00:25:38I wanted to talk to you about Tuvix.
00:25:41He came to see me this afternoon.
00:25:43Oh?
00:25:44He said... he said that he loves me.
00:25:51I suppose I can see how that's possible, given the circumstances.
00:25:56I wasn't sure what to say.
00:25:58At first I was angry, but I know how he's trying to comfort me and I know that he feels alone, too.
00:26:06To tell the truth, he's a wonderful person.
00:26:10Do you have feelings for him, too, Kes?
00:26:13No, I don't.
00:26:15I mean, how could I?
00:26:17I still love Neelix... and I'm not ready to give up on him, no matter what the Doctor says.
00:26:24I know how you feel.
00:26:29You're experiencing what people on this crew have been going through since we first got stranded in this Quadrant.
00:26:37Do we accept that we're separated from our loved ones forever?
00:26:42Or do we hold on to the hope that, someday, we'll be with them again?
00:26:49What do you do, Captain?
00:26:52Oh... I struggle with it every day.
00:26:55Sometimes, I'm full of hope and optimism.
00:26:59Other times...
00:27:01( clears throat )
00:27:04I dream about being with Mark...
00:27:09...and it's so real.
00:27:14Then, when I wake up and realize it's just a dream,
00:27:18I'm terribly discouraged.
00:27:22In those moments, it's impossible to deny just how far away he really is.
00:27:28And, uh...
00:27:35I know that, someday,
00:27:39I may have to accept that he's not part of my life anymore.
00:27:44So, are you saying that I should just accept that Neelix isn't a part of my life anymore?
00:27:50I would never tell you or anyone else to give up hope, Kes.
00:27:57I think the best thing you can do now... is give yourself time.
00:28:04Thank you, Captain.
00:28:09I'll go now and let you sleep.
00:28:14My door is always open to you, Kes.
00:28:35JANEWAY: Captain's Log, Stardate 49678.4.
00:28:39It's been two weeks
00:28:41since the transporter accident that created Mr. Tuvix
00:28:44and, while it's still not entirely clear
00:28:46that he's with us permanently,
00:28:47he's certainly been doing his best to settle in.
00:28:51The crew seems to be growing accustomed to his presence,
00:28:54and he's proving to be a very able Tactical Officer
00:28:56who isn't afraid to express his opinions.
00:28:58While he's forging relationships
00:29:00with many of the officers,
00:29:02he seems to be keeping a respectful distance from Kes,
00:29:06allowing her to adjust to the circumstances
00:29:08on her own terms.
00:29:10As for my relationship with Tuvix,
00:29:13I've found him to be an able advisor,
00:29:15who skillfully uses humor to make his points.
00:29:18And although I feel a bit guilty saying it,
00:29:22his cooking is better than Neelix's.
00:29:24My taste buds are definitely happy
00:29:26to have him around.
00:29:30( playing medium tempo melody)
00:29:49DOCTOR: Sick Bay to Ensign Kim.
00:29:51Please turn to your emergency medical holographic channel.
00:30:01How can I help you, Doc?
00:30:03Suppose I found a radioisotope
00:30:04that could selectively attach itself
00:30:07to specific DNA sequences.
00:30:08Could the surgical transporters be reprogrammed
00:30:10to lock on to those enhanced sequences
00:30:12and separate them from the remaining DNA?
00:30:15Well, I think so, but we'd have to modify the molecular imaging scanners, and find a way to compensate for the higher levels of radiation.
00:30:24Thank you, Ensign.
00:30:25Wait a second.
00:30:26What's going on?
00:30:29It's pure speculation at this point.
00:30:31I'll let you know when I've learned more.
00:30:33This is about Tuvix, isn't it?
00:30:36I'm on my way.
00:30:48Eight ball, corner pocket.
00:31:00That's game again, Commander.
00:31:02We've created a monster.
00:31:04Best out of five?
00:31:06( door opens, closes )
00:31:19Would you mind if we finished this later, Commander?
00:31:21Not at all.
00:31:29Hi.
00:31:31Hi.
00:31:33( clears throat )
00:31:37How have you been?
00:31:39Good days and bad days.
00:31:42You?
00:31:43Me, too.
00:31:44Listen, I'm sorry I've been so distant lately.
00:31:47Kes, you don't owe me an explanation.
00:31:52I've been doing a lot of thinking.
00:31:56And I'm hoping that we can be friends.
00:32:02I would like that very much.
00:32:06And I'd like our friendship to grow.
00:32:08You would?
00:32:10Yes.
00:32:11But it's going to take time.
00:32:16I'm not going anywhere.
00:32:21Doctor to Lieutenant Tuvix.
00:32:25Tuvix here.
00:32:27Please report to Sick Bay immediately.
00:32:31DOCTOR: Until late in the 21st century, physicians administered barium to patients with certain gastrointestinal disorders.
00:32:38The radioactive properties of the barium made the lining of the intestines visible, with a primitive imaging technology called X rays.
00:32:45Instead of barium, we've come up with a radioisotope that attaches itself to the DNA of one of the merged species, but not the other.
00:32:54Then we simply beam out the selected DNA, and segregate the two merged species.
00:33:02You see these?
00:33:04They used to be a single merged flower.
00:33:06And you can use this same process?
00:33:08It will require a more detailed reprogramming of the transporter, but, yes, I believe we can restore
00:33:14Mr. Tuvok and Mr. Neelix.
00:33:17That's wonderful.
00:33:19Isn't that wonderful?
00:33:21I assure you, Mr. Tuvix, there's nothing to worry about.
00:33:24We've accounted for every variable.
00:33:28Except one.
00:33:31I don't want to die.
00:33:44It's funny... if we'd had the ability to separate Tuvok and Neelix the moment Tuvix came aboard...
00:33:51I wouldn't have hesitated.
00:33:52Of course not.
00:33:54But now... in the past few weeks... he's begun to make a life for himself on this ship.
00:34:02He's taken on responsibilities... made friends...
00:34:05I count myself as one of them.
00:34:08So, at what point did he become an individual and not a transporter accident?
00:34:13( door chimes )
00:34:16( sighs )
00:34:18Come in.
00:34:21You wanted to see me, Captain?
00:34:25Yes, Mr. Tuvix.
00:34:26Please, sit down.
00:34:32I feel as though
00:34:33I've been dragged in front of the Numirian Inquisition.
00:34:36Will you excuse us, Commander?
00:34:42( door opens, closes )
00:34:44We've just been discussing the unfortunate... predicament that we're all facing, and I thought it was important to get your perspective before making a decision.
00:34:57Are you suggesting that this is your decision to make?
00:35:01I am the Captain of this ship.
00:35:03Begging your pardon, Captain, it's my life.
00:35:07Isn't it my decision?
00:35:09Aren't there two other lives to consider here?
00:35:12What about Tuvok and Neelix-- two voices that we can't hear right now?
00:35:18As Captain, I must be their voice, and I believe they would want to live.
00:35:24But they are living, in a way.
00:35:26Inside me.
00:35:27It's not the same.
00:35:30And I think you'd agree with me.
00:35:34They have families.
00:35:36Friends.
00:35:38People who love them and miss them and want them back, just as I do.
00:35:44But restoring their lives means sacrificing mine.
00:35:48Captain... what you're considering is an execution.
00:35:53An execution-- like they used to do to murderers centuries ago-- and I've committed no crime at all.
00:36:00Aren't you arguing for an execution, too-- of Tuvok and Neelix?
00:36:05I'm here-- alive.
00:36:08Unfortunate as it may be, they're gone.
00:36:11And I have an opportunity to bring them back.
00:36:13Don't you think that I care about Tuvok and Neelix?
00:36:18Of course I do!
00:36:19Without them, I wouldn't exist.
00:36:22In a way, I think of them as my parents.
00:36:25I feel like I know them intimately.
00:36:27Then you know Tuvok was a man who would gladly give his life to save another.
00:36:33And I believe the same was true of Neelix.
00:36:37You're right, Captain.
00:36:41That is the Starfleet way.
00:36:45And I know there'll be some people who will call me a coward because I didn't sacrifice myself willingly.
00:36:53Believe me,
00:36:54I've thought of that.
00:36:56But I have the will to live of two men.
00:37:00Look at me, Captain.
00:37:04When I'm happy, I laugh.
00:37:08When I'm sad, I cry.
00:37:09When I stub my toe,
00:37:11I yell out in pain.
00:37:14I'm flesh and blood.
00:37:16And I... have the right to live!
00:37:40Kes...
00:37:42I need your help.
00:37:45I've just come from the Captain, and she's thinking about forcing me to go through with the separation.
00:37:54If anybody can make a difference, Kes, it's you.
00:37:57She'll listen to you.
00:37:59We've helped each other through this, and I know that you care about what happens to me.
00:38:07Please.
00:38:09Kes, you may be my only hope.
00:38:19( door chimes )
00:38:20Come in.
00:38:24Captain...
00:38:26Tuvix has asked me to speak to you on his behalf.
00:38:32But I can't.
00:38:35He shouldn't have put you in the middle of this.
00:38:37But I am in the middle.
00:38:39I have been since the moment of the accident.
00:38:44I don't know how to say good-bye to Neelix and Tuvok.
00:38:50I know this sounds horrible... and I feel so guilty for saying it... and Tuvix doesn't deserve to die... but I want Neelix back.
00:39:05( sobbing )
00:39:21You're excused, Ensign.
00:39:29Mr. Paris, what is our present speed?
00:39:31Warp 6.5.
00:39:34I'd like to conduct a field test of the aft sensor array.
00:39:38Please, slow to impulse.
00:39:42Commander?
00:39:44Until the Captain makes a decision,
00:39:47Mr. Tuvix is still the Tactical Officer.
00:40:16Mr. Tuvix?
00:40:19I'd like to speak to you alone.
00:40:21Can I assume that you've come to a decision, Captain?
00:40:25I have.
00:40:27I think we all should hear what you have to say!
00:40:32Please come with me, Mr. Tuvix.
00:40:36No.
00:40:39I'm ordering you to come with me.
00:40:47Security to the Bridge.
00:40:49Commander, are you going to stand by and do nothing while she commits murder?!
00:40:55Wha..?
00:40:56Mr. Ayala!
00:40:59Yes...
00:41:01Lieutenant Paris... you...
00:41:08Doesn't anyone see that this is wrong?!
00:41:13( door opens )
00:41:26( panting )
00:41:31JANEWAY: Let him go.
00:41:38Each of you is going to have to live with this... and I'm sorry for that.
00:41:47For you are all good... good people.
00:41:53My colleagues.
00:41:58My friends.
00:42:03I forgive you.
00:42:19Commander Chakotay, advise the Doctor we're on our way to Sick Bay.
00:42:27Deck 5.
00:42:47I'm sorry, Captain, but I cannot perform the surgical separation.
00:42:52I am a physician, and a physician must do no harm.
00:42:57I will not take Mr. Tuvix' life against his will.
00:43:00Very well, Doctor.
00:43:03Please step aside.
00:43:14I assume this is the radioisotope.
00:43:20Please sit down on this bio-bed.
00:43:54Locking surgical targeting scanners onto the isotope probe.
00:43:59Initiating separation sequence.
00:44:11Energizing.
00:44:29Neelix!
00:44:30Hello, sweeting!
00:44:34Greetings, Captain.
00:44:36Mr. Tuvok...
00:44:38Mr. Neelix... it's good to have you back.
