Gambit: Part 1
00:00:01( conversation and laughter )
00:00:09So, tell me.
00:00:12Why is it so important that you find this man?
00:00:15We had business dealings.
00:00:17He owes me money.
00:00:19Ooh.
00:00:20Well, if we had business dealings
00:00:23I can tell you that I wouldn't disappear.
00:00:26Maybe we can discuss that possibility.
00:00:29Ooh. But first...
00:00:31I have to find him, collect the money I'm owed.
00:00:36I'll be closing in a few hours.
00:00:39Perhaps we could, uh... discuss this more privately.
00:00:46If I don't find him, I'm going to have to move on.
00:00:49Oh...
00:00:51Are you sure you haven't seen him?
00:00:53Human.
00:00:55About... two meters tall... smooth-headed.
00:01:00Hmm.
00:01:02No. I don't remember anyone like that.
00:01:08You're lying.
00:01:09And you're a Betazoid.
00:01:12I thought so.
00:01:14Listen.
00:01:15People that come in here... they count on a certain amount of anonymity.
00:01:21And if I were to start answering questions about them-- even to a very beautiful woman-- well, I wouldn't be in business very long.
00:01:35And being a businesswoman, I'm sure you understand.
00:01:39( chuckling )
00:01:44( sighs )
00:01:46Great story.
00:01:47I'll remember it next time I'm in a knife fight.
00:01:56Any luck?
00:01:58I think the one over there knows something.
00:02:03He would not admit to having seen the captain, but he said anyone who visited the ruins of Nafir would probably come here eventually.
00:02:12I suspect he knows more.
00:02:14Let's go.
00:02:16Commander, I told...
00:02:19My friend tells me you know something about the man we're looking for.
00:02:24The only reason I'm talking to you is that I have a sister, too.
00:02:30I explained to him that we are looking for a man who impregnated your sister.
00:02:38So, you can imagine how much this means to me.
00:02:40Family honor is important.
00:02:42If someone had defiled my sister
00:02:44I would do anything, pay anything to find the one responsible.
00:02:49And how much might "anything" be?
00:02:52As much as five bars of gold-pressed latinum.
00:02:57I think you've had a little too much to drink.
00:02:59You'd better leave.
00:03:01On your way, Yranac.
00:03:05I'm sorry... but I think he wants to stay.
00:03:08Sit down.
00:03:12RIKER: That's my sister.
00:03:13She's angry.
00:03:14She's got a vicious temper.
00:03:16I wouldn't cross her.
00:03:17You say one word and you're a dead man.
00:03:23Perhaps there's an element of risk here that I did not fully appreciate.
00:03:27Hmm. And how much more latinum will it take to offset this risk?
00:03:32This isn't about latinum.
00:03:35As a man with a sister-- a sister with a temper--
00:03:38I can sympathize with you.
00:03:39But... how did you come here?
00:03:43Do you have a ship in orbit?
00:03:44Yes.
00:03:45Then take me with you.
00:03:47You can drop me anywhere.
00:03:51Agreed. Now, talk.
00:03:54The man you're looking for was here several weeks ago.
00:03:58There was a group of aliens sitting at this table.
00:04:00He was asking them questions.
00:04:01Who were these "aliens"?
00:04:04I don't know, but they looked dangerous.
00:04:06They attacked him.
00:04:08He managed to incapacitate three of them before he was knocked down.
00:04:11He was thrown against that wall and fell there.
00:04:20I'm picking up Starfleet fiber traces and human cellular debris.
00:04:24Can you establish a DNA reading?
00:04:26There's something strange here.
00:04:28The cell structures are badly distorted.
00:04:30It's as if they've been exposed to some kind of high-energy field.
00:04:34A weapon discharge?
00:04:36It could be.
00:04:38I'm picking up some faint traces of micro-crystalline damage in the floor material.
00:04:42But I'm not familiar with the pattern I'm getting.
00:04:45Who are you people?
00:04:47You didn't say anything about a weapon.
00:04:49I hadn't finished yet.
00:04:51You'll like this.
00:04:53The man got what was coming to him.
00:04:55When they knocked him down one of them took out a weapon and fired.
00:05:01He was vaporized.
00:05:07He's telling the truth.
00:05:38Space, the final frontier.
00:05:42These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
00:05:47Its continuing mission--
00:05:48to explore strange new worlds
00:05:52to seek out new life and new civilizations
00:05:56to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:06:58RIKER: Acting Captain's Log, Stardate 47135.2.
00:07:02Dr. Crusher has positively identified
00:07:04Captain Picard's DNA.
00:07:06There is no doubt now that he is dead.
00:07:14( door chimes )
00:07:16Come.
00:07:22( sighing ): How are you doing?
00:07:24I'm all right.
00:07:28The crew is pretty shaken up.
00:07:31I'm arranging a memorial.
00:07:34I think you should be the one to deliver the eulogy.
00:07:40I think you'd be better at something like that.
00:07:43Or Beverly.
00:07:44She knew him the longest.
00:07:46I know it's not going to be easy, but I think it's important that we face up to what's happened.
00:07:52You're in command now.
00:07:55The crew's looking to you for guidance.
00:07:57You don't understand. I can't give the eulogy because I won't be at the service.
00:08:04Will, a memorial service helps to give everyone a sense of completion.
00:08:08It helps them begin the healing process.
00:08:10That's exactly the point. I don't want to heal.
00:08:13Will... I have an open wound.
00:08:15Right here. It hurts like hell.
00:08:18I don't want it to get better, and I don't want to pretend that everything's all right.
00:08:25I know you're angry.
00:08:26You're damn right!
00:08:30And I intend to stay angry until I find whoever's responsible for the captain's death.
00:08:36Will, that's pretty selfish of you.
00:08:41Do you think you're the only one in pain?
00:08:44Do you think you have the monopoly on loss?
00:08:47Well, let me tell you something.
00:08:50We're all hurting, and we're all angry.
00:08:53And whether you like it or not you have a responsibility to this crew!
00:08:57And you can't just indulge your personal desire for revenge!
00:09:01That is enough, Counselor.
00:09:07Deanna?
00:09:12I'm sorry.
00:09:18This is not about revenge.
00:09:20This is about justice.
00:09:22The captain died in a bar fight for nothing.
00:09:25Somebody has to answer for that.
00:09:29Then I can mourn.
00:09:34( door opens, closes )
00:09:38( console beeping )
00:09:44Commander, I am receiving a transmission from Admiral Chekote at Starbase 227.
00:09:49I'll take it in the Ready Room.
00:09:51Aye, sir.
00:10:06Sir.
00:10:07I read your report, Commander.
00:10:11My condolences to you and to your crew.
00:10:14Captain Picard's death is a loss to the entire Federation.
00:10:20Now, I see that you've asked to postpone your mission to the Argus sector.
00:10:24For what reason?
00:10:25I have a request, sir.
00:10:27I would like to conduct an investigation into Captain Picard's death.
00:10:31The Dessican authorities have jurisdiction in this case, Commander.
00:10:34I know that, sir.
00:10:36Frankly, I don't have much confidence in the authorities on Dessica II.
00:10:40There's every reason to believe that they're corrupt.
00:10:42Well, I suspect you're right, but the question remains are you the one to pursue this?
00:10:50The captain's death hit me pretty hard and I may not be completely objective, but there's no one who is more determined.
00:11:00I won't rest until I find out who's responsible.
00:11:04All right, Commander.
00:11:06I'm officially placing the Enterprise on detached duty.
00:11:10Your mission is at your discretion.
00:11:13Good luck.
00:11:15Thank you, sir.
00:11:24Mmm... mmm.
00:11:27Ah! Commander Riker.
00:11:30I've been meaning to speak to you.
00:11:32I was wondering if you could move me to better quarters.
00:11:34I-I don't care much for the decor here.
00:11:39These are the best quarters we have.
00:11:40Hmm.
00:11:43I was hoping now that you've had a chance to relax you might have remembered some of the details about the aliens you saw-- something you may have forgotten before.
00:11:50Sorry. My memory isn't what it used to be.
00:12:01They murdered a man in cold blood in full sight of everyone in the bar and you can't remember anything about them?
00:12:07Now that you mention it, I do remember one thing.
00:12:11They said they'd kill anyone who talked about what happened.
00:12:13Do you know where they went?
00:12:23So, you know who they are and you know where I can find them.
00:12:28Perhaps I do.
00:12:33What do you want?
00:12:35Not a great deal, Commander.
00:12:38Just a shuttlecraft.
00:12:39I believe I'd like to travel for a while see more of the galaxy.
00:12:42You understand.
00:12:44A shuttlecraft.
00:12:46Well, here's my offer.
00:12:48Instead of the ship, I'll give you some time.
00:12:52Time?
00:12:54If you're lucky, you'll only spend the next five years in prison, instead of the next 20.
00:13:02You've got 12 outstanding arrest warrants for fraud and petty theft in the Klingon Empire.
00:13:07You tell me what you know, I'll pull some strings.
00:13:11Maybe they'll reduce your sentence after you've been extradited.
00:13:13If I tell you what I know, you must promise not to give me to the Klingons.
00:13:17I'll think about it.
00:13:19Perhaps you could... send me to a Federation rehabilitation colony instead.
00:13:26Talk.
00:13:30The aliens were some kind of mercenary group.
00:13:32They've been operating in this sector for the last six months.
00:13:35Where do we find them?
00:13:37I heard one of them mention the Barradas system.
00:13:40I think they were headed there.
00:13:42You think?!
00:13:45That's all I know.
00:13:48Riker to Data.
00:13:49DATA: Data here.
00:13:51Take us out of orbit.
00:13:52Set course for the Barradas system.
00:13:56Warp six.
00:13:57DATA: Aye, sir.
00:14:10Barradas III is the only Class-M planet in this system and it is listed as unpopulated.
00:14:16However, sensors have detected intermittent energy signals emanating from its surface.
00:14:20What's the source?
00:14:21Well, the signals are difficult to localize, but they could be emissions from some kind of power converter.
00:14:26Which would indicate a base or a ship.
00:14:29What else do we know about Barradas III?
00:14:31The planet was used as an outpost for the Debrune approximately 2,000 years ago.
00:14:36The Federation's archaeological survey has catalogued numerous ruins on the surface.
00:14:42Mr. Worf, I'd like a security detail to accompany the away team to the surface.
00:14:46I'll lead the away team. Geordi, you're with me.
00:14:48Mr. Data, you have the bridge.
00:14:50Aye, sir. Commander?
00:14:53As acting first officer
00:14:55I must question your decision to accompany the away team.
00:14:58If Captain Picard were here...
00:14:59He's not.
00:15:00I realize that, sir, but if he were and he wanted to lead an away team you would tell him that the captain's place...
00:15:07Is on the Bridge.
00:15:08Not this time.
00:15:19Ensign, you take that area.
00:15:20Yes, sir.
00:15:21( birds chirping )
00:15:25MAN: Here you are, sir.
00:15:27Geordi?
00:15:30It's tough to get accurate sensor readings.
00:15:32There's an awful lot of interference in the area.
00:15:34From what?
00:15:35I'm not sure.
00:15:36It's very unlocalized, but it could be atmospheric.
00:15:40What do you make of these?
00:15:49Well, these ruins around here are pretty ancient, but I'd say that this indentation was made fairly recently.
00:15:56It could be the site of some battlefield.
00:15:58This doesn't look like any blast point
00:15:59I've ever seen.
00:16:01The shape is too perfect.
00:16:02Commander, there's micro-crystalline damage all throughout this area.
00:16:07It's the same kind of pattern that Dr. Crusher picked up on the floor of that bar on Dessica II.
00:16:12WORF: Commander!
00:16:19I've found something.
00:16:21( tricorder beeping ) it looks as if someone could have just dropped it.
00:16:39La Forge to Enterprise.
00:16:40We are under attack down here.
00:16:42I repeat, we are under attack.
00:16:44Commander, we've lost contact with the away team.
00:16:47Is there a malfunction?
00:16:48No, sir.
00:16:49The com system is being jammed.
00:16:51DATA: What is the source?
00:16:52Somewhere on the surface.
00:16:54Bridge to Transporter Room Two.
00:16:56Can you get a lock on the away team?
00:16:58MAN: Negative, sir.
00:16:59There's too much interference.
00:17:25I'm going to head for those trees over there.
00:17:27If I can get there, we might be able to set up a cross fire.
00:18:08Data to away team. Please respond.
00:18:11Data, we've been attacked.
00:18:13We've got one casualty and commander Riker has been taken captive.
00:18:17Sir, the mercenaries have beamed away.
00:18:21They must have a base or a ship nearby.
00:18:24Can the sensors locate anything?
00:18:25Commander, we're picking up a vessel leaving orbit.
00:18:29Why was it not detected earlier?
00:18:30They could have been using the planet as a shield.
00:18:33( console beeping )
00:18:34Sir, they're powering up their weapon systems.
00:18:36Raise shields.
00:18:38Red alert.
00:18:39( alarm wailing )
00:18:48Damage report.
00:18:49Minor hit on the port deflector. No damage.
00:18:53They're running, sir.
00:18:54Their speed is warp 8.7 and holding.
00:18:56I think they're at their maximum.
00:18:58Take us to warp nine and pursue.
00:19:00Lock phasers on target.
00:19:02Sir, we should be within phaser range in 23 seconds.
00:19:07Switching to long-range scanners.
00:19:10Commander, the sensor image of that ship is extremely weak.
00:19:13It's fading.
00:19:16The ship doesn't register on the long-range sensors.
00:19:20I'm sorry, sir.
00:19:21We've lost them.
00:19:23Increase the sensor field bandwidth.
00:19:25Patch in the lateral sensor arrays.
00:19:30It's no good. The signal's gone.
00:19:32It just... disappeared.
00:19:37Plot a course and take us back to Barradas III.
00:19:40Notify the away team to prepare for transport.
00:19:42Aye, sir.
00:19:49Starfleet intelligence confirms that a ship matching this configuration has been linked to raids on several other planets in this sector.
00:19:56For the short time it was within our visual range we were able to take sensor readings of the mercenary vessel.
00:20:02It appears to be encased in an energy-absorbing material.
00:20:06Although we can see the ship this energy sheath renders it virtually undetectable to our long-range sensors.
00:20:13There must be some way we can track it.
00:20:15LA FORGE: Data?
00:20:17I know this is a long shot, but if I remodulate the long-range sensor array
00:20:21I might be able to make it sensitive enough to detect the ship.
00:20:25Without a full compositional analysis of the energy sheath, our chances of finding the correct remodulation sequence are remote.
00:20:32Sir, they have taken Commander Riker.
00:20:35We must do something. We cannot just sit here.
00:20:38On the contrary, Lieutenant, that is precisely what we must do.
00:20:51Since there are no viable alternatives we will return to the surface and attempt to determine what these mercenaries are doing on this planet.
00:20:58An investigation might reveal some indication of their purpose.
00:21:02Please notify me when you have assembled your search teams.
00:21:05Dismissed.
00:21:25MALE 1: What's the problem?
00:21:27MALE 2: I warned you not to push the engines so hard.
00:21:28Two of the power shunts are on the verge of collapse.
00:21:31We'll be lucky if we can maintain warp six.
00:21:33How long will it take to repair?
00:21:35I can try to realign the warp core.
00:21:38It'll take at least 11 hours.
00:21:40But I'll have to shut the engines down completely.
00:21:42We're not stopping.
00:21:44We can't afford to be sitting helpless in space.
00:21:46I want warp eight available in five hours, and I don't want to hear your excuses.
00:21:58What were you doing on Barradas III?
00:22:01William T. Riker Commander, SC 231-427.
00:22:07Oh, really?
00:22:10Well, I am Arctus Baran, and I don't have a number.
00:22:15Now, what were you doing on Barradas III, Commander?
00:22:20We were studying the ruins.
00:22:22It was a scientific expedition.
00:22:25Don't patronize me.
00:22:27Those ruins have been studied for centuries.
00:22:30There's nothing new to learn from them.
00:22:33Then what were you doing there?
00:22:36( gasping and moaning )
00:22:38Oh, don't bother, Commander.
00:22:40You can't remove it.
00:22:42It's a neural servo connected directly to your nervous system.
00:22:45It lets me control precisely how much pain you feel.
00:22:49This setting is usually sufficient.
00:22:50However, if necessary, it can go much higher.
00:22:54( yells )
00:22:56These devices were the idea of my predecessor.
00:23:00It's a convenient way of enforcing discipline.
00:23:02What happened to him?
00:23:05He failed to enforce it with me.
00:23:07This is a waste of time, Baran.
00:23:10Get rid of him now.
00:23:11You should be more patient, Vekor.
00:23:15It might be rewarding.
00:23:17We will wait.
00:23:20Let the memory of his pain argue with him for a while.
00:23:23It might change his attitude.
00:23:27Vekor is right. We should get rid of him.
00:23:29It's dangerous having someone from Starfleet on board.
00:23:32Dangerous? It might be profitable.
00:23:35A Starfleet commander is a valuable hostage.
00:23:39Starfleet won't negotiate with us, but they'll pursue us as long as we have him.
00:23:44( groans )
00:23:47This discussion is over.
00:23:48Get back to your post, Vekor.
00:23:54PICARD: They're right, Baran.
00:23:57And you know it.
00:23:59I say kill him.
00:24:03Now.
00:24:14PICARD: If he has nothing to give us, we should kill him now and be done with it.
00:24:18Everybody seems to recognize that fact, except you.
00:24:21I don't need a consensus to run this ship, Galen.
00:24:24( engine powering down )
00:24:26( beeping )
00:24:28What's going on?
00:24:30I'm bypassing the aft plasma couplings.
00:24:33The power loss should only last for a few seconds.
00:24:41You should learn not to limit your options.
00:24:44Riker could be very useful to us in the future.
00:24:47He may not be as useful as you think if this is the same Riker that I've heard about.
00:24:53What Riker might that be?
00:24:55Commander of the Enterprise formerly assigned to the USS Hood.
00:25:00That's right.
00:25:01Then you must be the William T. Riker with a history of insubordination.
00:25:06He was even once relieved of duty during the Cardassian incident at Minos Korva.
00:25:10How do you know all this?
00:25:12Look, I've been smuggling artifacts from Federation sites for years.
00:25:17You can't help developing a familiarity with certain Starfleet personnel.
00:25:23If we hadn't have captured him, he'd probably have ended up before a court-martial.
00:25:28I've gotten out of them before.
00:25:33Look, he's no use to us.
00:25:34Finish him now or let me do it for you.
00:25:39( alarm blaring )
00:25:43Watch him.
00:25:47We're accelerating.
00:25:49What have you done?
00:25:50It has nothing to do with my repairs.
00:25:53I think there's a malfunction in the engine's intermix chamber.
00:25:56Plasma pressure is rising.
00:25:59Where's the malfunction?
00:26:00It could be one of any 30 subsystems.
00:26:03It'll take time to locate.
00:26:05I don't think you're going to have the chance.
00:26:07Plasma pressure has reached critical levels.
00:26:08Seal off the intermix chamber.
00:26:10I can't-- the override sequence won't engage.
00:26:13The antimatter-flow regulator is locked open.
00:26:16VEKOR: Logic subsystem still not responding.
00:26:19Get out of the way.
00:26:20ROMULAN: Plasma pressure has exceeded maximum levels.
00:26:22Eight percent above critical and rising.
00:26:24We have to jettison the core.
00:26:26No. We'll be stranded here.
00:26:28The flow regulator is frozen.
00:26:32Let me do it.
00:26:34I've had a lot of experience with this sort of systems failure.
00:26:37I might be able to do something.
00:26:39Plasma pressure is 11% above critical.
00:26:41The containment fields are beginning to degrade.
00:26:43Go!
00:26:44MERCENARY: Flow regulator is not responding to manual override.
00:26:47Containment fields won't hold much longer.
00:26:51Looks like you've got a control logic lockout on your regulator's subsystem.
00:26:57I'm going to attempt to run an active bypass through the plasma-flow converter.
00:27:01You! Start running phase-locked feedback through that regulator.
00:27:03I want about a six-second delay.
00:27:05What are you saying?
00:27:07I don't take orders from you.
00:27:09You do as he says.
00:27:10Plasma pressure is 14% above critical.
00:27:12If you fail...
00:27:14We'll all be dead, anyway.
00:27:17I just need a few more seconds.
00:27:24Plasma pressure is dropping.
00:27:29We're back into safe levels.
00:27:34You want to make sure that doesn't happen again you'd better reinitiate your regulator subcompressors.
00:27:39A full diagnostic of your intermix chamber wouldn't hurt, either.
00:27:42Do it.
00:27:47Put him in quarters for now.
00:27:53You still wish you'd killed me?
00:28:01( birds chirping )
00:28:07The search teams have reported in.
00:28:10They found several archaeological sites.
00:28:12Each one has been looted.
00:28:13LA FORGE: It's possible that the micro-crystalline damage I found in these indentations is the result of some kind of high-energy transporter beam.
00:28:21But I still don't understand.
00:28:23There's nothing here that's particularly valuable.
00:28:26Why would anyone want to steal any of these things?
00:28:29Perhaps these artifacts have a special value to the Romulans.
00:28:32The Romulans?
00:28:35These structures were built by the Debrune.
00:28:38That race is an ancient offshoot of the Romulans.
00:28:42The ruins on the planet where Captain Picard was killed were also Romulan in origin.
00:28:46The leader of the group that attacked us was Romulan.
00:28:48Perhaps they are controlling the mercenaries.
00:28:50The question remains-- why are they stealing these artifacts?
00:29:01There are several archaeological sites in this sector containing ruins which are Romulan in origin.
00:29:07These are the locations that were attacked by the mercenary vessel.
00:29:10Looks like they did a pretty thorough job.
00:29:13The only sites not attacked were on Calder II
00:29:16Yadalla Prime and Draken IV.
00:29:18Yadalla and Draken are at the far edge of the sector but Calder II-- that's less than a day from here at maximum warp.
00:29:25That would be their next likely target.
00:29:28According to this there's a Federation outpost at Calder II.
00:29:31But it is only a small science station.
00:29:34It has limited defensive capabilities.
00:29:37I do not believe it could withstand an attack from the mercenary ship.
00:29:41Mr. Worf, send a message to the Federation outpost on Calder II.
00:29:45Advise them that if a ship matching the configuration of the mercenary vessel approaches they should attempt to delay it until our arrival.
00:29:52Ensign, take us out of orbit.
00:29:55Set a course for the Calder System.
00:29:59Warp nine.
00:30:00ENSIGN: Aye, sir.
00:30:12( door opening )
00:30:14We don't have much time.
00:30:20It's good to see you, Will.
00:30:22I didn't expect to meet you here.
00:30:25I was looking for the people who killed you on the surface.
00:30:28A witness said they saw you vaporized.
00:30:30These mercenaries use weapons that can activate their transporter.
00:30:35It gives them the opportunity to beam things away quickly just by firing at them.
00:30:40That's what they did to me.
00:30:42I don't understand any of this.
00:30:43Who are these people?
00:30:45What are you doing involved with them?
00:30:46The site that I wanted to study had been raided.
00:30:50One of the artifacts had been stolen.
00:30:52The site had been practically destroyed.
00:30:55Well, I wanted to find out who was responsible.
00:30:57I tracked them to that bar on Dessica II.
00:31:01Well, I must have asked too many questions.
00:31:04They captured me.
00:31:05They wanted to find out how much I knew about their operation.
00:31:09And then you became part of their crew?
00:31:11I convinced them I was a smuggler and that my name was Galen.
00:31:16I offered to help them appraise the artifacts that they'd stolen.
00:31:20Will, these are not common thieves.
00:31:23They are stealing Romulan artifacts from archaeological sites throughout this sector.
00:31:29Baran has me analyzing each one of them for a particular particle signature.
00:31:34Will, they are looking for a specific artifact.
00:31:37Why?
00:31:39That's what we have to find out.
00:31:41Baran is the key.
00:31:43I think that he knows more about what we're really looking for than anyone else on this ship.
00:31:47I want you to get close to him.
00:31:48Try and get his confidence.
00:31:51That's why you set up the engine failure-- because you knew that I'd be able to fix it.
00:31:54He also believes that you're a less-than-perfect Starfleet officer.
00:31:59Will, I want you to play into that role.
00:32:01Baran and I...
00:32:05Well, he doesn't care very much for me.
00:32:08But he has to tolerate me because he needs my help with these artifacts.
00:32:15But if you and I become enemies, then there's a better chance of you and he becoming friends.
00:32:20All right.
00:32:22I'll do what I can.
00:32:23( door opening )
00:32:25( groans )
00:32:31What are you doing here?
00:32:33Getting some answers.
00:32:36Because you can't get him to talk.
00:32:39( groans )
00:32:41No one conducts an interrogation on this ship without my permission.
00:32:48Is that understood?
00:33:01( groans )
00:33:19Our next objective should prove an interesting challenge.
00:33:24We're headed for the Sakethan burial mounds on Calder II.
00:33:27PICARD: What?
00:33:29Calder II isn't just another archaeological site, you know.
00:33:33It's a Federation outpost.
00:33:34I don't see that as a problem.
00:33:36PICARD: It's defended by Starfleet.
00:33:38You don't think they're just going to stand by while we walk in there and take whatever we want?
00:33:43I am familiar with the tactical situation.
00:33:46What are their defenses?
00:33:48Nothing to worry about.
00:33:49They have a type-4 deflector shield protecting the outpost and the ruins.
00:33:53They also have a minimum of two phaser banks and possibly photon torpedoes.
00:33:58Is that enough to worry about?
00:34:00How do you know so much about this outpost?
00:34:03Because I tried to smuggle a Sakethan glyph stone out of there nearly two years ago.
00:34:09I barely got away in one piece.
00:34:10Our weapons are more than a match for their defenses.
00:34:13I anticipate that we'll be able to destroy the outpost within 15 minutes.
00:34:18Then we'll send in Tallera and the landing party to secure the relics.
00:34:22Why don't we use Riker?
00:34:24A Starfleet commander could talk us past the outpost security without raising their suspicions.
00:34:30Then, when their shields go down we could beam the artifacts up here without ever leaving the ship.
00:34:36Why would Riker help us?
00:34:37Just because he's out of favor with Starfleet doesn't mean that he's ready to betray them.
00:34:41If he doesn't help us we'll have to destroy the outpost and kill everyone on it.
00:34:47He's still a Starfleet officer.
00:34:49He won't want to take innocent lives if he can possibly prevent it.
00:34:56The last time we engaged Starfleet we lost a man.
00:35:00We can't afford any more casualties.
00:35:02If we can avoid a battle, I think we should.
00:35:09All right, we'll try it.
00:35:12We'll be at Calder II within five hours.
00:35:15You all know your duties.
00:35:17I want this ship prepared for battle... in case your plan doesn't work.
00:35:42Computer, reset diagnostic for a new sample.
00:35:45Lot number... 478-B.
00:35:52Access spectral analysis and begin scan, mode three.
00:35:58COMPUTER: Scan complete.
00:36:00Terikon particle decay profile does not fall within specified reference range.
00:36:06Probability of match: 0.04%
00:36:13Computer, reset diagnostic for a new sample.
00:36:18Lot number 369-B.
00:36:25Access spectral analysis, mode two, begin scan.
00:36:30Baran wants to see the analysis of the last lot.
00:36:33He thinks you're moving a little slowly.
00:36:35You can tell Baran, if he wants the analysis done faster, he can do it himself.
00:36:39If he wants it done correctly, he can wait.
00:36:44Do you enjoy living dangerously, Galen?
00:36:47Baran can kill you in an instant if he activates his control device.
00:36:52I doubt that he'll do that.
00:36:54I've increased the accuracy of the identification process by a factor of ten.
00:37:00I'm the best person to analyze these artifacts.
00:37:02Baran knows that.
00:37:07He may need you now, but I know Baran.
00:37:12And I can tell you he's not going to back down forever.
00:37:16You accomplish nothing by provoking him.
00:37:20I don't like operating in the dark.
00:37:23If I knew what the point of this mission were, why I was analyzing these relics...
00:37:28If Baran felt it were wise to let the crew know that
00:37:31I'm sure he would have.
00:37:37Do you know what all this is about?
00:37:38What Baran knows, I know.
00:37:42Then what's going on here?
00:37:44Why are we risking our lives taking these artifacts?
00:37:48Who wants them?
00:37:49I see no reason to tell you anything.
00:37:52But you can rest assured.
00:37:55I don't necessarily share everything I know with Baran either.
00:38:00This conversation, for example will stay between us.
00:38:06You can tell Baran every word that I've said.
00:38:08He knows that I don't think much of him as a leader.
00:38:12He's been in charge of this crew for a long time.
00:38:15Baran wouldn't last five minutes as captain if he didn't have that control device.
00:38:20The crew follow him because they have no choice.
00:38:23Baran's power is based on fear and intimidation.
00:38:27That almost sounds like a prelude to mutiny.
00:38:30If someone were to challenge him, the rest of the crew would follow.
00:38:35I was right.
00:38:37You do like living dangerously.
00:38:45I like you, Galen.
00:38:48I can tolerate a lot from someone like you but only to a point.
00:38:55I intend to complete this mission successfully and get what's been promised me.
00:38:59If it looks as though you're getting in the way of that
00:39:03I'll deal with you myself.
00:39:18Commander, no one is allowed on the surface without prior authorization from the Federation Science Council.
00:39:23I'm aware of that, Lieutenant, but your outpost is in imminent danger of attack.
00:39:29I would like to station security personnel on the surface for your protection.
00:39:33Now, I'm ordering you to drop your shields.
00:39:37I'm sorry, sir, but the regulations are very specific.
00:39:40I can't do it.
00:39:42If you'd like, you can remain in orbit until we contact the Science Council.
00:39:45But we're experiencing some communication difficulties right now, so that...
00:39:49This isn't working.
00:39:53They're delaying on purpose.
00:39:55Someone has warned them.
00:39:56Charge main disrupter array.
00:39:59Destroy the outpost.
00:40:00No! There's no time for that!
00:40:02Starfleet will be here any minute.
00:40:04What are you doing?
00:40:06I'm configuring the disrupters to fire a phase-resonant pulse.
00:40:09If I can hit their shield generator with precisely the right frequency
00:40:13I should be able to take it out with one shot.
00:40:15Firing.
00:40:19Their shields are down.
00:40:23The artifacts should be located in several small structures arranged in staggered formations.
00:40:27I'm scanning.
00:40:30I think I've found them.
00:40:32Lock coordinates and start bringing them up.
00:40:41There should be at least two more down there.
00:40:46I've lost transporter lock.
00:40:48They managed to get their shields back up.
00:40:50I need those artifacts.
00:40:53Lock all disrupters on target.
00:40:55This time, I want that outpost destroyed.
00:41:06Direct hit on their aft deflectors.
00:41:08They are undamaged.
00:41:09Ensign, scan for Starfleet combat signals.
00:41:13Is Commander Riker aboard that ship?
00:41:15I can't tell, sir.
00:41:16Sensors are unable to penetrate their hull.
00:41:19Open a channel.
00:41:20WORF: Open.
00:41:21This is the federation starship Enterprise.
00:41:24You are ordered to stand down.
00:41:26Drop your shields, and prepare to be boarded.
00:41:28You sent them a message.
00:41:30You told them where to find us.
00:41:32That's ridiculous. When did I have a chance?
00:41:34This is set to kill.
00:41:36Order your ship to disengage.
00:41:40Activate visual.
00:41:49Commander... are you all right?
00:41:52Tell them.
00:41:58Mr. Data, withdraw the Enterprise.
00:42:00That's an order.
00:42:02That is impossible, sir.
00:42:05The ship you are on has violated a Federation outpost.
00:42:08It is my duty to stop it.
00:42:10I'm your commanding officer. I'm giving you a direct order.
00:42:13Understood?
00:42:17Commander, if you could explain...
00:42:20I've never explained my orders before.
00:42:22I'm not about to start now.
00:42:28I'm not about to let him blow this ship into space.
00:42:30If I can set up a low-level com link between the two ships
00:42:33I can use my personal command codes.
00:42:34I can deactivate the shields.
00:42:36Do it.
00:42:44( console beeping )
00:42:46Sir, we are receiving some kind of signal from the mercenary ship.
00:42:52These are Commander Riker's access codes.
00:42:54He is attempting to shut down our shields.
00:42:56That doesn't make sense.
00:42:58He knows those codes would have been changed as soon as he was captured.
00:43:02That is correct, Counselor.
00:43:04He does know.
00:43:06Mr. Worf... prepare to drop shields.
00:43:12Sir, we would be totally defenseless.
00:43:16I am aware of that.
00:43:18Sir, as soon as they see us...
00:43:20Mr. Worf, that is an order.
00:43:25Aye, sir.
00:43:31It worked.
00:43:32The shields are dropping.
00:43:35Fire.
