00:00:02Captain's Log, Stardate 47423.9:
00:00:05We have arrived at Boraal II
00:00:07in response to an emergency distress call
00:00:09from Lieutenant Worf's foster brother, Nikolai Rozhenko.
00:00:12He has been stationed on the planet as a cultural observer.
00:00:16Analysis, Mr. Data.
00:00:18The planet's atmosphere is dissipating, sir.
00:00:21Intense plasmonic reactions are destroying it.
00:00:24The stratosphere is already breaking down.
00:00:26There are turbulent radiation storms across much of its surface.
00:00:30I estimate that the planet will be uninhabitable in less than 38 hours.
00:00:34The distress call came in only four days ago.
00:00:37Why would Dr. Rozhenko have waited so long before sending it?
00:00:41Atmospheric dissipation is a rare and essentially unpredictable event.
00:00:45When it occurs, it proceeds rapidly.
00:00:47Dr. Rozhenko may not have had sufficient warning.
00:00:50What was that?
00:00:53The dissipation effect is generating plasmonic energy bursts.
00:00:56Is there any danger to the ship?
00:00:58I do not believe so.
00:01:00However, we may experience intermittent system failures and power surges as a result.
00:01:05Keep an eye on it.
00:01:07Mr. Worf, any luck?
00:01:09There is still no response to our hails, sir.
00:01:12I'm attempting to scan the observation post.
00:01:15He could be hurt. Maybe he can't respond.
00:01:17WORF: Sensor interference is significant, but the post appears to be intact.
00:01:22Their power grid is still functioning.
00:01:25However, I am reading no life-forms within the structure.
00:01:29It's not like him to leave the post.
00:01:32Especially under these circumstances.
00:01:34Captain, I'm detecting faint power emissions from a system of caverns near the post.
00:01:39It could be a deflector shield.
00:01:41They can't be native to the planet.
00:01:43The Boraalans don't have anything close to that level of technology.
00:01:47Captain, request permission to lead an away team.
00:01:51Very well.
00:01:53But regardless of this planet's immediate situation, we must observe the Prime Directive.
00:01:58I want to minimize the risk of contact with the inhabitants.
00:02:02You will go down alone, Mr. Worf, and I want to have you surgically altered so that you could pass as a Boraalan.
00:02:08Aye, sir.
00:02:17You're worried about Nikolai, aren't you?
00:02:21Yes.
00:02:23Are the two of you close?
00:02:27We are brothers.
00:02:28You never talk much about him. What's he like?
00:02:32Nikolai is older than I and we are not alike.
00:02:38We had many disagreements when we were growing up.
00:02:42That's not unusual.
00:02:44Nikolai has a mind of his own.
00:02:47He attended Starfleet Academy, but he was unable to follow the rules.
00:02:54He left after one year.
00:02:59But he has many fine qualities.
00:03:01He's brilliant, persuasive... a natural leader.
00:03:07Sounds intriguing. I look forward to meeting him.
00:03:33MAN: What are you doing here?
00:03:38You're not from our village.
00:03:40Who are you?
00:03:43Who is this?
00:03:47My name is Worf.
00:03:49I am a traveler.
00:03:51How did you survive the storms?
00:03:53MAN: I would know that voice anywhere.
00:03:56Worf, is it really you?
00:04:01It's good to see you.
00:04:03You've changed a lot in four years.
00:04:07Nikolai?
00:04:08Yes. ( laughing )
00:04:11Oh, Worf.
00:04:13This is my brother, Worf. He's come to help us.
00:04:48Space... the final frontier.
00:04:52These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:04:56Its continuing mission--
00:04:58to explore strange new worlds...
00:05:02to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:05:06to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:06:08But if you were able to get here, the storms must have subsided. Please...
00:06:12Do you think it's safe enough to return to the surface?
00:06:15Please, I must speak to my brother.
00:06:21Nikolai, what have you done?
00:06:25They were dying.
00:06:26I refused to sit there safe in that observation post and watch it happen.
00:06:30I set up a deflector shield to screen these caves from the radiation and then I brought them here.
00:06:35What did you tell them?
00:06:37They think I'm a Boraalan.
00:06:38I told them I was from another village far from here.
00:06:40Well, at least you had that much sense.
00:06:43When I sent the distress call,
00:06:44I knew the Enterprise was in this sector, but I wasn't sure you'd be the one to come.
00:06:47I'm so glad that you're here, Worf.
00:06:49Nikolai, there is nothing we can do for these people.
00:06:55You have only postponed their deaths.
00:06:58I want to discuss that with your captain.
00:07:00And I am certain he will want to speak with you.
00:07:04Friends, my brother and I must go back to the surface.
00:07:07He has provisions and will need help bringing them here.
00:07:10We will return shortly.
00:07:12It's too dangerous.
00:07:13The storms can occur without warning.
00:07:15If you're caught in one... Don't worry. Worf is a seer.
00:07:16He understands the nature of the storms.
00:07:18He'll know when it's safe to travel.
00:07:22Yes. That is correct.
00:07:24Our seer died when the storms first came.
00:07:27We've been without his guidance for many weeks.
00:07:31Let me go with you.
00:07:33I know the terrain better than anyone and I can help.
00:07:36No, Vorin. Worf and I will be safe.
00:07:38We'll return shortly.
00:07:47Doctor, you were fully aware that the atmospheric dissipation could not be stopped.
00:07:52What did you hope to accomplish by assisting these people?
00:07:56I was trying to give them a future.
00:07:58What I propose is we create an atmospheric shield on the planet.
00:08:02We can camouflage the equipment just as was done with my observation post.
00:08:06No one will ever know it's there.
00:08:07You can't be serious.
00:08:08Indeed, I am.
00:08:10I realize it will only provide atmosphere for a limited area on the surface, but it will be enough to save one village.
00:08:16I have no intention of compounding what you have done by committing another gross violation of the Prime Directive.
00:08:22Captain, the Boraalans have a rich and beautiful culture, a deep spiritual life.
00:08:28They deserve the chance to survive, and isn't that what the Prime Directive was truly intended to do-- to allow cultures to survive and grow naturally?
00:08:37Not exactly.
00:08:38The Prime Directive was designed to insure noninterference.
00:08:42But aren't we interfering either way?
00:08:45If we take no action, it's a conscious decision to let the Boraalans die.
00:08:49Exactly.
00:08:50We have the power to save some of them.
00:08:52All we have to do is exercise it.
00:08:54We are sworn to uphold the principle of the Prime Directive.
00:08:58And until that is changed, there is no further course of action that we can take.
00:09:01Is that understood?
00:09:06Some of my... log recorders are still in my observation post.
00:09:12They contain most of my research.
00:09:13Since it appears that the only way,
00:09:16I'm going to preserve the Boraalan culture is in a museum...
00:09:21I request permission to return to the surface and retrieve them.
00:09:25I'm afraid that won't be possible.
00:09:28But you can have full use of the ship's computer to set up a com link and upload your data from here.
00:09:34If there's nothing further, you're dismissed.
00:09:47I am sorry, Nikolai.
00:09:50I wish there were another way.
00:10:00I am quite familiar with your communications systems.
00:10:03If you like, I will help you set up your com link.
00:10:10I'll do it myself.
00:10:15Captain, atmospheric dissipation has accelerated over the past several hours.
00:10:20I estimate the planet's atmosphere will be completely gone within three minutes.
00:10:25Captain, I've completed my data uplink.
00:10:29With your permission, I would like to integrate my research logs with the ship's library computer.
00:10:34Of course.
00:10:35DATA: The mesosphere is gone, sir.
00:10:38Plasmonic reactions are now beginning to break down the troposphere.
00:10:42Put it on screen.
00:10:52What's going on?
00:10:53It appears the plasmonic reactions are continuing to interfere with our sensors.
00:10:57I thought you had compensated for that.
00:10:59I had, sir.
00:11:01I will attempt to engage additional filtering elements.
00:11:06Visual reestablished.
00:11:12This is one of those times... when we must face the ramifications of the Prime Directive and honor those lives which we cannot save.
00:11:26I find no honor in this whatsoever, Captain.
00:11:32You will forgive me if I don't stay.
00:11:56You have the Bridge, Number One.
00:11:59Helm, take us out of orbit.
00:12:02Set a course for Starbase 87, warp five.
00:12:05HELM: Aye, sir.
00:12:10What happened?
00:12:11There appears to be an unusual power drain in the EPS distribution net.
00:12:15RIKER: What's the source? Unknown, sir.
00:12:18It is difficult to localize.
00:12:20The power drain is registered on my security grid as well, sir.
00:12:22It appears to be coming from Deck ten.
00:12:25All right, Mr. Worf, get a security team on it.
00:12:28Aye, sir.
00:12:31Concentrate your scans on the EPS transfer links.
00:12:48Computer, open Holodeck five.
00:12:52COMPUTER: Unable to comply.
00:12:54Holodeck five is in use.
00:12:56Override. Authorization: Worf-theta-six-one-nine.
00:13:00COMPUTER: Unable to comply.
00:13:02Holodeck control systems have been bypassed.
00:13:14NIKOLAI: Worf, come in.
00:13:25Nikolai?
00:13:28What are you doing here?
00:13:30I have something to show you.
00:13:32Whatever you do, stay quiet.
00:13:37Look.
00:13:50I've done what you refused to do.
00:13:52I've saved them.
00:14:00NIKOLAI: I started thinking about this days ago when it became clear the planet was doomed.
00:14:04I knew if I could gain access to your ship's computer,
00:14:06I could generate a replica of the caves.
00:14:08The hard part was transporting the Boraalans into the Holodeck without anybody on the Enterprise noticing.
00:14:13But I was able to blank out the sensors and make it look like interference from the plasmonic bursts.
00:14:18And it worked... perfectly.
00:14:20The Boraalans were transported while they were sleeping.
00:14:22They never knew anything had happened.
00:14:26Bridge.
00:14:29It's a simple plan, really, that's the beauty of it.
00:14:31Worf, trust me. This is going to work.
00:14:34Trust you?
00:14:36You never had any intention of obeying the captain.
00:14:40I wasn't going to let those people die just because your captain started quoting
00:14:44Federation dogma to me.
00:14:45Your duty was to respect the captain's orders and to uphold the Prime Directive.
00:14:50Duty?
00:14:52That's all that really matters to you, isn't it?
00:14:54Well, I refuse to be bound by an abstraction.
00:14:56The lives of the people of Boraal are far more important to me.
00:15:00You worry too much, Worf. You always did.
00:15:03Everything will work out.
00:15:06You have disgraced yourself.
00:15:09And you have disgraced me.
00:15:11And I want nothing more to do with you.
00:15:18You realize your career is finished.
00:15:20I know that, Captain, and I would do it all again.
00:15:22What do you expect us to do now?
00:15:24You have left us with a colony of Boraalans who think they're still on their own planet.
00:15:29I didn't beam them up without a plan.
00:15:31I've given this a lot of thought.
00:15:33I think we can find a new planet, an M-class world that can be their new home.
00:15:37A home which would look very different from Boraal.
00:15:39You can't really believe that they'll be fooled.
00:15:41That's where the Holodeck comes in.
00:15:43I'll go back and tell the Boraalans we're going on a journey to a different place where they'll be safe from the storms.
00:15:48The Holodeck can gradually change the terrain as we travel so that, in the end, the Holodeck simulation will match the conditions on the new planet.
00:15:57Then we'll simply beam them down.
00:16:02What if it doesn't work?
00:16:04What if they become aware that something strange is going on?
00:16:08Captain, I can't prepare for every contingency, but I assure you, I'm accustomed to thinking on my feet.
00:16:14I'll deal with the situation as it evolves.
00:16:19I'm not enthusiastic about this plan, but I don't see that we have another option.
00:16:27Very well, let's give it a try.
00:16:29Thank you, Captain.
00:16:36There are countless M-class planets in Federation space that can support the Boraalans.
00:16:40We need to narrow the parameters.
00:16:42It will take approximately 9 1/2 hours to complete the analysis.
00:16:46Even then, there's no guarantee that we'll find a suitable planet.
00:16:49That is correct, sir.
00:16:50Captain, you'd better take a look at this.
00:16:53What is it? We've got a problem, sir.
00:16:56I don't think it's going to be possible to keep this Holodeck simulation stable.
00:17:00PICARD: Why not? LA FORGE: The plasmonic energy bursts from the planet are affecting the ship's systems.
00:17:05We're having problems with the EPS systems and the power distribution matrix.
00:17:08And as a result, the Holodeck imaging processor has been severely destabilized.
00:17:13It's not a question of whether the simulation will break down, it's a question of when.
00:17:17There's no way around it? Not while it's running.
00:17:20In order to fix it, I'd have to shut down all of the Holodecks and re-initialize the entire system.
00:17:25That will take hours.
00:17:26We'll just have to hope the simulation holds long enough.
00:17:31Very well, let's try it.
00:17:33Mr. La Forge, I want you to monitor the situation very carefully and keep an open com link with the Holodeck so as to be apprised of any problems. Aye, sir.
00:17:41Captain, I'll return to the Holodeck as soon as my surgical alterations are completed and I'll prepare the Boraalans for their journey.
00:17:48Considering the situation you have put us in,
00:17:50I don't think it's wise to leave you alone with those people.
00:17:52Mr. Worf will accompany you.
00:17:56Sir, perhaps someone else would be a better choice.
00:17:59Counselor Troi is familiar with...
00:18:01Mr. Worf, the Boraalans already know you.
00:18:03There's no need to introduce them to anyone new.
00:18:06Aye, sir.
00:18:12Keep a close eye on your brother.
00:18:15I don't want him making this situation worse than it is.
00:18:28My friends, we have returned.
00:18:31We have food.
00:18:36This is difficult to say, but you have a right to hear it.
00:18:40By the time Worf and I had reached the surface, the village was gone.
00:18:45The storms have destroyed everything.
00:18:47There is nothing left for us to return to.
00:18:49We can't survive in here.
00:18:51Our supplies won't last forever.
00:18:52That's why we must leave.
00:18:54There is a place far from here where there are no storms.
00:18:57It will be a difficult journey, but, in the end, we will have a new home.
00:19:01I know a way through the caves.
00:19:03We will travel safely until we return to the surface.
00:19:06Where is this new land?
00:19:08As we said, it is far from here.
00:19:11It will not be like the home you knew.
00:19:13Even the stars may be different.
00:19:15Why would they be different?
00:19:18And how do you know we'll be safe there?
00:19:20My brother is a seer.
00:19:22If he says we'll be safe, you must trust that we will be safe.
00:19:25( woman screams )
00:19:29What's wrong? Look!
00:19:39Do not worry. It is an omen.
00:19:43What does it mean?
00:19:47It is the sign... of La Forge.
00:19:52It is a message to travelers.
00:19:55It is said when these lines appear and disappear in a pool of water, the road ahead will be filled with good fortune.
00:20:03Hang in there, Worf.
00:20:05Give me just a second... there.
00:20:14That should do it.
00:20:25You see? Our journey is already blessed.
00:20:28The road ahead is long.
00:20:30Let us have a meal together, then we'll make preparations to leave.
00:20:38Worf, very good work.
00:20:41Apparently, we don't make such a bad team after all.
00:20:44We are not a team.
00:20:47I am here because Captain Picard ordered me here.
00:20:50Worf, don't we both share the same goal?
00:20:52Aren't we both trying to make this plan work?
00:20:54Only because you forced us into it.
00:20:56I'm not ashamed of what I did.
00:20:58I'm not sorry I saved their lives.
00:21:01You have not changed.
00:21:03You still expect people to solve the problems you create.
00:21:07I'm not here to work out the issues of our childhood.
00:21:10I'm here to save a people, who I care about, and if that upsets you, then so be it.
00:21:21DATA: These are the two planets which best match our search criteria.
00:21:25Draygo IV features an unusually large temperate zone.
00:21:29However, it is within three light-years of Cardassian space.
00:21:32There are constant border disputes in that sector.
00:21:35The alternative is Vacca VI.
00:21:37It is located in the Cabral sector.
00:21:40That's pretty isolated.
00:21:42It offers a less hospitable climate than the Boraalans are accustomed to.
00:21:46However, it would still appear to be the better choice.
00:21:50Do you disagree, Doctor?
00:21:52No, Data, you're right.
00:21:54It's just that the enormity of what we're doing is overwhelming.
00:21:57We are deciding the future of a species.
00:22:00It is a formidable responsibility.
00:22:02There are so many questions we don't have answers to.
00:22:05What if the climate is so different that it affects them in a way that we can't anticipate?
00:22:09How do we even know they'll be able to survive?
00:22:11And if they do, how would their society evolve and what impact will it have on the Vaccan system?
00:22:17We have no idea what this decision will mean to their future.
00:22:22Doctor, I do not believe we can offer any guarantees.
00:22:25We can simply make the best choice we have at the moment.
00:22:30All right, Data.
00:22:32Vacca VI it is.
00:22:34Data to Bridge. Picard here.
00:22:36We have located a new home for the Boraalans, sir.
00:22:39It is Vacca VI in the Cabral sector.
00:22:44We can reach that in 42 hours at maximum warp, sir. Very well.
00:22:48Helm, set course for Vacca VI. HELM: Aye, sir.
00:22:57( laughing )
00:23:23What is this?
00:23:26Our chronicle.
00:23:27The history of our village?
00:23:31Doesn't your village keep a chronicle?
00:23:34Not in this manner.
00:23:35Then how do you teach your children their history-- who their ancestors were, where they come from?
00:23:41We tell each other stories... make up songs.
00:23:48Stories change with each person who tells them... but this-- this will always be the same.
00:23:57Our chronicle has been maintained for 17 generations.
00:24:03I was only able to save the last six.
00:24:09This shows the destruction of our village.
00:24:15This is you and Nikolai leading us to safety.
00:24:24We must leave.
00:24:26Gather your belongings.
00:24:37One of the scrolls is gone.
00:24:40I must have dropped it in the passageway.
00:24:42I'll go find it.
00:24:46We must stay together.
00:24:48You will have to leave it behind.
00:24:50Worf, the chronicle is the life of our village.
00:24:54Without that past, our future means nothing.
00:24:58I must find it.
00:25:01Go. And return quickly.
00:25:10Seer.
00:25:13I am an old man.
00:25:14Would you help me with my gear?
00:25:17Of course.
00:25:23That is Tarrana, my daughter.
00:25:27I am fortunate she was old enough to survive the storms.
00:25:31She is a fine girl.
00:25:33Oh, she is a beautiful girl.
00:25:36She has not been promised to anyone.
00:25:38If I do not reach our new home,
00:25:43I would like her to become your wife.
00:25:52You will reach your new home.
00:25:55I promise.
00:26:15( buzzing )
00:27:36Can I help you?
00:27:38( buzz of conversation )
00:27:43Are you okay? Do you need some help?
00:27:47It's okay.
00:27:50Take it easy.
00:27:52All right, everybody, back off. Back off.
00:28:04I know things must look very strange to you, but everything's going to be all right.
00:28:10No one's going to hurt you.
00:28:14We're friends of Nikolai and Worf.
00:28:18Don't be afraid.
00:28:20Nikolai? Yes.
00:28:23He's my friend, and that means you are, too.
00:28:30I promise. I won't hurt you.
00:28:33Please... help me.
00:28:44Where am I?
00:28:51I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do.
00:28:53His neurophysiology is very unusual.
00:28:56I can't wipe his memory.
00:28:58I see. How is he?
00:28:59As well as can be expected.
00:29:00I've given him a mild sedative and Troi's been speaking with him and he seems much calmer.
00:29:06Does he understand the situation? I think so.
00:29:09Contact Mr. Worf.
00:29:10Make sure that he knows what's going on.
00:29:14TROI: Here he is now.
00:29:17This is Captain Picard.
00:29:20Vorin, isn't it?
00:29:22Why did you bring us here?
00:29:24Your planet was dying.
00:29:27It could no longer support life.
00:29:30We took you away from it.
00:29:32But... we never left the caves.
00:29:37We have the ability to create the illusion of other places, like the caves on your planet.
00:29:45You've actually spent the last two days here on this starship, not on Boraal.
00:29:54Then our home... is gone.
00:29:59Yes.
00:30:02PICARD: Vorin, listen to me.
00:30:05We can visit many other worlds.
00:30:07We can take you to one where you can build a new life.
00:30:11A new life?
00:30:13A chance for your culture, your people to survive and grow.
00:30:19How can we grow when everything that made us who we are is gone?
00:30:52Dobara, you go on ahead.
00:31:03I will carry your pack.
00:31:05Go and join the others.
00:31:07Thank you, seer.
00:31:19It will be dark soon-- a few hours.
00:31:28Would you ask Mr. La Forge to create a suitable campsite for us a few kilometers from here?
00:31:33What's wrong?
00:31:34Vorin has left the Holodeck.
00:31:37How did he get out? I do not know.
00:31:39But Dr. Crusher cannot erase his memory.
00:31:42What will they do with him?
00:31:44They've explained the situation to him.
00:31:46He must make his own decisions. Wait.
00:31:49Are you saying that if Vorin wants to come back in here, they'll let him?
00:31:52That is right. He is not a prisoner.
00:31:55But if he comes back here and tells the others what he has seen on the Enterprise, everything we have done will be for nothing.
00:32:01Then you should have considered that before you beamed them on board.
00:32:04But you never think of the consequences of your acts.
00:32:07If you mean by that that I'm willing to do something while others hesitate, that's true.
00:32:11Everywhere you go, you create chaos.
00:32:14How many times did our parents lie awake at night wondering what kind of trouble you were in?
00:32:18Oh, if only I could have been like you--
00:32:20Worf, the perfect son!
00:32:22I was not perfect, but I was not wild and disobedient.
00:32:26Of course not, you were too busy doing your duty.
00:32:29I would rather be accused of that than making our mother weep.
00:32:32But I see it is clear, you have no intention of changing.
00:32:35I see no reason to discuss it further.
00:33:08Commander, the Holodeck malfunctions are increasing.
00:33:12I'm running every stabilization routine I know.
00:33:15WORF: How much longer until we reach the new planet?
00:33:18We'll be there in less than eight hours.
00:33:20You're just going to have to hold things together a little while longer.
00:33:23WORF: Someone is coming.
00:33:30May I speak with you?
00:33:32Yes, of course.
00:33:44I don't know what Nikolai said to you, but please... forgive him?
00:33:50It is an old argument.
00:33:54I've never seen him like this.
00:33:57He's usually so... confident, so sure of himself.
00:34:01But now he seems... different.
00:34:05Do you know why?
00:34:09No. No, I do not.
00:34:12Ever since Vorin was lost, people have been afraid-- worried that we won't reach our new home.
00:34:21We need Nikolai's strength now more than ever.
00:34:24When the storms first came to our village, many of us were ready to die, but Nikolai refused to let us.
00:34:33He gathered us together and led us into caves.
00:34:37He saved us.
00:34:39He is a brave and compassionate man and I love him.
00:34:46Please... go to him.
00:34:50Make things right between you.
00:34:53I want us to be a family.
00:34:55Us?
00:34:58Yes.
00:34:59I want you to consider yourself my brother.
00:35:03After all...
00:35:10...you're going to be the uncle of my child.
00:35:32We are in synchronous orbit over the beam-down site, sir.
00:35:35Good.
00:35:36Mr. La Forge, how much longer before we can transport the Boraalans?
00:35:40LA FORGE: A few more hours, Captain, but we've got some problems here.
00:35:42I don't think the Holodeck's going to last that long.
00:35:45We've had materialization errors and resolution failures all over the place.
00:35:49And it's getting worse.
00:35:50The simulation could fall apart any minute.
00:35:52We'll have the Transporter Room standing by, but we may have to transport the Boraalans whether you're ready or not.
00:35:57Please keep Mr. Worf apprised.
00:35:59LA FORGE: Aye, sir.
00:36:02You have the Bridge, Number One.
00:36:04We still have one more problem to worry about.
00:36:11( door chimes )
00:36:15( door chimes )
00:36:22Yes.
00:36:26We have arrived at the planet that I told you about.
00:36:30Have you made a decision?
00:36:33I believe I would like to go back to my people.
00:36:36I see.
00:36:39What do you intend to tell them?
00:36:44I don't know.
00:36:48If you tell them the truth, what will happen?
00:36:51Will they believe you?
00:36:53( laughing )
00:36:56I'm not sure.
00:36:58It is a fantastic story.
00:37:02Perhaps they will think that you have had an hallucination or that you're insane.
00:37:09I don't think I would like to live the rest of my life knowing what I know and being regarded as a madman.
00:37:17On the other hand, they may believe your fantastic story.
00:37:22They will learn about... alien worlds, starships.
00:37:26That would be disastrous.
00:37:28It would destroy everything they believed in.
00:37:36I can't tell them the truth... but I don't think I can live with a secret.
00:37:47Then stay here.
00:37:49Make a future for yourself with us.
00:37:58I need some time.
00:38:02Please.
00:38:17How could you have mated with a Boraalan?
00:38:19What were you thinking?!
00:38:21I don't owe you an explanation.
00:38:22This is a matter between Dobara and myself.
00:38:24As usual, you are only thinking of yourself.
00:38:27And as usual, you are here to point out the error of my ways.
00:38:29You have treated Dobara with dishonor. I have not!
00:38:33I love her and we are going to raise our child together. That is not possible!
00:38:36I cannot allow you to remain here.
00:38:38You will have to kill me first!
00:38:39( loud crackling )
00:38:46What does it mean? The storms have returned.
00:38:48We'll all be killed. No, you won't.
00:38:50Worf has the power to end the storms once and for all.
00:38:54Yes, but everyone must take shelter in the tents.
00:38:57The tents won't protect us. Worf will protect you. You must trust him.
00:39:00Hurry, hurry. Get to your tents now.
00:39:03Commander, it might be helpful if you could produce a storm-- wind, lightning and thunder.
00:39:07I'll see what I can do.
00:39:15NIKOLAI: Get in! Get in!
00:39:20The storm is getting worse!
00:39:24Stay inside.
00:39:27Worf and I will take care of you.
00:39:36Commander, energize.
00:39:58The storms will not return.
00:40:03As I said he would, my brother Worf has saved us all.
00:40:17Captain's Log, Stardate 47427.2:
00:40:21The Boraalans have safely reached the site
00:40:23of what will eventually become their new village.
00:40:25None of them suspects they ever left their planet.
00:40:28However, our success has come at a high price.
00:40:32I think it was some form of ritual suicide.
00:40:35He said that he had nowhere to go.
00:40:39He would have died even if we hadn't interfered.
00:40:42But he wouldn't have died alone... and afraid.
00:40:46Are you saying you're sorry we saved the Boraalans? No, of course not.
00:40:50Our plan for them worked out well.
00:40:53( sighs )
00:40:54But I wish that Vorin could have bridged the gap between our two cultures.
00:41:01I would have liked the chance to have known him better.
00:41:19What?
00:41:23Go inside.
00:41:25Nikolai, don't. Please.
00:41:44I told you you would have to kill me to get me away from here.
00:41:51I do not want to fight you, Nikolai.
00:41:59Things were never easy between us, were they?
00:42:04No.
00:42:08It's my fault.
00:42:12If I had been more like you, we wouldn't have had so many problems.
00:42:18No.
00:42:19If you had been more like me, these people would not be here now.
00:42:29You gave them a chance at a new life.
00:42:31And I intend to share that life with them.
00:42:34The village will need a new chronicle.
00:42:37Someone has to begin it.
00:42:40My child will need a father.
00:42:43My place is here.
00:42:46I'm finally taking responsibility.
00:42:54You were never good at drawing.
00:42:57How will you keep a chronicle?
00:42:59I learn quickly.
00:43:01Then perhaps there is hope.
00:43:26Could I take this with me?
00:43:29Hmm... it's yours.
00:43:37I will have to explain all of this to mother and father.
00:43:42They won't understand.
00:43:43They may.
00:43:45I will tell them... that you are happy.
