Deadlock
00:00:02Good afternoon, Ensign.
00:00:04How are we doing today?
00:00:06We're doing just fine, thank you.
00:00:08Good, good.
00:00:10By the way, I was wondering if you'd take a look at the thermal array in the kitchen.
00:00:15It overloaded this morning and vaporized an entire pot roast.
00:00:19I'd be happy to. Wonderful.
00:00:23I informed Ensign Kim about the problem hours ago and he still hasn't come down to fix it.
00:00:27He's been working on a problem with the structural integrity grid.
00:00:30I'm sure he hasn't forgotten about you.
00:00:34If this thing doesn't get fixed soon we'll all be eating cold leftovers for dinner, and who do you think the crew will blame?
00:00:40Looks like you need a new set of anodyne relays.
00:00:43( grunts )
00:00:44I'll go down to Engineering and get some for you out of storage. Thanks.
00:00:48Oh, and while you're here, would you mind taking a look at the replicator?
00:00:53It's been having trouble making anything with large amounts of cellulose. Of course.
00:00:58Cabbage, syllium, green beans, celery-- it all comes out looking a touch too yellow.
00:01:04I thought you didn't use replicated vegetables when you're cooking.
00:01:07Always fresh, organic, from the aeroponic bay?
00:01:10Well, the yields have been a little low lately.
00:01:14Normally, I would never dream of using synthesized veggies.
00:01:18It looks like a malfunction in the power grid.
00:01:21Shouldn't be too difficult...
00:01:23( gasping )
00:01:25What's wrong?
00:01:27I think I'm having a contraction.
00:01:30Oh, yeah. It's a contraction, all right.
00:01:33That's wonderful.
00:01:34Labor can't be far behind.
00:01:36Let-Let's get you to Sickbay.
00:01:39Try to breathe now.
00:01:40Deep, deep, regular breaths. Not so fast now.
00:01:44We're having a baby.
00:01:45Aw!
00:01:48Push!
00:01:49( gasping )
00:01:52Don't forget to breathe, Samantha.
00:01:54Deep, regular breaths.
00:01:56That's it.
00:01:59Cervical dilation is at 10.2 centimeters.
00:02:02Prostaglandin levels are normal.
00:02:04Push, Ensign!
00:02:05You push, damn it!
00:02:06I'm sick of pushing!
00:02:08I know you're fatigued.
00:02:10Try to focus on your breathing.
00:02:11Remember the exercises we did.
00:02:13When you feel a contraction, bear down.
00:02:34( sighs )
00:02:35This is ridiculous.
00:02:36It's been seven hours.
00:02:38How long does it take to deliver a baby?
00:02:40As long as it takes, Mr. Paris.
00:02:42TUVOK: Indeed.
00:02:44During the birth of our third child, my wife was in labor for 96 hours.
00:02:48Four days?
00:02:50I have learned that pregnancy and patience go hand-in-hand.
00:02:54You know, I didn't expect to be this nervous.
00:02:56It's not even my child.
00:02:58In a way, this child belongs to all of us.
00:03:02It is the first baby born on Voyager.
00:03:04I'm just not sure whether
00:03:05I should be welcoming it on board or apologizing.
00:03:08Captain?
00:03:10Voyager isn't exactly anyone's idea of a nursery and the Delta Quadrant isn't much of a playground.
00:03:16My father had a saying, Captain.
00:03:18"Home is wherever you happen to be."
00:03:21TUVOK: Captain, long range sensors are picking up heavy subspace communications ahead.
00:03:26They're Vidiian.
00:03:27All stop. A ship?
00:03:28At least 20 ships within sensor range.
00:03:31I am also detecting a G-type star system with two inhabited planets.
00:03:35Lifesigns... Vidiian.
00:03:37Sounds like we're headed right into their territory.
00:03:39And I'm in no mood to donate any organs today.
00:03:41Options, Mr. Paris.
00:03:44There's a large plasma drift, bearing 4-0 mark 7.
00:03:48It extends almost half the length of this sector.
00:03:51The interference from the plasma should block us from their sensors.
00:03:54Good thinking. Lay in a course at full impulse.
00:03:56Mr. Tuvok, deflectors at maximum.
00:04:07( gasping )
00:04:09( straining )
00:04:12Oh!
00:04:13Oh, what was that?
00:04:15What's wrong?
00:04:16A pain... in my abdomen.
00:04:19It's different... sharp.
00:04:21Oh, God!
00:04:23The baby has shifted position, and its exocranial ridges have lodged in the uterine wall.
00:04:27This is a rare complication, but it's been known to happen in human-Ktarian pregnancies.
00:04:32Can we reposition the baby?
00:04:33No, its spinal column is too fragile.
00:04:35I don't want to risk nerve damage.
00:04:36( groaning )
00:04:38If we don't deliver the baby now, its ridges could perforate the uterus and cause internal bleeding.
00:04:43Kes, prepare for fetal transport.
00:04:48We're clearing the Vidiian system, Captain.
00:04:50Take us out of the plasma drift and resume our previous course.
00:04:54DR. ZIMMERMAN: I've locked onto the baby's coordinates.
00:04:57We're ready to begin.
00:04:58Initiating umbilical separation.
00:05:01Energizing.
00:05:07( crying )
00:05:09( exhales )
00:05:11Congratulations, Ensign.
00:05:14It's a girl.
00:05:16( crying loudly )
00:05:22Is she all right?
00:05:25The transport caused a slight hemocythemic imbalance, but we'll stabilize her cell membranes with osmotic pressure therapy.
00:05:33( rumbling )
00:05:34What was that?
00:05:36We hit some kind of subspace turbulence as we were coming out of the plasma drift.
00:05:40I can't tell if...
00:05:43What the hell?
00:05:45Captain, the warp engines just stalled.
00:05:47Go to impulse.
00:05:49Impulse engines aren't responding.
00:05:51Maneuvering thrusters are out too.
00:05:53We're losing main power.
00:05:55Switching to backup power.
00:05:56Red Alert. Bridge to Engineering.
00:05:58Report!
00:05:59Our antimatter supply is being drained, Captain.
00:06:01I don't know why.
00:06:02The containment fields are in place.
00:06:04It's like we sprung a leak, but I can't find the crack.
00:06:06B'Elanna, try infusing the warp core with repeated proton bursts.
00:06:10That should be enough to keep it going.
00:06:11I think I can generate enough protons in the sensor array for a burst every 30 seconds. Do it.
00:06:17Hogan, these proton bursts are going to cause a lot of stress on the hull.
00:06:20Reinforce structural integrity to...
00:06:22( low booming )
00:06:24Now what?
00:06:29What was that?
00:06:30It appeared to be a proton burst.
00:06:32Already?
00:06:33Bridge to Torres, report.
00:06:36Engineering, respond.
00:06:38Captain, three E.P.S. conduits just ruptured in Engineering.
00:06:41They took heavy casualties.
00:06:47The incubator is losing power. ( baby crying )
00:06:49Activate the auxiliary respirator.
00:06:55We've got wounded here! ( people groaning )
00:07:03( dramatic theme music playing )
00:08:49Second-degree plasma burns on the face and neck.
00:08:52Treat him with the dermaline gel.
00:08:54Fractured clavicle, thoracic contusions.
00:08:56Nothing serious, she can wait.
00:08:59Fused vertebrae, prep him for surgery.
00:09:01Status. It doesn't look good, Doctor.
00:09:03The baby's cell membranes won't stabilize.
00:09:05Increase the osmotic...
00:09:06( low booming )
00:09:09That's not helping.
00:09:11Increase the osmotic pressure ratio by 10%.
00:09:13KIM: Bridge to Sick Bay.
00:09:15There's been a major coolant leak in the mess hall.
00:09:17You've got more wounded on the way.
00:09:19Acknowledged.
00:09:22Torres to Bridge!
00:09:23We're definitely...
00:09:24( grunts )
00:09:26We're definitely being hit by proton bursts, but I don't know where they're coming from.
00:09:30I never even started the procedure.
00:09:33She's right. The main sensor array is off-line.
00:09:35Not a single burst was fired.
00:09:37Yet the bursts appear to be originating from within the ship-- it's like they're coming out of thin air.
00:09:41Captain, these bursts are weakening the structural integrity of the hull; we cannot take any more.
00:09:45Can we increase power to structural reinforcement?
00:09:48KIM: Our antimatter supply is too low.
00:09:50There's just not enough power to go...
00:09:54Hull breach on Deck 15, Section 29 Alpha.
00:09:57Emergency force fields are off-line.
00:09:58Captain, I've been working on a way to enhance our portable force field generators.
00:10:02It might be enough to seal that breach.
00:10:03Go.
00:10:09NEELIX: Don't you worry.
00:10:10We have the best doctor in the quadrant.
00:10:13Doctor, her cell membranes are losing cohesion.
00:10:15Try remodulating the osmotic pressure.
00:10:21No effect.
00:10:23Hang on, I'll be right there.
00:10:34Oh, no.
00:10:36Jefferies Tube 12 runs right over the breach.
00:10:38If we can get close enough, we should be able to set up a portable containment field.
00:10:41The breach has weakened the integrity of that tube by 22%.
00:10:44That's why we need to reinforce the field.
00:10:45We'll use the power conduits on this deck.
00:10:48( grunting )
00:10:51Go!
00:10:53I've analyzed the bursts on all spectral frequencies.
00:10:55There's still no indication of where they're coming from.
00:10:57At this point, I don't give a damn where they're coming from.
00:10:59I just want to stop them.
00:11:01Chakotay, do we have enough auxiliary power to magnetize the hull?
00:11:04It might cushion the impact of the bursts.
00:11:06We have just barely enough.
00:11:07Give it a try.
00:11:09I've stabilized my imaging array but it could go out at any time. Doctor...
00:11:12Prepare for emergency resuscitation.
00:11:14My baby, she...
00:11:15She's going to die, isn't she?
00:11:18Not if I can help it.
00:11:25Here it is. The breach is directly below us.
00:11:31Make it fast, Harry.
00:11:34Torres to Hogan. What's your status?
00:11:36Almost got it, Lieutenant.
00:11:38I'm rerouting all power in this section to your...
00:11:40( low booming )
00:11:42( screams )
00:11:46Torres to Hogan.
00:11:49Hogan, are you there?
00:11:50Ugh, I'm hurt...
00:11:52Hurry, we have to help him.
00:11:53Just give me a minute.
00:11:56( machine beeping )
00:11:58DR. ZIMMERMAN: Again! ( monitor flatlining )
00:12:01Nothing.
00:12:10I'm sorry, Ensign.
00:12:16( crying )
00:12:18( groans )
00:12:19Hogan to Sick Bay.
00:12:21I need... medical assistance.
00:12:24Deck 15, Section 29.
00:12:26I'll go. ( sobbing )
00:12:32The breach is widening. Let's get out of here.
00:12:37Damn it, Harry, let's go!
00:12:38Hold on.
00:12:39My minute isn't up yet...
00:12:40Agh!
00:12:47Harry!
00:12:48Grab my hand!
00:12:58Harry!
00:13:05( gasping )
00:13:07KES: Lieutenant Hogan!
00:13:09TORRES: Kes, over here!
00:13:22Torres to Bridge.
00:13:23Ensign Kim is dead.
00:13:24Kes just disappeared.
00:13:27Disappeared? I can't explain it.
00:13:29She just vanished.
00:13:33There seems to be some kind of spatial rift
00:13:35right where she disappeared.
00:13:37Can you determine where it leads?
00:13:39Stand by, Bridge.
00:13:46I just threw a piece of conduit into the rift.
00:13:48Just as it vanished, I detected another oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere.
00:13:52Another atmosphere?
00:13:53Whatever's on the other side of that rift there's air-- maybe Kes is still alive.
00:13:58( low booming )
00:14:01Get out of there, Torres. The hull breach is widening.
00:14:04I'm going to evacuate the entire deck.
00:14:06You don't have to tell me twice.
00:14:08The main computer core is failing.
00:14:09Switching to backup processor.
00:14:11( grunts )
00:14:13Chakotay, are you ready to magnetize the hull?
00:14:15Standby. I'm having trouble with the alignment module.
00:14:18Try remodulating the field emitter.
00:14:20( all grunting )
00:14:22Chakotay.
00:14:25I've got alignment.
00:14:26Magnetizing the hull.
00:14:38I think it worked. Let's hope so.
00:14:41I want a full damage report from all decks.
00:14:42Are you all right, Captain?
00:14:44It's just a scratch.
00:14:45It's more than a scratch, maybe should go...
00:14:47I'm fine, Lieutenant.
00:14:48TUVOK: Damage reports are coming in.
00:14:50The hull breach on Deck 15 has widened to include Deck 14, Section 12.
00:14:55And there are 632 micro-fractures along the hull's infrastructure.
00:14:59All primary systems are off-line.
00:15:01We are running on emergency power only.
00:15:04The antimatter supply has dropped to 18% and is continuing to fall.
00:15:09Warp coils in both nacelles have fused and are inoperative.
00:15:12The environmental control systems are failing.
00:15:1515 crew members have been seriously wounded with plasma burns.
00:15:1927 experienced other injuries.
00:15:21The doctor is setting up triage facilities in Sick Bay and Holodeck Two.
00:15:25I must also regretfully report that Ensign Wildman's baby did not survive.
00:15:34I want an engineering team to seal those micro-fractures before they become breaches. TUVOK: Aye, Captain.
00:15:39Mr. Paris, grab a medical tricorder and go assist the doctor. Right.
00:15:43Commander, you have the Bridge.
00:15:44I'm going to go talk to Ensign Wildman.
00:15:45Maybe I can help... MAN: Hold on...
00:15:48( grunting )
00:15:55The magnetic field is collapsing.
00:15:57The hull is depolarizing.
00:16:04The fire suppression system is out!
00:16:06COMPUTER: Warning! Hull breach on Deck One.
00:16:09Emergency force fields inoperative.
00:16:11Everybody out!
00:16:12Go! Go! Go!
00:16:17Hurry, Captain!
00:16:18I'm trying to reroute emergency power to the field emitters!
00:16:25Captain!
00:16:26I can seal this breach!
00:16:37Captain, let's go!
00:16:49Captain?
00:16:51Ensign Kim, scan the Bridge.
00:16:55I just saw myself cross the Bridge and enter that turbolift.
00:16:59It was very faint-- almost like a ghost image, and I looked like hell.
00:17:07Captain, there was a minor spatial fluctuation on the Bridge, but it was only there for a millisecond.
00:17:13Bridge to Engineering.
00:17:14B'Elanna, how long until we can use the main sensor array?
00:17:17Another three hours.
00:17:18We're only about halfway through the proton burst procedure.
00:17:21See if you can speed up the process.
00:17:22We need the sensors as soon as possible.
00:17:25Understood.
00:17:26Mr. Kim, modify a tricorder to scan for spatial anomalies.
00:17:31Go over every centimeter of this Bridge.
00:17:34Examine the sensor logs from our trip through the plasma drift.
00:17:37Look for anything unusual.
00:17:40I'll be in Sick Bay.
00:17:41Aye, Captain.
00:17:47Good news, Ensign.
00:17:48Our baby is perfectly healthy.
00:17:51There's no sign of any inter-species abnormalities.
00:17:54"Our" baby?
00:17:56A figure of speech.
00:17:57I am, in part, responsible for bringing her into the world.
00:18:02You may hold her now.
00:18:05Hello, there.
00:18:10Congratulations, Samantha.
00:18:15She's adorable.
00:18:17Have you thought of a name?
00:18:19Not yet.
00:18:20I really thought it would be a boy.
00:18:22Let me know as soon as you decide.
00:18:24I've been making a blanket for her.
00:18:26All that's missing is an initial.
00:18:33Get some rest.
00:18:37How's our other patient doing?
00:18:39She's still unconscious.
00:18:41I ran a microcellular scan.
00:18:42We're almost identical in every way.
00:18:44Almost?
00:18:45There's a slight phase shift in their DNA.
00:18:48Do you have any theory about where she came from?
00:18:51Not yet, but I intend to find out.
00:18:55Can you wake her?
00:18:56I believe so.
00:18:57Good... because I think she's going to have an interesting story to tell.
00:19:08I was running through the corridor with my medkit...
00:19:11Deck 15...
00:19:15And then, suddenly, I felt dizzy, and my vision started to blur.
00:19:25After that, I don't remember anything, until you woke me up just now.
00:19:30You were found unconscious down on Deck 15 holding a medkit.
00:19:34We also found this lying next to you.
00:19:37It's a piece of damaged conduit.
00:19:40Our analysis shows it's from Voyager.
00:19:43Deck 15,
00:19:44Section 29-Alpha, Bulkhead 052.
00:19:48But there's no damage to Deck 15 or anywhere else on this ship.
00:19:51There was massive damage to Deck 15.
00:19:54The evidence would seem to suggest that you've come from a different ship, a different Voyager.
00:20:01We did find a spatial rift on Deck 15.
00:20:05It's possible that it somehow connects us to this other Voyager.
00:20:08If you're right, where is the other ship?
00:20:10A parallel universe? Another dimension?
00:20:12Another point in time?
00:20:13I'm not sure.
00:20:15Almost everything about the Voyager Kes described is identical to ours.
00:20:19We've had similar experiences, similar personal histories.
00:20:23We both entered a plasma cloud to avoid the Vidiians.
00:20:27Both of our engines stalled as we left the cloud, which caused both of our antimatter supplies to drain, and then we both decided to keep our engines running by emitting proton bursts.
00:20:38But after that, our experiences diverged.
00:20:43We started emitting the proton bursts.
00:20:47They didn't.
00:20:48Our ship was being damaged by proton bursts.
00:20:51We couldn't figure out where they were coming from.
00:20:53That's more than a coincidence.
00:20:55Janeway to Engineering.
00:20:56B'Elanna, I want you to stop the proton bursts immediately.
00:20:59But if we stop now, the power levels will...
00:21:00I'll explain later, Lieutenant.
00:21:03Understood.
00:21:05I don't know how, but there's another Voyager out there, and I intend to find it.
00:21:13( gentle dramatic theme playing )
00:21:17We analyzed the sensor logs from our trip through the plasma cloud.
00:21:20We couldn't find anything unusual, until we ran a quantum-level analysis.
00:21:24Remember that subspace turbulence we hit just before we left the cloud? JANEWAY: Yes.
00:21:28Well, watch what happens.
00:21:33KIM: At first, we thought it was a sensor aberration, but they were in perfect calibration at the time.
00:21:38B'ELANNA: So I ran a multispectral analysis on the subspace turbulence.
00:21:42It was more than just turbulence.
00:21:43It was some kind of divergence field.
00:21:45And the moment we passed through it, all of our sensor readings doubled.
00:21:49Mass, energy output, bio-signatures-- everything.
00:21:52Every particle of matter on the ship seems to have been duplicated in that instant.
00:21:57So where's the other ship?
00:21:59As strange as it sounds, Captain, according to these readings, another Voyager is right here, right now, occupying the same point in space/time that we are.
00:22:09Quantum theorists at Kent State University ran an experiment in which a single particle of matter was duplicated using the divergence of subspace fields-- a spatial scission.
00:22:19If the same forces were at work inside the plasma cloud, they may have duplicated every particle of matter on Voyager.
00:22:24Matter-- but not antimatter.
00:22:28Captain?
00:22:29In that Kent State experiment, they were able to duplicate normal matter, but when they tried to duplicate antimatter particles, the experiment failed.
00:22:37So the antimatter on the ships
00:22:40wasn't duplicated.
00:22:42Both engines have been trying to draw power from a single source of antimatter.
00:22:47Like Siamese twins linked at the chest with only one heart.
00:22:51So what do we do?
00:22:53I don't know.
00:22:54But whatever it is, we're going to have to coordinate it with the other ship.
00:22:57Start working on a way to communicate with them. Right.
00:23:00The only link we know of is on Deck 15-- the spatial rift.
00:23:04We're going to need a way to send Kes back through safely.
00:23:07We could rig a portable phase discriminator.
00:23:10It might protect her from the spatial transition.
00:23:12Get on it.
00:23:16When can I start breast feeding?
00:23:18Right away.
00:23:19However, I should forewarn you that her incisors will erupt within three to four weeks.
00:23:24Since your skin lacks the scales of a Ktarian, we'll have to discuss alternatives.
00:23:30When can I take her home?
00:23:32In 24 hours. I want to observe the infant to make sure there's no more damage to her cell membranes.
00:23:37You're welcome to stay the night so you may be with her.
00:23:40I'd like that. ( baby crying )
00:23:42Hey. What's the matter?
00:23:52ZIMMERMAN: Congratulations, Ensign, it's a girl.
00:23:55I've stabilized my imaging array
00:23:56but it could go out at any time.
00:23:58KES: Doctor, her cell membranes are losing cohesion.
00:24:00ZIMMERMAN: Try remodulating the osmotic pressure.
00:24:02KES: No effect.
00:24:03Again. Nothing.
00:24:05WILDMAN: My baby, she's going to die, isn't she?
00:24:07ZIMMERMAN: I'm sorry, Ensign. ( monitor flatlining )
00:24:08She's going to die, isn't she?
00:24:10( baby crying )
00:24:12ZIMMERMAN ( faintly ): Kes...
00:24:15Kes?
00:24:16( gasps )
00:24:18Are you all right?
00:24:20Yes.
00:24:22It's just... the baby's crying.
00:24:25It was like a bad memory.
00:24:27What do you mean?
00:24:29On my Voyager, during the delivery, there were complications.
00:24:35We performed a fetal transport.
00:24:37The same thing happened here.
00:24:39The transport was successful.
00:24:41On my ship, the medical systems were heavily damaged.
00:24:45The osmotic pressure therapy didn't work.
00:24:48The baby died.
00:24:50I'm sorry to hear that, but try to understand, it wasn't your fault.
00:24:54The situation was out of your control.
00:24:57Doctor, I've got to get back to my ship.
00:24:59They need my help. The captain's working on it, Kes.
00:25:03In the meantime, try to get some rest.
00:25:09Besides, I'm sure your Voyager is also equipped with a proficient emergency medical hologram.
00:25:22It's a little harder to establish a com link than I thought, Captain.
00:25:25The molecular signature of the second Voyager is slightly out of phase with our own.
00:25:29I can't get visual, audio-- nothing.
00:25:32Have you tried remodulating the com-frequency carrier?
00:25:34Five times on 47 different frequencies.
00:25:36There has to be a way.
00:25:38If they were recalibrating their carrier wave at the same time-- so we could match phase variants-- would that allow us to connect?
00:25:45I think so, but in order to get them to do that we'd have to communicate with them first.
00:25:49It's the chicken and the egg.
00:25:52Maybe we need something a little more primitive.
00:25:54Is there a signal we could emit on all subspace bands just to get their attention?
00:25:59A rotating band pulse might do it, but it wouldn't be much more than a shrill whistle.
00:26:05That might be enough, give it a try.
00:26:07All right, Captain.
00:26:09All of the ship's command functions have been rerouted to Main Engineering.
00:26:12JANEWAY: Welcome to the new Bridge.
00:26:14Now, let's see about...
00:26:15( shrill tone ) What's that?
00:26:18TORRES: I don't know. It's some kind of com-emissions coming through all subspace bands.
00:26:22Coming from where?
00:26:23Good question.
00:26:24I can't tell, but it's got a Federation signature.
00:26:27Try recalibrating our frequency carrier to match it.
00:26:33( shrill tone ) That's it.
00:26:35They recalibrated and locked onto our phase variant.
00:26:38What kind of communication can we establish?
00:26:40Not much at this point. We can use the emergency encryption code for a short message.
00:26:44Not more than five seconds.
00:26:45That should be enough.
00:26:50JANEWAY 1: That's the emergency code.
00:26:51Run it through an alpha-numeric sequencer.
00:26:57TORRES: I think someone's telling us to lock onto a frequency of 12 gigahertz.
00:27:04Do it.
00:27:11I'll try to clear it up.
00:27:19Captain, this isn't an illusion.
00:27:22What you're seeing is real,
00:27:24but it's going to take some explaining.
00:27:27There are two Voyagers and two crews?
00:27:29That's what I was told.
00:27:31Could this possibly be some kind of subterfuge, Captain?
00:27:34An alien deception?
00:27:36That woman, whoever she is, had very specific knowledge of what happened here-- the damage from the proton bursts,
00:27:41Wildman's baby, Kes disappearing.
00:27:43She even knew that when I was 12 years old,
00:27:45I walked home in a thunderstorm over seven kilometers because I lost a tennis match.
00:27:49And her explanation of how the ships were duplicated-- certainly plausible.
00:27:54If it is true, what do we do about it?
00:27:56My... counterpart has suggested we try to merge the two ships.
00:28:02Recreate the subspace divergence field we passed through and then depolarize it.
00:28:05Both ships would have to send out a massive resonance pulse from their deflector dishes at exactly the same time.
00:28:11They may be able to do that, but we barely have enough power for life support.
00:28:15How can we get enough to send an energy pulse of that size?
00:28:19We could evacuate all the crew to this deck and cut off life support everywhere else.
00:28:22Then we could divert all power to the deflector dish.
00:28:25B'Elanna, reestablish the com link with the other ship.
00:28:31This is Janeway. What have you decided?
00:28:35Captain, we think we can channel enough energy to our deflector dish to try the merging process.
00:28:40Good. When can we start?
00:28:42We'll need at least 15 minutes to make our preparations.
00:28:45We'll be ready.
00:28:46And Captain... we'll only have enough power to try this once.
00:28:52I understand.
00:28:56Chakotay, Tuvok-- begin the evacuation process.
00:28:58Aye, Captain.
00:29:00I'll tell the doctor know he'll have to rely on his backup power supply.
00:29:05( beeping )
00:29:14( sighs )
00:29:16We're ready, Captain.
00:29:19We're standing by, Captain.
00:29:21I think you should take the lead
00:29:23in this operation since you may have to make allowances
00:29:25for your weakened power systems.
00:29:27Acknowledged.
00:29:28Lieutenant Torres, and Lieutenant Torres.
00:29:31Charge the deflector dishes.
00:29:34Deflector dish charging.
00:29:36Capacitance levels are rising.
00:29:38Sixty percent.
00:29:40Eighty-five percent.
00:29:41Ninety-eight percent...
00:29:44We're ready to create the subspace divergence field.
00:29:47Initiating.
00:29:49Power flow nominal, Captain.
00:29:51Synchronize computer event timing.
00:29:55Ready to release depolarization pulse on my mark.
00:30:00Now.
00:30:10The pulses have been emitted, Captain.
00:30:12The fields are starting to depolarize.
00:30:14But we aren't merging.
00:30:15In fact, we're going further out of phase!
00:30:18Increase power to the deflector dish.
00:30:22I can't! Too much plasma backflow.
00:30:24If we keep this up, we're going to lose our antimatter connection.
00:30:27We'll both be destroyed.
00:30:28Abort!
00:30:29Aborting resonance pulse.
00:30:31What went wrong? I'm not sure.
00:30:33I think the plasma flow became too turbulent.
00:30:35The divergence fields were so chaotic we couldn't complete the merging.
00:30:39We've lost the com link as well.
00:30:41( gasps )
00:30:42Captain, the antimatter leak?
00:30:46It's becoming a hemorrhage.
00:30:47If we don't start the proton bursts, we'll be completely drained in 30 minutes.
00:30:51The lives of both crews are at stake here.
00:30:53I can't make unilateral decisions that might affect that other ship.
00:30:56Janeway to Kim.
00:30:57Is the spatial rift still stable?
00:31:00I think so, Captain, and I've rigged a phase discriminator.
00:31:02Kes should be able to go back safely.
00:31:04Rig another one, Ensign.
00:31:06I'm going with her.
00:31:13This should protect you from the spatial transition.
00:31:16Keep trying to reestablish a com-link between the ships.
00:31:19I will. But remember, we have fewer than 30 minutes of antimatter left.
00:31:22Whatever you do over there, do it fast.
00:31:24Understood. Are you ready? Yes.
00:31:33It's gotten worse here.
00:31:35Command Control is in Main Engineering.
00:31:37Let's go.
00:31:40I don't know how else to stop the antimatter drain, except with proton bursts.
00:31:44We can't do that.
00:31:46We'd damage the other ship just like this one.
00:31:49Think, people. We need options.
00:31:51I agree, Captain.
00:31:55And I think we need to talk.
00:32:05By my estimates, our antimatter supply will run out in less than half an hour.
00:32:10The attempt to merge our ships is throwing us further out of phase.
00:32:13The quantum cohesion on both Voyagers is breaking down.
00:32:18Just like the original Kent State experiment.
00:32:20The duplicate atoms couldn't occupy the same point in space/time for very long before...
00:32:25Mutual annihilation.
00:32:28What are our options?
00:32:29Let's try a different tack.
00:32:31Instead of trying to merge the two ships, let's try to separate them.
00:32:36Maybe we could divide the antimatter between us.
00:32:39I'm afraid not.
00:32:40We've been studying that theory.
00:32:42B'Elanna tells me that any attempt to disrupt the antimatter supply would destroy us all.
00:32:47What about evacuating your crew to my ship?
00:32:49It might get crowded, but we could manage.
00:32:51We've been studying that theory, and my B'Elanna tells me that sending any more than five to ten people through the rift would radically alter the atomic balance of the two Voyagers.
00:33:01We'd both be destroyed.
00:33:08Captain, I think you should return to your ship and run a metallurgical analysis.
00:33:12Find out the precise phase modulation of your hull.
00:33:16I'll do the same here.
00:33:17Maybe we can find a way to realign the phase displacement.
00:33:21You're going to self-destruct your ship.
00:33:24What makes you say that?
00:33:26Because that's what I would do if your Voyager were intact and my Voyager were crippled.
00:33:31My crew wounded or dead.
00:33:33I'd sacrifice my ship so that yours could survive.
00:33:36Then I'm glad we agree.
00:33:39Go back to your ship.
00:33:40I didn't say I agree.
00:33:42I said I understand.
00:33:44I'm not willing to let you make that sacrifice yet.
00:33:46We haven't explored all the options.
00:33:48Yes, we have, and we both know it.
00:33:49This is my ship and my decision.
00:33:52Captain, I'm not going to let--
00:33:53I've made my decision.
00:33:54Please don't make me call security and have you escorted off my ship because...
00:33:59( quiet ) you know I'll do it.
00:34:03All right, I'll go back, but give me 15 minutes to come up with another solution.
00:34:08After that, it's your decision.
00:34:1215 minutes.
00:34:15Good luck.
00:34:18To both of us.
00:34:25Okay, I've managed to reestablish a com-link with the other Voyager.
00:34:29Hail them.
00:34:31Captain, I've got an idea.
00:34:33Actually, it was yours.
00:34:35It might be possible to realign the phase displacement between us.
00:34:38We don't have time to try it.
00:34:39My plan is the one that's going to work.
00:34:41It's time that we both accept that.
00:34:43( alarm wailing )
00:34:44We've got a perimeter alert.
00:34:45A vessel is approaching bearing 005 mark 318.
00:34:49They've just dropped out of warp.
00:34:51Can you identify them?
00:34:52They're Vidiian, sir.
00:34:55Red Alert.
00:34:57Shields. Still off-line.
00:34:59Captain, we're picking up a Vidiian ship heading this way.
00:35:02Can you see them too? Yes.
00:35:04Do you have any weapons?
00:35:05Stand by. Tuvok?
00:35:07Negative, Captain. We had to reroute power to compensate for the antimatter loss.
00:35:10It would take several hours to bring weapons back on-line.
00:35:18VIDIIAN COMMANDER: What is it?
00:35:19Their ship seems to be trapped in some sort of spatial flux.
00:35:23Have they detected us?
00:35:24Yes, but they can't raise their shields.
00:35:27And it appears that whatever is happening to them has disrupted their weapons systems.
00:35:32Load a hyper-thermic charge.
00:35:37Fire.
00:35:38Captain, they have fired an energy weapon.
00:35:41All hands, brace for impact.
00:35:43Damage Control teams stand by.
00:35:48( all grunting )
00:35:51What happened? They couldn't have missed.
00:35:53Maybe they hit the other Voyager.
00:35:55Hail them.
00:35:56I've lost the com-link again.
00:35:57Try to get it back.
00:36:08We have destroyed their weapons array.
00:36:11Maneuver us to within grappling range.
00:36:21They are cutting an access route through the hull on Deck 5.
00:36:27( dramatic theme playing )
00:36:47( both grunt )
00:36:54( sensor beeping )
00:36:56Vulcan, male.
00:36:57Phaser blast damaged the right kidney, but the other organs are healthy.
00:37:01Begin with them.
00:37:11( grunts )
00:37:20( sensor beeping )
00:37:23I've erected an emergency force field around Sick Bay-- that should hold them off for a while.
00:37:28I won't let them take my baby.
00:37:29It's going to be all right, Ensign.
00:37:30Give her to me and I'll hide her inside an access port.
00:37:33If they do break in, it's unlikely they'll look for anyone there. ( baby crying )
00:37:37Trust me, Ensign.
00:37:38I won't let anyone touch our baby.
00:37:40Mama will see you soon.
00:37:42Lieutenant, give me a hand. Move this.
00:37:45We're going to have to cut away the internal circuitry to make room...
00:37:48( phaser blast ) Vidiians.
00:37:50They're using some kind of disrupter to break down the force field.
00:37:56The force field's down.
00:38:02JANEWAY: Commander...
00:38:03They've got everything below Deck 5, and I don't know how much longer we can keep them away from the Bridge.
00:38:07Mr. Kim, how many Vidiians are there on this ship?
00:38:10347 and more are boarding.
00:38:12We're outnumbered two to one.
00:38:13I've got an incoming subspace signal.
00:38:15It's from the other Voyager.
00:38:17They must have reestablished the com-link.
00:38:18Onscreen.
00:38:21Captain, this com-link might not last much longer.
00:38:24What's happening over there?
00:38:25We've been boarded.
00:38:27The Vidiians are on the verge of taking over our ship.
00:38:29Are they on yours?
00:38:31No. We don't think they can detect our ship.
00:38:34Captain, we can have a security detachment
00:38:36cross the spatial rift and board your ship
00:38:38within five minutes.
00:38:41No. If we do that, the Vidiians might become aware of your Voyager.
00:38:47That would put both ships at risk.
00:38:49We can't just stand by and let you all be killed.
00:38:52I'm not about to let that happen.
00:38:55I'll destroy this ship.
00:38:57I don't suppose there's any way I can change your mind.
00:39:01I know how stubborn you can be.
00:39:03True.
00:39:05But there is something else I can do for you.
00:39:08I'm going to send Harry Kim through the rift with Ensign Wildman's baby.
00:39:12Somehow it seems only fair.
00:39:14We'll be waiting for them.
00:39:17Just make me a promise, Kathryn.
00:39:19Get your crew home.
00:39:22I will.
00:39:24I will.
00:39:29Harry, you've got five minutes.
00:39:31Get the baby.
00:39:32But Captain-- Move it, Ensign!
00:39:34That's an order!
00:39:41Computer, initiate the self-destruct sequence.
00:39:44Authorization Janeway Pi 1-1-0.
00:39:48Set at five minutes and mute voice warnings.
00:39:56Enable.
00:39:58COMPUTER: Warning. Self-destruct sequence has been initiated.
00:40:02Warp core overload in four minutes, 55 seconds.
00:40:06There will be no further audio warnings.
00:40:09( dramatic theme playing )
00:40:16Ocampa, female.
00:40:17The organs are healthy.
00:40:18She has an extremely high rate of tissue regeneration.
00:40:21Extract her pelvic ridge.
00:40:23We'll analyze the bone marrow for phage resistance.
00:40:27VIDIIAN 1: The others are human.
00:40:29My scans indicate their pancreatic tissues are well-suited for transplant.
00:40:33VIDIIAN 2: Begin the extraction procedure.
00:40:35( gasps ) Shh. ( whimpers )
00:40:40This one-- a female human.
00:40:42She's recently given birth.
00:40:43Are you certain?
00:40:45Yes. Her hemo-uterine levels are far above normal.
00:40:47Where's the infant?
00:40:49Set your bio-pro to maximum. Find it.
00:40:51( whimpering ) Shh... Shh, shh.
00:40:56( Vidiian voices speaking indistinctly nearby )
00:41:01( both Vidiians speaking indistinctly )
00:41:17( grunts )
00:41:23No!
00:41:24Ensign Kim, is that you?
00:41:26Doc!
00:41:27Am I glad to see you.
00:41:29Have we retaken the ship?
00:41:30No. Actually, the captain's put the ship on self-destruct.
00:41:33She ordered me to take the baby and go to the other Voyager.
00:41:36Well, I guess you'd better hurry then.
00:41:40Goodbye, Doc.
00:41:41Ensign, tell my counterpart that I've corrected all signs of hemocythemia.
00:41:46He'll know what that means.
00:41:47Will do.
00:41:56Hello.
00:41:58I'm Captain Kathryn Janeway.
00:42:01Welcome to the Bridge.
00:42:03Commander!
00:42:05( beeping )
00:42:19( B'Elanna sighs )
00:42:20It's about time.
00:42:21Tuvok to Janeway.
00:42:23Ensign Kim has made it through the rift.
00:42:25With the infant.
00:42:26Acknowledged.
00:42:28Captain, the Vidiian ship has been destroyed.
00:42:34So has the other Voyager.
00:42:35( building dramatic score )
00:42:42JANEWAY: Captain's log, Stardate 49548.7.
00:42:46There are no signs of any pursuing Vidiian vessels
00:42:49and we have resumed a course toward home.
00:42:53Repair efforts are underway.
00:42:55Lieutenant Torres estimates we'll be able to return to the Bridge within three days.
00:42:59Good. I'm not sure how much longer
00:43:01B'Elanna can tolerate my standing over her shoulder in Engineering.
00:43:04Hm...
00:43:06Tuvok, is there something on your mind?
00:43:10I am curious, Captain.
00:43:12Before the Vidiians attacked, when you were in disagreement with the other captain...
00:43:16Would I have given the order to self-destruct our ship?
00:43:19I've gone over that moment a thousand times in my mind.
00:43:23The truth is, yes, I would've given the order.
00:43:27But I will admit, there was a part of me that could see her point of view.
00:43:34One could say that you are both the doubter and the doubted.
00:43:38I do not envy the paradox of logic you were faced with in that situation.
00:43:42Neither did I.
00:43:45And neither did she.
00:43:56( cooing )
00:44:00Thank you.
00:44:01Thank you so much.
00:44:03You're welcome.
00:44:05But you should also thank the doctor.
00:44:07It was his counterpart who saved her from the Vidiians.
00:44:10I'm not surprised.
00:44:12I am programmed to be heroic when the need arises.
00:44:15By the way, Ensign, this other doctor, did he have a name?
00:44:19I really didn't have time to ask.
00:44:22Am I allowed to go back to my temporary Bridge now, Doctor?
00:44:25By all means.
00:44:26( baby cooing )
00:44:34It's good to have you back, Ensign.
00:44:36Thank you.
00:44:37I think.
00:44:39Something wrong?
00:44:40I'm not sure.
00:44:41I mean, this isn't really my ship.
00:44:44And you're not really my captain, and yet you are, and there's no difference, but I know there's a difference.
00:44:51Or is there?
00:44:53It's all a little weird.
00:44:55Mr. Kim, we're Starfleet officers.
00:44:58Weird is part of the job.
