people stranded back there.
00:12:55An emergency buoy can transmit a copy of our log entries to Starfleet just as easily as we can.
00:13:00Ensign, prepare a buoy and launch it when ready.
00:13:02Aye, sir.
00:13:03CRUSHER: Lieutenant, open the conduit.
00:13:06TAITT: Launching buoy now, sir.
00:13:12Lieutenant, scan for any Borg ships between here and the planet.
00:13:16Sensors detect no vessels.
00:13:19We have to assume the ship that attacked us is still in orbit.
00:13:22How long will we have before they can detect us and intercept?
00:13:25If their sensors function as well as ours it could be as little as 30 seconds.
00:13:30Crusher to Salazar.
00:13:32How long will it take to get the rest of the crew off the surface?
00:13:35One minute should do it.
00:13:36We don't have one minute.
00:13:37How much can you shave off that?
00:13:38If I could get a good lock on them quickly
00:13:40I might be able to do it in 45 or 50 seconds.
00:13:44We need to buy ourselves 15 seconds.
00:13:48Lieutenant, is there any way we can use the planet as a barrier to keep the Borg from realizing we're in orbit?
00:13:54We can enter orbit while they're on the far side of the planet.
00:13:58And if we delay dropping out of warp until the last possible instant we could gain a few more seconds.
00:14:02TAITT: If your calculations are even slightly off, we'd hit the atmosphere.
00:14:07I'll just have to be sure my calculations are accurate,
00:14:09Ensign.
00:14:16Let's do it.
00:14:18Helm, hard about.
00:14:19ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:14:22Still no sign of the structure.
00:14:23With all this interference it could be 100 meters away and we wouldn't know it.
00:14:27This could take hours.
00:14:29I'm picking up a faint energy reading.
00:14:32Residual thermal traces.
00:14:33Somebody stood here.
00:14:36The decay rate indicates it could be human.
00:14:37They took this path.
00:14:45There you are, brother.
00:14:46Here is the VISOR.
00:14:48May I ask why you wanted it.
00:14:51Thought it might look good on me.
00:14:54What do you think?
00:15:00Maybe we should work on your sense of humor, brother.
00:15:05Actually, I was thinking La Forge's implants might make him an ideal test subject for my experiment.
00:15:13All of the Borg you have experimented on so far have suffered extensive brain damage.
00:15:19Using the humans to perfect the procedure will allow us to prevent any further Borg deaths.
00:15:29I understand.
00:15:30Good.
00:15:37What is it?
00:15:39This Borg has disconnected himself from the others.
00:15:42He would not let me hear his thoughts.
00:15:45( sighs )
00:15:48I've asked you to stay linked to Crosis at all times.
00:15:53You know that, don't you?
00:15:54Yes.
00:15:57I know this must be difficult for you.
00:16:01I know how uncertain you must feel.
00:16:04All of these sensations are new and they can be frightening.
00:16:08Isn't that right?
00:16:09Yes.
00:16:13I have doubts.
00:16:14Of course, you do.
00:16:16It's only natural.
00:16:18No one is going to blame you for that.
00:16:21But in order to lose those doubts to keep fear and confusion away
00:16:28I need you to remain linked to the others so that their strength and their confidence can help you.
00:16:37I need you, Goval.
00:16:40I need you to help me build a future for the Borg.
00:16:44I can't do it without you.
00:16:47Will you help me?
00:16:50Yes, I will.
00:16:59Lore must have told Data to take my VISOR because he realized I could see a carrier wave that was radiating from him.
00:17:05A carrier wave?
00:17:07Is that how he's manipulating Data?
00:17:08I think what's happening is that Lore is tapping into the chip he stole from Dr. Soong and somehow he's found a way to transmit part of that emotional program to Data.
00:17:18But the only emotions Data seems to feel are negative.
00:17:21Yeah, I'm sure that's intentional.
00:17:23But in order for Data to be affected by those emotions
00:17:26Lore would have had to disable his ethical program first.
00:17:29Can we reactivate it?
00:17:31If I can generate a phased Kedion pulse at the right frequency, that would trigger
00:17:35Data's subsystems, and reboot the program.
00:17:38And although Lore would still be feeding him negative emotions at least Data might listen to us.
00:17:44Right.
00:17:45I think it's worth a try.
00:17:48So, got any ideas on how we generate a Kedion pulse?
00:17:52( force-field deactivates )
00:17:56Data, where are you taking him?
00:17:58That is not your concern.
00:17:59Data, wait. Let us talk to you.
00:18:08( distant voices )
00:18:10( mechanical whirring )
00:18:29Commander.
00:18:34( footsteps approaching )
00:19:04Hugh?
00:19:05Why are you here Commander Riker?
00:19:08Hasn't the crew of the Enterprise caused enough damage already?
00:19:18So, you blame us for what has happened to the Borg?
00:19:20You gave me a sense of individuality changed me, then sent me back to the collective.
00:19:25You must have known that change would be passed on to others.
00:19:28We considered it.
00:19:30We knew it was a possibility.
00:19:31Then you made it possible for Lore to dominate us.
00:19:34I cannot accept that.
00:19:36Lore is only one.
00:19:37The Borg could have stopped him.
00:19:39You don't know the condition we were in when he found us.
00:19:42Before my experience on the Enterprise the Borg were a single-minded collective.
00:19:48The voices in our heads were smooth and flowing but after I returned those voices began to change.
00:19:54They became uneven, discordant.
00:19:58For the first time individual Borg had differing ideas about how to proceed.
00:20:04We couldn't function.
00:20:06Some Borg fought each other.
00:20:08Others simply shut themselves down.
00:20:10Many starved to death.
00:20:11And then, Lore came along.
00:20:13You probably can't imagine what it is like to be so lost and frightened that you will listen to any voice which promises change.
00:20:19Even if that voice insists on controlling you?
00:20:22That's what we wanted-- someone to show us a way out of confusion.
00:20:26Lore promised clarity and purpose.
00:20:30At the beginning, he seemed like a savior.
00:20:33The promise of becoming a superior race-- of becoming fully artificial-- was compelling.
00:20:39We gladly did everything he asked of us but, after a while, it became clear that Lore had no idea how to keep his promise.
00:20:46That's when he began talking about the need for us to make sacrifices.
00:20:51Before we realized it, this was the result.
00:20:56RIKER: What happened to them?
00:20:58Lore began to experiment trying to remake us in his image.
00:21:03This is the result of my encounter with the Enterprise, Commander.
00:21:06So you can see
00:21:07I don't particularly welcome your presence here.
00:21:10I'm sorry you feel that way.
00:21:12We just came to get our people.
00:21:14We won't cause you any more trouble.
00:21:18Tell me about my friend.
00:21:19Friend?
00:21:21The human called Geordi.
00:21:31I wish I could tell you about him.
00:21:33We think he may be held inside the compound.
00:21:39I cannot help you.
00:21:41I cannot risk our being discovered.
00:21:44Could you at least show us a way into the compound?
00:21:50These caverns lead to tunnels which run beneath the compound.
00:21:53Some of them connect with the environmental control ducts.
00:21:57Show us.
00:21:58If we could determine the geography of the compound we could form a rescue plan.
00:22:06( beeping )
00:22:08Data?
00:22:15Who's there?
00:22:16( Picard's voice ): Geordi.
00:22:18Captain...
00:22:19( Picard's voice ): Shh. We're getting out of here.
00:22:23Come on, hurry.
00:22:24Data was just here.
00:22:26I think he went to get something.
00:22:28( normal voice ): Too late.
00:22:30My brother suggested
00:22:31I try to develop my sense of humor.
00:22:33What do you think?
00:22:36I think it needs a little work.
00:22:43( whirring )
00:22:44What's happening?
00:22:46I'm attempting to neutralize your pain receptors.
00:22:52What are you going to do to me?
00:22:54I'm implanting nano-cortical fibers in your cerebrum.
00:22:57They are designed to learn and mimic your neural firing patterns.
00:23:02Once they are in place
00:23:03I will destroy the existing brain cells.
00:23:06Then we will see if the artificial neural network is able to take over your cognitive functions.
00:23:10Data, listen.
00:23:12Lore is controlling you.
00:23:15He's transmitting a carrier wave, which is affecting your positronic matrix.
00:23:20If the procedure is successful your cognitive processing functions will be considerably improved.
00:23:26Don't you care that he's manipulating you?
00:23:29However, there is a 60% chance you will not survive the procedure.
00:23:34I don't care much for those odds.
00:23:36Hmm...
00:23:38They are cause for concern.
00:23:41However, I still have Counselor Troi and Captain Picard.
00:23:44Odds are at least one of the procedures will be successful.
00:23:53TROI: Help me!
00:24:00He tried to escape.
00:24:01The force-field sent him into neural shock.
00:24:05If he dies, Lore will blame you.
00:24:19( groaning )
00:24:24See if the corridor is empty.
00:24:27( gasping )
00:24:30Drop it, or I'll break his neck.
00:24:46Take him.
00:24:52What have you done to him?
00:24:54I will be back for him later.
00:25:00Geordi, are you in pain?
00:25:03No, I'm just a little dizzy.
00:25:09I was able to take part of a transceiver from the guard's interlink system.
00:25:15I think that it uses some kind of phased pulse technology.
00:25:21Do you think it could be modified to generate a Kedion pulse that would reboot Data's program?
00:25:27Yeah. Yeah, it's possible.
00:25:30See if you can locate the phase modulation circuitry.
00:25:32I'll watch the door.
00:25:40( clicking )
00:25:42( beeping )
00:25:45All right.
00:25:47I think that I've found it.
00:25:49Okay, good.
00:25:50Now, do you see anything that we might be able to use as a flux inhibitor?
00:25:55Hmm...
00:26:00Sensors still can't locate the Borg ship.
00:26:03I'm trying to filter out the interference.
00:26:05We'll be within transporter range in 19 seconds.
00:26:08I'm starting to get sensor resolution.
00:26:11CRUSHER: There's the ship.
00:26:12We'll enter orbit here.
00:26:14Helm, new course-- heading 052 mark 7.
00:26:18ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:26:19Stand by to drop out of warp in eight seconds.
00:26:21TAITT: Once we're in orbit we should have about 45 seconds before they intercept us.
00:26:25Let's hope it's enough time.
00:26:27BARNABY: Emergency deceleration in five seconds.
00:26:29Hold on.
00:26:32Report.
00:26:33We're in standard orbit, sir.
00:26:34The Borg ship is on the planet's far side and is moving to intercept.
00:26:38Bridge to transporter rooms, begin evacuations.
00:26:42The Borg will be in weapons range in 32 seconds.
00:26:45We still can't locate Captain Picard's team and there's no sign of Commander Riker or Lieutenant Worf.
00:26:50Crusher to Salazar. Report.
00:26:53We're pulling the last teams off right now but there are six people still unaccounted for.
00:26:57CRUSHER: Keep trying.
00:27:01BARNABY: Borg ship is powering up its weapons array.
00:27:03Come on, Chief, it's now or never.
00:27:05TAITT: They're preparing to fire.
00:27:06Raise shields.
00:27:07( explosion )
00:27:10BARNABY: The port nacelle has been hit.
00:27:11Helm, get us out of here.
00:27:12ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:27:13We've lost warp engines.
00:27:15Evasive maneuvers, full impulse.
00:27:22TAITT: Shields down to 80%.
00:27:24Fire phasers.
00:27:26Direct hit.
00:27:28No damage to the Borg ship.
00:27:31Shields down to 73%.
00:27:33What's the status of the warp engines?
00:27:36Still down. We can't outrun them.
00:27:38Helm, set a new course-- heading 344 mark 6.
00:27:42Full impulse. ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:27:44Sir, that heading takes us directly into the sun.
00:27:57The data banks should contain information on a process called metaphasic shielding.
00:28:00I know about that research.
00:28:02Commander La Forge was developing a program that would implement metaphasic properties.
00:28:05Right, how far along was he?
00:28:07Well, it's in the data banks but it's never been tested.
00:28:09If we had metaphasic shielding, we could enter the sun's corona but the Borg ship wouldn't be able to follow.
00:28:15Can you bring the program on line?
00:28:17I can, but we have no way of knowing if the shields will hold.
00:28:20Sir, hull temperature is rising-- now at 12,000 degrees C.
00:28:23Radiation level nearing 10,000 rads.
00:28:27Report.
00:28:28Shields at 62%.
00:28:32Lieutenant, activate the metaphasic program.
00:28:35It's our best shot.
00:28:37Aye, sir.
00:28:38Hull temperature is critical.
00:28:39We can't withstand this heat much longer.
00:28:41Program is on line.
00:28:43Engaging metaphasic shield now.
00:28:54Hull temperature dropping.
00:28:55Down to 7,000 degrees.
00:28:59Maintain course.
00:29:08Borg ship has broken off pursuit.
00:29:10All stop.
00:29:12Sir, the Borg ship is taking up position relative to ours.
00:29:15They're going to wait for us to come out.
00:29:19The question is, how long can we survive in here?
00:29:33Well...
00:29:35I've done everything that Geordi told me.
00:29:38Now to activate it.
00:29:40How are we going to know whether the pulse reboots Data's ethical program?
00:29:43We'll only tell that when we see his behavior.
00:29:45Won't he realize something's happened to him?
00:29:47No, that's one program among thousands.
00:29:51I just hope that this force-field has enough energy... to trigger the pulse.
00:30:03You know, Data
00:30:05I've been thinking about some of the times we've had.
00:30:09Like that time we went sailing on Devala lake.
00:30:11You remember that?
00:30:14I have a complete memory record of that day.
00:30:17( chuckling )
00:30:18You decided to go swimming and when you jumped out of the boat you sank straight to the bottom.
00:30:24I did not have enough buoyancy to get back to the surface.
00:30:28You had to walk over a kilometer along the bottom to get back to shore.
00:30:31One kilometer, 46 meters.
00:30:34It took almost two weeks to get the water out of your servos.
00:30:38I am ready to irradiate your existing brain cells.
00:30:44Data... if you ever go back to the way you were you might not be able to forgive yourself for what you're about to do.
00:30:56I am getting some anomalous readings from your neural net.
00:31:01I will need to do further testing before... I proceed.
00:31:05Someone will come and take you back to your cell.
00:31:20There you are, brother.
00:31:22Have you made any progress with La Forge?
00:31:25It is too early to tell if the nano-cortical fibers performed their function.
00:31:30I suspect none of the humans will survive the process but then... it's their own fault, isn't it?
00:31:36They never should have come here.
00:31:39What were they thinking?
00:31:42They came looking for me.
00:31:43Oh, humans are so sentimental.
00:31:46I betrayed them.
00:31:49If they die, I am responsible.
00:31:54Why are you talking like that?
00:31:57Is something wrong with your programming?
00:31:59Maybe I should check your systems.
00:32:02I do not want you to check my systems.
00:32:04I must resolve these issues myself.
00:32:06I think I made a mistake.
00:32:09I don't believe you can tolerate the amount of emotion I've given you.
00:32:13Perhaps I should cut back a little.
00:32:16( gasps )
00:32:17How's that?
00:32:20I do not like it.
00:32:21Then you prefer to have more emotions?
00:32:23Yes.
00:32:26They give you pleasure?
00:32:28Yes, please, I want more.
00:32:30All right.
00:32:32A little more... for now.
00:32:41Aren't you going to thank me?
00:32:44Thank you.
00:32:45Don't mention it.
00:32:46I just hope this helps to clarify things for you.
00:33:01I'm concerned about my brother, Crosis.
00:33:07I don't believe he really wants to be a part of our great future.
00:33:21Sir, metaphasic shielding is losing integrity.
00:33:24Can you stabilize it?
00:33:26No. We won't be able to stay in here longer than another three or four minutes.
00:33:29Do we have warp engines yet?
00:33:31Last estimate was another half hour.
00:33:33Sir, I think I have an idea.
00:33:36I think it's possible we could induce a solar fusion eruption that would destroy the Borg ship.
00:33:40What?
00:33:42We'd need to direct a highly energetic particle beam onto the sun's surface.
00:33:45That should produce a superfluid gas eruption.
00:33:48If we target the right spot the eruption would envelop the Borg ship.
00:33:52How do you know this will work?
00:33:53I did my senior honors thesis on solar dynamics.
00:33:56Excuse me, sir but this isn't the academy and a student thesis is a long way from a workable plan.
00:34:02I've already configured the tractor emitters to create the particle beam and I've located the target point on the surface.
00:34:08If her calculations are off that eruption could encompass us.
00:34:11Well, I'll just have to make sure my calculations are accurate, Lieutenant.
00:34:18Let's do it.
00:34:19Yes, sir.
00:34:28The target area of the photosphere is destabilizing.
00:34:30Pressure wave expansion is accelerating.
00:34:33Subsurface fusion has been initiated.
00:34:36An eruption is forming on the surface.
00:34:45She did it.
00:34:48The Borg ship has been destroyed, sir.
00:34:50CRUSHER: Helm, take us back to the planet full impulse.
00:34:53Aye, sir.
00:34:54Well done, Taitt.
00:35:11You're killing him.
00:35:13He won't survive another session.
00:35:16I did not come for him.
00:35:19I came for you.
00:35:32( groaning softly )
00:35:33Data, it's not too late.
00:35:36If you remove the fibers, then Geordi might yet recover.
00:35:39That would not be possible.
00:35:41Why? Because Lore tells you so?
00:35:46It is for the greater good.
00:35:48Good?
00:35:51Data, isn't good and bad, right and wrong a function of your ethical program?
00:35:59That is correct.
00:36:00And what does that program tell you about what you're doing to Geordi?
00:36:03About what you and Lore are doing to the Borg?
00:36:07It tells you that these things are wrong doesn't it, Data?
00:36:11So how can actions that are wrong lead to a greater good?
00:36:16You are attempting to confuse me.
00:36:18No, you're not confused, Data.
00:36:20You're sensing the truth.
00:36:23Your ethical program is fighting the negative emotions that Lore is sending you.
00:36:29Ah, Captain.
00:36:32Thank you so much for joining us.
00:36:36You are going to assist me... in a most important ceremony.
00:36:43We can use the environmental control ducts to get into the compound.
00:36:47They should lead us to the detention area.
00:36:49We'll have to move fast.
00:36:51If we need to stun one of the guards the Borg will know right away if he's been hurt.
00:36:54When they realize your escape route may be compromised.
00:36:59I guess we'll have to take that chance.
00:37:03Good luck, Commander.
00:37:14It's time to put aside all doubts, brother.
00:37:18It's time to close the door on the past and commit yourself to the great work that lies ahead of us.
00:37:24I need to know I can count on you.
00:37:29As proof, I want you to kill Picard.
00:37:50No... that would be wrong.
00:37:58I didn't think you'd be able to do it.
00:38:00You've spent too many years among humans.
00:38:03Hold him.
00:38:07I've asked many sacrifices of you-- sacrifices I knew were necessary in order to build a better future.
00:38:17I want you to know that I ask no more of you than I am prepared to give myself.
00:38:25I am willing to make the greatest sacrifice of all...
00:38:31... my own... dear brother.
00:38:40Good-bye, Data.
00:38:45No!
00:38:48( Borg yelling )
00:38:55( yelling continues )
00:39:00( grunting )
00:39:14( grunting and groaning )
00:39:21Lore.
00:39:29You should be careful with that, brother.
00:39:32Someone could get hurt.
00:39:34What are you doing?
00:39:37I've got a way out of here.
00:39:41I'm willing to forget what happened back there-- take you with me.
00:39:46We don't need anyone else.
00:39:49We're brothers.
00:39:54I'll give you the chip our father made.
00:39:57It contains much more than just emotions.
00:40:01It has memories.
00:40:03Memories... our father wanted you to have.
00:40:12( groans )
00:40:33Lore, I must deactivate you now.
00:40:38( speaking haltingly ): Without me you will never feel emotion again.
00:40:45I know... but you leave me no other choice.
00:40:51( beeping )
00:40:53( voice slowing ): I... love you... brother.
00:41:03Good-bye, Lore.
00:41:16What about Geordi and Troi?
00:41:17The Enterprise is in orbit.
00:41:19I had them beamed aboard.
00:41:22Lore is no longer functioning, sir.
00:41:24He must be disassembled so that he is no longer a threat.
00:41:27Welcome back, Data.
00:41:29Thank you, sir.
00:41:33What made you change your mind, Hugh?
00:41:35Perhaps my encounter with the Enterprise affected me more than I realized.
00:41:41What will you do now?
00:41:43( sighing )
00:41:45I don't know.
00:41:47We can't go back to the Borg collective and we no longer have a leader here.
00:41:54I'm not sure that's true.
00:41:58Perhaps in time, we will learn to function as individuals
00:42:03and work together as a group.
00:42:07Good luck, Hugh.
00:42:10Good-bye.
00:42:15Captain's Log, Stardate 47025.4.
00:42:19We have returned to Federation space
00:42:20and are en route to Starbase 295.
00:42:23Mr. La Forge remains under Dr. Crusher's care.
00:42:30( door chiming )
00:42:32Enter.
00:42:39Hi, Data.
00:42:42I wanted to let you know that Dr. Crusher says
00:42:44I'll be able to return to duty soon.
00:42:49I am... relieved that the injuries
00:42:52I inflicted on you are not permanent.
00:42:57What's that?
00:42:59This is the chip my father created for me so that I could experience emotion.
00:43:03I had it removed from Lore's body before he was dismantled.
00:43:07Does it work?
00:43:09No.
00:43:10I am pleased to say it was damaged when I was forced to fire on Lore.
00:43:15Pleased?
00:43:16Data, you've wanted emotions your whole life.
00:43:20Yes.
00:43:22But emotions are responsible for what I did to you.
00:43:25I would never risk letting that happen again.
00:43:28My friendship with you is too important to me.
00:43:36Data, I wouldn't be very much of a friend if I let you give up on a lifelong dream now would I?
00:43:44Maybe someday... when you're ready.
00:44:07♪♪
