Preemptive Strike
00:00:01Captain's Log, Stardate 47941.7.
00:00:05The Enterprise is en route to a briefing on the situation
00:00:08in the Demilitarized Zone along the Cardassian border.
00:00:11Meanwhile, we are celebrating the return of an old friend.
00:00:19LA FORGE: Ro!
00:00:25Welcome home.
00:00:26Thanks. It's good to be back.
00:00:28Congratulations on your promotion, Lieutenant.
00:00:30Oh, and same to you, Commander.
00:00:32Thank you.
00:00:34Say, I understand that advanced tactical training is a real picnic.
00:00:37Right.
00:00:39Did you see the buffet?
00:00:40This is real Bajoran foraiga.
00:00:43It wasn't easy to get.
00:00:45You shouldn't have gone to all this trouble, really.
00:00:48CRUSHER: We wanted you to know how glad we are to have you back.
00:00:51TROI: So, um...
00:00:53Where are your new quarters?
00:00:55Uh, Deck Four, Section Eight.
00:00:57What are you planning to do...?
00:00:58PICARD: Lieutenant Ro.
00:01:00Go ahead, sir.
00:01:01Please report to the Bridge.
00:01:03Yes, sir.
00:01:04Excuse me.
00:01:12Captain.
00:01:16You seemed a bit overwhelmed by all the attention.
00:01:18Well, to tell you the truth
00:01:20I-I really want to see everyone.
00:01:22I would just rather do it one at a time.
00:01:29Well, you look very fit, Lieutenant.
00:01:30Tactical training seems to agree with you.
00:01:32Well, you know me.
00:01:34I enjoy a challenge.
00:01:36That school is more than a challenge.
00:01:37Half the class washes out every year.
00:01:39Although somehow
00:01:40I didn't think you would be one of those.
00:01:42Captain...
00:01:46I want you to know that I really appreciate your recommending me.
00:01:49If it weren't for you, my life would be a very different one right now.
00:01:56RIKER: Bridge to Picard.
00:01:58Go ahead.
00:01:59We're receiving a distress signal from a Cardassian ship near the Demilitarized Zone.
00:02:04Change course to intercept.
00:02:05I'm on my way.
00:02:07I, um... I'd like you at the conn, Lieutenant.
00:02:12( alarm wailing )
00:02:15Ensign Gates?
00:02:17Report.
00:02:19The Cardassian ship relayed a distress signal but it was cut off before we could find out what was wrong.
00:02:24I have the ship on long-range sensors.
00:02:26It appears to be under attack by several small ships.
00:02:28Can you identify them?
00:02:30Uh, no, sir.
00:02:31They're not transmitting identification codes.
00:02:32I will scan their warp signatures.
00:02:35Sir, sensors indicate the attacking vessels are Federation ships.
00:03:11Space, the final frontier.
00:03:16These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.
00:03:19Its continuing mission--
00:03:21to explore strange new worlds...
00:03:25to seek out new life and new civilizations...
00:03:30to boldly go where no one has gone before.
00:04:36We're coming into visual range.
00:04:38On screen.
00:04:42RIKER: Those are Federation ships.
00:04:45Isolate one and magnify.
00:04:49The Maquis.
00:04:52Open a channel.
00:04:53Open.
00:04:55To all Maquis ships, call off your attack or we will be forced to engage you.
00:05:01No response.
00:05:03You are Federation citizens.
00:05:05Your actions are in violation of our treaty with the Cardassians.
00:05:10Call off your attack.
00:05:13DATA: They are not responding, sir.
00:05:15Mr. Worf, are we in firing range?
00:05:17Not yet, sir.
00:05:19Arm phasers and photon torpedoes and stand by.
00:05:23I never thought we'd be firing on our own people to protect a Cardassian ship.
00:05:27The Maquis ships are regrouping, sir.
00:05:29They are closing in on the Cardassian vessel.
00:05:31The Cardassian shields are down to 30%.
00:05:34They may not be able to withstand another hit.
00:05:36Sir, we are within weapons range.
00:05:37Mr. Worf, can you detonate a torpedo spread
00:05:39between the Maquis ships and the Cardassians?
00:05:42Yes, sir.
00:05:43Do it.
00:05:49The Maquis are breaking formation.
00:05:53They are withdrawing.
00:05:55Signal the Cardassians that we're standing by to assist them if they have any wounded.
00:06:00Aye, sir.
00:06:07Do you people have experience treating Cardassians?
00:06:11Yes.
00:06:12Do you mind?
00:06:17PICARD: Gul Evek.
00:06:20I'm sorry that we could not come to your aid sooner.
00:06:23I suppose we're lucky you came at all.
00:06:25Lately, Starfleet seems to look the other way when the Maquis attack.
00:06:29I can assure you that is not the case.
00:06:30We are doing everything in our power to control them.
00:06:33The fact that my ship was attacked suggests your efforts have met with limited success.
00:06:38They came at us with photon torpedoes and type-8 phasers.
00:06:42Now, tell me, Captain.
00:06:44How do you suppose that a group of civilians acquired such weaponry?
00:06:48I can assure you that it was not through official channels.
00:06:51So, you don't think the fact that some of the Maquis are former Starfleet officers has anything to do with it?
00:07:01Starfleet does not condone the Maquis' actions in the Demilitarized Zone any more than your government would condone the paramilitary actions of Cardassian civilians.
00:07:11We have taken measures to deal with our colonists who have armed themselves.
00:07:16Considering that they destroyed a Juhrayan freighter less than a week ago, I would say that your efforts are meeting with limited success.
00:07:22Captain, if the Maquis are not stopped this situation will continue to escalate to the point where the Cardassian military will have no choice but to take matters into their own hands.
00:07:37Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:07:38Gul Evek and his crew have left the Enterprise
00:07:40and we have proceeded to our rendezvous
00:07:43with Admiral Nechayev.
00:07:52No Bularian canapés this time, Captain?
00:07:55I thought twice was pushing it a little.
00:07:57It's just as well.
00:07:59They're extremely fattening.
00:08:02You missed Gul Evek by a matter of hours.
00:08:05I asked him to stay.
00:08:07I thought that an admiral's assurances might convince him that we are trying to deal with this Maquis situation.
00:08:13Evek manages to make the Cardassians sound like helpless sheep being preyed on by Federation wolves.
00:08:19The truth is, we caught the Cardassian government supplying its colonies in the Demilitarized Zone with weapons.
00:08:26Now, Gul Evek assured me that they had stopped that practice.
00:08:29( rueful chuckle )
00:08:30How comforting.
00:08:32Admiral, this Maquis situation has you worried.
00:08:38Believe me, Captain if I were living that close to the Cardassians
00:08:43I'd keep a phaser under my pillow, too but in the last weeks, we've seen signs that the Maquis are moving beyond self-defense.
00:08:51Their ranks are growing.
00:08:53They're acquiring ships, weapons.
00:08:55They seem to be preparing for a more aggressive military posture.
00:09:01We've got to put a stop to them before the entire Demilitarized Zone ignites.
00:09:06But before we stop them we have to find them.
00:09:10They seem to be scattered in small cells around the Zone and we don't have reliable intelligence about any of them.
00:09:20Perhaps you need... an undercover operative.
00:09:24Our thinking exactly.
00:09:27We intend to infiltrate their organization and the person we want to do it is aboard your ship right now.
00:09:35Starfleet wants me to infiltrate the Maquis?
00:09:38Because of your recent training because you're Bajoran and... because of your past troubles with Starfleet.
00:09:47It gives you a certain credibility.
00:09:49Well, that's certainly true.
00:09:51And just how soon would this mission begin?
00:09:54Immediately.
00:09:57I see.
00:10:00( sighs )
00:10:05I've spent the better part of my life fighting the Cardassians.
00:10:08I never thought I'd be helping them out.
00:10:12Well, this is a rare case when our interests and theirs coincide.
00:10:16We both want peace in the Demilitarized Zone.
00:10:20I've heard a lot about the Maquis.
00:10:22One of my instructors at tactical training a Lieutenant Commander in Starfleet-- a man I both admired and respected-- he was sympathetic to them.
00:10:33He resigned and left to join them.
00:10:36We're all sympathetic, Lieutenant.
00:10:39Our civilian population in the Demilitarized Zone is in a very difficult situation but even sympathy has to end at some point.
00:10:46A peace treaty isn't just a piece of paper.
00:10:48If the Maquis force us into a war with Cardassia it could mean hundreds of thousands of lives.
00:10:54Two years ago
00:10:56Starfleet would never have tapped you for this mission.
00:10:59They must have a lot of confidence in you now.
00:11:03The way I see it there's one good reason to take this mission and that's to validate your faith in me.
00:11:20( buzz of conversation )
00:12:00( conversation dies down )
00:12:10We are looking for a Bajoran woman.
00:12:13Dark hair.
00:12:15She is responsible for the death of a Cardassian soldier.
00:12:18( scattered laughter )
00:12:20If we learn she has been here this establishment will be closed down.
00:12:24You say she has dark hair?
00:12:27Yes.
00:12:29She was here.
00:12:31You just missed her.
00:12:32Do you know where she went?
00:12:34No.
00:12:43( door closes )
00:12:44( conversation resumes )
00:12:45Hey...
00:12:47It was really nice meeting you.
00:12:48Oh...
00:13:05Thanks.
00:13:16So... did you kill that Cardassian?
00:13:22Starfleet thinks I did.
00:13:23That's reason enough to hide.
00:13:26Why did you tell them that I'd left?
00:13:28There are worse things a person can do than kill a Cardassian soldier.
00:13:34You don't often meet someone willing to say that out loud.
00:13:38In the Zone, there are a lot of us who feel that way.
00:13:41I'd like to meet people like that.
00:13:45( gasps )
00:14:04Don't be afraid.
00:14:06You're not in danger here.
00:14:12What is your name?
00:14:13Did you kill that Cardassian soldier?
00:14:15Who are you?
00:14:17We're the people who saved you from Starfleet.
00:14:22Thanks, but I'll be going now.
00:14:30Did you kill that Cardassian?
00:14:34Yes.
00:14:37That's a risky thing to do in the Demilitarized Zone.
00:14:40You can end up being hunted by Starfleet and the Cardassians.
00:14:44Then why did he risk bringing me here?
00:14:47We're asking the questions.
00:14:48Who are you?
00:14:51My name is Ro Laren.
00:14:54I grew up in the Bajoran camps.
00:14:56Well, that would explain why you have no love for Cardassians.
00:15:00I know what they're capable of.
00:15:02They tortured my father to death and I was forced to watch.
00:15:06Where are you living now?
00:15:09RO: Nowhere.
00:15:11I was a Starfleet officer, but I was court-martialed and I was sent to the stockade on Jaros II.
00:15:18I'm not exactly what you'd call Starfleet material.
00:15:21When were you on Jaros?
00:15:23What difference does it make?
00:15:25We want to check your story.
00:15:27When were you there?
00:15:28Starfleet let me out about three years ago because I agreed to do some work for them-- mostly having to do with Bajor.
00:15:35But I got tired of watching them placate the Cardassians, and so I left.
00:15:40You resigned?
00:15:42Not officially.
00:15:45That's part of the reason why they're looking for me.
00:15:47What were you doing on Ronara?
00:15:49Look, I think I've answered enough of your questions.
00:15:52I would like to know who you people are.
00:15:55Let's say that we sympathize with those who oppose Cardassia.
00:15:59Are you Maquis?
00:16:01What if we were?
00:16:03If you were, I would ask if I could join you and help you fight.
00:16:10We'll check your story.
00:16:12Go ahead. I'll keep an eye on her.
00:16:28Come.
00:16:30Let's stretch our legs.
00:16:52Aren't you taking a chance by letting me see all of this?
00:16:55What if my story doesn't check out?
00:16:58What if I'm not who I say I am?
00:17:00Well, then we'll have a problem, won't we?
00:17:07You are Maquis, aren't you?
00:17:09Many of the people here are.
00:17:12Starfleet considers you outlaws.
00:17:15( chuckling )
00:17:17They're afraid you'll destroy the peace treaty.
00:17:20They don't understand the situation here in the Zone.
00:17:23I lived on Juhraya.
00:17:26When the treaty was signed the colony suddenly found itself in Cardassian territory.
00:17:32Some of us chose to stay, take our chances.
00:17:38Then one night, I was dragged from my bed and beaten.
00:17:44The authorities clucked their tongues and agreed it was an unfortunate incident... and did nothing.
00:17:52I'm not surprised.
00:17:53The Cardassians intend to make life so unpleasant for Federation citizens that they'll leave.
00:18:00Exactly.
00:18:01And no one seems to see that!
00:18:05Except... the Maquis.
00:18:18How old were you when your father was killed?
00:18:22I'd rather not talk about that.
00:18:27You hungry?
00:18:28Would you like something?
00:18:31No. Thank you.
00:18:42Hasperat.
00:18:48You like hasperat?
00:18:51Uh, an old Bajoran friend of mine used to make it although his was stronger.
00:18:59He was killed many years ago fighting the Cardassian occupation of Bajor.
00:19:09I miss his company.
00:19:10And his hasperat.
00:19:15My father used to make the strongest hasperat you've ever tasted.
00:19:19Everything else seems mild by comparison.
00:19:22Did he teach you how to make it?
00:19:24Yes, but I haven't... I haven't tried it in years.
00:19:28If you would make the brine for a really strong hasperat--
00:19:32I mean, um, eye-watering, tongue-searing strong-- you'd make an old man very happy.
00:19:39I would enjoy making it again.
00:19:41MAN: Macias.
00:19:46I've checked with my sources at Starfleet.
00:19:48Her story's true.
00:19:50I was sure it was.
00:19:52Kalita, she'll stay with you until we can find her a room.
00:20:10Ah, there you are.
00:20:17We've just heard a disturbing rumor.
00:20:20Another rumor.
00:20:22One that I think we should take seriously.
00:20:25A trader coming from Pendi II said he could verify that the Cardassians are going to start supplying their colonists with biogenic weapons.
00:20:33I thought every shipment coming into the Zone was searched.
00:20:37The Cardassians always seem to find a way around problems like that.
00:20:41Then we have to make a preemptive strike.
00:20:44Send a message to the Cardassians that we won't sit still while they kill us with toxins.
00:20:48Agreed.
00:20:50But we can't mount a strike without medical supplies and our stockpile is dangerously low.
00:20:55If we put in a request for more, it'll draw suspicion.
00:20:59I can get medical supplies.
00:21:00I served on the Enterprise.
00:21:02They always have extra medkits on hand for relief missions.
00:21:05But you're wanted by Starfleet.
00:21:06They're not going to give you medkits just because you ask for them.
00:21:10I have no intention of asking for them.
00:21:12I intend to take them.
00:21:13How?
00:21:15The Enterprise is a fortress.
00:21:17I know its security systems.
00:21:21Give me a ship.
00:21:22I can do this.
00:21:24This is madness.
00:21:26We can't let her do something like this.
00:21:28We don't know anything about her.
00:21:29I know, but she can make very strong hasperat.
00:21:34What?
00:21:35We need medical supplies.
00:21:40I think... we should let her try.
00:21:47All right, but I'm going with her.
00:21:51I could use an extra hand at the controls.
00:21:54And a witness.
00:22:07I've set the transporter confinement parameters to maximum.
00:22:10We should be able to fill our hold with medical supplies with just one single beam-out.
00:22:15I had no idea it was going to be so easy.
00:22:18We're approaching the Federation border.
00:22:20How do you plan to get out of the Demilitarized Zone without being searched at one of the checkpoints?
00:22:25We're going to cross the border here.
00:22:28There are sensor buoys all along the border.
00:22:30If we cross anywhere other than a checkpoint
00:22:33Starfleet will send a ship to investigate.
00:22:35With the right security codes we can disable the proximity detectors on the buoys.
00:22:40Starfleet changes those codes all the time.
00:22:43I know the encryption algorithms.
00:22:45If I can access the buoys' protocol subsystem
00:22:47I should be able to figure out the codes.
00:22:50Should be able to?
00:22:53Do you want this mission to succeed?
00:22:56Of course I do.
00:22:57We need those medical supplies.
00:22:59In that case let me do my job.
00:23:02( beeping )
00:23:04I'm in.
00:23:07( strident beeping )
00:23:10What's wrong?
00:23:11If I don't input the right code in the next 20 seconds we'll trigger the proximity alarm.
00:23:16I'm getting us out of sensor range.
00:23:17Don't. If we break the com-link we won't be able to try again.
00:23:21( beeping )
00:23:23( sighing )
00:23:25It worked.
00:23:27Until they change the access codes again we can cross the border here.
00:23:32Captain's Log, Stardate 47943.2.
00:23:36It has been over a week
00:23:38since Lieutenant Ro left the Enterprise.
00:23:41We have yet to receive any communication from her.
00:23:45We picked up a request for emergency assistance from a Federation science ship in the Topin system.
00:23:49Are there any other ships in the vicinity?
00:23:51We're the closest.
00:23:53Helm, set a course for the Topin system.
00:23:55Mr. Data, will you signal the science ship that we're on our way?
00:23:59It is unlikely they would receive our communication, sir.
00:24:02The Topin system contains an unstable protostar.
00:24:04It generates significant magnetascopic interference.
00:24:07Can we use our sensors to find them?
00:24:09Most of our sensors would be ineffective although our directional array should cut through the interference.
00:24:16That array has such a narrow scan field.
00:24:18We might as well break out the palm beacons and try to find them that way.
00:24:26This is insane.
00:24:28We're sitting here-- no sensors, blind to the outside-- waiting for a Galaxy-class starship to come swooping down on us.
00:24:36Don't worry.
00:24:37It'll be hard for them to locate us with just their directional sensors.
00:24:41Besides, they're looking for a damaged science ship that wants to be found.
00:24:45( beeping )
00:24:47They're here.
00:24:48Stand by to engage thrusters.
00:24:52RIKER: Anything?
00:24:53No, sir, it will take approximately six hours to scan the system.
00:24:56Captain, the distress call is being repeated.
00:25:01Data, can you locate the signal?
00:25:03I am attempting to do so.
00:25:05They're scanning our last position.
00:25:07All right, I've locked onto their sensor beam.
00:25:10I'm going to use it to maneuver into transporter range.
00:25:12How are we going to beam through their shields?
00:25:14We can't.
00:25:16If we're going to get those medical supplies we're going to have to take this ship through their shields.
00:25:23Sir, I am scanning the area from which the distress signal was sent, but I'm unable to detect a vessel.
00:25:30Captain, the computer has detected a piggyback communication on the last distress signal.
00:25:35Can you decode it?
00:25:37It will take a few moments.
00:25:38Do it.
00:25:40The Enterprise shields have a weak point.
00:25:42When the ship is at impulse, the thrust destabilizes the shield configuration right at this point.
00:25:47I'm going to try to punch through there.
00:25:49Won't they detect us?
00:25:51They'll know something's penetrated the shields but, with all the interference it'll take them a few seconds to find us.
00:25:56We'll have to beam the medical supplies aboard and get out fast.
00:26:00The message is difficult to decode.
00:26:02Interference has garbled much of the transmission but it seems to be coming from Lieutenant Ro.
00:26:11Ro is on that ship.
00:26:13DATA: Sir a vessel of some kind is attempting to penetrate our aft shields.
00:26:20Let it through.
00:26:26We're going to make it.
00:26:34All right, we're in.
00:26:35Energizing.
00:26:46Let's get out of here.
00:26:49Captain, a quantity of medical supplies was beamed from Cargo Bay Seven.
00:26:53The vessel that penetrated our shields is of the same design as the ships used by the Maquis.
00:26:59It is moving off.
00:27:01Let it go.
00:27:02There must be someone with her.
00:27:04We should make it look as though we're trying to stop them.
00:27:08Mr. Worf, lock phasers on their previous position and fire.
00:27:13Aye, sir.
00:27:15Now we know what they mean by advanced tactical training.
00:27:24You took your ship through their shields?
00:27:26Ro parked us between their warp nacelles.
00:27:29I thought she was crazy, but it worked.
00:27:31She knew exactly what she was doing.
00:27:33Well done.
00:27:34We'll have to inventory supplies and find out what we have.
00:27:39See you later.
00:27:44Well, it seems Kalita has decided that you're not a Federation spy after all.
00:27:48( chuckles )
00:27:50She's suspicious of everyone at first and rightly so.
00:27:54We've learned to be cautious of strangers.
00:27:57No, I understand.
00:27:59But I've known since I first met you that, in your heart, you're one of us.
00:28:11Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:28:13Having earned the Maquis' trust
00:28:15with her raid on the Enterprise
00:28:16Lieutenant Ro has been given access to a ship
00:28:19and allowed to leave the settlement by herself.
00:28:22There are rumors that the Cardassians are supplying their colonists with biogenic weapons.
00:28:27Frankly, I find that hard to believe.
00:28:29Every ship that enters the Demilitarized Zone is being searched.
00:28:32Well, the Maquis are convinced that the Cardassians are finding a way around these searches.
00:28:36You know, we could make use of that.
00:28:38Sir?
00:28:41We have come up with a plan that has the potential to seriously curtail the Maquis.
00:28:47We want to give them a target so threatening to them that they'll be willing to commit as many ships and people as possible in order to destroy it.
00:28:57What do you mean, "give them a target"?
00:28:58Well, biogenic weapons, for example.
00:29:02You could provide them with intelligence which would show that the Cardassians
00:29:08are in fact supplying their colonists with them.
00:29:11That would get their attention, all right.
00:29:13You could tell them that in order to get past the checkpoints they're shipping the components for these weapons through third parties and then, we could put together a convoy and send it towards the Demilitarized Zone.
00:29:28And when the Maquis attack it
00:29:31Starfleet would be waiting for them.
00:29:33We could station our ships in the Hugora Nebula to avoid detection.
00:29:38Basically, I would be leading them into a trap.
00:29:41That's right.
00:29:44If you have a problem with any of this
00:29:47I need to know it now.
00:29:51Well, if I do, sir it will not stop me from carrying out my duty.
00:29:57I knew that I could count on you.
00:30:06It took me a while, but I managed to patch through into Starfleet's comsystem.
00:30:10I intercepted communication from one of the checkpoints along the border.
00:30:13They're concerned because a Pakled transport came through carrying retroviral vaccines.
00:30:18Why is that a concern?
00:30:21Well, last week, a Ferengi transport came through carrying biomimetic gels.
00:30:26By themselves, neither of these is dangerous
00:30:28but Starfleet is concerned because, along with other components the Cardassians could put together a biogenic device.
00:30:36Well, what is Starfleet going to do about it?
00:30:38They can't do anything about it.
00:30:40These items are all perfectly legal.
00:30:42How close are the Cardassians to having the components they need?
00:30:46Very close.
00:30:47Two days ago, a Yridian convoy left Deep Space 9 for the Demilitarized Zone.
00:30:53It's carrying isomiotic hypos plasma flares and quarantine pods.
00:30:58We can't let that convoy reach its destination.
00:31:00But it's too big for us to go after alone.
00:31:04I'll discuss the situation with the other cell leaders.
00:31:08Considering what's at stake they'll want to help.
00:31:32I've sent a communication to the others.
00:31:39When this is over, we'll celebrate.
00:31:42When it's over?
00:31:44When Cardassia realizes they can't intimidate us into leaving our colonies.
00:31:49Something tells me it'll be a long time before we're celebrating.
00:31:54Don't be discouraged, Ro.
00:31:57It'll take time but the important thing is that we not give up.
00:32:03I spent ten years in the camps.
00:32:05I don't give up.
00:32:09I've been thinking a long time about what our celebration will be like.
00:32:14We'll have a huge dinner.
00:32:16You'll make hasperat and I'll make blueberry pie.
00:32:21We'll drink wine and we'll dance.
00:32:25I'll even play the belaklavion.
00:32:27That'll give everyone a laugh.
00:32:30You play the klavion?
00:32:32Yes. Badly.
00:32:35It's a difficult instrument but I enjoy the challenge.
00:32:39My father played the klavion.
00:32:43When I was very young and afraid of monsters under my bed... he'd play for me.
00:32:56He said that the klavion had special powers.
00:33:02Monsters were afraid of it and when they heard it they would disappear.
00:33:11When I listened to that music he played for me...
00:33:17I was never afraid to go to sleep.
00:33:25When he died...
00:33:31I realized even he couldn't make all the monsters go away.
00:33:41Why wait?
00:33:43Let's go to the market.
00:33:45Let's get food for a feast.
00:33:47For a celebration.
00:33:49A celebration of what?
00:33:52Of absolutely nothing.
00:33:56Just to celebrate.
00:33:58I'd like that.
00:34:01Come, let's go to the market.
00:34:04If I'm to make a pie we'll have to find a substitute for blueberries.
00:34:09I haven't seen real ones in years.
00:34:11On Bajor, there's a berry called teakle.
00:34:14Yes, I know-- very sweet.
00:34:32( people yelling and screaming )
00:34:41Ro!
00:35:15( grunts )
00:35:20( yells )
00:35:22Macias!
00:35:24( groans )
00:35:28( breathing heavily )
00:35:30They must have discovered that there was a Maquis cell here.
00:35:34Kalita, get one of the medkits. Hurry!
00:35:38( breathing heavily )
00:35:41You have to hang on.
00:35:44When an old fighter like me dies... someone always steps forward to take his place.
00:36:29Mmm...
00:36:30Not tonight.
00:36:35Hello.
00:36:36Are you alone?
00:36:38I hope not.
00:36:40Why don't we get acquainted?
00:36:42There's a table in the back that's more private.
00:36:45I'd like that.
00:36:59We have to cancel the mission.
00:37:02Why?
00:37:03Well, the Maquis didn't go for the bait.
00:37:06They think the convoy is... too big a target.
00:37:10There are only six ships.
00:37:12We could even cut back that number.
00:37:15It's the commitment of resources of grouping so many of the Maquis together at once.
00:37:21They feel that it makes them too vulnerable.
00:37:26Every intelligence report that I get from Starfleet suggests that the Maquis are eager to expand their strikes.
00:37:33They want to escalate their activities.
00:37:35Now you're telling me this isn't true?
00:37:39It's probably different in every cell.
00:37:42The people I've met tend to be... more conservative.
00:37:46I'm sure others have a more militant attitude.
00:37:52Laren, what's going on?
00:37:56Do you have the money I asked you to bring?
00:37:59Yes.
00:38:00Put some on the table.
00:38:02What?
00:38:04By this time, you should be negotiating my price.
00:38:16When you sent me on this mission...
00:38:21I thought that I could do it.
00:38:24Even though it meant helping the Cardassians.
00:38:26Even though it meant betraying people who were fighting against them.
00:38:32Now I'm not sure where I stand.
00:38:35Are you saying that you want to back out of this mission?
00:38:41Sir, I don't want to let you down.
00:38:42I swear that I don't.
00:38:43This has nothing to do with me.
00:38:45This is about you.
00:38:47If you back out now you'll throw away everything you've worked for.
00:38:58We're committed to this mission.
00:39:00My only question for you is:
00:39:04Can you carry out your orders?
00:39:10I could put you before a Board of Inquiry for having lied to me about this operation.
00:39:17I would certainly have you court-martialed if you sabotage it.
00:39:21Now, it's your decision.
00:39:28I'll carry out my orders, sir.
00:39:34I feel it necessary to have... have Commander Riker go back with you.
00:39:38He can... pose as... a relative.
00:39:42I just want to make sure that... nothing happens to obstruct this mission.
00:39:50Sorry. I don't have that kind of money.
00:40:01Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:40:02We have received word
00:40:04from Commander Riker and Lieutenant Ro
00:40:06that the Maquis will be attacking the convoy
00:40:08as planned.
00:40:09Our ships have taken up position
00:40:11in the Hugora Nebula to wait for them.
00:40:13I have established a relay link with the sensor probe we left on the perimeter of the nebula.
00:40:19This is the convoy.
00:40:20We are expecting the Maquis attack force to cross the border from the Demilitarized Zone.
00:40:24As soon as they cross the border, we'll intercept them.
00:40:26Captain, in order to ensure that the ship Commander Riker and Lieutenant Ro are piloting does not come under fire
00:40:31I have relayed their warp signature to the rest of the attack force.
00:40:35Sir, the Maquis squadron is coming into sensor range.
00:40:39Go to red alert.
00:40:41Aye, sir.
00:40:47MAN: Squad leader to all ships.
00:40:49Go ahead, squad leader.
00:40:51We'll be crossing the border in less than one minute.
00:40:54Arm your weapons.
00:40:55RO: Acknowledged.
00:40:57Starfleet can't make its move until we're out of the Demilitarized Zone.
00:41:01We're to break formation and take cover in the nebula as soon as they appear.
00:41:06The ships in the convoy are raising their shields.
00:41:08They've spotted us.
00:41:10We cross the border in 30 seconds.
00:41:15What the...?
00:41:20I'm sorry.
00:41:22I can't let this happen.
00:41:26Sir, the vessel being piloted by Lieutenant Ro is firing a low-intensity particle beam into the nebula.
00:41:32What the hell is she doing?
00:41:33The polarizing effect being created by the beam may make it possible for us to be detected.
00:41:38Can you counter the effect?
00:41:40I will attempt to do so.
00:41:42Ro, why are you firing?
00:41:44Scan the nebula.
00:41:45There's a Starfleet attack force hiding inside it.
00:41:48I see it.
00:41:51Squad leader to all ships.
00:41:52Abort the mission.
00:41:54Repeat-- abort the mission.
00:41:56Sir, the Maquis ships are breaking formation.
00:41:59PICARD: Have they crossed the border?
00:42:00DATA: No, sir. They are withdrawing.
00:42:03WORF: Captain.
00:42:04( console beeping )
00:42:06Lieutenant Ro's ship is not retreating with the others.
00:42:10It is heading towards us.
00:42:13When she comes aboard... take her into custody.
00:42:20Alpha Seven to Alpha Nine.
00:42:22KALITA: Go ahead.
00:42:23Stand by to beam me aboard.
00:42:25Standing by.
00:42:28You can take this ship back to the Enterprise.
00:42:30You're going with them?
00:42:33It's been a long time since I really felt like I belonged somewhere.
00:42:45Could you tell Captain Picard something for me?
00:42:49Of course. What is it?
00:42:51Tell him I'm sorry.
00:42:56So long, Ro.
00:42:58Take care of yourself.
00:43:01Good-bye, Will.
00:43:06Energize.
00:43:20She seemed very sure that she was doing the right thing.
00:43:26I think her only regret was that she let you down.
00:43:34Here's my report.
