Emergence
00:00:01Graves at my command have wak'd their sleepers.
00:00:05Op'd, and let 'em forth by my so potent art.
00:00:10But this rough magic I here abjure, and when I have requir'd some heavenly music-- which even now I do-- to work mine end upon their senses that this airy charm is for,
00:00:26I'll break my staff, bury it certain fathoms in the earth, and deeper than did ever plummet sound,
00:00:38I'll...
00:00:40Captain?
00:00:41Sir, your attention is wandering.
00:00:44Data, I can barely see you.
00:00:46But, sir, I am supposed to be attempting a Neoplatonic magical rite.
00:00:52The darkness is appropriate for such a ritual.
00:00:55Yes, but, Data, this is a play.
00:00:56The audience has to see you.
00:00:58Hmm.
00:01:00Perhaps I have been too literal with respect to my set design.
00:01:03Computer, modify holodeck program
00:01:06Data 7-3, Shakespeare's The Tempest,
00:01:08Act Five, Scene One.
00:01:10Increase torch light by... 20%.
00:01:15There, that's much better.
00:01:16Now, do you want to try it again?
00:01:18Yes, sir.
00:01:21Captain, I am not certain I fully understand this Prospero character.
00:01:27I would appreciate any insight you might have that would improve my performance.
00:01:33Well, Data, Shakespeare was witnessing the end of the Renaissance and the birth of the modern era, and Prospero finds himself in a world where his powers are no longer needed.
00:01:46So, we see him here about to perform one final creative act before giving up his art forever.
00:01:55Hmm. There is certainly a tragic aspect to the character.
00:01:58Yes, but there's a--
00:02:00( distant train whistles ) a certain expectancy, too, um, a hopefulness about the future.
00:02:05You see, Shakespeare enjoyed mixing opposites-- the past and-- and the future, hope and despair...
00:02:14Data, what is this?
00:02:16Is this part of your program?
00:02:17( train whistling ) DATA: No, sir.
00:02:19Well, what is going on?
00:02:21It appears to be a steam locomotive.
00:02:23A train?
00:02:24If I am not mistaken.
00:02:26Computer, end program.
00:02:27( train chugging closer )
00:02:29Computer, end program!
00:02:30( train whistle blowing )
00:03:21Space, the final frontier.
00:03:26These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise.
00:03:30Its continuing mission--
00:03:32to explore strange new worlds,
00:03:36to seek out new life and new civilizations,
00:03:40to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:04:42Captain?
00:04:45You are injured.
00:04:46Oh, yes, I know. It's all right.
00:04:48I will get it seen to, Data.
00:04:55The train we encountered was from one of Dr. Crusher's holodeck programs.
00:04:59It was a re-creation of the Orient Express, a train which traveled from Paris to Istanbul from the late 19th century...
00:05:06Yes, yes, Data, I know about the Orient Express, but what is it doing on Prospero's island?
00:05:13There appears to have been a malfunction in the holodeck's database retrieval program.
00:05:17The two programs somehow temporarily linked together.
00:05:20Is it possible that this malfunction would affect the other holodecks as well?
00:05:24It is a possibility. I will need to run a full diagnostic to be certain.
00:05:27Very good, Data, but shut down the other holodecks as well until you're finished, just to be on the safe side.
00:05:32Aye, sir.
00:05:38I never realized that you were interested in trains.
00:05:42Are you aware that, at its peak, the Orient Express carried more than 10,000 people a year?
00:05:47It isn't really the train itself that I'm interested in.
00:05:50What then? It's the experience.
00:05:54The Orient Express is romantic, mysterious.
00:05:57It's an elegant way to see exotic places and meet fascinating people.
00:06:02Do you know that, one time, on one trip, both Sigmund Freud and Gertrude Stein just happened to be in the same car?
00:06:08They ended up having dinner together every night.
00:06:11I wonder what they talked about?
00:06:13Why don't you take a trip yourself and find out?
00:06:15RIKER: Riker to Picard.
00:06:17Picard here.
00:06:18All sections ready to begin the survey, sir.
00:06:20Very good. I'm on my way.
00:06:22Thank you.
00:06:24Don't forget the trip, Jean-Luc, think about it.
00:06:26You never know who you'll meet on the Orient Express.
00:06:32Captain's Log, Stardate 47869.2.
00:06:36After weathering an unexpected magnascopic storm
00:06:39in the Mekorda sector,
00:06:40we are continuing our search
00:06:42for new Federation colony sites.
00:06:46I don't think there's any possibility of developing sites in this region.
00:06:49Most of the stars are main sequence binaries.
00:06:51There are no M-class planets.
00:06:53Well, let's move on to another survey region.
00:06:55Have stellar cartography begin a...
00:06:59Mr. Data, report.
00:07:00The ship has moved into warp, sir.
00:07:03RIKER: Who gave that command?
00:07:05Apparently, no one.
00:07:06Helm and navigation controls are not functioning.
00:07:09Our speed is now warp 7.3 and holding.
00:07:13Picard to Engineering.
00:07:14Mr. La Forge, what's going on?
00:07:16We've lost primary helm control on the Bridge.
00:07:18I don't understand it.
00:07:19The impulse systems suddenly cut out, and the warp drive just kicked in.
00:07:22RIKER: Geordi, can you take the engines offline?
00:07:24I'm working on it.
00:07:26Mr. Data, what's our heading?
00:07:27Bearing 187 mark 4, sir.
00:07:30I am unable to determine our destination.
00:07:32However, we are moving away from the Mekorda sector.
00:07:35LA FORGE: Captain, the computer's locked out all the propulsion controls.
00:07:38I can't access any of the overrides.
00:07:40If you want us to stop,
00:07:42I'll have to do an emergency core shutdown.
00:07:44That would leave us without warp power for more than a week.
00:07:47Begin the procedure, Mr. La Forge.
00:07:51We are no longer at warp, sir.
00:07:53Impulse power has resumed.
00:07:55All systems show normal.
00:07:57Where are we?
00:07:58We are approximately 30 billion kilometers from our original position.
00:08:02Well done, Mr. La Forge.
00:08:05It wasn't me.
00:08:07I didn't have time to complete the shutdown procedure.
00:08:10PICARD: Well, I want an explanation, Mr. La Forge.
00:08:13Picard out.
00:08:23Have you found anything yet?
00:08:26Only that we seem to have more than one mystery here.
00:08:29We still don't know why the ship jumped into warp, but it looks like we're lucky that it did.
00:08:33There was a theta flux distortion building up around the ship.
00:08:38Why didn't our sensors alert us?
00:08:39Well, our sensors were never designed to detect theta flux distortions, and, yet, there is a record of the distortion in our sensor log.
00:08:46That's the other mystery.
00:08:48One fact is clear, however.
00:08:50The distortion was growing in strength.
00:08:52If we had remained at our original position
00:08:541.7 seconds longer, the distortion would have ruptured our warp core.
00:08:58If the Enterprise hadn't jumped into warp when it did, we would have been blown to pieces.
00:09:24I don't get it, Data.
00:09:26What would cause the engines to suddenly jump into warp?
00:09:29Perhaps the engines were activated by a random power fluctuation.
00:09:33Which occurred just in time to save the ship?
00:09:36It is improbable, but it is possible.
00:09:39I don't know, I don't think I'm ready to start believing in luck.
00:09:53There is another possibility.
00:09:54Yeah? What's that?
00:09:56The sensors apparently detected a dangerous anomaly that threatened the Enterprise.
00:10:02It is possible that they triggered a safety device that caused the ship to avoid destruction.
00:10:09Yeah, but there's no direct link between the warp engines and the sensors.
00:10:16Whoa, what is that?
00:10:20It looks like some kind of new circuit node, and it's connected to at least... half a dozen points on the sensor array.
00:10:28It appears to be connected to several other systems as well, including the warp control circuits.
00:10:33Well, I guess there's a connection between the warp engines and the sensors after all.
00:10:40A force field.
00:10:42Where did that come from?
00:10:44I am not certain.
00:10:46Perhaps it came from the node itself.
00:10:50Well, wherever it came from, it sure doesn't want us messing with this node.
00:10:55It appears to be protecting itself.
00:11:00We found these nodes in several systems around the ship.
00:11:03At some level or another, they're all connected.
00:11:06These nodes were linking the sensors to our warp control and defensive systems.
00:11:11We believe this is why the ship jumped to warp.
00:11:14When the sensors detected danger, the defensive system reacted to the threat and activated the warp engines to protect us.
00:11:19Where did the nodes come from?
00:11:21It is possible the magnascopic storm we recently encountered had an unexpected effect on the ship's systems.
00:11:27Wherever they come from, they seem to be multiplying.
00:11:30As they increase, it will become progressively more difficult to control the ship.
00:11:34What do you propose we do?
00:11:36Well, getting rid of them isn't going to be so easy.
00:11:39When we attempted to examine the circuitry of one of the nodes, it generated a force field to keep us out.
00:11:45Well, whatever's going on, our first priority is getting back control of the ship.
00:11:49Agreed.
00:11:51All of the nodal connections intersect in Holodeck Three.
00:11:55It appears to be a focal point of some kind.
00:11:58We might be able to find a way to use the holodeck's circuitry to disable the nodes permanently.
00:12:03All right, let's do it.
00:12:11Commander, the holodeck appears to be in operation.
00:12:15I thought you shut down the entire system.
00:12:17I did, but it has reactivated itself, and it will not disengage.
00:12:22Which program is running?
00:12:23Several different programs are running simultaneously.
00:12:26This should be interesting.
00:12:31( train wheels rumbling )
00:13:03( spurs jingling )
00:13:30You weren't kidding, Mr. Data.
00:13:32No, sir.
00:13:34I estimate that this... scene consists of portions of seven distinct holodeck programs.
00:13:41See if you can access the circuits that have been affected by the nodes.
00:13:59( train whistle blows )
00:14:05Tickets. Tickets, please.
00:14:08Please have your tickets ready.
00:14:10Thank you, sir.
00:14:12Thank you, madam.
00:14:13Here you are. Thank you.
00:14:16Thank you, sir.
00:14:18Tickets, please.
00:14:20You know, I never even been away from home.
00:14:21Now I'm going all the way to Vertiform City.
00:14:24Very nice, sir.
00:14:25Enjoy your trip. Tickets, please.
00:14:28Tickets? Thank you, sir.
00:14:31Tickets, please.
00:14:34Tickets, please.
00:14:39DATA: Commander? Tickets.
00:14:44I've located a large concentration of nodes behind this wall.
00:14:48They appear to be connected directly to the holodeck's main power coupling.
00:14:52All right, go ahead and depolarize the entire power grid.
00:14:55The power grid is located beneath this deck, sir.
00:14:57CONDUCTOR: Get away from there!
00:15:00Would you gentlemen care to show me your tickets?
00:15:05I believe we left our tickets in our compartments.
00:15:09Mr. Worf, I told you to bring the tickets.
00:15:12I, uh, forgot.
00:15:15I don't think you folks belong on this train.
00:15:19MAN: Hold it!
00:15:22You leave these people alone.
00:15:24They're only trying to help.
00:15:27You go back to the engine.
00:15:30This doesn't concern you.
00:15:31They're all trying to hijack the train.
00:15:34Hey, if you're the engineer, who's doing the driving?
00:15:39( gunshot )
00:15:47I am.
00:15:57Easy, sir, easy. I got you.
00:15:59I'm all right. Thanks.
00:16:05Looks like the navigational relay's overloaded.
00:16:15( bell ringing )
00:16:21PICARD: Geordi, what's going on?
00:16:23We just went into warp.
00:16:24We've lost engine and helm control again, Captain, but this time... they're completely burned out.
00:16:31I don't know if we can stop the ship.
00:16:34I believe we have changed direction.
00:16:36Now we're on the right track.
00:16:40Ladies and gentlemen, we are on our way.
00:16:42( cheering )
00:16:53I was right.
00:16:54He was trying to make off with my brick.
00:16:57Take good care of that.
00:16:59We can't afford to lose it.
00:17:02Now, are you people going to leave, or do we have to throw you off the train?
00:17:08Commander.
00:17:14According to my tricorder, the holodeck safeties have been disengaged.
00:17:18His weapon could be lethal.
00:17:21All right, let's get out of here.
00:17:39The number of systems now being affected by the nodes has increased considerably.
00:17:44Sensors, engines, replicators, propulsion-- they're all working together now, almost independently of the main computer, and the nodes link them all through the holodeck.
00:17:54But why the holodeck? It doesn't make any sense.
00:17:56Commander, I believe what happens on the holodeck has a direct effect on the ship.
00:18:01When we attempted to destroy the nodes, the characters on the train responded almost immediately to stop us.
00:18:11And when the engineer tried to protect us, one of the other characters shot him.
00:18:15Then the conductor signaled for the train to change direction... and, at approximately the same time...
00:18:20The Enterprise also took off in a new direction.
00:18:23Are you saying the ship is under the control of the holodeck?
00:18:25Not precisely.
00:18:27Geordi... does the configuration of connection nodes look familiar to you?
00:18:33Yeah.
00:18:35Yeah, it looks a little like the structure of your positronic brain.
00:18:38DATA: That is correct.
00:18:40It would appear that the nodes are in the process of creating a rudimentary neural net.
00:18:45Data... what are you suggesting?
00:18:48Unlikely as it may sound,
00:18:50I believe the Enterprise
00:18:52may be forming an intelligence.
00:19:05This is a synaptic map of the human neocortex.
00:19:09This is a cross-section of my positronic net.
00:19:12And this is a schematic of the connection nodes linking the ship's systems.
00:19:17I believe some sort of neural matrix is forming on the ship.
00:19:21It is still relatively primitive, but it is an intelligence, nonetheless.
00:19:24How could that happen?
00:19:26I believe it is an emergent property.
00:19:28Explain.
00:19:29Complex systems can sometimes behave in ways that are entirely unpredictable.
00:19:34The human brain, for example, might be described in terms of cellular functions and neurochemical interactions.
00:19:42But that description does not explain human consciousness, a capacity that far exceeds simple neural functions.
00:19:50Consciousness is an emergent property.
00:19:53In other words, something that's more than just the sum of its parts.
00:19:56DATA: Exactly.
00:19:58How does that explain what's happening to the Enterprise?
00:20:00The Enterprise contains a vast database of information which is managed by a sophisticated computer.
00:20:06This complex system gives the ship many of the characteristics of a biological organism.
00:20:12That's true-- it sees with its sensors, and it talks with its communications systems.
00:20:17In a sense, it almost reproduces with the replicators.
00:20:21And you think that the ship has somehow gone beyond these functions.
00:20:24It's developing a new capacity.
00:20:26Yes, sir, I believe a self-determining intelligence is emerging.
00:20:31If that is so, what does the ship want?
00:20:34Where is it taking us?
00:20:35I believe the key to understanding the ship's behavior lies in the holodeck.
00:20:40All of the connection nodes intersect at that location.
00:20:43It is clearly some kind of processing center.
00:20:45Processing center?
00:20:47Yes, sir. A focal point where all the ideas and instincts of this emerging intelligence are first expressed in some form.
00:20:55Almost like an imagination.
00:20:59Captain, I'd like to go to the holodeck.
00:21:01I could interact with the characters and maybe find some clues to help us understand what's happening.
00:21:07Very well.
00:21:08Mr. Data, Mr. Worf, I want you to go along.
00:21:10See if you can reestablish control of the ship without damaging the nodes.
00:21:15If the ship is truly an emerging intelligence, then we have a responsibility to treat it with the same respect as any other being.
00:21:40Welcome aboard, Counselor.
00:21:43If you will distract these people,
00:21:45I will attempt to depolarize the power grid.
00:21:53( bell clanging )
00:21:59Excuse me.
00:22:01Have you finished the puzzle yet?
00:22:03Not yet, but we're getting close.
00:22:07WORF: Do you recognize it?
00:22:10No.
00:22:24WORF: I would like to help.
00:22:26Tell me, what exactly are you making?
00:22:29What do you think we're making? A puzzle.
00:22:31No. No, I meant the picture.
00:22:34What is it?
00:22:36Well, I don't know.
00:22:41Can you deal me in?
00:22:42Sorry.
00:22:43It's a two-man game.
00:22:50Hey!
00:22:51Get your hand off of that.
00:22:55Is that why you killed the engineer?
00:22:57To get this brick?
00:22:58I had to get it back.
00:23:00You know what it's worth, lady?
00:23:02Plenty.
00:23:04And I got to get it to Keystone City.
00:23:06Why? What's at Keystone City?
00:23:08It's where everything begins.
00:23:12Gin.
00:23:21Are you succeeding, Commander?
00:23:23I am ready to access the main power grid.
00:23:25Keystone City, next stop.
00:23:28Keystone City.
00:23:30Well... look who's back.
00:23:34We do not want any trouble.
00:23:36We are simply... passengers.
00:23:38Well, then I'm sure you wouldn't mind showing me your tickets.
00:23:43Right.
00:23:45Sorry, boys.
00:23:47You're getting off right here.
00:23:53This is my stop.
00:23:54Wait. What happens at Keystone City?
00:23:56Why are you taking the brick there?
00:23:58Excuse me.
00:24:02I think we should follow that man.
00:24:04That brick might be an important clue.
00:24:40Where did he go?
00:24:43( electronic whirring )
00:24:47( beeping )
00:24:54I can access the power grid here.
00:25:03I will attempt to depolarize the grid by using a low-frequency inversion field.
00:25:08It may disengage the nodes without destroying them.
00:25:14TROI: There he is.
00:25:15I'm going after him.
00:25:28( car approaching )
00:25:53( dog barking )
00:26:18What are you doing here?
00:26:21Laying the foundation.
00:26:34Now if youse will excuse me,
00:26:36I got a train to catch.
00:26:49I don't understand it, Captain.
00:26:51All of a sudden, Cargo Bay Five started to depressurize.
00:26:53Did everyone get out in time?
00:26:54Yes, sir, and I've reestablished the containment field, but I'm reading massive power surges in the cargo bay and all sorts of transporter activity--
00:27:01Something weird is happening there, Captain.
00:27:03I want you to send a team down there immediately.
00:27:05Find out what's going on.
00:27:07Aye, sir.
00:27:34La Forge to Bridge.
00:27:35Picard here. What's going on?
00:27:39I wish I could tell you.
00:27:54That man said he was laying a foundation.
00:27:58A foundation for what?
00:28:01Troi to Data.
00:28:02Data here. How are you doing?
00:28:04I encountered a minor difficulty,
00:28:06Counselor, but it has been dealt with.
00:28:09( engine revving )
00:28:17I am ready to depolarize the power grid.
00:28:26It looks like the ship's replicator and transporter systems have been merged somehow to create this.
00:28:34The question is, what is it?
00:28:38Ensign, I want you to run a full spectral analysis on this...
00:28:42( rumbling )
00:28:46I'm reading massive power fluctuations.
00:28:49The ship is losing its structural integrity.
00:28:52What's happening?
00:28:56It's an earthquake.
00:29:04La Forge to Data. Stop what you're doing.
00:29:06Acknowledged.
00:29:13Are you all right?
00:29:15I'm fine.
00:29:19Data, I think we ought to get together and compare notes.
00:29:22DATA: Agreed.
00:29:29The ship was protecting itself again-- stopping us from interfering.
00:29:34Whatever it's doing, it intends to continue.
00:29:36I'm betting that all this has something to do with that object that's forming in the cargo bay.
00:29:40I think he's right, Captain.
00:29:42Look at the common themes playing out on the holodeck-- a puzzle being put together, a foundation being laid, a paper doll being fashioned.
00:29:51They're all images of something being constructed.
00:29:54LA FORGE: And some kind of object in the cargo bay that's being constructed atom by atom.
00:29:59What is that object?
00:30:00LA FORGE: I have no idea, but it's composed of silica polymers, duranium, and a couple of other compounds we haven't been able to identify yet.
00:30:07But creating it has had quite an effect on our systems.
00:30:10Warp power has dropped 47%.
00:30:12Counselor, did you draw any other conclusions from your experiences on the holodeck?
00:30:18Anything that would help us to understand this situation?
00:30:21The holodeck was full of metaphoric imagery, like it was having some kind of daydream.
00:30:28It may not make literal sense, but symbolically it probably does have some kind of logic to it.
00:30:33These characters you spoke to, do they have any significance?
00:30:38I think they represent different aspects of the ship.
00:30:42The engineer, for instance, may represent the navigational system.
00:30:46The gunslinger could be the weapon system.
00:30:50Is there any way that we can persuade them to give us back control of the ship?
00:30:54I don't think it's possible to reason with them.
00:30:57Many of them are genuinely unaware of what's going on.
00:31:01It's as though this emergent intelligence is like an infant-- acting on impulse, trying to figure itself out as it goes.
00:31:10The only source of experience it can draw on is ours, through our holodeck programs.
00:31:15Then, is there a way that we can relate to them on their own level?
00:31:18Find some way to influence their behavior?
00:31:24Maybe there is.
00:31:27I'd like to go back and try.
00:31:30Counselor, we haven't been able to reestablish the safeties.
00:31:33The injuries you suffered on the holodeck, weren't severe, but next time they might kill you.
00:31:40I'm aware of that.
00:31:45Very well, Counselor. Go ahead, but bear in mind that whenever we have tried to hinder their efforts, we've failed.
00:31:54Perhaps it's time to cooperate with them.
00:32:06You don't belong on this train.
00:32:10Three tickets for Vertiform City.
00:32:13Well...
00:32:15I guess I was wrong about you folks.
00:32:18Welcome aboard.
00:32:23What was that?
00:32:25We've been having some problems.
00:32:26The engine is running out of steam.
00:32:30I hope we make it to Vertiform City on time.
00:32:33Is there anything we can do to help?
00:32:35Well, I could use a pair of strong arms in the engine room.
00:32:39Might help us get back on schedule.
00:32:41Why don't you go with him, Worf?
00:32:43We'll see what we can do here.
00:32:51Excuse me, are we gonna get there okay?
00:32:54Of course. You needn't worry about a thing.
00:32:57So, tell me everything you know about Vertiform City.
00:33:01Well, they got this restaurant there where you can eat all you want, anytime.
00:33:06It's the best food around.
00:33:12There's the coal, and there's the boiler.
00:33:15I'm much obliged for your help.
00:33:32Well done, sir.
00:33:34I think this will make a big difference, all right.
00:33:45I don't know how or why, sir, but warp power appears to be back at normal levels.
00:33:50What's our heading?
00:33:52We appear to be on a course for Tambor Beta VI.
00:33:56It's a white dwarf star.
00:33:59Keep it steady.
00:34:01Put your back into it.
00:34:04That's the ticket!
00:34:16The ship is using a modified tractor beam to collect vertion particles from the star.
00:34:21Vertion particles...
00:34:24Vertiform City-- that's what the ship was looking for.
00:34:28( console beeping )
00:34:32The particles are being routed through the transporter system into Cargo Bay Five.
00:34:37Geordi, what's going on?
00:34:38The object is absorbing vertion particles.
00:34:41It's growing even faster than before.
00:34:44Commander...
00:34:46I'm picking up internal energy from this thing.
00:34:49What do you mean?
00:34:50I mean it's generating its own energy.
00:34:52I'm picking up coherent emissions, matter conversion... it's incredible.
00:34:58Wait a minute.
00:35:00Wait a minute. Something's wrong.
00:35:03We've got power fluctuations.
00:35:05Vertion absorption rate is dropping.
00:35:08What's happening with the particle beam?
00:35:11The beam's exhausted the supply of particles in the star-- there's nothing left to take out.
00:35:15Captain, the energy output of the object is decreasing.
00:35:19Something's wrong.
00:35:22What is it?
00:35:25This was supposed to be Vertiform City.
00:35:39We've been on the wrong track all along.
00:35:45( screaming )
00:35:59Are you all right?
00:36:00Yes. What happened?
00:36:02The conductor accidentally derailed the train.
00:36:05Data to Captain Picard.
00:36:07Picard here.
00:36:08There's been an accident in the holodeck, sir.
00:36:10Has anything happened on the Enterprise?
00:36:12Yes, we've had a ship-wide shutdown.
00:36:14We've lost attitude control, and most systems are offline.
00:36:17Captain, you'd better take a look at this.
00:36:22When the particle beam cut off, the object was was beginning to form a coherent energy matrix.
00:36:26Now, if these readings are accurate,
00:36:28I'd say that the emission patterns were almost organic.
00:36:31Are you suggesting that the Enterprise is trying to create a life-form?
00:36:34I think so.
00:36:36Will it survive?
00:36:37Well, its energy levels are dropping rapidly.
00:36:39Unless it gets an infusion of vertion particles-- and I mean soon-- I don't think so.
00:36:53Captain, all of our systems are back on line.
00:36:55We're moving again-- at warp nine.
00:36:59Let's get back to the Bridge.
00:37:06Whoo-ee.
00:37:07That was a close one, wasn't it?
00:37:09Where are we going now?
00:37:10Well, New Vertiform City, of course.
00:37:12Data to Captain. Picard here.
00:37:15The train has returned to normal, sir.
00:37:16Our destination is New Vertiform City.
00:37:19What's our course?
00:37:21We're headed for the Cordannas system.
00:37:23Another white dwarf star.
00:37:25It's the nearest one to our last position.
00:37:26LA FORGE: Captain... we have a problem.
00:37:32Even at warp nine, the Cordannas system is over 12 hours from here.
00:37:36Will the object in the cargo bay survive that long?
00:37:38Yes, sir, but that's not the problem.
00:37:40The ship has diverted all of our systems to maximum propulsion, including life support.
00:37:44We have less than two hours of reserve oxygen.
00:37:47Mr. Data, we have to stop the Enterprise.
00:37:50That means you have to get control of the train.
00:37:53DATA: Understood, sir.
00:37:54The ship is looking for vertion particles.
00:37:56And it believes that the Cordannas system is the closest source-- is there any possibility of anything closer?
00:38:01White dwarf stars are the only natural sources of vertion, sir.
00:38:05Then what about artificial ones?
00:38:06Can you create the particles?
00:38:10How did the conductor stop the train?
00:38:12There is a braking lever in the engine room.
00:38:14Let's go.
00:38:15Sorry, folks, but you ain't going nowhere.
00:38:23LA FORGE: I've narrowed the search down to the MacPherson nebula, which is a supernova remnant, and Dikon Alpha, which is a class-9 pulsar.
00:38:30They're both fairly close to our current flight path, and either one could produce vertion particles if we detonated a modified photon torpedo inside it.
00:38:37Vertions usually occur in minuscule amounts.
00:38:40Do you think either of these phenomena could produce enough of them?
00:38:42It's really hard to say, I can't even guarantee that we can create them at all.
00:38:46Well, we've got to give it a try.
00:38:48The nebula or the pulsar?
00:38:49It's your choice, Mr. La Forge.
00:38:52I say go with the nebula.
00:38:54Very well. Begin the torpedo modifications.
00:38:57Now let's see if we can get this ship to go where we want.
00:39:03Please, listen to me.
00:39:04We understand what's happening.
00:39:06We know you have to get to New Vertiform City, and we want to help you get there.
00:39:10Well, I don't know.
00:39:12Please.
00:39:14We're your friends.
00:39:15You really gonna help us get to New Vertiform City?
00:39:18I promise.
00:39:20Well, okay, but just one of you.
00:39:23The rest stay here.
00:39:34That's far enough.
00:39:36Sorry to spoil your party, pal.
00:39:37It's nothing personal.
00:39:39I can get us there more quickly.
00:39:40I know a shorter route.
00:39:41Don't listen to him. He's up to something.
00:39:44A shorter route?
00:39:45Yes, if you will let me handle the controls.
00:39:47Don't do it.
00:39:50Well... we're already behind schedule.
00:39:54If you can get us there on time... all right, go on, but no funny stuff.
00:40:00Data to Captain Picard.
00:40:02I have taken control of the engine room.
00:40:04Stand by.
00:40:06Are we within sensor range of the nebula?
00:40:08Yes, Captain, we are.
00:40:10Mr. Data, I need you to slow us to impulse speed.
00:40:14I will attempt to do so.
00:40:17I hope you know what you're doing.
00:40:38Are the modifications to the torpedoes complete?
00:40:41Aye, sir.
00:40:43Launch torpedo.
00:40:53It's working, Captain.
00:40:57The reaction is producing vertion particles.
00:41:03Well, what do you know?
00:41:05We're here!
00:41:06New Vertiform City!
00:41:08( laughing )
00:41:09( whistle blaring )
00:41:15The nodes are deactivating all over the ship.
00:41:17All our systems are beginning to function normally again.
00:41:20Then the purpose of the ship's intelligence was simply to bring this life-form into being.
00:41:25There are some species whose sole purpose is to reproduce.
00:41:28Once they finally procreate, they die.
00:41:31Captain...
00:42:05Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:42:07The Enterprise is back under our control.
00:42:10All traces of the emergent intelligence are gone,
00:42:12and the object it created has disappeared into space.
00:42:20( door chimes )
00:42:22Come.
00:42:26Captain, I am staging a scene from The Tempest this evening for a small audience.
00:42:31I would like for you to attend.
00:42:32I would be honored. What scene?
00:42:35Miranda's first encounter with other human beings.
00:42:41"O brave new world, that has such people in it."
00:42:46It seemed appropriate.
00:42:51Captain, you took a substantial risk in allowing the Enterprise to... complete its task.
00:42:58Why do you say that?
00:43:00Because the end result was unknown.
00:43:02The object could have been dangerous.
00:43:05It may, in fact, be dangerous.
00:43:07And I have allowed it to go off on its merry way.
00:43:10Yes, sir.
00:43:11The intelligence that was formed on the Enterprise didn't just come out of the ship's systems.
00:43:18It came from us, from our mission records, personal logs, holodeck programs... our fantasies.
00:43:25Now, if our experiences with the Enterprise have been honorable, can't we trust that the sum of those experiences will be the same?
