Eye of the Beholder
00:00:01( alarm wailing )
00:00:04We are losing containment in the starboard nacelle tube.
00:00:06Try to get more power to the field coils. Aye, sir.
00:00:10Mr. La Forge, report.
00:00:12I can't shut down the plasma injectors.
00:00:14Somebody's locked out the controls.
00:00:16The plasma venting system has engaged.
00:00:25Two more decks.
00:00:28Riker to Bridge.
00:00:30We've almost reached the nacelle tube.
00:00:32PICARD: Acknowledged.
00:00:33Release the exterior hull plate.
00:00:35We may have to jettison the core.
00:00:37Aye, sir.
00:00:43What happened?
00:00:44He locked out the controls.
00:00:46Before we knew what was happening, he stepped up onto the walkway.
00:00:49See if you can help shut down the plasma flow.
00:00:53I'm afraid if we try to get any closer, he will jump through the force field.
00:01:08Dan...? It's me. It's Will Riker.
00:01:21I was here yesterday, remember?
00:01:25I didn't want to do it.
00:01:33But I saw them, and they laughed at me.
00:01:42They laughed.
00:01:43Whatever happened, we can talk about it.
00:01:46I want to help.
00:01:47Stay away!
00:01:51I just want to see your face.
00:01:53That's all... so we can talk.
00:01:58I... know what I have to do.
00:02:04Dan, no!
00:02:06I have unlocked the controls.
00:02:07COMPUTER: Shutdown procedure initiated.
00:02:10There's still plasma in the injector.
00:02:11It will take time to vent off.
00:02:13Tell me what happened.
00:02:15Maybe I can help.
00:02:17I know what I have to do.
00:02:57PICARD: Space... the final frontier.
00:03:02These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:03:06Its continuing mission--
00:03:07to explore strange new worlds...
00:03:11to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:03:16to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:04:20A few more seconds, I could have saved his life.
00:04:23Commander, you did everything you could.
00:04:25It was not your fault.
00:04:29It was strange.
00:04:31I felt as if he didn't even recognize me... even though I was with him just the other day when I supervised the tube refit.
00:04:38How did he seem then?
00:04:40Fine.
00:04:41I complimented him on getting the refit done faster than expected.
00:04:46He was pleased that I had noticed.
00:04:48I met with him about six weeks ago during the crew evaluations.
00:04:53He was very positive.
00:04:55He was looking forward to being posted to the nacelle tube.
00:04:58He was a good officer with a fine career ahead of him.
00:05:02I don't understand why he wanted...
00:05:05( sighs )
00:05:10In my years as a Starfleet Captain,
00:05:13I have had to notify many parents of the loss of loved ones, but never before to suicide.
00:05:19I would like to be able to offer Lieutenant Kwan's parents some explanation of what happened to try to help them make sense of this.
00:05:28Well, maybe he left, um... a message of some kind explaining why he did it.
00:05:35I would like the two of you to piece together a picture of his last few days.
00:05:39If he made any personal logs, it might be helpful to look through them.
00:05:43You're authorized to do so.
00:05:49La Forge to Captain. Go ahead.
00:05:51I've just finished my damage assessment.
00:05:53We should be able to get underway,
00:05:55I'd say within the hour.
00:05:57Mr. La Forge, the medical situation on Barson II has worsened.
00:06:00Starfleet has given us permission to exceed warp speed limitations so as to get back on schedule.
00:06:05We'll be able to give you warp eight if we need it. Acknowledged.
00:06:09Geordi... would you agree that the instinct for self-preservation is shared by most life-forms?
00:06:17I'd say it's probably the most basic instinct, Data.
00:06:20That being the case,
00:06:22I find it difficult to understand why someone would deliberately terminate their own existence.
00:06:28( sighs ) I don't know, Data.
00:06:30All I can think is that maybe Lieutenant Kwan felt that there was something... wrong with his life.
00:06:37Something that he felt powerless to fix.
00:06:41I believe I understand.
00:06:43I have been in a similar situation.
00:06:48Really?
00:06:51The first months following my activation were a difficult period for me.
00:06:56There were many problems associated with my becoming sentient.
00:06:59Because your neural net was still forming.
00:07:02Mm-hmm.
00:07:04As I acquired new skills, neural pathways would form replacing other less complex pathways.
00:07:11It was very... disorienting.
00:07:14I bet.
00:07:15As my systems grew in complexity, it became increasingly difficult to integrate new pathways into my existing neural net.
00:07:23The probability of cascade failure grew with each additional pathway.
00:07:28I came to the conclusion it would be safer, and easier, to shut myself down and start again.
00:07:34Yeah, but if you had done that, you wouldn't have remembered any of the things that had happened to you.
00:07:38In a way... it would have been like committing suicide.
00:07:43So what did you do?
00:07:46I decided against the procedure.
00:07:48I chose, instead, to treat the problems I was having with my systems as challenges to overcome rather than obstacles to be avoided.
00:07:56That's a great way to look at it, Data.
00:07:59I only wish Lieutenant Kwan had been able to look at his problems the same way.
00:08:12This is a Napean design.
00:08:14His mother is Napean.
00:08:16His father is human.
00:08:19It all looks so normal.
00:08:21For some reason, I half expected the place to be a mess.
00:08:24Yes.
00:08:26It is strange to think that someone could have considered ending his life and yet give no outward sign.
00:08:32Just before he jumped, he seemed almost... calm.
00:08:36Well, he must have been in a lot of pain to do what he did.
00:08:41It could be that the prospect of ending the pain felt like a great relief.
00:08:49This is Ensign Calloway, isn't it? Yes.
00:08:52She is a medical technician in Sick Bay.
00:08:54It's always hard to lose someone you care about, but to lose them like this...
00:09:00We should check his personal logs.
00:09:10This is his last entry.
00:09:12He made it before going on duty this morning.
00:09:14Personal Log, Stardate 47622.1:
00:09:18We finally finished the nacelle tube refit last night.
00:09:21After pulling two double shifts in a row,
00:09:24I'm really looking forward to spending some time with Maddy.
00:09:29Ensign Calloway.
00:09:31That doesn't sound like a man who's planning on taking his own life.
00:09:35No. No, it does not.
00:09:50I can't believe he's really gone.
00:09:55I keep thinking he's going to show up and tell me there's been some kind of terrible misunderstanding.
00:10:01I thought you might like to know that in his personal logs,
00:10:05Dan talked about you a great deal.
00:10:08He loved you very much.
00:10:09If that's true... then how could he leave me like this?
00:10:15That's what I'm trying to find out.
00:10:16I know it's hard to talk right now, but it would be very helpful if you could tell me a few things about him.
00:10:23When was the last time you saw him?
00:10:26Two nights ago.
00:10:27We were planning our next shore leave together.
00:10:30Did he mention anything that had happened recently, anything that might have upset him?
00:10:35No, not really.
00:10:37He did say something about work, about Lieutenant Nara, but it wasn't anything serious.
00:10:43Nara... she's his superior in the nacelle tube.
00:10:46Yes.
00:10:48Dan sensed that she...
00:10:51Well, that she felt threatened by him-- that she thought he was after her position.
00:10:56Was he prone to mood swings or depression?
00:10:59No... but he was very sensitive to other people's moods.
00:11:05He used to look at me and know exactly what I was feeling.
00:11:09I always loved that about him.
00:11:11Well, Napeans are partially empathetic.
00:11:14He may have inherited some of his mother's abilities.
00:11:17He used to tease me that when I met her,
00:11:20I wouldn't be able to get away with anything.
00:11:25Dan and I knew each other for over two years, but we didn't get together until a few months ago.
00:11:32We took it slow.
00:11:33We thought we had all the time in the world.
00:11:38Something must have happened to him, Counselor-- something terrible-- because it's not like Dan to take his own life. I understand.
00:11:47Please... find out what it was.
00:12:06Can I help you? ( gasps )
00:12:08Oh, I didn't see you there.
00:12:09You're Lieutenant Nara, aren't you?
00:12:12Can I do something for you, Counselor?
00:12:14I'm investigating Lieutenant Kwan's death.
00:12:17I just wanted to look around.
00:12:20It's such a shame.
00:12:22He was a good man.
00:12:26Did you notice any change in his behavior recently?
00:12:30No.
00:12:32I've been going over the last few days in my mind, trying to see if I... if I missed any warning signs.
00:12:42It's as if something inside him just snapped.
00:12:45How was his job performance?
00:12:48Excellent.
00:12:49He knew this ship better than most people, probably because he helped build it back at Utopia Planitia.
00:12:54Did he get along with his coworkers?
00:12:56He was ambitious.
00:12:59He came in here with all sorts of new ideas about how to do things-- some of them very good ideas.
00:13:04But not all?
00:13:05No.
00:13:07But after he settled in, we got along fine.
00:13:12Excuse me a minute.
00:13:13Feel free to look around.
00:13:15Where was Lieutenant Kwan's station?
00:13:18Right there.
00:14:04( gasping )
00:14:23Are you all right? ( gasps )
00:14:28I don't know.
00:14:39I don't know how to describe it.
00:14:40I was suddenly overwhelmed by a flood of emotions-- fear, rage, panic-- and the sensations didn't seem to be coming from any person.
00:14:49They were just there in the room.
00:14:52Well, then whose emotions were they?
00:14:53I thought you said you were alone.
00:14:55I was.
00:14:57I scanned the area.
00:14:59I found no anomalous readings.
00:15:01How could you get an empathic impression from an empty room?
00:15:04I don't know.
00:15:05Could the fact that Lieutenant Kwan was partially empathic have anything to do with it?
00:15:09What do you mean?
00:15:10I'm not sure, but certainly the feelings Troi described are consistent with suicide.
00:15:16Could his death have left some sort of empathic echo?
00:15:19I don't see how, but if I went back to the nacelle tube,
00:15:24I might get a better sense of what I experienced.
00:15:27I don't think I'd recommend that right now.
00:15:28You're showing elevated levels of psilosynine.
00:15:30Psilosynine?
00:15:32It's a neurotransmitter involved in telepathy.
00:15:35The experience overwhelmed you the first time.
00:15:37I think you should wait until your levels return to normal.
00:15:40How long?
00:15:42Three, maybe four hours.
00:15:45This time, I want someone with you.
00:15:48I shall accompany you, Counselor.
00:15:53Captain's Log, Stardate 47623.2:
00:15:57We've arrived at Starbase 328 on schedule.
00:16:01After taking aboard medical supplies,
00:16:03we will depart for Barson II.
00:16:06( door chimes ) Come in.
00:16:10Hello, Worf. Counselor.
00:16:12Have you found anything in Lieutenant Kwan's logs?
00:16:16Everything I've read suggests that he was well-adjusted and optimistic.
00:16:21It just doesn't make any sense.
00:16:24Can I get you anything?
00:16:26No. No, nothing.
00:16:28Yridian tea.
00:16:33I've been thinking about what happened to me in the nacelle tube... whether it was an empathic echo left by Kwan's death.
00:16:45In the past, have your empathic experiences always involved the physical presence of another person?
00:16:50All the ones I'm sure of, yes.
00:16:53What do you mean, "sure of"?
00:16:57Well, when I was a little girl, my grandfather used to tell me stories by the fire.
00:17:03I would close my eyes and listen to his mind for hours on end.
00:17:08He would tell you these stories telepathically?
00:17:12My grandfather rarely spoke.
00:17:14He said that was for off-worlders and people who didn't know any better.
00:17:20Now, the only time I can remember his stories is when I go home and sit by the fireplace.
00:17:27Sometimes, when I'm alone there, it's almost as if I can hear his voice inside my head.
00:17:34Yes. Yes, I, too, have sought visions in fire.
00:17:38I can't explain it, but it feels real to me.
00:17:42Just like what happened in the nacelle tube.
00:17:46There are things we do not understand, yet they exist nonetheless.
00:17:54( sighs )
00:17:58Perhaps I should let you get some rest.
00:18:00Oh, it's all right.
00:18:02No. If you will excuse me, Counselor.
00:18:25I'll be right back.
00:18:29Mr. Worf. Commander.
00:18:32Two Til'amin froths, please. Yes, sir.
00:18:41Lieutenant Corell seems to be enjoying your company.
00:18:44I'd like to think so.
00:18:46Are you involved with her?
00:18:51I'm not sure yet.
00:18:53Why, are you interested in her?
00:18:55No, no.
00:18:56But, if I were, I would, of course, discuss the situation with you before proceeding further.
00:19:01I appreciate it, but that really wouldn't have been necessary.
00:19:04I mean, I would never want to come between you and someone you are involved with or had ever had been involved with.
00:19:11Is there someone in particular that you're talking about?
00:19:14No.
00:19:16Is there someone in particular you would rather I not be involved with?
00:19:20Mr. Worf, you sound like a man who's asking his friend if he can start dating his sister.
00:19:23No, no, I was merely...
00:19:26Never mind. Excuse me, sir.
00:20:05Could you open this door for me?
00:20:07Yes, but only for a short time.
00:20:09After 90 seconds, the plasma venting system will engage to prevent degradation of the force field.
00:20:16I just want to take a quick look.
00:20:18May I ask what you're looking for?
00:20:20I'm not sure.
00:20:27( alarm wailing )
00:20:29COMPUTER: Warning-- plasma venting system will engage in 90 seconds.
00:20:35( sharp thud, Troi gasps )
00:20:37No, no! No, please!
00:20:40Please, please!
00:20:42No! Don't!
00:20:44No!
00:20:45( thud )
00:20:46COMPUTER: Warning-- plasma venting system will engage in 80 seconds.
00:20:51( thud )
00:20:55( thud )
00:21:03Worf?
00:21:21Worf?
00:21:39( woman laughing )
00:21:45( murmured conversation )
00:21:56( suppressing laughter )
00:21:58( both laughing )
00:22:06Counselor, are you all right?
00:22:15Let's get out of here.
00:22:25Do you remember anything else?
00:22:27TROI: Yes, I think I do.
00:22:29There was a tool crate on the floor.
00:22:31It was labeled "Utopia Planitia."
00:22:34The shipyard where the Enterprise was built.
00:22:39Clearly, this was much more than an empathic echo.
00:22:42It seems that you were actually seeing something that happened in the Control Room eight years ago.
00:22:47Everyone was looking directly at me, but it was as though
00:22:51I was seeing through someone else's eyes.
00:22:54Lieutenant Kwan was partially empathic.
00:22:56Maybe you were seeing it through his eyes.
00:22:58It's possible, but I don't see how it could have happened.
00:23:02Well, putting that on one side for the moment, let's assume that by some inexplicable phenomenon, you witnessed an event that occurred to Lieutenant Kwan.
00:23:13Those faces that you saw-- did you recognize any of them?
00:23:17I've never seen the woman before, or the man who was with her.
00:23:21But there was someone else there-- a man.
00:23:27He was staring at me in the most peculiar way.
00:23:32I think he had reddish hair and he did seem familiar to me.
00:23:40But it's all so hazy.
00:23:41It's like trying to remember a dream.
00:23:43There was a woman who was frightened and then you saw her again, laughing, presumably at Lieutenant Kwan.
00:23:52What does it all mean?
00:23:54I don't know, but something terrible happened in that room.
00:23:56I felt it.
00:23:58Counselor, I want you to look through the personnel files of Utopia Planitia.
00:24:01See if you recognize any of those faces.
00:24:03If only I could go back into the Control Room without being overwhelmed by the experience.
00:24:08It might help me remember some detail that might be relevant.
00:24:12I could give you an inhibitor that would slow down the brain's production of psilosynine.
00:24:16That might be able to suppress your empathic abilities and make the experience more manageable.
00:24:21It would take about 16 hours to synthesize the inhibitor.
00:24:24I'd like to try that. Very well, Counselor.
00:24:30( sighs )
00:24:34I apologize for being late.
00:24:36The viral medicines we are transporting to Barson II require special security measures to insure they are properly contained.
00:24:45Have you found anything?
00:24:46No.
00:24:48There were literally thousands of people involved in building the Enterprise.
00:24:55Perhaps you should try to narrow the search parameters.
00:24:59I think I have.
00:25:00The man who looked familiar to me may have served on board the Enterprise in the last seven years, so I've asked the computer to limit its search to personnel who served at Utopia Planitia and on the Enterprise.
00:25:13Ensign Salvatore-- he transferred over a year ago.
00:25:17Lieutenant Ziff-- she's in quantum mechanics.
00:25:23That's him.
00:25:24WORF: Lieutenant Walter Pierce.
00:25:27I remember now.
00:25:28He came on board about six months ago.
00:25:30I think he's in Engineering.
00:25:40You were Lieutenant Kwan's supervisor at Utopia Planitia.
00:25:44That's right.
00:25:45I was sorry to hear what happened.
00:25:47Did you ever spend time in the nacelle Control Room while it was under construction?
00:25:53I worked all over the ship.
00:25:55In fact, I remember running a power conduit right behind this wall, here.
00:26:01TROI: Were you ever in the nacelle room at the same time as Lieutenant Kwan?
00:26:05It was a long time ago.
00:26:07People were working all over the place.
00:26:09So you do not remember?
00:26:11I'm sorry, I don't.
00:26:15Do you recall if anything unusual happened there?
00:26:19How do you mean?
00:26:20An altercation perhaps?
00:26:22Possibly involving Lieutenant Kwan.
00:26:24No, nothing like that.
00:26:27The way I remember it, things went pretty smoothly.
00:26:30What's this all about, if you don't mind my asking? Not at all.
00:26:34When I was in the nacelle room, I had an empathic experience.
00:26:38We believe the Counselor may have been seeing an event that occurred eight years ago.
00:26:43And I saw you there.
00:26:45Do you have any idea why that might be?
00:26:48I'm afraid I don't.
00:26:50Lieutenant, are you aware that I can sense when someone's telling the truth?
00:26:55I've heard that.
00:26:57Then, I'm sure that if you remember anything that might be relevant to our investigation, you'll contact me.
00:27:03Oh, of course.
00:27:05Thank you, Lieutenant.
00:27:08Counselor.
00:27:15The strange thing is, I couldn't read him at all.
00:27:19But you implied that...
00:27:21We have played poker many times.
00:27:24I've never known you to bluff.
00:27:25Well, it wouldn't be much of a bluff if you knew, would it?
00:27:29The fact that I couldn't read him suggests that he has at least some telepathic ability.
00:27:34But Pierce is human.
00:27:35That's what I don't understand.
00:27:38Even though I couldn't read his emotions,
00:27:40I did feel that he was holding something back.
00:27:42I thought so, as well.
00:27:45Maybe we should try to access the Engineering logs from Utopia Planitia.
00:27:49We might find out more about him.
00:27:51There may be something in them about Lieutenant Kwan, as well.
00:27:54Mm-hmm.
00:28:08It's going to take about half an hour for the transmission to be completed.
00:28:13Perhaps we should continue this in the morning.
00:28:18It is late.
00:28:20Yes, and you must be tired.
00:28:23A little.
00:28:25So, I will say good night.
00:28:29Good night.
00:28:34We should get an early start tomorrow.
00:28:37I think we should.
00:28:39I'll see you in the morning.
00:28:42Yes.
00:29:49Hello.
00:29:50Breakfast is ready.
00:29:52That sounds nice, but it can wait.
00:30:02Why didn't we do this a long time ago?
00:30:05DR. CRUSHER: Crusher to Counselor Troi.
00:30:09Yes, Doctor?
00:30:11I've synthesized the inhibitor.
00:30:13Please come to Sick Bay whenever you're ready.
00:30:14Acknowledged.
00:30:18DR. CRUSHER: Crusher to Lieutenant Worf.
00:30:22Worf here.
00:30:24DR. CRUSHER: Medical supplies are ready to be taken to Cargo Bay for transport.
00:30:28I will be there shortly.
00:30:35This should take effect immediately.
00:30:39Will it completely suppress my empathic abilities?
00:30:42It's hard to say for sure, but I can always increase the dosage if it's not enough.
00:30:48The Cargo Bay will be off limits to all but medical personnel.
00:30:52Thanks for your help, sir. You're welcome.
00:30:57Good morning. Counselor.
00:31:00Data and Geordi are already in the nacelle tube.
00:31:02Are you ready? Yes.
00:31:07CALLOWAY: Excuse me, sir.
00:31:09About the quarantine field in the Cargo Bay, it looks like we'll need a second field generator.
00:31:15I am needed here.
00:31:17I will join you as soon as I can.
00:31:18All right.
00:31:20WORF: Apparently my help was not so good after all.
00:31:22CALLOWAY: ( chuckles ) Yes, it was.
00:31:24You were wonderful.
00:31:26I think I know what is wrong.
00:31:27The generator dispersion...
00:31:39Counselor, are you okay?
00:31:43I'm fine.
00:31:44The inhibitor seems to be working.
00:31:46Have you found anything?
00:31:48No, nothing unusual.
00:31:58I don't remember seeing these during my empathic experience.
00:32:01Have they been here since the ship was built?
00:32:03No, they were installed two years ago.
00:32:14Geordi...
00:32:20I remember seeing a plasma conduit right there.
00:32:23The main ODN line runs right behind that panel.
00:32:27It lifts out, so you can get to it.
00:32:29Kwan was working on that conduit the day before he died.
00:32:33Can you open it?
00:32:34Sure, it'll take just a minute.
00:32:42Data.
00:32:59Lieutenant Nara, may I ask you something?
00:33:03The work Lieutenant Kwan was doing-- was it unusual in any way?
00:33:07He was refitting a field coil, but it was probably the first time that particular panel's been opened since the ship was built.
00:33:16Thank you.
00:33:26( sharp thud )
00:33:27No!
00:33:33LA FORGE: Counselor?
00:33:36Are you all right?
00:33:38Something happened when you removed the panel.
00:33:42There's something in there.
00:33:51I am getting readings that indicate organic material embedded in this wall.
00:33:56Organic?
00:33:57( tool humming )
00:33:58You're right.
00:34:00Let me reconfigure the emitter beam.
00:34:02We might be able to see what it is.
00:34:03There.
00:34:17This dosage should prevent any further empathic flashes.
00:34:23The bone fragments are definitely human.
00:34:26I sequenced a DNA sample.
00:34:28I'll see if I can match it to Starfleet records.
00:34:35Accessing Starfleet personnel records.
00:34:38I'd say these fragments have been in the wall about seven or eight years.
00:34:41WORF: ...your help with the Barson medical supplies...
00:34:44DR. CRUSHER: You said something happened when the panel was opened.
00:34:47Yes.
00:34:48I wonder if these fragments could have somehow triggered your experience?
00:34:52I'll run a resonance scan, see if anything turns up.
00:34:55Sir, I think we've found a match.
00:35:00Apparently, the remains are those of an Ensign Marla Finn.
00:35:04I'm trying to find a picture of her in the records.
00:35:08TROI: That's her.
00:35:10That's the woman I saw.
00:35:16It says she was reported missing
00:35:18"from Utopia Planitia on Stardate 40987.2."
00:35:23Eight years ago.
00:35:26But how did her body become embedded in a bulkhead?
00:35:29Maybe there was some kind of an accident.
00:35:31Or she was killed and the murderer hid her remains.
00:35:35Something's not right.
00:35:37Pull up Lieutenant Kwan's service record.
00:35:42I thought so.
00:35:44He didn't arrive at the shipyard until six months after Finn's death.
00:35:48I couldn't have been seeing through his eyes.
00:35:50Then whose?
00:35:52Well, it would have to be someone who was at least partially telepathic.
00:35:55Pierce.
00:35:56DR. CRUSHER: But you saw him there.
00:35:59Yes, but not as clearly as I could see everything else.
00:36:02His face looked... like that.
00:36:07DR. CRUSHER: A reflection.
00:36:08So I was seeing through his eyes.
00:36:12And Finn was trying to get away from him.
00:36:14She was afraid of him.
00:36:17I think it is time we had another conversation with Lieutenant Pierce.
00:36:23Ensign Calloway... thank you for your help.
00:37:00Deck ten.
00:37:02Worf, can I ask you something?
00:37:04Do you regret what happened last night?
00:37:08No. No, of course not. Are you sure?
00:37:11Because I don't want to jeopardize our friendship.
00:37:13Deanna, I do not regret being with you.
00:37:20What is wrong?
00:37:24( sighs )
00:37:25I'm not... feeling myself.
00:37:28Maybe it's the inhibitor.
00:37:30I'm so used to sensing what people are feeling and now I can't.
00:37:35Perhaps I should talk to Lieutenant Pierce alone.
00:37:38That might be a good idea.
00:37:40I will meet you in your quarters later.
00:37:43I'll be waiting for you.
00:37:52Deck eight.
00:38:05( door chimes )
00:38:07Come in.
00:38:22Security to Counselor Troi's quarters. SECURITY: Acknowledged.
00:38:26I don't understand.
00:38:28Lieutenant Worf said you wanted to talk to me about something.
00:38:30Where is he?
00:38:32He said he had to go somewhere.
00:38:34Troi to Worf.
00:38:38Computer, where is Lieutenant Worf?
00:38:41COMPUTER: Lieutenant Worf is in Ensign Calloway's quarters.
00:38:46( door opens )
00:38:48Counselor?
00:38:50Take Lieutenant Pierce to his quarters and hold him there.
00:39:15Security override.
00:39:17Authorization: Troi-delta-two-nine.
00:39:25( giggling )
00:39:30Stop it.
00:39:38Stop it!
00:39:41Stop it!
00:39:45( gasps )
00:39:47( screams )
00:39:55( gasping )
00:39:57( cries out )
00:39:58CALLOWAY: He's dead.
00:40:00You killed him!
00:40:02No!
00:40:15You know what you have to do.
00:40:17( whimpering )
00:41:02I know what I have to do.
00:41:11COMPUTER: Warning-- What are you doing?
00:41:13COMPUTER: Plasma venting system will engage in 70 seconds.
00:41:16You're alive.
00:41:17You're all right.
00:41:33I opened the maintenance door at Counselor Troi's request.
00:41:36Then turned to see her standing too close to the force field.
00:41:39It all seemed so real to me.
00:41:41I can't believe that everything I experienced happened in just those few seconds.
00:41:45It appears Counselor Troi was correct.
00:41:48Pierce was partially telepathic.
00:41:51His maternal grandmother was born on Betazed.
00:41:54What else have you found out?
00:41:56DATA: According to Starfleet records
00:41:58Pierce and the other persons Counselor Troi identified were killed in an accidental plasma discharge eight years ago.
00:42:05Their bodies were never found.
00:42:07I don't believe it was an accident.
00:42:09I think Lieutenant Pierce found out the other two were having an affair.
00:42:12He lost control and he killed them both.
00:42:15Afterwards, he probably activated the plasma stream and then threw himself into it.
00:42:20The plasma discharge would have obliterated any evidence that it was murder.
00:42:24( door opens )
00:42:28I scanned behind the panel Counselor Troi asked me to.
00:42:32I didn't find any bone fragments, but I did find some traces of cellular residue.
00:42:38It's showing some kind of psionic signature.
00:42:41It may be that when Lieutenant Pierce was struck by the plasma stream, the subspace energy present there imprinted his empathic pattern into the residue.
00:42:50Kind of like a psychic photograph.
00:42:52That's what triggered my hallucination.
00:42:55My mind must have taken elements from my own life and then created a situation that, in many ways, mirrored what happened to Pierce.
00:43:07If you hadn't been there,
00:43:09I would have jumped just like he did.
00:43:21Counselor.
00:43:27When I pulled you from the plasma stream, you seemed... surprised I was alive.
00:43:34Well, actually... in my hallucination, you were killed.
00:43:39May I ask by whom?
00:43:42Well, you know what they say, Mr. Worf.
00:43:45Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
