00:00:01CHAKOTAY: First Officer's Log,
00:00:03Stardate 50614.2.
00:00:05Ensign Kaplan and I are returning to Voyager
00:00:07after completing a scouting mission in the Nekrit Expanse.
00:00:11The nebula's completely scrambling our navigational readings.
00:00:15I still can't get a fix on our position.
00:00:18Are you saying we're lost, Ensign?
00:00:21That... depends what you mean by "lost," sir.
00:00:24"Lost," as in you still can't get a fix on our position.
00:00:28I'm sorry, sir.
00:00:30Try hailing Voyager again.
00:00:34No response. We must still be out of com range.
00:00:37Then we'll just have to navigate the old-fashioned way-- engage optical scanners.
00:00:41Aye, sir.
00:00:45I'm picking up an asteroid field at coordinates 113 mark 7.
00:00:50Record it.
00:00:53Uh, sir?
00:00:55That asteroid field?
00:00:56It's the same one we passed two hours ago.
00:01:00( sighs ): Great.
00:01:03We're not only lost, we're flying in circles.
00:01:05( console beeping )
00:01:07It's a Federation hailing beacon-- originating bearing 309 mark 4.
00:01:12It's Voyager.
00:01:14Well... at least someone knows where we are.
00:01:18Setting a course.
00:01:25The signal's coming from the planet's surface.
00:01:28Is it possible Voyager's landed?
00:01:29Sensor readings are sketchy.
00:01:31I'm detecting about 80,000 humanoid life signs on the western continent, some rudimentary structures and technology, but no energy signature big enough to be a starship.
00:01:41( console beeping )
00:01:43I'm getting another hail.
00:01:44The signal's very weak... and it's definitely not being sent by Voyager.
00:01:48Try adjusting the bandwidth.
00:01:50FEMALE ( distorted): ...Colony to Federation vessel.
00:01:53We need your help, urgently.
00:01:54This is Commander Chakotay of the Starship Voyager.
00:01:56Please identify yourself.
00:01:58( distorted ): I'm not reading you.
00:02:00Federation vessel, please respond to this...
00:02:02We lost them, sir.
00:02:04They've identified us as a Federation ship.
00:02:06Who would know that?
00:02:08Whoever they are, they're asking for our help.
00:02:09Launch a message buoy letting Voyager know we've landed in response to a distress call.
00:02:14( buoy whooshing )
00:02:24This place looks like a war zone.
00:02:29I can't pinpoint the source of the transmission.
00:02:36Commander.
00:04:29I'm Commander Chakotay of the Starship Voyager.
00:04:33We're responding to a distress call.
00:04:35We're looking for whoever it was that asked for our help.
00:04:39Commander!
00:04:53( grunts )
00:05:01( grunting )
00:05:11( grunting )
00:05:13( weapon powering up )
00:05:18( gasping groan )
00:05:23( both grunting )
00:05:26Come on!
00:05:29Take him inside.
00:05:35( groaning quietly )
00:05:44( groans )
00:05:47FEMALE: I'd lie still if I were you.
00:05:50You've got a nasty head injury.
00:05:53You're human.
00:05:55My name's Riley Frazier.
00:05:58What's yours, Commander?
00:05:59Why did you attack us?
00:06:00Those weren't my people.
00:06:03I'm the one who sent the distress call.
00:06:06We rescued you.
00:06:07What did you do with Kaplan?
00:06:09Your Ensign.
00:06:10She didn't make it.
00:06:14I'm sorry.
00:06:18I've got to get back to my shuttle.
00:06:20Your shuttle isn't there anymore.
00:06:24The people who attacked you have already pulled it apart.
00:06:29Relax, Commander.
00:06:31I'm here to help you.
00:06:34How did...?
00:06:36How did I get here?
00:06:38I could ask you the same question.
00:06:40I was pretty surprised when I picked up a Federation ship out there-- not that I wasn't happy about it.
00:06:47It's a long story.
00:06:49Why don't you go first?
00:06:53Seven or eight years ago...
00:06:54I was working as a Science Officer on a vessel in the Bolian sector.
00:06:58We were attacked without warning by aliens.
00:07:00They overpowered us in minutes, and those of us who survived were put in some kind of stasis.
00:07:07The next thing we knew, we were here on this planet.
00:07:10It didn't take too many hours of stargazing to realize we weren't in the Alpha Quadrant any longer.
00:07:15There are other humans here?
00:07:17Three that I know of besides me, what was left of my crew, along with some Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, and dozens of other species I'd never seen before.
00:07:27And the ones that put you in stasis?
00:07:30I don't know.
00:07:31They must have had some kind of colony here at some time because of the ruined buildings and equipment they left scattered around.
00:07:40We've never seen them again.
00:07:42Everyone here has pretty much the same story.
00:07:44They were just grabbed from wherever they happened to be and dumped.
00:07:49Why did those people kill Kaplan?
00:07:52We were no threat to them.
00:07:54There are dozens of different races on this planet, all of whom were brought here against their will.
00:07:58Many of them are suspicious of other species.
00:08:02It's not exactly a United Federation around here, if you know what I mean.
00:08:06So those kind of attacks-- they go on all the time.
00:08:10Resources are pretty limited.
00:08:12It didn't take long for the fighting to start.
00:08:15First, a group of Klingons attacked the Cardassians.
00:08:19Then the Farn raided the Parein; eventually things just got out of hand, and now it's anarchy.
00:08:25But some of us, a few hundred or so, we've tried to make the best of it.
00:08:30We've established a cooperative-- sharing work and whatever provisions we have.
00:08:37I've got to contact my ship.
00:08:39The raiders destroyed the communications array.
00:08:42It'll take days to fix it.
00:08:44I can help you.
00:08:48( grunts )
00:08:49Our medic examined you.
00:08:51You suffered serious neural trauma.
00:08:53You're staying put. And that's an order, Commander.
00:09:02Captain's Log, Stardate 50622.4.
00:09:06While Commander Chakotay
00:09:08scouts for a faster route through the Nekrit Expanse,
00:09:10we are continuing our month-long journey
00:09:12through the sparsely populated region.
00:09:15You know, they ought to rename this place the "negative expanse."
00:09:18We haven't run across anything interesting for days.
00:09:21If you're bored, Mr. Paris,
00:09:23I'm sure I can find something else for you to do.
00:09:25The warp plasma filters are due for a thorough cleaning.
00:09:29Now that you mention it, Captain,
00:09:31I find this region of space a real navigational challenge.
00:09:36( console beeping )
00:09:38I believe I may have found something else to pique Mr. Paris's interest, Captain.
00:09:41It's an unidentified ship on long-range sensors.
00:09:43What sort of ship?
00:09:45Sensor readings are very limited, but the vessel appears to be stopped directly in our current flight path.
00:09:49Harry, send a standard greeting.
00:09:52Aye, Captain.
00:09:52( console beeping )
00:09:54They're not responding.
00:09:56Try retransmitting the hail on wide-band subspace.
00:09:58Still no response.
00:10:00We are entering visual range.
00:10:01On screen.
00:10:05KIM: The Borg.
00:10:06Red Alert.
00:10:14All stop. Shields to maximum.
00:10:16Stand by all weapons.
00:10:17Tuvok, are they scanning us?
00:10:18Curious.
00:10:20None of the Borg systems appears to be operational.
00:10:22KIM: He's right. They're adrift.
00:10:24Maybe they're trying to lull us into a false sense of security.
00:10:27That would not be consistent with typical Borg tactics.
00:10:30I want to try a multiphasic scan.
00:10:32Tom, stand by to get us out of here in case they react.
00:10:34Aye, Captain.
00:10:35Proceed, Mr. Kim.
00:10:37I'm not picking up any active energy signatures.
00:10:41And no life signs.
00:10:43Well, that's a relief.
00:10:44Perhaps. However, we should avoid complacency.
00:10:47The Borg are known to retrieve their damaged technology.
00:10:50It is quite possible we will encounter additional Borg vessels which are fully manned and powered.
00:10:55That's exactly why we're going to board that ship.
00:10:59Captain?
00:11:01This is a rare opportunity to learn as much as we can about Borg technology.
00:11:04I might be able to get one of their data nodes running and find out what disabled their ship.
00:11:08If we're lucky, we may find a weakness we can use against them, in case we run into one of their fully manned and powered ships.
00:11:16Tuvok, assemble an away team. Tom...
00:11:18Yes, Captain.
00:11:20Take us into transporter range.
00:11:26We grow all our own food in a cooperative garden.
00:11:29It's delicious.
00:11:30Sorry there's no meat.
00:11:31No problem.
00:11:32I'm a vegetarian.
00:11:33Really?
00:11:35I have recurring dreams about my mother's famous Texas barbecue.
00:11:40So, your journey home-- how much longer do you expect it'll take you?
00:11:45About 67 years, provided we don't find a wormhole or some other faster way of getting back.
00:11:54Haven't you ever thought about finding some nice M-Class planet and putting down roots?
00:11:58We'd be missing an incredible opportunity to explore unknown space.
00:12:02Besides, we've made a good life for ourselves on Voyager.
00:12:05I'm sure Captain Janeway would be amenable to take as many of your people with us as we can accommodate.
00:12:11Take us with you?
00:12:12I assumed that's why you sent the distress call.
00:12:15You misunderstood. We want to stay.
00:12:18But you were brought here against your will.
00:12:20You just said how dangerous it is.
00:12:22For better or worse, this place has become our home.
00:12:26The people in the cooperative... they're like my ancestors--
00:12:30Texas homesteaders.
00:12:31I can understand that, but...
00:12:32We have a deep connection to one another that I've never felt before, not even with members of my own family.
00:12:39I guess it's because of what we've all gone through together.
00:12:42What about those unfriendly neighbors of yours?
00:12:44We've been able to bring a few of them into our group.
00:12:48But you're right, they're a problem.
00:12:50( groaning quietly )
00:12:52That's why we want your help.
00:12:54Security upgrades, medical supplies, maybe some weapons.
00:12:59We're creating a society here-- one that's based on tolerance, shared responsibility, and mutual respect that people like you and I were raised to believe in.
00:13:08We're not about to give it up just because it's difficult.
00:13:13I'd better get back to work on the communications array.
00:13:17I'll come with you.
00:13:18No!
00:13:20You're still in no shape to fight, if we're attacked.
00:13:27I'll be back to check on you soon.
00:13:39( console beeping )
00:13:42( hatch clanks and slides open)
00:13:45( hatch slides closed )
00:13:58TORRES: It's like a ghost ship.
00:14:01TUVOK: Allowing yourself to become apprehensive can only be counterproductive, Lieutenant.
00:14:06I'm not being apprehensive, Tuvok.
00:14:09I'm just nervous as hell.
00:14:17( tricorder beeping )
00:14:26( beeping louder )
00:14:29This is one of the access nodes.
00:14:31If we can get it operational,
00:14:32I should be able to tap into the main data systems.
00:14:38Tuvok... there should be a compatible micro-power conduit somewhere in that module.
00:14:44Connect it to this generator.
00:15:04Lieutenant.
00:15:07( tricorder beeping )
00:15:11It's dead.
00:15:14TUVOK: As far as we can tell, all activity on the Borg ship ceased abruptly five years ago.
00:15:19Our scans have detected 1,100 corpses.
00:15:22TUVOK: We located a breached section of the vessel where the spatial vacuum preserved several of the bodies perfectly. We brought one aboard.
00:15:29We're hoping that an autopsy might give us some clue as to what killed them.
00:15:32The question is, why have the Borg left one of their ships and all its technology adrift in space for anyone to find?
00:15:39It is possible that the deactivation of the ship and its systems severed the link with the rest of the collective.
00:15:45But what caused the shutdown in the first place?
00:15:47It could've been some kind of natural disaster... or...
00:15:52Or what?
00:15:55Maybe the Borg were defeated by an enemy even more powerful than they were.
00:16:03Tuvok, continue scanning for any Borg vessels in the vicinity, as well as any other ships that might be more powerful.
00:16:11B'Elanna, you and the Doctor get started on that autopsy.
00:16:14In the meantime, I think it would be a good idea to rendezvous with Commander Chakotay a little ahead of schedule, and let him know we've run into some old friends.
00:16:34( groans quietly )
00:16:49( beeping )
00:17:01Hello? Anybody there?
00:17:07Riley?
00:17:14( beeping )
00:17:19( hatch clanks and slides )
00:17:26( clanking and whirring )
00:17:37( indistinct conversation )
00:17:53( clanking and whirring continues )
00:18:07( instrument whirring )
00:18:11( clattering )
00:18:18Riley?
00:18:20( gasps )
00:18:29What are you?
00:18:30Are you Borg?
00:18:32We were Borg.
00:18:34You mean you weren't just kidnapped, you were assimilated by the collective.
00:18:38At Wolf 359.
00:18:40I was a Science Officer aboard the Roosevelt.
00:18:42But five years ago, our cube was damaged by an electrokinetic storm.
00:18:46The next thing we knew, our link to the collective was severed.
00:18:50We were free.
00:18:51We could think for ourselves again, remember our names, where we'd come from.
00:18:55It was like waking up from a long nightmare.
00:18:56We took what we thought we could use, and transported ourselves here.
00:19:00Everything was new again-- the sounds of our own voices, forgotten memories, the taste of food.
00:19:05Our original skin pigmentation began to come back.
00:19:07Many of us were able to remove our Borg appendages.
00:19:09I was even lucky enough to get a prosthetic arm Orum created, using Borg replication equipment.
00:19:15In spite of how little we had, it was a joyous, hopeful time. And then?
00:19:19After the euphoria wore off, people started looking around, and found they were living among other cultures they didn't understand-- or worse, species they'd been taught to hate.
00:19:30They turned against one another.
00:19:31Things became chaotic.
00:19:33The fighting, the raids...
00:19:34But we're not all like that.
00:19:36Everything I told you about forming a cooperative, building a new society-- I meant it.
00:19:40Riley's telling the truth, Commander Chakotay.
00:19:43Look at me-- I was Romulan.
00:19:45I was taught to hate humans, the Federation-- but Riley and I are friends now.
00:19:49I'm part of the cooperative.
00:19:51Orum's our medic. He's the one who examined you.
00:19:53Why didn't you tell me all this in the first place?
00:19:55I know how people feel about the Borg, and they're right.
00:19:59We did terrible things.
00:20:01You'd been assimilated.
00:20:02You weren't in control of your actions.
00:20:04Then you'll still help us?
00:20:10I think, right now, it's Commander Chakotay who needs our help.
00:20:14Captain's Log, supplemental.
00:20:17We've detected a message buoy
00:20:18launched from Chakotay's shuttle
00:20:21and are heading toward it.
00:20:22The autopsy of the Borg corpse is underway.
00:20:29I must say, there's nothing like the vacuum of space for preserving a handsome corpse.
00:20:39Hmm...
00:20:41Subject's abdominal organs are unremarkable.
00:20:44Pulmonary system exhibits evidence of extensive alveolar damage, as well as a slight swelling consistent with exposure to space.
00:20:52Ah...
00:20:53In addition, there are signs of severe cardiac depolarization.
00:20:57Sounds like he was electrocuted.
00:20:59Very good, Kes.
00:21:00That would support our theory about what happened aboard their ship.
00:21:04We think that their main power conduits were overloaded by a massive electro-mechanical discharge.
00:21:08Hmm... this is intriguing.
00:21:12What do you think that is?
00:21:14It may be some sort of axonal amplifier.
00:21:16Kes, hand me a cortical probe.
00:21:28( whirring )
00:21:29( shouts )
00:21:32Shut it down!
00:21:38( whirring stops )
00:21:43What the hell happened?
00:21:45Is it still alive?
00:21:47Of course not. Apparently I inadvertently activated a backup neuroelectric power cell.
00:21:55The response was purely autonomic.
00:21:56There's no reason for concern.
00:21:58I wouldn't be so sure about that.
00:22:00What do you mean?
00:22:02That "autonomic response" caused this drone to reset back to its original programming.
00:22:07If the rest of those corpses somehow reactivate-- we'd have a major problem on our hands.
00:22:19I'm afraid he's getting worse.
00:22:21There must be something we can do for him.
00:22:23You know better than anyone how limited our medical resources are.
00:22:27As far as I'm concerned, there is only one option.
00:22:31Would it be safe?
00:22:34Would... what be safe?
00:22:39As I'm sure you're aware, the Borg collective consciousness is extremely powerful.
00:22:44It allowed us to transfer information instantaneously-- to think with one mind.
00:22:49But what you may not be aware of is the link also has inherent medical applications.
00:22:55M-m-medical applications?
00:22:59We were connected by a continuous neuroelectric field that was capable of regenerating the damaged components of an injured Borg.
00:23:07Think of it as a subspace transfusion.
00:23:09Only instead of one person giving blood, there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of donors simultaneously transmitting neuroelectric energy to whoever needed it.
00:23:19This process was often successful in healing both organic and inorganic body parts.
00:23:25This is all... very fascinating, but I don't see how it helps me.
00:23:30We still have Borg neural processors implanted in our nervous systems.
00:23:34Removing them would've killed us.
00:23:37I see.
00:23:38Using a portable neuro-transponder, we have the ability to relink our brain patterns.
00:23:43I thought you said the link was severed.
00:23:46It was.
00:23:47But we can reinitiate it among a small group, for a short time.
00:23:50We could generate a neuroelectric field that could heal your injuries.
00:23:55You want to... hook up my mind to some... Borg collective?
00:24:00No, no, that's not it at all. We'd be in complete control.
00:24:03You'd simply be linked, for a limited period of time, to Riley, me, and a few of the others in our group willing to help you.
00:24:10I'm not letting anyone implant some neural processor in my brain.
00:24:15That wouldn't be necessary.
00:24:16I'd simply attach a small neuro-transceiver to the base of your skull.
00:24:20We'd initiate the link, and the transceiver could be removed as soon as the procedure was over.
00:24:25I assure you, other than repairing neural tissue, there would be no lasting effects.
00:24:29Thanks... but I don't think so.
00:24:34I-I can see why you're skeptical.
00:24:37I would be, too.
00:24:39Look around you-- Orum and I, the others-- we're individuals.
00:24:43We have distinct personalities.
00:24:45We're not about to turn you into some kind of automaton.
00:24:50I'll take my chances and wait for Voyager.
00:24:52I'm afraid that help may come too late, Commander.
00:24:55If we don't do something to slow the neural degradation immediately... you will die.
00:25:12Chakotay... you have to make a decision.
00:25:18Any sign of Voyager? No.
00:25:20I can't change who we are.
00:25:22I wasn't truthful with you before, and I'm sorry, but please believe me when I tell you we only want to help you.
00:25:29Orum will take every precaution.
00:25:31Please?
00:25:33At least let us try and save you.
00:25:35It's either that or the happy hunting grounds, huh?
00:25:39Okay, then?
00:25:54( deep electronic hum )
00:25:58This is the neuro-transceiver.
00:26:05( electronic whirring )
00:26:18RILEY: Don't be afraid, Chakotay.
00:26:20We're here to help you.
00:26:22ALL: Open your mind to our thoughts,
00:26:23and concentrate on getting well.
00:26:26Hear our voices.
00:26:29Open your mind to our thoughts.
00:26:31Our collective strength can heal you.
00:26:34You're safe with us.
00:26:36Feel the connection.
00:26:38We're with you.
00:26:39See who we are.
00:26:41Know us.
00:26:42You're not alone.
00:26:44Our strength is your strength.
00:26:46We can overcome your pain.
00:26:49We welcome you into our thoughts.
00:26:52There's nothing to fear.
00:26:53We won't let you die.
00:26:55We're all one circle-- no beginning, no end.
00:27:03( girl giggling )
00:27:16GIRL: Grandpa!
00:27:22( girl laughing, birds chirping )
00:27:35How do you feel?
00:27:38Don't worry. It's gone.
00:27:42It looks like the treatment worked.
00:27:44Orum says the degraded tissue has shown marked improvement.
00:27:49( groaning )
00:27:52It was incredible.
00:27:56I know.
00:28:00I heard all of you-- your thoughts inside my head-- as if they were my thoughts.
00:28:08And I could see myself... through your eyes.
00:28:12Then you must have caught me staring.
00:28:16I saw... faces... planets. What were they?
00:28:22Images from the minds of the people who linked with you.
00:28:27Members of their families, their homes...
00:28:30I know things about all of them... about you.
00:28:38You like bluebonnets.
00:28:40My favorite flower.
00:28:41You used to pick them back home in Texas with a man who carried a walking stick.
00:28:48My grandfather.
00:28:50I know so much about you.
00:28:52We shared a very rare experience.
00:29:03I felt that.
00:29:09What about this?
00:29:14It's a residual effect from the link.
00:29:19How long will it last?
00:29:22An hour.
00:29:24Maybe two.
00:29:26Long enough.
00:29:29Can you still hear what I'm thinking?
00:29:32Yes.
00:29:33Then you know I want to be closer to you.
00:29:37I want us to know everything about each other.
00:29:42I want you to feel everything I feel.
00:30:02According to the buoy,
00:30:03Commander Chakotay and Ensign Kaplan landed on the surface in response to a distress call three days ago.
00:30:08Can you locate the shuttle?
00:30:09( console beeping )
00:30:10There is no sign of it anywhere on the planet.
00:30:13What about their combadges?
00:30:15I'm only picking up one signal.
00:30:16It's in a heavily populated region.
00:30:18Signal's very weak.
00:30:20Voyager to Commander Chakotay.
00:30:22Do you read?
00:30:24Ensign Kaplan, this is Captain Janeway.
00:30:26Come in.
00:30:27Electrodynamic turbulence from the nebula is interfering with the transmission.
00:30:30It's going to take me a while to clear it up.
00:30:39CHAKOTAY: Hand me that hyper-spanner.
00:30:46There. That should at least get the short-range transmitters operational.
00:30:51Now, if we can get the signal amplifiers online.
00:30:54I never would've figured you to be quite so handy with a circuitry panel.
00:30:58I guess you haven't learned everything about me, have you?
00:31:01Commander, I just wanted to say how grateful to you we all are.
00:31:05You're the ones who saved my life.
00:31:07But you've added so much to the cooperative-- a renewed sense of hope, an infusion of energy.
00:31:13You have no idea how invigorating it was to have a new mind in the link, even if it was only for a short time.
00:31:19There have been so few of us for so long, I...
00:31:23Well, I'll let you two get back to work.
00:31:31I was so resistant to being linked.
00:31:33Now I'm almost sorry it's over.
00:31:36I know.
00:31:39Last night, when we were still connected,
00:31:41I realized what it is you really want from us.
00:31:44It's more than just supplies and security upgrades.
00:31:48That's right.
00:31:50It's a pretty radical concept.
00:31:51Sometimes radical problems require radical solutions.
00:31:54ORUM: Riley! Commander Chakotay!
00:31:57We've detected a ship in orbit. It must be Voyager.
00:32:00I hope you'll at least discuss our idea with your Captain.
00:32:04Why don't you tell her about it yourself?
00:32:11We've given it a great deal of thought, and we believe the solution to our problem is to reestablish the neural link among all the former Borg living on the planet.
00:32:20You can't be serious.
00:32:22I know it sounds extreme, Captain, but I think you should hear her out.
00:32:26All right.
00:32:29If you'll think about it, Captain, when we were linked, we had no ethnic conflict.
00:32:33There was no crime, no hunger, no health problems.
00:32:37We lived as one harmonious family.
00:32:39With all due respect, Dr. Frazier, you were "one harmonious family" bent on the violent assimilation of innocent cultures.
00:32:47But we're not Borg anymore, and we've learned from our past.
00:32:51All we want to do is to take the one good thing that existed in the midst of all that horror-- our unique ability to cooperate and problem-solve-- and use it to create a safe and productive community.
00:33:04Tell me how, exactly.
00:33:07The neuro-transponder we've built is only powerful enough to link a small group of people, like the one that helped heal
00:33:15Chakotay's wounds.
00:33:16In any case, the effect is only temporary.
00:33:18In order to reconnect the entire population permanently, we'd need a much bigger neuroelectric field generator.
00:33:25I'm afraid we don't have anything like that.
00:33:27But the Borg cube does.
00:33:29What they're asking us to do is reactivate that ship's neuroelectric generator and redirect it toward the planet.
00:33:38They want us to reactivate... a Borg ship?
00:33:43Not the whole ship, just the generator.
00:33:45And it only needs to be operational for a few minutes, in order to reactivate the link.
00:33:50There's no telling what would happen if we turned on one of those generators, even for an instant.
00:33:53For all we know, it would attract other Borg vessels.
00:33:56Captain, I can assure you, we'd take every precaution.
00:34:02Dr. Frazier, I admire your tenacity.
00:34:05I respect your courage.
00:34:09I'll give you medical supplies.
00:34:11I'll assist you with upgrading your security.
00:34:13I'll even take some of you with us, if you want to come.
00:34:17But as to what you're proposing,
00:34:18I have to tell you, I'm extremely skeptical.
00:34:21In fairness, however,
00:34:24I will give it some further thought.
00:34:27Thank you.
00:34:37What do you think?
00:34:39If you're asking me whether or not she's sincere,
00:34:42I have to say yes.
00:34:48You got to know them very well?
00:34:50That's an understatement.
00:34:52I heard their thoughts, felt their feelings, saw through their eyes.
00:35:01And, in all the time you were linked, you never sensed anything negative-- no hidden agenda, no destructive intent?
00:35:07No.
00:35:10Bottom line:
00:35:12Do you think we should do what they're asking?
00:35:19I really care about what happens to these people.
00:35:24So, in my heart, I'd like to do everything we can to help them.
00:35:29But, if I were sitting in your chair,
00:35:32I'd have to take other considerations into account.
00:35:40Not only would it mean imposing a choice on thousands of people who had no voice in the decision, but it would also be taking a terrible risk.
00:35:48Helping to create a new collective?
00:35:51Who knows what the repercussions might be?
00:36:00I'll let Riley know.
00:36:09( laughing )
00:36:12I'm afraid her decision was final.
00:36:14I wish it weren't, but I expected as much.
00:36:17What about the raiders?
00:36:19How long do you think you can hold out against them?
00:36:22Well, we'll just have to do the best we can.
00:36:24Who knows? Maybe we'll find some other way to get to the cube and reinitiate the link.
00:36:29Come with us. Chakotay...
00:36:31We could replicate some Texas barbecue.
00:36:33I'm sure it won't compare to your mother's, but I think it--
00:36:35Don't think it's not tempting, but my place is here.
00:36:39I know you understand.
00:36:42I've never understood anyone better in my life.
00:36:48Well, we're finished laying in the supplies.
00:36:51Thank you, Neelix.
00:36:54Uh, we'd better get going.
00:37:18You okay?
00:37:25What you need is a good thrashing on the hoverball court to take your mind off things.
00:37:31You're on.
00:37:33Good. I'll reserve some holodeck time as soon as we're back.
00:37:37COLLECTIVE VOICES: Chakotay, can you hear us?
00:37:43Did you say something?
00:37:45No.
00:37:47Are you getting a com transmission?
00:37:50No. Why?
00:37:53Must've been my imagination.
00:37:57You sure you're okay?
00:38:00I'm fine.
00:38:04Chakotay, we need your help.
00:38:09Chakotay?
00:38:10We need your help.
00:38:12I'm going to tell the Doctor he needs to take a look at you as soon as we're back.
00:38:17Torres to Sick Bay.
00:38:18Don't do that.
00:38:21Chakotay, give me the phaser.
00:38:23( groans )
00:38:37Captain, Commander Chakotay's shuttle has changed course.
00:38:40Try hailing them.
00:38:41( console beeping ) No response.
00:38:43They are increasing speed to maximum impulse.
00:38:46Tom, lay in a pursuit course.
00:38:48Tell Neelix we'll rendezvous with his shuttle later.
00:38:58COLLECTIVE VOICES: Chakotay,
00:39:00transport to module 47 omega.
00:39:04The bunker is under attack.
00:39:0647 omega.
00:39:08Section nine, mark coordinates.
00:39:10We are under attack.
00:39:12Nine alpha alpha.
00:39:14We must hurry.
00:39:15The bunker is under attack.
00:39:1747 omega.
00:39:18Section 9.
00:39:19Mark coordinates.
00:39:21We are under attack.
00:39:22( grunting with effort )
00:39:32Proceed to interlink console three beta six.
00:39:36Hear our thoughts.
00:39:38Our thoughts are one.
00:39:39Interlink three beta six.
00:39:41Proceed to interlink console three beta six.
00:39:45Hear our thoughts.
00:40:06TUVOK: Check that area out.
00:40:14TUVOK: This way.
00:40:29COLLECTIVE VOICES: Lower right panel,
00:40:31attach power conduit 166.
00:40:34Hurry.
00:40:35Pathway pi two.
00:40:36We are under attack.
00:40:38Pathway pi two.
00:40:50Activate the neuroelectric generator.
00:40:53Quickly.
00:40:54Power circuit mechanism.
00:40:56Activate the generator.
00:40:58Help us. We must activate the neuroelectric generator now.
00:41:02Chakotay, need your help.
00:41:04Losing time.
00:41:06Commander, take your hand away from that console, or I will be forced to fire.
00:41:12You must not let them stop you.
00:41:14You must do this.
00:41:17( grunts )
00:41:21You must move power circuit mechanism alpha
00:41:23to position one.
00:41:25( console beeping )
00:41:28( powering up )
00:41:30( deep humming )
00:41:36Hear our voices. We welcome you into our thoughts.
00:41:41Feel the connection.
00:41:43( rumbling )
00:41:46( clicking and whirring )
00:42:03Mr. Kim.
00:42:11Voyager, emergency beam-out.
00:42:18Chakotay, B'Elanna and the away team are all back, and we've tractored in the shuttle.
00:42:23Take us out of here slowly.
00:42:25( console beeping )
00:42:28Captain, the Borg ship is powering weapons.
00:42:30Mr. McKenzie, full power to the shields.
00:42:32Arm all phaser banks and prepare to fire.
00:42:34KIM: Captain, the Borg ship has initiated a self-destruct sequence.
00:42:38It'll go in three seconds.
00:42:40Get us out of here.
00:42:49Report.
00:42:50KIM: Shields are holding.
00:42:52No injuries or hull damage.
00:42:54What the hell happened back there?
00:42:56KIM: Audio transmission, Captain.
00:42:58From the planet's surface.
00:42:59Let's hear it.
00:43:03COLLECTIVE VOICES: We are the new cooperative.
00:43:04We have destroyed the Borg cube.
00:43:07We regret that we forced Commander Chakotay
00:43:10to assist us,
00:43:12but it was necessary for our survival.
00:43:15His link with the cooperative has now been severed.
00:43:19Our lasting gratitude.
00:43:21( transmission ends )
00:43:29His neuropeptide levels have returned to normal.
00:43:31And there are no residual traces of the link?
00:43:34None.
00:43:35How were they able to reestablish the connection?
00:43:37My best guess is that the residual neuropeptides heightened his telepathic receptivity.
00:43:41I thought their limited equipment made it impossible for them to form the link over great distances.
00:43:47Apparently, once they repaired their communications array, they were able to use it to amplify the signal from their neural transponder.
00:43:53Would you two please excuse us?
00:44:02I don't know what to say, except... I'm sorry.
00:44:05Based on what the Doctor's told us, it's clear you were acting against your will.
00:44:10Maybe so, but somehow that doesn't make me feel any better.
00:44:15I helped them repair their communications array, and I told you they were sincere.
00:44:20Helping others, Chakotay-- that's part of who you are.
00:44:23Given everything you believe in,
00:44:25I don't see how you could've behaved differently.
00:44:28But I couldn't have been more wrong about them, could I?
00:44:32I don't know.
00:44:33I'm not saying I'm happy about what happened.
00:44:36But so far, they haven't acted like typical Borg.
00:44:40They saved us from that cube, and they let you go.
00:44:43But they didn't hesitate to impose their collective will on me when it served their interests, did they?
00:44:48No, they didn't.
00:44:50I wonder how long their ideals will last in the face of that kind of power?
