Scorpion: Part 1
00:00:01( ominous theme playing )
00:00:03COLLECTIVE: We are the Borg.
00:00:05Existence as you know it is over.
00:00:07We will add your biological
00:00:09and technological distinctiveness to our own.
00:00:12Resistance is... ( electronic crackling )
00:00:23( theme music playing )
00:02:08MALE: The cardinal...is a thief.
00:02:12I delivered two portraits of his mindless nephew more than three months ago to be depicted in the heroic mode of an Hercules or an Achilles.
00:02:23So specified our contract.
00:02:25I complied... making that young fool of a nephew look far more heroic than nature ever intended, an act on my part far greater than anything accomplished by Hercules or Achilles.
00:02:39And what have I, the divine Leonardo da Vinci, received in payment?
00:02:43The cardinal's eternal gratitude?
00:02:45Ha-ha! Esatto!
00:02:47In other words, signorina... less than nothing.
00:02:51All the more reason why you should accept my proposal.
00:02:54Money is beside the point, signo-- Catarina, is it?
00:02:58Yes. I'm only asking for a corner, one bench--
00:03:02A place to work on my own projects... paintings, sculptures.
00:03:06Just being here in your company is inspiring to me.
00:03:11Flattery, Catarina, is also beside the point.
00:03:14Besides, I prefer my solitude. Scusami.
00:03:18( machinery whirring )
00:03:21( laughs )
00:03:22Meraviglioso.
00:03:24What will you call it?
00:03:26"The Arm of Hephaestus."
00:03:28The god of the forge.
00:03:30Every blacksmith who has ever swung a hammer will thank me for this creation.
00:03:35Someone once said:
00:03:36"All invention is but an extension of the body of man."
00:03:42Do not think that just because I have enjoyed your visit today, that I am prepared to turn my workshop into a traveler's inn.
00:03:52Che cazzo!
00:03:53Here, let me help you.
00:03:55You will get your hands covered in goose grease.
00:03:58It's good for the skin.
00:04:02DA VINCI: Let us see if we can find his big brother.
00:04:05Hopefully, he will be stronger.
00:04:11( church bells ringing )
00:04:21This looks like a flying machine.
00:04:24I thought that because my imagination took flight so easily, my body could do the same.
00:04:28I was wrong.
00:04:31It's this... flapping approach.
00:04:34You've designed your machine to mimic the way a bat or a sparrow flies.
00:04:39Yes, yes. So?
00:04:42So what if you based it... on the hawk instead?
00:04:49The hawk.
00:04:52A creature that glides through the air.
00:04:56Esatto.
00:05:02We will design a new machine... and, you, Catarina, will help me fly it.
00:05:08I'll need someplace to work.
00:05:10A corner? One workbench?
00:05:13That will be fine.
00:05:14( laughing ) Ten scudi a week, and you provide your own materials.
00:05:18Seven... and I might need to borrow a few things on occasion.
00:05:22Then we have an agreement. ( com-link beeps )
00:05:24CHAKOTAY: Chakotay to Janeway.
00:05:25Go ahead.
00:05:26Captain, we need you in Engineering.
00:05:28There's something here you should see.
00:05:29On my way.
00:05:31Computer, end program.
00:05:35What have you got?
00:05:36CHAKOTAY: Some bad news.
00:05:38The long-range probe we sent out two months ago has stopped transmitting.
00:05:41I thought it was a problem with the communications grid, then I cleared up the last few seconds of telemetry.
00:05:45Take a look at this. ( console beeping )
00:05:54This could be it, Captain.
00:05:58Borg space.
00:06:00We don't know exactly how many vessels are out there, but their space appears to be vast.
00:06:06It includes thousands of solar systems-- all Borg.
00:06:10We are, no doubt, entering the heart of their territory.
00:06:13There's no going around it.
00:06:15But there may be a way through it.
00:06:20Before the probe was disabled, it picked up a narrow corridor of space devoid of Borg activity.
00:06:27We've nicknamed it "The Northwest Passage."
00:06:30Unfortunately, the passage is filled with intense gravimetric distortions probably caused by a string of quantum singularities.
00:06:37Better to ride the rapids than face the hive.
00:06:39Exactly. We're going to set a course for that corridor and go into full tactical alert.
00:06:44Where do we stand with weapons?
00:06:46I have reprogrammed the phaser banks to a rotating modulation, but I suspect the Borg will adapt quickly.
00:06:51We can use every edge. Ensign?
00:06:53I've already configured the long-range sensors to scan for transwarp signatures-- an early-warning system.
00:06:59Good work.
00:07:00Doctor, how are you coming on the medical front?
00:07:02I've analyzed every square millimeter of the Borg corpse we recovered three months ago.
00:07:06I'm closer to understanding how their assimilation technology works, and I might be able to create some sort of medical defense.
00:07:13Redouble your efforts.
00:07:14This is your top priority.
00:07:15Neelix, I doubt we can resupply the ship any time soon.
00:07:19No problem, sir.
00:07:20I'm working on a plan to extend our food and replicator rations.
00:07:23We have to act fast.
00:07:26The Borg have captured one of our probes.
00:07:29They know we're out here.
00:07:30We'll do everything in our power to avoid a direct confrontation, but, if and when we do engage the Borg,
00:07:37I'm confident that we'll be ready.
00:07:40I have faith in each and every one of you.
00:07:45Let's do it.
00:07:47( dramatic theme playing )
00:07:49( people chattering orders indistinctly )
00:07:57Coming through.
00:08:00Open!
00:08:07I want to cut down the time it takes to seal off the decks.
00:08:09In case we take on some uninvited guests.
00:08:11Exactly. And I want to increase the magnitude of the force fields.
00:08:16These injection tubules are the first step in the Borg assimilation process.
00:08:20Once inside the skin, they release a series of nanoprobes into the bloodstream.
00:08:25Maybe we can develop some type of protective shielding against them.
00:08:29Unlikely.
00:08:30The tubules are capable of penetrating any known alloy or energy field... which means our battle must be waged inside the body itself.
00:08:41The first tissue to be attacked by the nanoprobes is the victim's blood.
00:08:45Assimilation is almost instantaneous.
00:08:47They take over the blood cell functions, like a virus.
00:08:50Which suggests to me that we should try to enhance the immune system.
00:08:53Create an "assimilation antibody," as it were.
00:08:56I doubt we can actually destroy the nanoprobes, but we might be able to slow them down.
00:09:02( PADD beeps ) Let's try a submicron dissection on the probes we've collected so far, see if we can discover the assimilation mechanism.
00:09:10( PADD continues beeping )
00:09:12( ominous theme playing )
00:09:17Kes, is something wrong?
00:09:21Kes.
00:09:23I saw Borg.
00:09:27You've had a telepathic experience?
00:09:29There were bodies... dozens of them dead.
00:09:42How's Kes? Unsettled and uncertain.
00:09:46Over the past two hours, she has experienced several telepathic visions about the death of Borg and the destruction of Voyager.
00:09:53Some sort of premonitions?
00:09:55Possibly.
00:09:56We can't just ignore her intuition, but I see no reason to alter our plan.
00:10:01Tuvok, I want you to keep an eye on her--
00:10:02Captain... long-range sensors are picking up transwarp signatures...
00:10:065.8 light-years distant... closing from behind.
00:10:10Red Alert.
00:10:11JANEWAY: Evasive maneuvers.
00:10:13( rumbling )
00:10:16What's happening? We've dropped out of warp.
00:10:19Bridge to Engineering. What's going on down there?
00:10:21TORRES: I'm not sure, Captain.
00:10:23Some kind of subspace turbulence is preventing us from creating a stable warp field.
00:10:27Turbulence is increasing.
00:10:28I'm reading two Borg vessels. Make that three.
00:10:31Four.
00:10:33No, five.
00:10:37Fifteen Borg vessels.
00:10:39Distance-- 2.1 light-years and closing.
00:10:42Shields to maximum. Stand by all weapons.
00:10:45They're in visual range.
00:10:46JANEWAY: On screen.
00:10:47( suspenseful theme playing )
00:10:51My God.
00:11:03Captain...
00:11:06KIM: I'm picking up a polaron beam.
00:11:09We're being scanned.
00:11:16Think good thoughts.
00:11:22The last cube has rejoined the others.
00:11:33Did we sustain any damage?
00:11:34KIM: No. Shields held.
00:11:37Warp engines are coming back on line.
00:11:38All primary systems are stable.
00:11:41Stand down Red Alert.
00:11:42Harry...maintain a long-range sensor lock on that Borg armada.
00:11:47They seemed to be in quite a hurry, didn't they?
00:11:49I'd like to know what they're up to.
00:11:51KIM: Yes, ma'am.
00:11:53JANEWAY: I'll take this near-miss as a good omen.
00:11:55Resume our course, Mr. Paris.
00:11:57If we needed any more evidence that we've entered Borg space,
00:12:00I think we just got it.
00:12:02I'll be in my ready room.
00:12:17( door chimes )
00:12:19Yes. Come in.
00:12:22We've just completed the latest sensor sweep.
00:12:25So far, so good. The Northwest Passage is still clear of Borg activity.
00:12:29I'd like to see a tactical update.
00:12:32According to my calculations, neither of us has eaten since last night.
00:12:37Join me for dinner?
00:12:40No, thanks. I'm not hungry.
00:12:41I've got a lot of work to do.
00:12:43I see.
00:12:44I've been looking through the personal log entries of all the Starfleet Captains who encountered the Borg.
00:12:50I've gone over every engagement, from the moment Q flung the Enterprise into the path of that first cube to the massacre at Wolf 359.
00:12:59Every battle, every skirmish, anything that might give me an insight into the mind of the Collective. And?
00:13:05In the words of Jean-Luc Picard...
00:13:09"In their Collective state,
00:13:11"the Borg are utterly without mercy,
00:13:14"driven by one will alone-- the will to conquer.
00:13:18They are beyond redemption, beyond reason."
00:13:23And then there's Captain Amasov of the Endeavor.
00:13:27"It is my opinion that the Borg are as close to pure evil as any race we've ever encountered..." ( chuckles )
00:13:33What's so funny?
00:13:35Uh, nothing. You're smiling.
00:13:37Obviously, I've said something amusing.
00:13:39You sounded just like Amasov.
00:13:42What?
00:13:43Just now, while you were reading his log, you were using his inflections.
00:13:46I did not. Yes, you were.
00:13:48And before that, you were doing a pretty good Picard.
00:13:50Was I?
00:13:52It's nothing to be ashamed about, echoing the greats.
00:13:56Ensign Hickman in Astrophysics does a passable Janeway.
00:14:01If we manage to survive the next few days,
00:14:03I'm going to have a little chat with Ensign Hickman.
00:14:05Imitating the Captain, huh?
00:14:07Surely that violates some kind of Starfleet protocol.
00:14:16This day was inevitable.
00:14:18We all knew it, and we've all tried to prepare ourselves for the challenge ahead.
00:14:27But at what point is the risk too great?
00:14:31At what point do we come about and retreat to friendly territory?
00:14:35Could the crew accept living out the rest of their lives in the Delta Quadrant?
00:14:40I keep looking to all these Captains, my comrades in arms.
00:14:44But the truth is...
00:14:46I'm alone.
00:14:48If that moment comes... we'll face it together, and we'll make the right decision.
00:14:54You're not alone, Kathryn.
00:14:58Hm.
00:15:00Three years ago, I didn't even know your name.
00:15:03Today, I can't imagine a day without you.
00:15:05( com-link beeps )
00:15:07TUVOK: Captain Janeway to the Bridge.
00:15:14JANEWAY: Gentlemen?
00:15:16Something strange is going on.
00:15:18The power signatures of those Borg vessels have terminated.
00:15:20All of them?
00:15:22They're dead in the water, about 5.2 light-years from here.
00:15:25Cause. Unknown.
00:15:28Mr. Paris...
00:15:30Captain?
00:15:32Set a course for their position, warp 2.
00:15:40We're approaching the ships.
00:15:42Slow to impulse.
00:15:43On screen.
00:15:45( computers beeping )
00:15:46( dramatic theme playing )
00:15:53Life signs.
00:15:55A few, but they're erratic.
00:15:57TUVOK: Captain,
00:15:59I'm detecting two residual weapon signatures in the debris.
00:16:02One is Borg.
00:16:05The other is of unknown origin.
00:16:09Who could do this to the Borg?
00:16:12( dramatic theme continues )
00:16:21Someone more powerful than the Borg?
00:16:23It's hard to imagine.
00:16:24KIM: But they did it--
00:16:25Fifteen cubes.
00:16:27We might have just found our ticket through Borg space-- An ally.
00:16:31Let's not jump to conclusions.
00:16:33Scan the vicinity for other vessels.
00:16:37There are none.
00:16:39Hold on.
00:16:40I'm picking up some sort of bio-readings.
00:16:42They're coming from the outer hull of one of the Borg ships. Let's see it.
00:16:49Magnify, Mr. Kim.
00:16:52KIM: It's definitely organic, but our sensors can't penetrate its surface.
00:16:56Send a standard greeting.
00:16:59No response.
00:17:00This could be a space-dwelling organism or a biological weapon.
00:17:04I'd like to know what kind of weapon could destroy the Borg.
00:17:07Can we beam it away from the ship?
00:17:08I can't get a lock on it.
00:17:10Tractor beam?
00:17:13No effect.
00:17:14KIM: Whatever that thing is, it's impervious to our technology.
00:17:19Tuvok... are you reading an atmosphere in the cube?
00:17:24TUVOK: Affirmative.
00:17:25Commander Chakotay.
00:17:30I want you to take an away team inside.
00:17:32Try to get a short-range scan of the bio-mass.
00:17:35There are still Borg life signs, but they're unstable.
00:17:38We'll keep an open com-link and an active transporter lock, and we'll pull you out of there at the first sign of trouble.
00:17:44Tuvok, Harry, you're with me.
00:17:48( door opens, closes )
00:17:59( ominous theme playing )
00:18:20This way.
00:18:24( electrical static, deep booming )
00:18:28( instrument whirring )
00:18:36TUVOK: Lower your phasers.
00:18:38If we don't appear threatening, they should ignore us.
00:18:41Looks like they're a little preoccupied.
00:18:49( loud, erratic whirring )
00:18:58( beeping )
00:19:09( electricity pops )
00:19:11( beeping continues )
00:19:15The alien bio-readings are getting stronger.
00:19:17We're close.
00:19:30Commander?
00:19:38TUVOK: Curious.
00:19:39That's not the word I had in mind.
00:19:41Those bodies are reminiscent of one of the premonitions Kes described.
00:19:45Didn't Kes say we were all going to die?
00:19:50Let's keep moving.
00:19:52( ominous theme continues )
00:20:03( air hissing )
00:20:07( electricity pops )
00:20:15( beeping continues )
00:20:24CHAKOTAY: It looks like the bio-mass dissolved right through the Borg hull.
00:20:27TUVOK: This Borg is attempting to assimilate it.
00:20:31Doesn't look like he's having much luck.
00:20:39There's a chamber beyond this opening,
00:20:4140 meters wide, high concentrations of antimatter particles.
00:20:45It looks like a warp propulsion system of some kind.
00:20:48It's a ship?
00:20:49Starfleet has encountered species that use organic-based vessels--
00:20:53The Breen, for example.
00:20:54There doesn't seem to be anybody inside.
00:20:58Chakotay to Voyager.
00:20:59JANEWAY: Go ahead, Commander.
00:21:01Captain, we've found an entrance to the bio-mass.
00:21:04We think it might be a ship of some kind.
00:21:07Permission to go inside.
00:21:08JANEWAY: Granted.
00:21:09Harry, that's a Borg distribution node.
00:21:12See if you can download their tactical database.
00:21:15It might contain a record of what happened here.
00:21:17Aye, sir. CHAKOTAY: Tuvok.
00:21:24( beeping )
00:21:26( ominous theme continues )
00:21:53CHAKOTAY: They seem to be organic conduits.
00:21:56They're carrying electrodynamic fluid.
00:21:57TUVOK: It may be an energy source.
00:21:59Maybe.
00:22:03This looks like a binary matrix, but it's laced with neuropeptides.
00:22:07Could be their version of a computer core.
00:22:10( beeping )
00:22:14( clanging echoes )
00:22:19( clanging )
00:22:38( clanging echoes )
00:22:48This damage was caused by a Borg disruptor beam.
00:22:51The wall appears to be regenerating itself.
00:23:03Commander.
00:23:07( clanging )
00:23:15( clanging intensifies )
00:23:21( screeching clang )
00:23:32( screaming )
00:23:34Kes?
00:23:35Harry's in danger. What do you see?
00:23:37Get them out of there! Sick Bay to Janeway.
00:23:39KIM: Commander!
00:23:46There's something in here with us and it's not the Borg.
00:23:49I can't localize it, but it's within 20 meters.
00:23:52Perhaps the pilot has returned.
00:23:53JANEWAY: Voyager to away team.
00:23:56Go ahead. Stand by for transport. We're getting you out of there.
00:24:00CHAKOTAY: Good idea. Energize.
00:24:01( beeping )
00:24:03I can't get a lock on them. What's the problem?
00:24:05It looks like bio-electric interference from whatever's coming toward them.
00:24:08( beeping )
00:24:10It's within seven meters. Let's get out of here.
00:24:13( suspenseful theme playing )
00:24:16Narrow the confinement beam.
00:24:18No effect.
00:24:20I'm going to try a skeletal lock.
00:24:22A what?
00:24:23I think I can get a clean lock on the minerals in their bone tissue.
00:24:27I just came up with it, but I think it might work.
00:24:29( suspenseful theme continues )
00:24:43The life-form's five meters away and closing.
00:24:46From where?
00:24:48( snarling )
00:24:54( screaming )
00:25:00I've got them.
00:25:02A skeletal lock, huh?
00:25:03We'll have to add that one to the transporter manual.
00:25:06( beeping ) Captain.
00:25:08The bioship is powering up-- Like it's charging some kind of weapon.
00:25:14( groans )
00:25:15Mr. Paris, get us out of here--
00:25:17Maximum warp.
00:25:27( grunts )
00:25:46The alien ship is not pursuing.
00:25:51JANEWAY: Kes?
00:25:53I could hear its thoughts.
00:25:55The pilot of the bioship was trying to communicate with me.
00:26:00They're a telepathic species.
00:26:02I've been aware of them for some time now, the premonitions. Captain, it's not the Borg that we should be worried about. It's them.
00:26:10What did it say to you?
00:26:11It said...
00:26:16"The weak... will perish."
00:26:28JANEWAY: Captain's Log, Stardate 50984.3.
00:26:32It's been 12 hours
00:26:34since our confrontation with the alien life-form.
00:26:36There's no sign that we're being pursued,
00:26:39and we've had no further encounters with the Borg.
00:26:42I've decided to hold our course.
00:26:44The Northwest Passage is only one day away,
00:26:47and I won't allow fear
00:26:49to undermine this crew's sense of purpose...
00:26:51even if that fear is justified.
00:27:00The infection is spreading.
00:27:01What began with a few stray cells contaminating the chest wound is now infusing every system in his body.
00:27:08It looks like he's being transformed in some way.
00:27:11Not exactly.
00:27:12The alien cells are consuming his body from the inside out.
00:27:16In essence...
00:27:18Mr. Kim is being eaten alive.
00:27:21He's still conscious, Doctor?
00:27:23I tried giving him a sedative, but it was rejected immediately.
00:27:26In fact, every treatment I've tried has been neutralized within seconds.
00:27:33( computer beeping )
00:27:36These are alien cells.
00:27:38Each one contains more than a hundred times the DNA of a human cell.
00:27:43It's the most densely coded life-form I've ever seen.
00:27:47Even I would need years to decipher it.
00:27:49They have an extraordinary immune response.
00:27:53Anything that penetrates the cell membrane... chemical...biological... technological... it's all instantly destroyed.
00:28:05That's why the Borg can't assimilate them.
00:28:07Resistance in this case is far from futile.
00:28:11Nevertheless, I believe Borg technology holds the key to saving Mr. Kim.
00:28:17How so?
00:28:18I hope to unleash an army of modified
00:28:20Borg nanoprobes into his bloodstream, designed to target and eradicate the infection.
00:28:25As you know, I've been analyzing the nanoprobes.
00:28:28They're efficient little assimilators.
00:28:31One can't help but admire the workmanship.
00:28:33But they're no match for the alien cells.
00:28:36So I successfully dissected a nanoprobe and managed to access its recoding mechanism.
00:28:44I reprogrammed the probe to emit the same electrochemical signatures as the alien cells.
00:28:49That way, the probe can do its work without being detected.
00:28:53Observe.
00:28:55The alien cells are completely oblivious to the probe until it's too late.
00:28:59Unfortunately, I've only created a few prototypes.
00:29:04I'll need several days to modify enough nanoprobes to cure Ensign Kim.
00:29:08Does Harry have several days?
00:29:11I wish I knew.
00:29:14( dramatic theme playing )
00:29:22Fight it, Harry.
00:29:24That's an order.
00:29:30We've analyzed the Borg's tactical database.
00:29:32They refer to these new aliens as "Species 8472."
00:29:36Over the past five months, the Borg have been attacked by them on at least a dozen occasions.
00:29:40Each time, the Borg were defeated swiftly.
00:29:42The Collective has very little information about the species.
00:29:45Is anything known about where they come from?
00:29:49I'm afraid so.
00:29:50( console beeping )
00:29:54Get the captain.
00:29:58JANEWAY: The Northwest Passage.
00:30:01It's clear of Borg activity for a very good reason.
00:30:04I'm detecting 133 bioships.
00:30:06More are approaching.
00:30:08From where?
00:30:09They seem to be coming from a quantum singularity.
00:30:12TORRES: I'm localizing the gravimetric distortions.
00:30:14On screen.
00:30:21Kes?
00:30:22Anything?
00:30:24Yes, I can hear them.
00:30:30They're in a place where they're all alone.
00:30:32Nothing else lives there.
00:30:33Some kind of parallel universe?
00:30:35I don't know.
00:30:38I feel malevolence... a cold hatred.
00:30:42The weak will perish.
00:30:46It's an invasion.
00:30:48They intend on destroying everything.
00:30:51Tom, reverse course, maximum warp.
00:30:53Take us five light-years out and hold position.
00:30:55Aye, Captain.
00:30:56Maintain Red Alert.
00:30:57Commander?
00:31:08That moment we spoke about? It's here.
00:31:11Any thoughts? Just one.
00:31:13Flying into that corridor would mean certain death.
00:31:15Agreed. The Northwest Passage is no longer an option.
00:31:19So now the choice is between facing the Borg in their space or finding a nice planet here in the Delta Quadrant and giving up on ever getting home.
00:31:28We'd be turning around, but we wouldn't be giving up.
00:31:31We may find another way home.
00:31:36I'm not ready to walk onto that Bridge and tell the crew we're quitting.
00:31:39I can't do it, Chakotay, not yet.
00:31:41There must be another alternative.
00:31:43Kathryn.... you haven't slept in two days.
00:31:47Try getting some rest and clearing your head.
00:31:50We're safe for the moment.
00:31:52We can tell the crew tomorrow if we have to.
00:31:56See you in the morning.
00:32:01( door opens, closes )
00:32:04( dramatic theme playing )
00:32:26Maestro?
00:32:32Leonardo.
00:32:37Catarina...
00:32:39buona sera.
00:32:40Am I disturbing you?
00:32:42What do you see?
00:32:46A wall, with candlelight reflecting on it.
00:32:49Why?
00:32:51What do you see?
00:32:53A flock of starlings... the leaves on an oak... a horse's tail... a thief with a noose around his neck...
00:33:05Ah... and a wall... with the candlelight reflecting on it.
00:33:15There are times, Catarina, when I find myself... transfixed by a shadow on the wall, or the splashing of water against a stone.
00:33:25I stare at it, the hours pass... the world around me drops away... replaced by worlds being created and destroyed by my imagination... a way to focus the mind.
00:33:46Sit and tell me why you have come.
00:33:58There's a path before me... the only way home.
00:34:03And on either side, mortal enemies bent on destroying each other.
00:34:09If I attempt to pass through them,
00:34:12I'll be destroyed as well.
00:34:14But if I turn around, that would end all hope of ever getting home.
00:34:21And no matter how much I try to focus my mind,
00:34:24I can't see an alternative.
00:34:27When one's imagination cannot provide an answer, one must seek out a greater imagination.
00:34:38There are times when even I find myself kneeling in prayer.
00:34:44I must deliver a bronzetto to the monks at Santa Croce.
00:34:49Come with me, Catarina, eh?
00:34:53We will awake the abbot, visit the chapel, and appeal to God.
00:34:59Somehow I don't think that's going to work for me.
00:35:04( suspenseful theme playing )
00:35:11But there is an alternative I hadn't considered.
00:35:17What if I made an appeal...
00:35:22...to the devil?
00:35:29An alliance with the Borg?
00:35:30More like... an exchange.
00:35:33We offer them a way to defeat their new enemy, and, in return, we get safe passage through their space.
00:35:41In developing a treatment for Harry, the Doctor has found a way to attack the aliens at a microscopic level.
00:35:47It's still in the experimental stages, Captain.
00:35:49I've only made a few prototypes.
00:35:50Nevertheless, if we teach the Borg how to modify their own nanoprobes, they'd have a blueprint to create a weapon to fight the aliens.
00:35:57In theory, yes.
00:35:59B'Elanna, it's clear from the Borg database that they know practically nothing about Species 8472.
00:36:06That's right. The Borg gain knowledge through assimilation.
00:36:08What they can't assimilate, they can't understand.
00:36:10But we don't assimilate.
00:36:12We investigate, and in this case, that's given us an edge.
00:36:16We've discovered something they need.
00:36:19But the Borg aren't exactly known for their diplomacy.
00:36:23How can we expect them to cooperate with us?
00:36:25Normally, the answer would be no, but if what I've learned from the aliens is true, the Borg are losing this conflict.
00:36:31In one regard, the Borg are no different than we are. They're trying to survive.
00:36:36I don't believe they're going to refuse an offer that will help them do that.
00:36:40What makes you think the Borg won't attempt to take the information by assimilating Voyager and its crew?
00:36:46Because that won't get them anywhere.
00:36:48Doctor, you're the only one on board with full knowledge of the nanoprobe modifications.
00:36:53I want you to transfer all of that research into your holo-matrix. Certainly.
00:36:57You're my guarantee.
00:36:59If the Borg threaten us in any way, we'll simply erase your program.
00:37:04But it won't come to that, Doctor.
00:37:06It's in the Collective's own interest to cooperate.
00:37:09Voyager is only one ship.
00:37:12Our safe passage is a small price to pay for what we're offering in exchange.
00:37:19B'Elanna, assist the Doctor with his transfer.
00:37:22B'ELANNA: Aye, Captain. Mr. Paris-- locate the nearest Borg vessel and lay in a course.
00:37:29They shouldn't be difficult to find.
00:37:30Yes, ma'am.
00:37:33Dismissed.
00:37:41You were awfully quiet.
00:37:45I didn't want the others to hear this, but I think what you're proposing is too great a risk.
00:37:50How so?
00:37:52There's a story I heard as a child, a parable, and I never forgot it.
00:37:57A scorpion was walking along the bank of a river wondering how to get to the other side.
00:38:03Suddenly, he saw a fox.
00:38:06He asked the fox to take him on his back across the river.
00:38:10The fox said, "No, if I do that, you'll sting me, and I'll drown."
00:38:18The scorpion assured him,
00:38:20"If I did that, we'd both drown."
00:38:23So the fox thought about it and finally agreed.
00:38:27So the scorpion climbed up on his back, and the fox began to swim.
00:38:33But halfway across the river, the scorpion stung him.
00:38:39As the poison filled his veins, the fox turned to the scorpion and said, "Why did you do that?
00:38:44Now, you'll drown too."
00:38:47"I couldn't help it," said the scorpion.
00:38:50"It's my nature."
00:38:54I understand the risk...
00:38:59...and I'm not proposing that we try to change the nature of the beast, but this is a unique situation.
00:39:04To our knowledge, the Borg have never been so threatened.
00:39:07They're vulnerable.
00:39:08I think we can take advantage of that.
00:39:10Even if we do somehow negotiate an exchange, how long will they keep up their end of the bargain?
00:39:14It could take months to get across Borg territory.
00:39:17We'd be facing thousands of systems, millions of vessels.
00:39:22But only one Collective, and we've got them over a barrel.
00:39:24We don't need to give them a single bit of information, not until we're safe.
00:39:28We just need the courage to see this through to the end.
00:39:31There are other kinds of courage, like the courage to accept that there are some situations beyond your control.
00:39:36Not every problem has an immediate solution.
00:39:40You're suggesting we turn around.
00:39:41Yes. We should get out of harm's way.
00:39:44Let them fight it out.
00:39:46In the meantime, there's still plenty of Delta Quadrant left to explore. We may find another way home.
00:39:50Or we might find something else.
00:39:52Six months, a year down the road.
00:39:54After Species 8472 gets through with the Borg, we could find ourselves right back in the line of fire, and we'll have missed the window of opportunity that exists right here, right now.
00:40:03How much is our safety worth?
00:40:05What do you mean?
00:40:06We'd be giving an advantage to a race guilty of murdering billions.
00:40:10We'd be helping the Borg assimilate yet another species, just to get ourselves back home-- It's wrong!
00:40:16Tell that to Harry Kim.
00:40:17He's barely alive, thanks to that species.
00:40:19Maybe helping to assimilate them isn't such a bad idea.
00:40:22We could be doing the Delta Quadrant a favor.
00:40:24I don't think you really believe that.
00:40:27I think you're struggling to justify your plan because your desire to get this crew home is blinding you to other options.
00:40:33I know you, Kathryn.
00:40:35Sometimes...
00:40:39...you don't know when to step back.
00:40:42Do you trust me, Chakotay?
00:40:44That isn't the issue. Oh, but it is.
00:40:46Only yesterday, you were saying that we'd face this together, that you'd be at my side.
00:40:50I still have to tell you what I believe.
00:40:52I'm no good to you if I don't do that.
00:40:54I appreciate your insights, but the time for debate is over.
00:40:57I've made my decision.
00:40:59Now, do I have your support?
00:41:04You're the Captain.
00:41:05I'm the First Officer,
00:41:07I'll follow your orders.
00:41:08But that doesn't change my belief that we're making a fatal mistake.
00:41:14Then I guess I am alone after all.
00:41:20Dismissed.
00:41:22( dramatic theme playing )
00:41:26( door opens, closes )
00:41:36There are three planets in this system.
00:41:38Inhabitants, all Borg.
00:41:41A vessel is approaching.
00:41:42All stop. Shields up.
00:41:50They are hailing us.
00:41:52Open a channel.
00:41:54COLLECTIVE: We are the Borg.
00:41:56You will be assimilated.
00:41:58Resistance is futile.
00:42:01They've locked on to us with a tractor beam.
00:42:03Borg vessel.
00:42:04This is Captain Janeway of the Starship Voyager.
00:42:08I have tactical information about Species 8472.
00:42:13I want to negotiate.
00:42:15COLLECTIVE: Negotiation is irrelevant.
00:42:17You will be assimilated.
00:42:23( console beeping )
00:42:24JANEWAY: Borg vessel, what you're receiving is a sample of the knowledge we possess.
00:42:29If you don't disengage your tractor beam immediately,
00:42:32I will have that data destroyed.
00:42:34You have 10 seconds to comply.
00:42:41We know you're in danger of being defeated.
00:42:44You can't afford to risk losing this information.
00:42:47Disengage your trac--
00:42:52COLLECTIVE: State your demands.
00:42:57I want safe passage through your space.
00:43:00Once my ship is beyond Borg territory,
00:43:03I'll give you our research.
00:43:05COLLECTIVE: Unacceptable.
00:43:08Our space is vast.
00:43:10Your passage would require too much time.
00:43:13We need the technology now.
00:43:17If I give it to you now, you'll assimilate us.
00:43:21COLLECTIVE: Species 8472 must be stopped.
00:43:25Our survival is your survival.
00:43:28Give us the technology.
00:43:34No.
00:43:35Safe passage first or no deal.
00:43:43COLLECTIVE: State your proposal.
00:43:45Let's work together. Combine our resources.
00:43:49Even if we do give you the technology now, you're still going to need time to develop it.
00:43:54By working together, we can create a weapon more quickly.
00:44:01If you escort us through your space, we can perfect the weapon as we--
00:44:05( rumbling ) ( grunts )
00:44:07( suspenseful theme playing )
00:44:11Where did that ship come from?
00:44:13A quantum singularity has appeared 20,000 kilometers away.
00:44:16The bioship is heading directly toward the planet.
00:44:18TORRES: The Borg shields are weakening.
00:44:19We might be able to break free of the tractor beam.
00:44:21Can you get a lock on the Captain?
00:44:23Not yet.
00:44:25Commander, there are nine more bioships coming out of the singularity.
00:44:48( groans )
00:44:50What's going on?
00:45:08( theme music playing )
