Waking Moments
00:00:09( sighing )
00:00:14Ensign Kim.
00:00:16I require your assistance in Jefferies Tube 37-Alpha.
00:00:19Well, can it wait?
00:00:20I just got off duty.
00:00:21It is urgent.
00:00:22Hmm.
00:00:28Bridge to Commander Tuvok.
00:00:33Tuvok here.
00:00:34You're needed on the Bridge, sir.
00:00:37On my way.
00:00:49Computer, lights on.
00:00:53Neelix?
00:00:57Is anybody here?
00:00:59CHAKOTAY: Voyager to Lieutenant Paris.
00:01:01Paris here.
00:01:02How's it going out there, Tom?
00:01:04One more orbit and I should have all the data we need.
00:01:07Good work. See you when you get back.
00:01:09Chakotay out.
00:01:14Crewman. Ensign.
00:01:15Sir.
00:01:16Hello, sir.
00:01:35( sighs )
00:01:42It looks to me like you aligned the power couplings perfectly.
00:01:46I did.
00:01:49If you're so sure, then why'd you need me to look at them?
00:01:53I did not.
00:01:54( laughs )
00:01:56Then what's this all about?
00:01:58I've learned from observing Lieutenants Torres and Paris that humans sometimes require a pretext for being intimate with one another.
00:02:07Intimate?
00:02:08( grunts )
00:02:10Resistance is futile.
00:02:13( moaning )
00:02:17( grunts )
00:02:20Paris to Voyager.
00:02:21CHAKOTAY: Voyager here.
00:02:22My primary warp manifold just ruptured.
00:02:25I've lost helm control.
00:02:26Auxiliary power is off-line.
00:02:28Thrusters won't respond.
00:02:29Say again, Tom.
00:02:30Your signal's breaking up.
00:02:32My orbit's decaying.
00:02:33I don't think I can hold it.
00:02:35Repeat that, Tom.
00:02:36I need an emergency beam-out!
00:02:38Voyager to Lieutenant Paris. Come in!
00:02:44Neelix?
00:02:48What can I do for you, Captain?
00:02:51Where is everybody?
00:02:52Didn't you see them when you came in?
00:02:55No.
00:02:56Take a look.
00:03:08Computer, activate lights.
00:03:09( Janeway gasps )
00:03:17Lieutenant Commander Tuvok reporting for duty.
00:03:20( all laughing )
00:03:23Is something wrong?
00:03:24I think you forgot something, Tuvok.
00:03:26( laughing continues )
00:03:37It appears that, in my haste to report to the Bridge,
00:03:41I neglected to put on my uniform.
00:03:43( laughing )
00:03:55JANEWAY: What happened to them?
00:03:57NEELIX: They died.
00:03:58Why?
00:03:59You didn't get them home in time.
00:04:04( gasps )
00:04:22( screaming )
00:04:24( screaming )
00:04:37( gasps )
00:04:38( moans )
00:04:40( panting )
00:06:32( yawning )
00:06:34( door chimes )
00:06:49Hello.
00:06:51Good morning.
00:06:54Sleep well?
00:06:57Not really.
00:06:58What are you doing here?
00:07:00I just thought I'd stop by and ask you why you didn't meet me for breakfast.
00:07:06Breakfast...
00:07:07What time is it?
00:07:097:40.
00:07:10And we were supposed to meet at 0700.
00:07:13I was there-- right after I got off the night shift.
00:07:17I waited... and I waited and I called you on the com.
00:07:20I... uh... I-I didn't hear you.
00:07:23I was having this wild nightmare.
00:07:25I was out like a light.
00:07:26I'm sorry. I'll get dressed right now.
00:07:28You don't have time. You're due on the Bridge at 0800, and I've got to get some sleep.
00:07:32Oh, I hate this!
00:07:34We never see each other.
00:07:40I'm off Friday night.
00:07:41Great.
00:07:43Let's go skiing.
00:07:44How about Saint Moritz?
00:07:47We went skiing last time.
00:07:49And you loved it.
00:07:50You're getting really good, you know.
00:07:52I just thought maybe we could run a program where the wind chill factor wasn't 30 below zero... like... Fiji or Samoa.
00:08:01Oh. There's nothing to do there.
00:08:03And you can be warm while you're not doing it.
00:08:07How about a compromise?
00:08:10Um... spring skiing in Chile?
00:08:13Much warmer.
00:08:14A compromise...
00:08:17How about Tahiti?
00:08:20Hmm. Tahiti.
00:08:24As long as I can go waterskiing, fine.
00:08:27You're on.
00:08:33Now, go get dressed, so you'll at least have time to stop for some coffee.
00:08:37I'll see you Friday night.
00:08:46( sighs )
00:08:47Morning, Tom.
00:08:48Mm. What will it be?
00:08:50Scrambled, sunny-side up, over easy?
00:08:52Just a cup of coffee. Are you sure?
00:08:54Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you know.
00:08:57Neelix! Right.
00:09:10Uh...
00:09:11Neelix... did you have a rough night or something?
00:09:14Why do you ask?
00:09:16Because you just poured me a steaming cup of cooking oil.
00:09:23Actually, I did have a little trouble sleeping last night.
00:09:26Nightmares.
00:09:27Oh.
00:09:28Me, too.
00:09:30Must have been those three full moons we passed yesterday.
00:09:33Well, a few sips of my coffee should clear the fuzz out of your brain.
00:09:37Maybe you should pour yourself a cup while you're at it.
00:09:52Seem to be a little shorthanded today.
00:09:54Tom and Harry are both late.
00:09:56I was going to give them another five minutes, but I'll call them now, if you'd like.
00:10:00That's all right.
00:10:01I'm a little late myself, aren't I?
00:10:02I wasn't going to mention it.
00:10:04Burning the midnight oil?
00:10:06Actually, I went to bed early for a change, but I had a nightmare and I could not get back to sleep.
00:10:10I had a bad dream last night, too.
00:10:12You tell me yours and I'll tell you mine.
00:10:15Sorry I'm late, Captain.
00:10:19Well?
00:10:21I was in the forest with my father.
00:10:23We were hunting deer, which was odd, because that was something I always refused to do.
00:10:30We cornered the animal.
00:10:31I looked to my father to see if he was going to kill it, but he wasn't my father anymore.
00:10:36He was a vicious-looking alien.
00:10:38There was an alien in my dream, too.
00:10:40And it wasn't from any race I've seen before. He had... sharp ridges on his forehead and on the front of his neck.
00:10:49That's what mine looked like.
00:10:51I don't mean to be eavesdropping, but...
00:10:53I had a nightmare last night, too, and I'm pretty sure I saw the same guy.
00:10:59Tuvok?
00:11:01By any chance did you have a bad dream last night?
00:11:04I did have a somewhat unsettling dream, yes.
00:11:08It involved an alien with ridges on his face and neck.
00:11:13I'd say this sounds like more than a coincidence.
00:11:16Let's get the rest of the senior staff together and come up with some answers.
00:11:20Which reminds me, where's Harry?
00:11:21Bridge to Ensign Kim.
00:11:25Computer, locate Ensign Kim.
00:11:27Ensign Kim is in his quarters.
00:11:29Tuvok.
00:11:35Deck 6.
00:11:38I've got a hunch
00:11:39Harry's dreaming about our new alien friend.
00:11:42That would be consistent with the experiences the rest of us have had.
00:11:46Tell me more about your dream.
00:11:48Where exactly did you see the alien?
00:11:50As a matter of fact, it was here in the turbolift.
00:11:52What happened?
00:11:53The alien simply stared at me as if scrutinizing my appearance.
00:11:58That's what happened in my dream.
00:11:59What did you do?
00:12:01I returned to my quarters.
00:12:03Did the alien follow you?
00:12:05He did.
00:12:08And then?
00:12:09He watched me.
00:12:11Doing what?
00:12:14Getting dressed.
00:12:17Getting dressed?
00:12:19Yes.
00:12:21I don't suppose I should ask why you were undressed.
00:12:26I would prefer that you didn't.
00:12:39( door buzzes )
00:12:40Harry?
00:12:44Harry?
00:12:45Computer, open door 105-2.
00:12:47Security clearance: Tuvok-zeta-nine.
00:12:59Harry?
00:13:06Harry, wake up.
00:13:18Are they comatose?
00:13:19Not exactly.
00:13:21They all appear to be in a hyper-REM state.
00:13:24I've tried every conventional method of waking them-- from drugs to direct cortical stimulation-- but nothing works.
00:13:29Do you have any idea what's causing this?
00:13:31Scans haven't detected any viral or bacterial agents.
00:13:35No cranial trauma, no neural disorders.
00:13:38They're simply... asleep.
00:13:48I'd say it's a pretty good bet this is somehow related to the alien from our dreams.
00:13:53Any progress in identifying him?
00:13:56Not yet, but I've got everyone working on it.
00:13:57In the meantime, what's your recommendation?
00:14:00Large doses of animazine.
00:14:02I thought you said drugs weren't working.
00:14:04Not for them. For everybody else.
00:14:06Until I can determine what's happening
00:14:08I'd suggest the rest of you avoid going to sleep.
00:14:16I'd say his ridges were a little more pronounced.
00:14:19Computer, increase facial ridge height by four centimeters.
00:14:24PARIS: That's closer.
00:14:27I think his eyes were wider apart.
00:14:29Computer, increase the space between the eyes by three centimeters.
00:14:34Increase skin color and texture.
00:14:39That's him.
00:14:41Has anybody seen this species before?
00:14:44While you were awake, I mean.
00:14:46Seven?
00:14:47He doesn't resemble any species assimilated by the Borg.
00:14:50PARIS: So is he just a figment of our imagination?
00:14:53TORRES: If he is, we've all been imagining the exact same thing.
00:14:56One possible explanation is that he's attempting to make telepathic contact.
00:15:00He's doing more than making contact.
00:15:02We've got six crew members who can't wake up.
00:15:05For all we know, it's some sort of attack.
00:15:07From where?
00:15:09Astrometric scans haven't revealed any ships in this vicinity or planets capable of sustaining humanoid life.
00:15:15So where do we look?
00:15:18In our dreams.
00:15:20That's the only place any of us have seen him, right?
00:15:22So, if we want to communicate with him-- find out what he wants-- we'll have to do it on his terms.
00:15:27How do you propose we do that?
00:15:31Lucid dreaming.
00:15:32What's that?
00:15:33It's a technique which allows you to take control of your dream.
00:15:37That happened to me once.
00:15:39I dreamt I was falling and suddenly I realized that I was dreaming and I could fly, land... do whatever I wanted.
00:15:46I was in complete control of the dream.
00:15:48What happened to you by accident is something some people can do by design.
00:15:51I've been able to have a lucid dream by using the same technology I use for a vision quest.
00:15:56I may be able to use it to communicate with this alien.
00:15:59Maybe so.
00:16:01But how do we know you'd be able to wake up again?
00:16:04It's kind of like self-hypnosis.
00:16:06Before I go to sleep, I choose a visual cue-- something to let me know I'm dreaming--
00:16:11Earth's moon, say.
00:16:12Once I see it, I can wake myself by tapping the back of my hand three times.
00:16:16TUVOK: Perhaps you are capable of doing this under normal circumstances, but these were hardly conventional dreams we experienced.
00:16:23I don't see any other way of finding out what our friend here is after, or how we can wake up Harry and the others.
00:16:29Besides, we can't stay awake forever.
00:16:33You'll do this in Sick Bay under the doctor's supervision.
00:16:36The rest of you keep scanning the region.
00:16:37Analyze this ship from stem to stern.
00:16:40Wherever he is, find him. Come on.
00:16:47Normally, I consider a good night's sleep an important part of any health regimen, but in this case, I can't recommend it.
00:16:53I respect your medical opinion, doctor.
00:16:55But at this point, we're out of options.
00:16:59This will regulate your hypothalamus.
00:17:01But in all probability,
00:17:02I won't be able to wake you.
00:17:04You'll be on your own.
00:17:05I understand.
00:17:09Ready?
00:17:14Pleasant dreams.
00:17:19Ah-koo-chee-moya.
00:17:21Far from the sacred places of my grandfathers, far from the bones of my people,
00:17:28I seek to sleep, to meet the one who has visited us in our dreams.
00:18:07( door opens )
00:18:10( door closes )
00:18:38( door opens )
00:19:03I know this is a dream-- my dream.
00:19:06I'm in control.
00:19:07You're mistaken.
00:19:08Am I?
00:19:10This is more than a dream.
00:19:11It's my reality and you're no different than the others.
00:19:14"The others?"
00:19:15The waking species.
00:19:17For centuries, you've come and found us in a state that you call "sleep" and tried to destroy us, but not anymore.
00:19:24Now we are in control.
00:19:26One by one, you will fall asleep and enter our reality, where it is you who will be destroyed.
00:19:34We didn't attack you.
00:19:35We didn't even know you existed until we started seeing you in our dreams.
00:19:39Tell me how I can wake my crew and I promise we'll leave.
00:19:43As long as you're asleep, you're no threat to us.
00:19:45I can wake myself anytime I want, and if I do...
00:19:50I'm going to start looking for you in the waking world-- find where you're sleeping.
00:19:55You wouldn't want that.
00:19:58Leave our space.
00:20:00Once you're beyond it, your people will awaken.
00:20:03Just tell me how far we need to go.
00:20:05There's a six-planet system less than a parsec away.
00:20:07It marks the nearest border of our space.
00:20:10We can be past it in one day.
00:20:12Then wake yourself... and pray you never dream of us again.
00:20:21Congratulations, Commander.
00:20:23You're awake.
00:20:24( panting )
00:20:25Chakotay.
00:20:26I'm fine.
00:20:28The alien-- did you see him?
00:20:31And?
00:20:32Well, it was certainly one of the most interesting away missions I've ever been on.
00:20:37I'll tell you about it on the way to the Bridge.
00:20:48Tuvok, scan for a six-planet system.
00:20:51It should be less than a parsec from here.
00:20:53I have it, Captain, at coordinates 139 mark 42.
00:20:56Tom, lay in a course.
00:20:59Aye, Captain.
00:21:01Course laid in.
00:21:02Do you mind if I ask where we're heading?
00:21:04Past the aliens' territory.
00:21:06Once we're clear of it, Harry and the others should wake up.
00:21:08And the rest of us can finally get some sleep.
00:21:10One step at a time, Tom.
00:21:15From what the alien told me, it sounds like they have corporeal form, but they communicate through their dreams.
00:21:20For them, it's as real as the waking world.
00:21:22Extraordinary.
00:21:23It reminds me of the Australian Aborigines.
00:21:25They believed the dream world was no more or less real than the waking world.
00:21:29In fact, their creation mythology says their ancestors actually dreamed the universe into existence.
00:21:34That's mythology.
00:21:35This seems to be fact.
00:21:39I wonder... do they ever wake up?
00:21:42How did they evolve this way?
00:21:43We may never know.
00:21:45Sometimes first contact is last contact.
00:21:58We're approaching the border of the aliens' space.
00:22:01Commander Tuvok, inform the doctor.
00:22:03TUVOK: Aye, Captain.
00:22:09Wake up, Ensign.
00:22:13( groaning softly )
00:22:14What's going on?
00:22:16You were napping.
00:22:19In Sick Bay?
00:22:20We had to move you here when we couldn't wake you.
00:22:25Whew.
00:22:26How long?
00:22:2717 hours.
00:22:28I take it you experienced nightmares like the rest of the crew.
00:22:32Oh, I had nightmares, all right.
00:22:34Tell me about them.
00:22:36Well...
00:22:37I was, uh, in the corridor...
00:22:41( door opens )
00:22:43Captain Janeway asked me to bring you the results of our astrometric scans.
00:22:47She thought they might be helpful in determining the precise cause of the crew's somnolence.
00:22:51Thank you.
00:22:52Ensign Kim, now that you're awake,
00:22:54I require your assistance in Jefferies Tube 21-Beta.
00:22:58Is something wrong?
00:23:00No. I, um...
00:23:04I'm still feeling a little groggy.
00:23:06Then, I'll wait until you are fully recovered.
00:23:10Now, then, Ensign, you were telling me about your nightmare.
00:23:16You know what, doc? Um...
00:23:21I'm... famished.
00:23:24( clearing throat )
00:23:26Haven't eaten in at least 17 hours, right?
00:23:28Very well.
00:23:30Go eat, get some clothes on, and report back in an hour.
00:23:33I'll see you later.
00:23:35You too, Seven.
00:23:39And the next thing I knew,
00:23:40I was being boiled alive in a pot of my own leola root stew.
00:23:44Talk about a nightmare.
00:23:46Well, it was perfectly seasoned.
00:23:48( door opens )
00:23:51Well, if it isn't Sleeping Beauty.
00:23:55I do look well-rested, don't I?
00:23:57NEELIX: Is everyone awake now?
00:23:58The doc checked us all out and says we're fine.
00:24:01Have a seat.
00:24:02We were just trading dream stories.
00:24:05Tell us yours.
00:24:06Oh. It was... nothing very interesting.
00:24:09Just the usual...
00:24:11You know, uh...
00:24:12Who was she, Harry?
00:24:17The woman of my dreams.
00:24:19( cracking up )
00:24:22What I'd like to know is what Tuvok dreamt about.
00:24:26Yes, Commander, tell us.
00:24:28What do Vulcans dream?
00:24:30Aren't you supposed to have horrible nightmares?
00:24:32I wonder what a Vulcan nightmare would be like?
00:24:35NEELIX: Alone, exiled on a planet where the only form of communication... is laughter.
00:24:43( all laughing )
00:24:45Oh, come on, Tuvok.
00:24:47I won't dignify this inquisition with a response.
00:24:53JANEWAY: Red Alert.
00:24:54All hands to battle stations.
00:24:56They're coming around for another pass.
00:24:58Auxiliary power to the shields.
00:25:03Return fire.
00:25:08CHAKOTAY: No damage to the alien ship.
00:25:10Our phasers can't penetrate their shields.
00:25:12Arm photon torpedoes.
00:25:13We seem to have a knack for provoking strangers these days.
00:25:18Shields are off-line.
00:25:19Fire.
00:25:23I've lost power to the torpedo launchers.
00:25:25What's happening?
00:25:26Power is being drained from all systems.
00:25:29We're being hailed.
00:25:31On screen.
00:25:33Captain.
00:25:34Ensign Kim.
00:25:35Commander Chakotay.
00:25:36I'm glad to see you all up and about.
00:25:46Janeway to Engineering.
00:25:47We need auxiliary power to the engines now.
00:25:50I think you'll find that impossible.
00:25:52B'Elanna, report. TORRES: There's a localized dampening field around the ship, Captain.
00:25:56I can't give you engines, weapons, shields...
00:25:59Everything you told me was a lie.
00:26:00This was all an elaborate trap to get Voyager here.
00:26:03It appears you're learning more about my people after all.
00:26:07Prepare to surrender your ship.
00:26:09Captain, three more alien vessels are approaching.
00:26:13They are powering weapons.
00:26:15You've gone to so much trouble to commandeer this ship.
00:26:18I don't think you're going to destroy it.
00:26:21I won't need to.
00:26:28Janeway to the crew. We're under attack.
00:26:30Implement defense procedure omega.
00:26:33It's no use.
00:26:34We've taken every deck.
00:26:35The ship is ours.
00:26:53Captain.
00:27:02All the time I thought I was negotiating, they were just setting us up to fly right into their web.
00:27:06You couldn't have known it was a trick.
00:27:07I don't understand. They exist in dreams and reality?
00:27:11Apparently, entering our dreams was their way to learn about us... perhaps to probe our weaknesses.
00:27:15Not to mention lure us into an ambush.
00:27:17We need to retake the ship.
00:27:19That means getting out of this cargo bay.
00:27:21I checked the Jefferies tubes. They're sealed.
00:27:23Maybe we can open them manually.
00:27:24That's not going to be easy.
00:27:26They've got people everywhere.
00:27:27We'll have to create a diversion.
00:27:29Any ideas? I have one, Captain.
00:27:33( grunts )
00:27:36What the hell are you doing?!
00:27:38( speaking softly ): Creating a diversion.
00:27:40Ensign Kim, it is your fault we have been captured.
00:27:47I suggest you fight back.
00:27:49( grunting )
00:27:53Tom... try to get into a Jefferies tube.
00:27:56You two work on the power grid.
00:27:58I'll deal with this.
00:28:00ALIEN: Stop, stop! JANEWAY: What's going on here?
00:28:03These are my people. I'll handle them.
00:28:05Ensign, that's enough. Move!
00:28:25What's wrong?
00:28:26I'm still asleep.
00:28:27What are you talking about?
00:28:32Chakotay!
00:28:40( alarmed gasp )
00:28:42Commander Chakotay, you're awake.
00:28:45Am I?
00:28:46Are you sure?
00:28:48Of course you are.
00:28:55What are you looking for?
00:28:57The moon.
00:28:58What?
00:29:03I don't see it.
00:29:07Where's the Captain?
00:29:08Asleep-- along with the rest of the crew.
00:29:11All of them?
00:29:12Except me.
00:29:13No rest for the never-weary.
00:29:15What happened?
00:29:16As soon as you entered your lucid dream, they all began falling asleep one by one.
00:29:20I've been trying every method I can think of to revive them, but nothing works.
00:29:24It's been 39 hours.
00:29:26I've been asleep for almost two days?
00:29:28If I can't wake them soon,
00:29:29I'm going to have to start feeding them intravenously.
00:29:32They let me think I was awake, but I was still dreaming.
00:29:35You weren't the only one.
00:29:36Look at this.
00:29:38What is it?
00:29:39A neurogenic field created by heightened electrical activity in the brain.
00:29:43It's been occurring in all the sleeping crew members-- and that's not all.
00:29:47This is Ensign Kim's brain wave pattern, indicating that he's dreaming in a hyper-REM state.
00:29:53This is Crewman Foster's pattern.
00:29:56They're identical.
00:29:58Lieutenant Torres,
00:30:00Captain Janeway, Commander Tuvok...
00:30:03I don't know what it means.
00:30:05I think I do.
00:30:08Not only are they dreaming, they're all having the same dream.
00:30:19It wasn't just my dream. It was a communal dream.
00:30:21Everyone's REM patterns are identical.
00:30:23They're experiencing the same images, each from his or her own point of view.
00:30:26Yes. I saw the rest of the crew-- interacted with them.
00:30:29We were all working together to fight off an alien attack.
00:30:32Which wasn't real.
00:30:34Oh, we're under attack, all right.
00:30:35Commander?
00:30:37Maybe this is the way these aliens fight their enemies.
00:30:39They exist somewhere in our reality as physical beings, but they must be asleep, unable to defend themselves against what they call "waking species."
00:30:48We'll never defeat them in their dream reality, but if we can find them, find where they're sleeping, we'll have the advantage.
00:30:54But we've been scanning for life-forms since this started and we haven't found anything.
00:30:58Maybe we've been looking in the wrong place.
00:31:00I'm betting a species that spends its time sleeping isn't going to be hanging around where conventional scans can locate them.
00:31:07So, how do we find them?
00:31:08This neurogenic field you mentioned-- anyone in a hyper-REM state would be producing one.
00:31:13In theory, yes.
00:31:15So if we scan for other neurogenic fields, it might lead us to the sleeping aliens.
00:31:19If you need me, I'll be on the Bridge.
00:31:33Time for a little energy boost, Commander.
00:31:35We don't want you drifting back to sleep.
00:31:36Sorry about the mess, but this is what happens when my repeated requests for a larger Sick Bay fall on deaf ears.
00:31:43( console beeping )
00:31:49What is it?
00:31:51Scanners have detected a neurogenic field emanating from beneath the surface of a planet less than a light-year from here.
00:31:57Excuse me, Tom, but I've got to change our course.
00:32:08Still dreaming?
00:32:10How is that possible?
00:32:12I don't know, but that's what Chakotay said right before he vanished. That doesn't make any sense.
00:32:16He was wide awake right here with us.
00:32:18He said something about still being asleep and then he started tapping the back of his hand like he said he would to wake up from his lucid dream.
00:32:24( softly ): And then he disappeared.
00:32:28The question is, where did he go?
00:32:31The aliens must have transported him somewhere.
00:32:34Or perhaps he did wake up.
00:32:36Tuvok?
00:32:37It's possible he was dreaming all of this.
00:32:41Wait a minute.
00:32:43If Chakotay was dreaming and he woke up, what are we doing here?
00:32:48Perhaps we are dreaming as well.
00:32:50Now I'm lost.
00:32:52You're not the only one.
00:32:54Consider that we all experienced nightmares about an alien whose people apparently live out their lives in a dream state.
00:33:01Perhaps we are in that state this very moment. That's ridiculous.
00:33:05We're not asleep. Wait.
00:33:07When you dream, you're rarely aware that you're sleeping.
00:33:10I can understand how we could mistake dreaming for reality, but that doesn't explain how we're all interacting with one another.
00:33:17Maybe we're not.
00:33:18Not what?
00:33:19Interacting with one another.
00:33:21Maybe this is all one person's dream-- if, for example, mine-- and none of you are really here.
00:33:27Trust me, Neelix, I wish I weren't, but I'm here.
00:33:29Collective unconsciousness.
00:33:31Seven, come here.
00:33:36The Borg share a collective consciousness.
00:33:39These aliens may have somehow induced a state of collective unconsciousness.
00:33:43You mean... we're all sharing the same dream?
00:33:47TUVOK: It is possible.
00:33:49This is all fascinating speculation, but unless we have proof to the contrary, we have to treat this like an invasion.
00:33:56I managed to open a Jefferies tube hatch.
00:33:58Good work.
00:33:59Neelix, Seven, Kim, do what you can to distract the guards.
00:34:02We're going to find a way to retake the ship.
00:34:12Looks like a complete power drain.
00:34:14Their dampening field has shut down the warp core.
00:34:17Which begs the question of what they intend to do with an unpowered ship.
00:34:20Tuvok, grab some phaser rifles from the weapons locker.
00:34:24Something tells me when we try to disable the dampening field, we're going to get the aliens' attention.
00:34:29It looks like they're using harmonic inversion technology.
00:34:32If I can isolate the containment frequency,
00:34:35I may be able to get main power back on line.
00:34:38( equipment powering up )
00:34:43That was easy.
00:34:45COMPUTER: Warning. Warp core breach in 60 seconds.
00:34:47Maybe a little too easy.
00:34:48I don't understand.
00:34:49Can you eject the core?
00:34:50I'm trying.
00:34:52It's not working.
00:34:54Warp core breach in 50 seconds.
00:34:56( whooshing )
00:34:58We've got to get out of here.
00:35:00I'm trying to put a containment field around Engineering.
00:35:02Warp core breach in 40 seconds.
00:35:05Got it! Let's move!
00:35:08I don't understand why you couldn't eject the core!
00:35:11Warp core breach in 30 seconds.
00:35:13Something's not right.
00:35:15Captain, we must hurry!
00:35:17I'm going back in there.
00:35:18You'll be killed!
00:35:19Warp core breach...
00:35:20I think I'm onto something. You two go!
00:35:22Captain! That's an order!
00:35:25Warp core breach in ten seconds.
00:35:27Nine, eight, seven, six...
00:35:31( grunts )
00:35:32five, four, three, two, one.
00:35:37( explosion )
00:35:39( breathing heavily )
00:35:47Either I've become impervious to antimatter explosions... or we're still dreaming.
00:36:00A warp core explosion should have destroyed the ship.
00:36:03If I were awake, or if any of this were real, which it obviously isn't.
00:36:06Things just weren't adding up--
00:36:08Chakotay's disappearance, the warp core failing to eject.
00:36:12And as Chakotay said,
00:36:13"lucid dreaming is about taking control" so I... took a chance.
00:36:18Surely, there must have been a less extreme method of testing your assumptions.
00:36:22As Captain, you shouldn't be taking chances with your life.
00:36:25I'm touched by your concern, Tuvok.
00:36:27Now that we know this is a dream... what do we do?
00:36:32I suggest we find a way to regain consciousness.
00:36:41Captain, how did you wake yourself?
00:36:43The same way you did. The others?
00:36:45They should all be starting to wake up.
00:36:47Rise and shine, Mr. Paris.
00:36:49We need to get as far away from their planet as possible.
00:36:52Agreed.
00:36:53I'll make the necessary course correction.
00:36:59What is it?
00:37:02This isn't real.
00:37:04Of course it is.
00:37:08See?
00:37:09No.
00:37:16Doctor?
00:37:17He's paranoid-- disoriented.
00:37:19I suspect much of the crew will suffer similar symptoms when they awake.
00:37:24DOCTOR: Try to relax, Commander. I'm going to sedate you.
00:37:27No! I need to wake up, not sleep!
00:37:29I'm here to help you.
00:37:30No!
00:37:34It's all right, Commander.
00:37:36You're awake again.
00:37:41What happened?
00:37:43You dozed off.
00:37:44I couldn't wake myself like I did before.
00:37:46Our proximity to the neurogenic field is making it more difficult to stay conscious.
00:37:50I need to get down there and find a way to neutralize it.
00:37:53Not so fast.
00:37:54This is a highly potent animazine derivative.
00:37:57If you feel yourself falling asleep again, you must use it.
00:37:59And, Commander, I suggest we keep an open com line.
00:38:03I may need to provide you with a verbal splash of cold water every now and then.
00:38:13It's not working.
00:38:15It's safe to assume that Chakotay and the doctor are making every effort to wake us from our sleep.
00:38:19We have to let the rest of the crew know what's happening-- that as long as they know they're in a dream, they can't be harmed.
00:38:24And if the aliens try to stop us?
00:38:26Then we turn this dreamworld of theirs... into a nightmare.
00:38:45Okay, doctor...
00:38:47I'm in.
00:38:48Acknowledged, Commander.
00:39:25Stand aside.
00:39:27Your weapons are useless against us.
00:39:29You're not fooling anyone.
00:39:31We know this is a dream.
00:39:32You're confused.
00:39:34Actually, I'm finally seeing things clearly.
00:39:38Shoot them.
00:39:43Now, stand aside.
00:39:50All of you, listen closely.
00:39:53What we have to do is stay in control of the dream.
00:39:56If we can do that, the aliens shouldn't be able to hurt us.
00:40:04You sound very sure of yourself, Captain.
00:40:07Why shouldn't I be?
00:40:10Have you thought about what's happening to your bodies in the waking world?
00:40:13How long do you think they'll survive without nourishment?
00:40:17Without physical activity?
00:40:18Your bodies are withering away as we speak.
00:40:22You can't stop it.
00:40:24Don't be so sure.
00:40:26It's some kind of transmitter.
00:40:29It looks like they use it to amplify
00:40:30the neurogenic field.
00:40:32Can you turn it off?
00:40:33I tried knocking it out with my phaser, but there's some kind of force field.
00:40:41Commander?
00:40:42I'm sorry.
00:40:44I'm having trouble concentrating.
00:40:46Time for your medicine.
00:40:58Doctor, this animazine-- it's pretty powerful.
00:41:02Yes. And I suggest you take it immediately.
00:41:04These aliens... they look pretty frail.
00:41:09That's fascinating, Commander. Now please inject yourself.
00:41:15They probably wouldn't have the same tolerance for stimulants that we do.
00:41:19What are you getting at?
00:41:20The animazine might be capable of waking up one of these aliens.
00:41:24Commander, I'd be happy to discuss comparative pharmacology with you after you administer your injection.
00:41:29Actually... I think I'm going to give it to one of my sleepy friends here.
00:41:33What would that accomplish?
00:41:35If I can wake him up,
00:41:37I might be able to get him to deactivate this generator.
00:41:40There's not enough animazine for two doses.
00:41:42If you fall asleep again, there's no way I can revive you.
00:41:45( sighing )
00:41:46Doctor, I want you to go to the Bridge.
00:41:48Commander...
00:41:50I'm giving you an order!
00:41:52Go to the Bridge and target my com signal with a photon torpedo.
00:41:54You're delirious.
00:41:56You're asking me to incinerate you.
00:41:57Not just me... these aliens... and their transmitter, too.
00:42:04But only if you don't hear from me
00:42:05in five minutes. Understood?
00:42:07Commander...
00:42:08Understood?!
00:42:12Aye, sir.
00:42:25Tell me how to deactivate this transmitter, or I shoot.
00:42:29What happened?
00:42:30Looks like he woke up.
00:42:35I'll give you five seconds.
00:42:36Four... three... two...
00:42:45Chakotay.
00:42:50Who's going to help you now, Captain?
00:42:53I found the cavern and your people.
00:42:56I'm there right now in the waking world.
00:42:58And it's all going to be destroyed in less than two minutes unless you deactivate that transmitter.
00:43:03If you are there, you'll be killed, too.
00:43:07I think you're lying.
00:43:09Oh, believe me, if I don't contact my ship, you and I are both going to die in our sleep.
00:43:21Chief Medical Officer's Log, stardate 51471.3.
00:43:25With the neurogenic field neutralized,
00:43:27I've been successful in reviving the entire crew.
00:43:30Unfortunately, the experience has produced
00:43:33a troubling side effect for many of them--
00:43:35acute insomnia.
00:43:41( sighs )
00:43:58Computer, lights on.
00:44:03Sorry, Commander.
00:44:04I didn't mean to frighten you.
00:44:06You're not starting breakfast this early, are you?
00:44:08Just rearranging the supply cabinets.
00:44:10I couldn't sleep.
00:44:12Neither could I.
00:44:13How about a soothing cup of tea?
00:44:16Sounds good.
00:44:18I know it's silly, but every time I'm about to doze off,
00:44:22I... become terrified that I won't be able to wake again.
00:44:26( door opens )
00:44:27You, too?
00:44:29We just finished a little late-night hoverball on the holodeck.
00:44:33Three games in a row.
00:44:34We were hoping it would wear us out.
00:44:36You know, I could learn to enjoy these late-night get-togethers.
00:44:40Speak for yourself.
00:44:42I would kill for a good night's sleep.
00:44:49Neelix, I think it's time for breakfast.
00:44:51( all chuckling )
