The Haunting of Deck Twelve
00:00:28Computer, deactivate Mess Hall lights.
00:00:34( gasping ): Oh! You scared me.
00:00:37That wasn't my intention.
00:00:38No, of course not.
00:00:40I-I-I guess I'm-I'm just a little jumpy-- especially after what happened the last time.
00:00:44That's why I'm here. Oh?
00:00:46We'll be shutting down main power soon.
00:00:48The children's regeneration cycle will be interrupted.
00:00:50They'll require supervision.
00:00:52Well, I'm happy to help.
00:00:54To tell you the truth, I'd be grateful for the distraction.
00:00:57The procedure could take several hours.
00:01:00How much do they know about what's happening?
00:01:03Nothing.
00:01:05The children have overactive imaginations.
00:01:08I don't want to alarm them unnecessarily.
00:01:10What if they start asking questions?
00:01:12I can't just lie to them.
00:01:14You have considerable child-care experience.
00:01:16I'm sure you'll manage.
00:01:25That's close enough.
00:01:26Let our momentum carry us in.
00:01:29( sighs ): Cutting engines.
00:01:32Now, there's a creepy image.
00:01:35Reminds me of something out of Edgar Allan Poe.
00:01:37Looks like a vampire bat.
00:01:39You can make out the wings, even the ears.
00:01:42What do you see, Tuvok?
00:01:44Two Starfleet officers with juvenile imaginations.
00:01:48Come on, Tuvok. Haven't you ever looked up at the clouds and seen an animal?
00:01:52I will never understand the human need to find imagery in something as innocuous as a cloud.
00:01:59Harry, are we ready?
00:02:00Yes, ma'am.
00:02:02Then let's do it.
00:02:03All hands... initiate shutdown sequence.
00:02:24Computer, deactivate EMH.
00:02:48NEELIX: Everything's all right.
00:02:50We've just had to shut down main power temporarily.
00:02:53Nothing to be concerned about.
00:02:58Three, two, one-- mark.
00:03:09All decks report shutdown complete, Captain.
00:03:12Janeway to Seven of Nine. We're ready.
00:03:15Acknowledged.
00:05:14Why did they shut down main power?
00:05:16It's simply a precaution.
00:05:18We've entered a class-J nebula, and the Captain wants to make sure that we don't attract any, uh, residual EM radiation.
00:05:27Our shields provide sufficient protection against nebula discharge.
00:05:31Is that so? ( chuckles )
00:05:33Well, I'm afraid that gaseous anomalies were never really my specialty.
00:05:36Come on, gather 'round. I brought toys and stories and games, and I thought that later we might even have a little sing-along.
00:05:45I should go to Astrometrics.
00:05:47Seven may need my help.
00:05:49I'm afraid that Astrometrics is shut down, too.
00:05:52If we're not analyzing the nebula, why did we enter it?
00:05:56Oh, that is a long and dull story and not nearly as interesting as "Flotter Meets the Invincible Invertebrates."
00:06:03Is Voyager in danger?
00:06:05Mezoti, there's really no need to leap to those kinds of conclusions.
00:06:10Maybe if you explained what's happening in more detail, we wouldn't have to guess.
00:06:13This has something to do with Deck 12, doesn't it?
00:06:16Well, what makes you say that?
00:06:18Deck 12, Section 42 is off limits to everyone but senior officers with a level-6 security clearance.
00:06:24That's because it's haunted, isn't it?
00:06:26Who told you that?
00:06:28Naomi.
00:06:30She was just trying to frighten you.
00:06:32I'll have to have a talk with that girl.
00:06:35Is it true? Does a ghost live there?
00:06:39You're really too old to believe in such silly things.
00:06:42If it's not a ghost, what is it?
00:06:44We deserve an explanation.
00:06:46I don't think that Seven would be too happy if you all started waking up with nightmares.
00:06:52Tell us. Please?
00:06:55All right.
00:06:56Gather 'round.
00:07:01But I'm warning you-- this is not a tale for the faint of heart.
00:07:06We're not faint of heart.
00:07:08Our cardiopulmonary systems are reinforced.
00:07:10So don't leave anything out.
00:07:13All right, but remember, I warned you.
00:07:19It all began several months ago, before you joined Voyager.
00:07:24We were exploring a dark nebula,
00:07:27just gathering deuterium.
00:07:29We had no idea what was in store for us,
00:07:32but when the turbulence started getting rough,
00:07:34we should have seen that as an omen.
00:07:37How goes the particle collecting, Commander?
00:07:40We've gotten enough deuterium to power the warp engines for another thousand light-years.
00:07:44Excellent.
00:07:46Something wrong?
00:07:48Uh, now that you mention it, there is something that I feel compelled to share with you in my capacity as Morale Officer.
00:07:55The crew seem a little on edge.
00:07:58Oh?
00:08:00They don't appear particularly anxious to me.
00:08:05Well, they're very good at hiding their fears.
00:08:07Starfleet training.
00:08:10Um, I was wondering how soon we might be leaving this nebula.
00:08:14Knowing could help reassure them.
00:08:16Well, it's difficult to say.
00:08:19The Bussard collectors are running at maximum, but it's a slow process.
00:08:24We could be here for several more days.
00:08:27Days.
00:08:29Mr. Neelix, are you certain it's not you who is on edge?
00:08:36You know me too well, Mr. Vulcan.
00:08:39I can assure you, a J-class nebula is no cause for alarm.
00:08:43I know it's illogical, but staring into this murky cloud for hours on end can be a little unsettling.
00:08:52When I was a child, an immense plasma drift passed through the Talaxian system.
00:08:59The stars and the moons were blotted out for months.
00:09:02From horizon to horizon, all you could see was this... this enormous, menacing cloud.
00:09:07Ever since then, I've found it a little disturbing to be in nebulas.
00:09:11Perhaps the Captain might give you permission to install curtains.
00:09:16That's an excellent idea, and I have just the right material.
00:09:22Report.
00:09:24KIM: The nebula's beginning to destabilize.
00:09:26Cause. I'm not sure.
00:09:28It could have something to do with the nadion emissions being produced by the Bussard collectors.
00:09:32You're not remembering correctly.
00:09:35I beg your pardon?
00:09:36The Bussard collectors don't produce nadion emissions.
00:09:39Well, the technical details don't matter.
00:09:42What's important is that Voyager's presence was destabilizing the nebula,
00:09:46and the crew wasn't interested in taking any chances.
00:09:49We've got 80 percent of the deuterium we wanted.
00:09:51Maybe we shouldn't push our luck.
00:09:52Agreed. Bridge to Engineering. TORRES: Go ahead.
00:09:54We're suspending the dilithium intake.
00:09:56Acknowledged. Tom, take us out.
00:09:58Aye.
00:10:00NEELIX: But at that exact moment,
00:10:01in the fraction of a second before Tom could engage the engines, zap!
00:10:05We were hit.
00:10:09What was it?
00:10:10The ghost?
00:10:11Shh. Let him finish.
00:10:13Whatever it was, it shook the ship hard.
00:10:18An EM discharge penetrated the hull--
00:10:20Deck 7, Section 10.
00:10:22Increasing power to structural integrity.
00:10:26We're clear.
00:10:28Damage. Power outages on three decks.
00:10:31Auxiliary subprocessors are off-line.
00:10:34No injuries reported. Assign repair teams. Resume course.
00:10:37NEELIX: We'd taken some minor damage,
00:10:40but for the most part, everything was fine...
00:10:45or so we thought.
00:10:47What none of us knew was that a mysterious stowaway had come aboard Voyager.
00:10:59What kind of stowaway?
00:11:01It was obviously a space-dwelling life-form.
00:11:04Yes, but we didn't know that, not at that point.
00:11:08Was it non-corporeal?
00:11:10In a manner of speaking.
00:11:12Hostile? Well, I'm getting to that.
00:11:14Species 5973? Who are they?
00:11:17The Borg encountered them in Galactic Cluster 8.
00:11:20They're multispectrum particle life-forms.
00:11:24No, that's not what this was.
00:11:26Maybe it was an interphasic species.
00:11:28We can either debate comparative xenobiology, or I can continue with the story.
00:11:33Now, it's up to you.
00:11:38Continue the story.
00:11:40Somehow I thought you'd say that.
00:11:43Now, where was I?
00:11:45Oh, uh, yes...
00:11:46Life aboard Voyager
00:11:48would have been more or less back to normal,
00:11:50if it weren't for a few strange malfunctions.
00:11:53( door chimes )
00:11:55JANEWAY: Come in.
00:11:56I've got reports from repair teams.
00:11:59It looks like that EM discharge did more damage than we thought.
00:12:02Transporter Room 1 is out of commission; half the sonic showers are off-line, and we temporarily lost artificial gravity on Deck5.
00:12:09Any injuries?
00:12:11Ensign Mulcahy bumped his head on the ceiling.
00:12:13Ouch.
00:12:16This is terrible.
00:12:17Computer, another cup of coffee, black.
00:12:28You can add replicators to your list.
00:12:31We're getting started on the wrong foot today, my friend.
00:12:35Captain?
00:12:36I'm sorry.
00:12:38I was talking to Voyager.
00:12:40It's nothing to be embarrassed about.
00:12:42I used to have long conversations with my Maquis ship.
00:12:45Really? What did you two talk about?
00:12:48Oh, I can't tell you that. Captain-Starship confidentiality.
00:12:52Of course.
00:12:54If the Doctor heard us, he'd probably recommend counseling.
00:12:58I won't tell if you won't.
00:13:00Deal.
00:13:02Commander, do you see that?
00:13:04It's a meteorite cluster.
00:13:07I doubt it's anything to worry about.
00:13:09I'd tend to agree... if it weren't the same one we passed an hour ago.
00:13:16Ensign. Yes, ma'am.
00:13:18Are you conducting a survey of meteoroids, Tom?
00:13:21Ma'am? Check your sensors.
00:13:22We're traveling in circles.
00:13:24Not according to my readings.
00:13:26Tuvok, run a level-4 diagnostic on the navigational array.
00:13:30There is a malfunction in the subprocessors.
00:13:33It appears we're heading back the way we came.
00:13:35All stop. Reinitialize your sensors.
00:13:38I'm telling you, we rely too much on 24th-century technology, Captain.
00:13:41You give me a window and a sextant, and I guarantee I'll get you where you want to go.
00:13:48We've jumped to warp 6. Tom?
00:13:50Don't look at me.
00:13:51Shut down the warp engines.
00:13:53I can't.
00:13:54Manual override.
00:13:57No response.
00:13:58Bridge to Engineering.
00:14:03I'm reading all stop.
00:14:05Lieutenant Torres, respond.
00:14:07Computer, locate B'Elanna Torres.
00:14:10Lieutenant Torres is in Engineering.
00:14:13Ensign Trumari is on Deck 4, Section 30.
00:14:16Commander Tuvok is on the Bridge...
00:14:18Find out what's going on.
00:14:20Harry, pull the speech processors if you have to, but shut that thing off.
00:14:23Ensign Boreck is in Engineering, Level 2.
00:14:25NEELIX: Meanwhile, Commander Chakotay
00:14:27was headed for Engineering...
00:14:29or so he thought.
00:14:32( sighs )
00:14:33Engineering.
00:14:35Bet you wouldn't try to pull this on the Captain.
00:14:39Have it your way. I'll walk.
00:14:42NEELIX: The turbolift started to fall faster and faster...
00:14:46Anybody hungry?
00:14:47Neelix!
00:14:49You haven't touched your snacks.
00:14:50Snacks are irrelevant. Continue the story.
00:14:53What happened to Commander Chakotay?
00:14:55The turbolift plunged 11 decks at high speed.
00:14:59The g-forces pinned Commander Chakotay to the ceiling.
00:15:02He knew that at any minute, he was going to come crashing down to the bottom of the turbolift, and there was nothing that he could do about it, but then... the descent stabilizers reactivated.
00:15:13The way B'Elanna tells it,
00:15:15Commander Chakotay was not very happy
00:15:17when he showed up in Engineering that morning.
00:15:19If I didn't know any better,
00:15:20I'd say this ship is trying to kill me.
00:15:21Do you have any idea what's going on?
00:15:23I've traced the problem to a series of gel-packs on Deck 13.
00:15:26It looks like they were burned out by am EM discharge from the nebula.
00:15:29And those gel-packs interface with all the affected systems.
00:15:32I'm on my way to repair it right now.
00:15:34Feel like giving me a hand?
00:15:36Only if we stay out of the turbolifts.
00:15:37I'll tell you about it on the way.
00:15:40NEELIX: While Chakotay and B'Elanna headed for Deck 13,
00:15:42new problems were cropping up all over the ship.
00:15:48Crewman Celes, step away from the control panel.
00:15:50Did I do something wrong?
00:15:52You caused a power failure in Astrometrics.
00:15:54I did? How?
00:15:56That's what I'm attempting to find out.
00:15:59I don't see how I could have done anything...
00:16:01I've located the problem.
00:16:02It appears you inadvertently overloaded a series of EPS conduits while performing your diagnostic.
00:16:07But I haven't even started the diagnostic.
00:16:10Then what were you doing?
00:16:11Nothing. I just got here.
00:16:18I know that wasn't my fault.
00:16:23These gel-packs aren't burned out.
00:16:25There's no trace of any EM discharge.
00:16:28Could it have dissipated this quickly?
00:16:30No, it moved. Moved?
00:16:33The discharge seems to be traveling through the bio-neural circuitry... jumping from system to system.
00:16:39Can you isolate it?
00:16:42It's in a series of gel-packs that interface with the environmental controls outside Cargo Bay 2.
00:16:48Let's try to get there before it jumps again.
00:16:51NEELIX: By then, Seven of Nine
00:16:53was in Cargo Bay 2 to run diagnostics,
00:16:56but, because the com system was down,
00:16:58they couldn't warn her, and she had no idea
00:17:00that something was in the room with her.
00:17:03Here? In this cargo bay?
00:17:07Then what happened?
00:17:08The creature was clinging
00:17:10to the circuits and bulkheads,
00:17:11using them to move about the room.
00:17:13It was getting closer and closer.
00:17:19Seven of Nine to the Bridge.
00:17:24Bridge, acknowledge.
00:17:25NEELIX: But, of course, there was no answer.
00:17:28Why didn't she remodulate her neural transceiver, send a message that way?
00:17:32Uh, that's an interesting question.
00:17:34You'll have to ask her. Stop interrupting.
00:17:38Seven tried to get out,
00:17:40but she was trapped.
00:17:48( beeping denial )
00:18:05( coughing )
00:18:18What happened to Seven?
00:18:20The entity must have infiltrated her cybernetic systems and turned her against the rest of the crew.
00:18:24It most certainly did not.
00:18:26You're letting your imagination run away with you.
00:18:28What happened? Why did the light go out?
00:18:31It's all right. I just have to replace the power cell.
00:18:33It'll only take a moment. Nothing to be frightened about.
00:18:37I'm not frightened, but Azan is.
00:18:39I am not.
00:18:40There. ( both gasp )
00:18:42Sorry.
00:18:43I didn't mean to scare you.
00:18:48Now, where was I?
00:18:50Oh, yes.
00:18:52Seven was trapped by the force fields, but fortunately for her,
00:18:57help was on the way.
00:19:06Computer, deactivate this force field.
00:19:08We'll have to cut power to the field generators.
00:19:13The computer's not accepting my command codes.
00:19:15Stand back.
00:19:18The force field's down. Let's get her to Sick Bay.
00:19:20NEELIX: Now, most of us were just going about our business,
00:19:24oblivious to what was happening,
00:19:26but that was about to change.
00:19:30Kim to Engineering.
00:19:34Neelix to the Bridge.
00:19:39I want everyone to report to their stations until we figure out what's going on.
00:19:43Aye, sir.
00:19:44Uh, Ensign, uh, maybe I should come with you.
00:19:47The Captain might need me. This is your post.
00:19:49You may be needed here.
00:19:51Oh, of course.
00:19:54If you need anything, anything at all, you know where to find me.
00:19:59So there I was.
00:20:01The only thing I could do was wait...
00:20:03alone...
00:20:05in the dark.
00:20:08Oh... uh...
00:20:12Voyager was dead in space.
00:20:15System after system was failing,
00:20:17including the environmental controls.
00:20:19Ensign Paris told me it was hotter
00:20:21than the Tarkanian desert on the Bridge.
00:20:24Don't you ever sweat?
00:20:26Not unless the temperature reaches 350 degrees Kelvin, with a humidity factor at approximately...
00:20:30Forget I asked.
00:20:31Very well.
00:20:34I'll make you a deal, Voyager.
00:20:37The next M-Class planetoid we find, we'll set down, and I'll give you a nice maintenance overhaul.
00:20:45What do you say?
00:20:50Tom, check the conn.
00:20:55( system powers up )
00:20:58( chuckles )
00:20:59I don't know what you did, Captain, but I've got helm control back.
00:21:03( sighs ): Thanks, my friend.
00:21:05I'm going to try to get thrusters and impulse engines back on line.
00:21:10Tom, I'm reading an EM surge in your console. Get away from there.
00:21:13( screaming ) Bridge to Sick Bay. Medical emergency!
00:21:16Can we transport him?
00:21:17Transporters are off-line.
00:21:19Why am I not surprised?
00:21:20( console bleeps ) Now what?
00:21:22Warning. Oxygen depletion in progress.
00:21:24Breathable air is being sucked out of the Bridge.
00:21:26Reroute emergency power to environmental control.
00:21:29( coughing )
00:21:30No effect.
00:21:33Everyone out of here now!
00:21:34( coughing )
00:21:37NEELIX: In Sick Bay, the Doctor had his hands full, too.
00:21:39You're fortunate. Another few moments and you'd have been asphyxiated.
00:21:43Where do you think you're going?
00:21:45Lieutenant Torres needs help with the repairs.
00:21:48Doctor!
00:21:49( groaning and gasping )
00:21:53What happened?
00:21:55An EM surge-- Seven had a similar experience.
00:21:57The environmental system converted Cargo Bay 2 into a micronebula.
00:22:01When Gibson and McMinn tried to vent the gas from Deck 7, they were struck by a discharge, too.
00:22:07Are we thinking the same thing?
00:22:09It could be an intelligence at work here.
00:22:11Some kind of an electromagnetic life-form that's using the environmental controls to make the ship more hospitable for itself.
00:22:17And attacking anyone who tries to stop it.
00:22:19My matrix is destabilizing.
00:22:22Transfer his program to the mobile emitter.
00:22:23Quickly.
00:22:25COMPUTER: Warning. Power failure.
00:22:27Let's get the injured out of here.
00:22:30NEELIX: Deck by deck, section by section,
00:22:33the crew was losing control of Voyager.
00:22:35People were scattered throughout the ship
00:22:37with no idea what was happening.
00:22:55( grunts )
00:22:57What did you do that for?
00:22:58Ensign, I'm so sorry.
00:23:00I-I thought... I thought you were a Hirogen, or-or a Borg.
00:23:04And what gave you that idea?
00:23:05It's dark. Your shadow.
00:23:08Trust me, there are no aliens roaming the corridors.
00:23:13You mean we haven't been boarded?
00:23:15It's just a power failure.
00:23:17Isn't that what they sometimes do? Cut the power?
00:23:20What who sometimes does? Hostile aliens.
00:23:23They might be trying to infiltrate the ship.
00:23:26How long has it been since you've run into anyone else?
00:23:29I don't know, four or five hours.
00:23:31I-I tried Sick Bay, but it was deserted.
00:23:34Decks 3 and 4 are empty.
00:23:36I-I was on my way to the Bridge.
00:23:37You're the first person I've seen.
00:23:39Well, there's no one on the Bridge either.
00:23:42You see? Then maybe I was right? Maybe the reason we can't find anyone is because they've all been assimilated. Slow down.
00:23:49There was an environmental failure on the Bridge.
00:23:51That's why it's been evacuated.
00:23:53I don't know what happened in Sick Bay or on Decks 3 and 4, but I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.
00:23:58Uh-uh. No one's been assimilated.
00:24:01Then where are they?
00:24:03They've probably set up a temporary command post-- most likely in Engineering. That's where I'm going.
00:24:11Can I come with you?
00:24:12Of course.
00:24:17Ensign? What?
00:24:20Do you think we could stop by a weapons locker on the way?
00:24:23NEELIX: I still had no idea what was going on.
00:24:26I'd been waiting in the Mess Hall
00:24:27for more than four hours in the dark,
00:24:29cut off from the rest of the crew.
00:24:31( door opens, closes )
00:24:34Is somebody there?
00:24:46Hello?
00:24:54Hello?
00:25:01Hello?
00:25:10Is somebody out there?
00:25:13Tom, if that's you, this isn't funny.
00:25:41( screaming ): Stay away!
00:25:43Calm yourself, Mr. Neelix.
00:25:46Y-you really shouldn't sneak up on people like that.
00:25:50I could have shot you.
00:25:51Your restraint is commendable.
00:25:54Is there a problem with the air supply?
00:25:55An alien life-form has seized control of Voyager's primary systems.
00:25:59It's flooded numerous sections with poisonous gas.
00:26:01Are you saying that this alien life-form is trying to kill us?
00:26:04Its intentions aren't clear.
00:26:06However, we should evacuate. Where to?
00:26:08The Captain has established a secure command post in Engineering.
00:26:12Were you scared?
00:26:14Well, considering that
00:26:15Engineering was eight decks down and the only way to get there was to crawl through pitch-black Jefferies tubes... it's fair to say that I was never more frightened in my life.
00:26:31You shouldn't have allowed yourself to be afraid.
00:26:33Is that so?
00:26:35Fear distracts people from accomplishing their goals.
00:26:38Well, that's true, I suppose.
00:26:40On the other hand, fear can sometimes be very healthy.
00:26:45Explain.
00:26:46Well, it keeps you alert.
00:26:48Keeps you from putting yourself in unnecessary danger.
00:26:52I was afraid once.
00:26:53You've been afraid many times.
00:26:55Icheb.
00:26:58Do you want to tell us about it?
00:27:00It was when we were first disconnected from the hive mind, before Seven rescued us.
00:27:05I couldn't hear anyone else's thoughts anymore.
00:27:08I felt alone.
00:27:10I can understand why that was frightening.
00:27:13When you're scared, it helps to have someone to talk to, doesn't it?
00:27:17Yes. Of course, in my case, the only one person I had to talk to was Commander Tuvok.
00:27:21I tried passing the time with a little conversation,
00:27:25but, as you've probably noticed,
00:27:27he's not exactly what you'd call chatty.
00:27:30I'll bet Starfleet has specific, uh, procedures to deal with these kinds of situations.
00:27:35You know, something like, uh, Protocol 1005.
00:27:38In the event your starship is invaded by a hostile electromagnetic life-form...
00:27:43What do you suppose that, uh, that protocol would be, exactly?
00:27:47Rest assured, this crew is doing everything possible to regain control of the ship.
00:27:52You're right. I'm just being silly. I concur.
00:27:54Of course, the crew of the Salvoxia probably thought they were going to regain control of their ship, too.
00:27:59Did I ever tell you about the Salvoxia?
00:28:01If I say yes, will it prevent you from telling the story?
00:28:04It was a Talaxian freighter.
00:28:06Horrible tragedy.
00:28:08Happened nearly a century ago.
00:28:09After suffering a cascade failure, it began to lose life-support generators one by one.
00:28:15Pretty soon, there wasn't enough air left to sustain the entire crew, so they began to draw lots.
00:28:22Can you imagine? Draw the short straw and you suffocate?
00:28:25Anyway, the air continued to diminish, and they kept drawing lots.
00:28:30The crew got smaller and smaller as they waited for someone to rescue them.
00:28:34But no one ever came.
00:28:36The Salvoxia drifted through space for the next 80 years, until somebody finally found her.
00:28:43Makes me short of breath just thinking about it.
00:28:45Perhaps you should occupy your mind with pleasant thoughts, before you hyperventilate.
00:28:50Right.
00:28:51Pleasant thoughts. Pleasant thoughts.
00:28:55What did the bodies look like? I beg your pardon?
00:28:58After 80 years-- were they decomposed?
00:29:00They may have been preserved by the vacuum of space.
00:29:03Oh. I shouldn't have told you that story. It's too gruesome.
00:29:06I wonder what the crew of the Salvoxia did for food after their emergency rations were gone.
00:29:12Maybe they ate each other.
00:29:14All right, uh, that's enough.
00:29:16Now, where was I?
00:29:18We'd made it more than halfway to Engineering,
00:29:20when we ran into an obstacle.
00:29:32Commander!
00:29:35( pants )
00:29:37What do we do now?
00:29:38If I can access environmental controls,
00:29:41I may be able to vent the gas.
00:29:46Is there another way around?
00:29:48It would take several hours to reach Engineering by an alternate route.
00:29:52There is no guarantee we'd find a clear path.
00:29:55Pleasant thoughts.
00:29:58Pleasant thoughts. Ah.
00:30:00While we were in the Jefferies tubes,
00:30:02a good number of the crew had gathered in Engineering.
00:30:0697 crewmen have been accounted for.
00:30:08They're in secure locations throughout the ship.
00:30:10Neelix? No one's seen him.
00:30:12I shouldn't have ordered him to stay in the Mess Hall.
00:30:14You were following procedure.
00:30:16TORRES: Captain.
00:30:19Bad news. The life-form's infiltrated the main computer matrix.
00:30:23As long as it remained in the gel-pack, there was a chance to contain it.
00:30:26But we can't purge it from the main computer without crashing the few systems we have left.
00:30:31Things were looking grim,
00:30:33but the Captain was about to make a breakthrough
00:30:35that would change everything.
00:30:37COMPUTER: Captain Janeway.
00:30:38Captain Janeway.
00:30:40Captain Janeway is in Main Engineering.
00:30:45Sorry, Captain. I know it's irritating. I'll try to shut it down.
00:30:48Hold on a minute. This is Captain Janeway.
00:30:51Respond.
00:30:53Authorization code required.
00:30:55Janeway-pi-alpha.
00:30:57Captain?
00:30:59It's only a hunch... but I think this life-form may be trying to communicate.
00:31:03Sounds like a com system malfunction to me. I'm not so sure.
00:31:06The life-form's been moving from system to system.
00:31:08If it's intelligent it may be learning how to use those systems in some rudimentary way.
00:31:15Are you attempting to communicate?
00:31:17Unable to comply.
00:31:20Even if it understands what you're saying, it may not know how to respond.
00:31:23B'Elanna, can you call up the com system's syntax subroutines?
00:31:26I'll try.
00:31:28We're attempting to make it easier for you to speak to us.
00:31:32Try to access the database at Engineering Station 3-1.
00:31:37Database accessed.
00:31:44Why have you come aboard our ship?
00:31:46Captain Janeway, report to Astrometrics.
00:31:51Why do you want me to go there?
00:31:53Captain Janeway, report to Astrometrics.
00:31:56I guess I'll find out soon enough.
00:31:59Captain, Astrometrics is flooded with nebular gas.
00:32:03Astrometrics life support has been restored.
00:32:06It could be some kind of trap.
00:32:08This life-form, whatever it is, has already injured at least 11 crewmen.
00:32:13I can try to establish a dialogue, or I can let it take over my ship.
00:32:17Seven, you're with me.
00:32:20Yes, Captain.
00:32:21While Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine headed to Astrometrics,
00:32:25Tuvok was trying to ease my fears by guiding me through a meditation.
00:32:30Concentrate on the rhythm of your breathing.
00:32:35Envision your lungs filled with light.
00:32:39Follow it back in time to a moment when you felt no fear... a moment of happiness... serenity.
00:32:52My birthday dinner.
00:32:54Describe it.
00:32:55I was surrounded by all my friends.
00:32:59They'd gotten together to cook me dinner.
00:33:02They prepared all my favorites--
00:33:05steamed chadre kab, terra nut soufflé...
00:33:09I felt loved...
00:33:13appreciated... safe.
00:33:18( screams )
00:33:20Captain Janeway served you nebular gas?
00:33:22No, of course not.
00:33:24It was just my imagination playing tricks on me during the meditation.
00:33:29My head was too full of scary images for me to relax.
00:33:32The Captain, on the other hand, seemed to be getting things under control.
00:33:39( panting )
00:33:41Review of navigational logs in progress.
00:33:46Are you searching for something?
00:33:48Affirmative.
00:33:54The nebula...
00:33:57Manual helm control enabled.
00:34:00You're returning control of the ship.
00:34:03Affirmative.
00:34:05You want me to take you back to the nebula.
00:34:08Affirmative.
00:34:10Well, why didn't you just say so in the first place?
00:34:13Returning to the nebula is too dangerous.
00:34:15We'd risk invasion by other life-forms.
00:34:17I'm beginning to think this was all an accident-- not an invasion.
00:34:21Captain?
00:34:23Think about it.
00:34:25The EM surge didn't hit us until our Bussard collectors destabilized the nebula, and then what happened?
00:34:30The ship began experiencing random malfunctions.
00:34:34I'm not so sure they were random.
00:34:37Navigational sensors were fooling us into heading back toward the nebula, and then, when Tom tried to resume course, he was attacked.
00:34:45This life-form isn't trying to hurt us.
00:34:47It's trying to get home.
00:34:50Can you give us access to the Bridge?
00:34:53Life support on the Bridge has been restored.
00:34:56Level-10 authorization required.
00:34:58Level-10.
00:35:00Captain's eyes only.
00:35:02It wants me to go alone.
00:35:07The Captain and the life-form had begun
00:35:10to establish a rapport,
00:35:11but the relationship was fragile.
00:35:23Is the viewscreen functioning normally?
00:35:26Affirmative.
00:35:32I'm sorry to tell you this... but your nebula is gone.
00:35:37Clarify.
00:35:39The gasses must have continued to dissipate after we left.
00:35:42Warning. Life support failure on all decks.
00:35:45Abandon ship. Abandon...
00:35:48Ship.
00:35:49Abandon ship.
00:35:51The creature was that angry?
00:35:53Its home had been destroyed.
00:35:55The life-form wanted Voyager for itself, and it was going to kill anyone who remained on board.
00:36:10Captain Janeway's only chance of saving her crew was to try to reason with the creature.
00:36:17Listen to me. I can still help you.
00:36:19Abandon ship.
00:36:21There are other class-J nebulas.
00:36:22I'll find you one.
00:36:24Unable to comply.
00:36:25I'd be able to "comply" if you gave me access to Astrometrics.
00:36:29Warning. Oxygen depletion in progress.
00:36:32Give me back helm control!
00:36:34Warning. Helm circuits are overloading.
00:36:38Abandon ship.
00:36:40At least give me access to the com so I can warn my crew!
00:36:43Unable to comply.
00:36:45NEELIX: As the Captain was facing
00:36:47one of her worst fears, losing her ship,
00:36:50I was with Tuvok and about to face one of mine.
00:36:53( grunts )
00:36:55Tuvok!
00:36:56Lie still.
00:36:58I'll try to...
00:36:59( gas hissing )
00:37:02Mr. Neelix... proceed without me.
00:37:05I'm not leaving you here.
00:37:07I am injured.
00:37:09Logic dictates that you take the mask and proceed to Engineering.
00:37:12I don't care what "logic dictates."
00:37:15This isn't the Salvoxia. We're not drawing lots.
00:37:18I am giving you an order. And I'm disobeying it.
00:37:21You're coming with me if I have to drag you by your pointy little ears.
00:37:26I had no choice. I had to control my fear.
00:37:31( gases roar )
00:37:33Pleasant thoughts. Pleasant thoughts.
00:37:42While we made our way to Engineering,
00:37:45Captain Janeway tried to make the creature reconsider what it was doing.
00:37:48You're going to kill everyone on this ship.
00:37:50Do you understand what that means?
00:37:53To deprive of life... extinguish.
00:37:55Yes... and if you extinguish us, you'll be extinguishing yourself.
00:38:01You need this crew.
00:38:03Clarify.
00:38:04The technology you're using needs to be maintained.
00:38:07Who do you think is going to do that when we are gone?
00:38:10Voyager's secondary systems have already begun to fail.
00:38:14In a few weeks, primary systems will start to go off-line.
00:38:18Unable to confirm.
00:38:20Access the internal sensors. Run a shipwide diagnostic.
00:38:24See for yourself.
00:38:26Abandon ship. ( sighs )
00:38:29NEELIX: The Captain's rapport with the creature
00:38:31seemed to be breaking down,
00:38:33and she couldn't afford to wait any longer.
00:38:36I need everyone's attention. We're abandoning ship.
00:38:39Get to the escape pods.
00:38:41We may not be able to eject the pods.
00:38:42We'll push them out if we have to.
00:38:46He needs medical attention!
00:38:48It'll have to wait. We're abandoning ship.
00:38:50The entire crew had to evacuate.
00:38:52The Delta Flyer and the shuttles were launched,
00:38:55followed by all but one of the escape pods.
00:38:58That's everybody but the Captain and the First Officer.
00:39:01After you.
00:39:09I did what you asked-- we're abandoning ship. What more do you want?
00:39:13Diagnostic complete. Secondary systems off-line.
00:39:16Primary systems at 32 percent.
00:39:19Estimated time to failure-- six days, 13 hours.
00:39:24That sounds about right.
00:39:25Captain Janeway, report to Engineering.
00:39:28Like hell, I will.
00:39:33I won't be your prisoner.
00:39:36You'll have to kill me.
00:39:39Acknowledged.
00:39:40( gas hissing )
00:39:42Captain Janeway, report to Engineering.
00:39:44Not until you restore life support... and give me back control of my ship.
00:39:52Unable to comply.
00:39:56Then we'll die here together.
00:40:01I'm guessing...
00:40:02( coughing )
00:40:04I've got about two more minutes... and then you're on your own.
00:40:08Captain Janeway, report to Engineering.
00:40:11I told you... ( coughing )
00:40:13...the only way I'm helping is if you return control of my... ship!
00:40:21( coughing )
00:40:23It looked like the creature was calling the Captain's bluff.
00:40:26She was down to her final breath.
00:40:28But at the last moment...
00:40:34( coughing )
00:40:38( wheezing )
00:40:40Access to all systems has been restored.
00:40:44It took almost two days for the crew to return to the ship.
00:40:49Eventually, an artificial environment was created in an isolated section of Deck 12.
00:40:54The creature's been living there ever since.
00:40:58I told you there was a monster on Deck 12.
00:41:00Haven't you been listening? It's not a monster.
00:41:03It's an alien life-form.
00:41:05( rattling )
00:41:07What was that?
00:41:09Maybe it's an alien life-form coming to get us.
00:41:12Haven't you learned anything about letting your imagination get the best of you?
00:41:17There. That little jolt was probably nothing more than our friend leaving the ship to go to a new home that the Captain found for him.
00:41:24Time to regenerate.
00:41:31What if the life-form didn't leave?
00:41:33What if it wants revenge?
00:41:35Well... w-what if I told you I made up the whole thing?
00:41:40Naomi told me you always exaggerate.
00:41:43I knew the story wasn't true the moment you said the Bussard collectors produced nadion emissions.
00:41:49I should've known better than to try fooling the four of you.
00:41:54All right, in you go.
00:42:05Pleasant dreams.
00:42:14How are the children?
00:42:15Tucked in their alcoves, safe and sound.
00:42:18I hope they weren't frightened.
00:42:19Oh... why would they be frightened, Captain?
00:42:22They were in the dark for three hours.
00:42:24Oh, no, not to worry.
00:42:26I told them a story to pass the time.
00:42:29Let me guess-- "Mother Goose."
00:42:31Certainly not.
00:42:32Some of those fairy tales can be frightening-- ogres and child-eating monsters.
00:42:37Speaking of which, is everything... okay?
00:42:40We're just taking some final readings before we resume course. Show him, Harry.
00:42:52Well...
00:42:54I hope it lives happily ever after.
